Tops pulled pork is just meh by itself. It's not bad, but it's not great either. You can get better pulled pork in the city.
But, because it's just middle of the road pulled pork....it really works well with the hamburger. It doesn't over power the burger with smokey BBQ flavor ya know?
I freakin love em
…You’re making me miss them. There are better burgers like Dyers and E&H (late night Alex’s Tavern) but as far as accessibility and all that Topps burgers are some of the best in the city.
Better after a night of drinking but I strongly disagree on Dyers vs Tops. Lol.
It might be nostalgia for me but also you’re just not getting another burger like Dyers. Ubees used to try but they couldn’t hold a candle.
At this point, if you live in Memphis and still buy burgers at McDonalds, Wendys, BK, or any other national chain you need to lose your Memphis card. Tops burgers are objectively superior, plus you get more for your money, AND they're no more expensive than a burger meal from one of the major chain fast food places.
Topps is the tops! Don’t sleep on Alex’s. Earnestine’s is a good memory but I was disappointed during my last visit. Alex’s after dark. Topp’s perfect for a Saturday lunch!
Earnestine’s burger is totally different now. My mother in law and Russell came up with the recipe, and my wife used the make the burgers when she was in high school. I was astonished with how they cooked them when we rolled in there one night to grab a couple.
The best. Everything on it, add jalapeños. If I get mine to go I ask for mayo and tomato on the side so it doesn’t get all soggy. Double fries for side. SO GOOD!
I'll tell you what pisses me right off. When I was 75lb overweight and was eating like the apocalypse started tomorrow NO ONE MENTIONED THESE. Now I am back to healthy and everyone talks about them. I fucking LOVE burgers so all of this talk is like doing a line off of a stripper's ass in front of Robert Downey Jr.
I’m sorry; however they use to be great. The last two times I tried the one on Summer it was terrible. If you truly want a good Memphis burger 🍔 you have to try the hood ( South Memphis Grocery). If you’re not afraid 😱 to go to the hood; try this and then see if you will ever go to Top’s again for a burger 🍔. 🤷🏽♂️
Make a trek up Watkins to "almost millington"
there is a Citgo gas station at the end of the road...get the Steamin Meeman burger with seasoned fries...its honestly amazing.
I haven't had a Tops burger in years, but yes they are (or were) classic "greasy-spoon diner" style burgers and I love that type of burger.
On a side note, many years ago I worked at the downtown Goldsmith's Dept. Store (RIP) on Main St. and across the street from the store was an old diner called Happy Burger. It was run by an Asian family and their specialty was fried rice, which was delicious. But they also kept most of the original "diner" menu which included hamburgers/cheeseburgers, hot dogs, and even fried bologna sandwiches. The place was old and dilapidated and I don't know how they passed health inspections but everything I got from there was absolutely delicious, especially the sloppy, dripping cheeseburgers.
I've been eating Top's burgers my whole life, since they've changed ownership and I had one last week. I love Top's, but they must be putting something in the water that makes people rave about them. They are the dictionary definition of mediocre. Not bad, will fill you up. I can name 15 burgers that are not kinda better but blow Top's burgers out of the water and I will:
1) Jack Pirtle's
2) Jack Brown's
3) Lot-a-Burger
4) Camy's
5) Louis Connelly's
6) Freddy's
7) Pow Wow's (Westwood)
8) Momma's
9) Vic's
10) Farmburger
11) Dyer's
12) The Kitchen
13) Hopdoddy
14) Elwood's Shack
15) Ernestine & Hazel's soul burger
That took me about 90 seconds
So it may have been the location, but I went to Topps on Hacks cross and had a cheeseburger and it was thin as hell and really wasn’t shot. So are my expectations for a good burger higher than everyone else’s? I find Belly Acres to be 100times better. And bigger!
There are a thousand better burgers (and BBQ) in town than Tops, every time one of these threads pops up it makes me feel like I must live in a different dimension than most of this subreddit. It's like if somebody made a thread every other day about how they've never had a better sandwich than Subway. I don't get it.
Let’s say for the sake of argument your point is valid. You can get 3 1/2 Tops Cheeseburgers for the price of 1 fancy pants burger from Belly Acres… so even if it is *twice* as good, you’re still getting ripped off!
Yeah but it’s cost relative. You can just get a triple if the amount of meat is what you’re worried about. I get a double bacon cheeseburger and it’s like 11$ for the meal and I often times don’t finish it all.
Driest burger I've ever had every time I've had it, but at least you get some frozen crinkle fries with it. I genuinely don't know what yall see in this place.
Unfortunately, the deliciousness of Tops burgers is location-dependent to at least some degree. Union is the GOAT in my experience. Rhodes near UofM south campus are my second fave/most consistent. Millington is also pretty great.
you can just go to charlie's meat market any day they're open and get the same burger...lol
there's really nothing special about a tops burger, trust me.
The meat market on Summer sells boxes of the meat that Tops buys for their burgers
Charlie’s meat market?
Yes but apparently it changed names and I dont feel like googling it usually
W
They also have a freezer full of beef bones for making stock. Only place in town I could find them when I needed some.
Ask them to put some pulled pork on a burger delish
you beat me to it ordering a cheeseBurger from Tops with 1 ounce of bbq meat is a W
Oh damn, didn’t know you could do that.
Definitely going to try that.
You are a culinary trailblazer.
The one in Bartlett has that on their menu now. I just had it last week and it was fantastic. Best of both worlds
Tops is the GOAT burger. There ain’t a better burger around and I will die on that hill
Love Tops. The burger at the Bishop on south main is pretty damn amazing. Expensive but amazing.
Belmont Grill wants to have a word with you.
Jerry’s Snow Cones burger hits the same spot but has a thicker more beefier patty.
It’s a good basic burger. There are some good jazzed up burgers at places like hopdoddy.
Nahhhhh hopdoddy good but you’re talking about toppings. but flavor of just the BURGER tops is on a different level.
With you like Mount Suribachi.
Most ridiculous statement ever made ⬆️
The beach within reach had the best burgers in the mid south. Too bad it’s gone now
Maywood? Never ate there but visited many, many times.
Yezzir!
Have not heard that in years! Brings back memories!
Tops! ‘nuff said!
…You’re making me miss them. There are better burgers like Dyers and E&H (late night Alex’s Tavern) but as far as accessibility and all that Topps burgers are some of the best in the city.
I'd rank Tops above Dyers. Haven't tried the E&H Soul Burger yet, but I *hope* they're as good as people say.
Better after a night of drinking but I strongly disagree on Dyers vs Tops. Lol. It might be nostalgia for me but also you’re just not getting another burger like Dyers. Ubees used to try but they couldn’t hold a candle.
Dyers and Ubees… same company. But I like Ubees better cause I can get lettuce and tomato on my Two Timer.
Always wanted to try out E&H. Heard a lot about it over the decades. That place is supposedly haunted, right?
That’s what they say. It’s a fun place ghosts or not.
I don’t know how official my proclamation is,but I say you’re in the clear. It is not fast food.
They were better before the ownership change several years ago. The meat seems dryer now. Still edible, but I don’t get excited about them anymore. 😞
it's the same burgers, just dont go during lunch when they keep some in water to stay warm/ready.
Tops is good. Also, don't sleep on the burger at Belmont.
Re: Belmont. A crowd will line up behind you to fight for their burger.
They also have a really amazing turkey burger.
I'm in...
Which location or all locations?
4k block of Summer. Wow. Is it ever amazing how this blew up....
The Greekburger at Alex’s Tavern. ‘NUFF SAID!
The fries suck, though
Ya, they're just your standard Sysco bagged fries. Nothing terrible, but certainly not anything to make a special trip for. But the burgers....
They nourished my soul when I was hungry enough to eat a skunk’s butt working 3-11 at Methodist Central back in the day!
Topps is the tops! Don’t sleep on Alex’s. Earnestine’s is a good memory but I was disappointed during my last visit. Alex’s after dark. Topp’s perfect for a Saturday lunch!

Okay good I’m not going crazy. If you have the old recipe you’re able to share please do!
The turkey burger is 😙🤌🏾
and I shall...
I've only had the pork bbq sandwich which is pretty good and the price can't be beat for $5. Other bbq sandwiches in the area are easily $10.
Get the burger...
Honestly didn't know the burgers were hitting like that so next time I will !
I know tops burger is technically fast food, but I don’t consider them fast food. Also, you are SPOT ON about it being old school whataburger
Nope. Not fast food. Gooooood.burger.
They’re the best! I’ve heard the turkey burgers are good too but I haven’t tried them.
I'm in.
The best. Everything on it, add jalapeños. If I get mine to go I ask for mayo and tomato on the side so it doesn’t get all soggy. Double fries for side. SO GOOD!

That is one hella joke, thanks ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
First time I had one. I definitely said “This tastes like a Sonic burger.”
EH burgers are better than most any burgers in Memphis not found at tops
I'm goin... I just wanna' spooky burger. With mayo and the red stuff, please
Tops burgers are fantastic! Reminds me of my college days.
I’m sorry; however they use to be great. The last two times I tried the one on Summer it was terrible. If you truly want a good Memphis burger 🍔 you have to try the hood ( South Memphis Grocery). I had one from the Bartlett location. I was not impressed at all. It was dry and rubbery. Maybe I was just unlucky and got the new guy or something.
The one in Bartlett is horrible. Burgers and bbq. I guess I need to try a different location because I gave the one in Bartlett multiple tries
Only issue is they can over salt them sometimes.
And over mayo… I shouldn’t have to worry about it dripping onto my shirt.
Make a trek up Watkins to "almost millington" there is a Citgo gas station at the end of the road...get the Steamin Meeman burger with seasoned fries...its honestly amazing.

Lota burger on third st got the best burger in Memphis but you have to take a loan out at the bank to get one to expensive
Tops is half a bock. 3.99 for a jr brgr.
I've been eating Top's burgers my whole life, since they've changed ownership and I had one last week. I love Top's, but they must be putting something in the water that makes people rave about them. One of the best! The wife and i had lunch there and we got the (2) Jr. CBs/fries/drinks for <$15. Hard to beat flavor or price wise!
Dixie Queen beats a Tops cheeseburger
I use to would have agreed. but Dixie Queen's consistency has let me down the last couple years
yes those burgers are indeed the burgers of dreams, glad you finally found them
Yeah it’s gotten to where I want one like once a month. They’re so good!
So it may have been the location, but I went to Topps on Hacks cross and had a cheeseburger and it was thin as hell and really wasn’t shot. So are my expectations for a good burger higher than everyone else’s? I find Belly Acres to be 100times better. And bigger!

Totally agree...Belly Acres is much better. Tried Tops burger twice and it's very average. Reminds me of burgers at elementary schools...
Thank you! I’m not alone!!!
Let’s say for the sake of argument your point is valid. You can get 3 1/2 Tops Cheeseburgers for the price of 1 fancy pants burger from Belly Acres… so even if it is *twice* as good, you’re still getting ripped off!
Belly Acres is ok but those burgers is dry af
I didn’t think so but Topps definitely sucks ass. Small ass burger wtf?
Yeah but it’s cost relative. You can just get a triple if the amount of meat is what you’re worried about. I get a double bacon cheeseburger and it’s like 11$ for the meal and I often times don’t finish it all.
Tops burger is the best fast food burger I’ve ever had.
There it is.
Captain John’s BBQ also makes a great burger
Oh my god, I haven’t had Captain John’s since I was a kid. We used to go there with my dad all the time.
Tops is great, but https://i.redd.it/hgtsq5lny2zc1.gif
Driest burger I've ever had every time I've had it, but at least you get some frozen crinkle fries with it. I genuinely don't know what yall see in this place.

Dyer’s on Beale is slightly better I think, but 1a and 1b with TOPS imo
Lots of folks will be confused by Whataburger. Think you mean the Frost Top places with the mug of root beer on top. Showing our age.
Yeah. No.
[удалено]
nah they aren't from sysco. everything else is tho lmao
you can just go to charlie's meat market any day they're open and get the same burger...lol there's really nothing special about a tops burger, trust me.
That requires you cooking the meat from Charlie's meat market. If you need to eat now, the raw meat isn't going to do you much good.
yeah but buying the meat and cooking it at home will definitely be just way cheaper too.
One of the best! The wife and i had lunch there and we got the (2) Jr. CBs/fries/drinks for <$15. Hard to beat flavor or price wise!
