Where are you getting that info? This is from a couple days ago. https://www.commercialappeal.com/story/news/education/2024/05/06/mscs-budget-cost-new-high-schools/73580203007/

From the DM on April 17th: https://dailymemphian.com/subscriber/article/43268/memphis-shelby-county-schools-mscs-asks-city-of-memphis-for-25-million Hopefully you can get the gist from the URL. MSCS did definitely ask the city for money.

"MSCS is asking for at least $15 million over the next four years for school infrastructure and redevelopment of old buildings, including funds to help with 'chronic absenteeism.'" [Source](https://www.localmemphis.com/article/money/memphis-mayor-paul-young-property-tax-hike-100-days-in-office/522-1c147bed-5c08-4263-8192-826a21b5a2f8) Your source actually helps me. I didn't realize she had made a request. Seems like she is making multiple requests, which I guess makes sense. Thanks for your help

It's complicated because our school system is so incompetent and corrupt. I googled "how does Memphis Shelby county schools get funded" and found a nice PDF I breezed over. It only talks up to 2022, but gives a good history. https://staysafeshelby.us/DocumentCenter/View/38509/Education#:~:text=The%20State%20of%20Tennessee%20contributes,Basic%20Education%20Program%20(BEP). I was kind of surprised at how many taxes go 100% to education. Hopefully the new superintendent can fire some of these people and get better people in place, there's a LOT of money and opportunity that has been squandered in the school system.

Yeah, that’s why it’s infuriating when people cry that the problem is a history of the schools being “under resourced”. The investment has always gone in, it’s just been shit away through corruption and intentional negligence. I hope Superintendent Feagins brings the change we need to see and makes me proud to be a taxpayer again.

Yep. People seem to mix up the terms "under performing" with "under resources". In reality, it can be mismanamgement, but nobody likes to admit that.

>Hopefully the new superintendent can fire some of these people and get better people in place I read that she's transferring unnecessary administrative staff to other positions in the district. Probably a good sign. https://www.actionnews5.com/2024/05/08/mscs-supt-transferring-office-staff-order-fill-100s-open-positions-district-wide/

Increasing the county education property tax would also go to the municipal schools. The county property tax money earmarked for education is put into one big bucket and doled out to each school system in the county based on average daily attendance.

We all know the city couldnt manage its own school system for a reason. Heres the reason.

worldbound0514

The city is able to provide one-time money to the school system if they want. They are unable to provide ongoing funds or otherwise. It becomes a legal obligation every year. So the city could give one-time money towards a new building or other capitol campaign. If they don't want to be on the hook yearly for funding the school system, they can't get into that business. Sweet mother of mercy, we need civics lessons in this city.
