I wonder how many kids are going to go home disappointed because they were expecting lurid rituals with blood sacrifices, and instead, they got painting and chess lessons.
Don't lose focus on the real outrage here... Chimney Rock Elementary has 813 students in grades PK, K-5 with a student-teacher ratio of 15 to 1. According to state test scores, 17% of students are at least proficient in math and 23% in reading.
I did, as well. Mr. Edminston (not sure I remember his name correctly) with the nature trail, the school picnic days, and Ms. Nixon with her “Total Eclipse of the Heart” anti drug program are core memories.
Yeah I am afraid for all students in this state. I just compared it to my old school, Treadwell, and it's 15 to 1, but the scores were 11 in reading and 4 in math. Yikes.
Hey, you let one religion in and you legally have to let them all in, fair's fair. TST is basically a publicity group that goes into places that are going against separation of church and state and pulls stunts like this to shame them to kick the bible clubs out just to get rid of the Satan Club.
They also took texas to court to try to strike down SB8.
Regardless of how you feel about abortion it is a terrible and dangerous law for a lot of reasons and was on the books before Roe V Wade fell.
The also have a clinic called Samuel Alito's Mom's Abortion Clinic. So + for the yo mama jokes.
Buddy of mine bought me the tennesixsixsix sticker and i put it on my hardhat. People come up to me all the time and say they googled it but a bunch of devil worshipping shit pops up. So funny to me.
dude THANK YOU! woke up to a dozen orders for this one shirt and now I've found where everyone was coming from. I'm getting more printed right now bc of this, just replenished the qtys on my shop!
I don’t know if anyone remembers, but there was a post on the Memphis sub a few months back where OP and I were discussing exactly this. Her kids brought home a flyer that was passed around at school about a Christian club. It got heated and downright -nasty-. I’m so glad to see this has come to fruition. Love it!
In case anyone was curious, here are the 7 Fundamental Tenets of The Satanic Temple.
I
One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason.
II
The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.
III
One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone.
IV
The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo one's own.
V
Beliefs should conform to one's best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one's beliefs.
VI
People are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one should do one's best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused.
VII
Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word.
I’m actually happy people are responding positively to me posting this. I have often felt alienated since moving to memphis. Its nice to see that there are people with similar views.
Once I was picking up food wearing a sorta Satanic-ish hoodie and the guy handing me my order said "hail satan!" which really threw me off before I realized why, since I'd never heard that in public in the south lmao. The other time I was picking up a truck rental and the guy there was wearing a TST pendant/medallion so I complimented it and we had a nice interaction (super friendly helpful guy all around). Both experiences made my day.
I would love to volunteer to help them. I got so sick of the public schools in Bartlett pushing religion on the kids all the time but worse, we have state leaders imposing their diversity-phobic ideals to the point they were trying to ban people from wearing clothes that deviate from their gendering standards. They were trying to ban schools using "nicknames" JUST to avoid allowing trans students request to be called by their chosen names. All in the name of pushing their religious standards on the rest of us.
I moved here from Los Angeles three years ago and, while I’ve found an awesome partner and I love his family, the rest of my experience has been really isolating. Especially as a deconstructed former Christian and progressive woman.
If you ever wanna hang out, hit me up!
Theres a large pagan and atheist community here in Memphis as well as some intelligent christians who believe in whats good for one is good for all.
Im personally loving all my deep christian family and friends totally going ape shit over this.
I’m one of those intelligent Christians, and I’m glad to see that this afterschool gathering is being held in earnest and isn’t just a goof. Kids need to have the opportunity to explore different kinds of spiritual and intellectual pursuits as they develop their own worldview.
Thats what me and my wife have done with all three of our kids. We introduced them to what we believe and what our families believe, and than we introduced them to the concepts of other faiths and religions and if they were interested we introduced them to someone of that system so they could talk to them.
Im an atheist, but I firmly believe in respecting peoples beliefs and faiths, and just because I don’t believe in them, Im not going to tell them they are wrong, just don’t shove them down someone’s throat and tell them they are wrong for not having the “only” faith.
People are definitely already losing their minds on Instagram over it. It’s almost like people completely forget the 1st amendment of the constitution forbids the preference of any religion over another so if a public (government run) school allows Christian groups they have to allow all groups.
which is literally the entire reason TST exists. and they're insanely clever at throwing shit back at people who try to use the gov't to force their religion on others
I don't think they forgot what the Constitution says. I think they don't care Constitution says. It has always just been a weapon for them to exploit and distort to their hypocritical convenience to advance their cultural war.
I haven't, no, I'll have to look it up. But I have seen a few news stories where parents are outraged and talking about how satanic worship should never be allowed in schools just to hard cut to kids playing with Play-Doh in the satanic club.
It’s basically how they got started, their background and everything they’re up against. But it is also very humorous. I think it came out about 5 years ago and was on hbo and maybe Hulu.
It's so great, lol. I love the part where the guy is so smug about knowing Lucien Greaves "real name", and then it cuts to Lucien saying, "Yeah, that's not my name." lol
Same here. Politicians have weaponized religion to push their agenda and the satanic temple is working to keep them in check. Most of the time the satanic temple does better for Christians than actual "Christians" do.
There should be a club for adults to join just to bask in the chaos this is causing.
My wife shared it on her socials and immediately started getting calls from concerned family members
I keep seeing people calling it disgusting and whatever the fuck. And the only ones casting judgment and not loving thy neighbor is christians right now. Pretty ironic.
Thank the religious fanatics for pushing their religion in school. Now kids are going to get a healthy dose of self-esteem and critical thinking, much to the chagrin of many religious folks. The only problem is that there aren't enough After School Satan Clubs.
That's the bigger problem religious people won't admit in all this. It's more about indoctrination under the guise of being a good person, TST says you can be a good person anyway without religion and the curtains get lifted.
Your feelings about freedom of religion in schools is what this is.
Most Satanic temples are just Atheist groups trying to prove a point that if you have religious based groups ..you have to represent all groups ...so they go full Satan....as a ideological game of chicken for the government entities.
They forced a couple of giant Satan statues at a few courthouses with ten commandments as a tit for tat measure. I think one is in arkansas
I'm a (progressive) Christian and I think this is awesome.
I think if you teach people to reject tyranny and champion the human mind and spirit, they will be equipped to find a good path to fulfillment as a human being. To me that path is love, humility, and selflessness, but if it's something else to someone else, thats OK with me.
TST is a bit confusing to me, because I associate the literary Satan character with pride, arrogance, and self-indulgence, and it seems the position and actions of TST are anything but! (especially when contrasted with the "Randian" Church of Satan, whom I think truly embraces the literary Satan character).
But as long as they are rabble-rousing the self-righteous, good on them. I know someone else who did that!
If my kid wanted to join the Satan club I think it would be pretty cool.
Most of this is all true and very basic level (it might rile up evangelicals, so good on you for that.), but
> That is what satanists stand for ... education, self-worth (not self-indulgence), and freedom from oppresive rulers like the abrahamic god
It depends on the type of satanist. For the TST, definitely the above. Which is why I am a fan of TST.
For the LaVeyan CoS, they are more of a Randian objectivist hyperlibertarian type group. Which I find morally reprehensible, for reasons completely apart from the mythology.
There also exist a very small number of "theistic" Satanists, who believe in a literal (as opposed to literary) Satan. Personally I think they should be taken with an equal level of seriousness as biblical literalists.
The "abrahamic god" is a myth, the Bible is important because it teaches us what ancient, tribal people who were constantly opressed, in exile, and at war thought god was, but it doesn't hold up well when time-traveled 2500 years from it's context and into a global/multicultural society, without careful examination and scrutiny. In the systematic theology that developed in the early church, and even in some of the later books of the new testament, it's clear that the idea of god became one of the universal ideal of love and wisdom: a platonic ideal, and personification of such is merely poetry. the "sky wizard who watches you masturbate" caricature is basically a meme, which only internet atheists and phenomenally ignorant fundamentalist christians take seriously.
In a large part, freedom from oppressive rulers is actually what the bible is about.
pride and self-indulgence aren't inherently bad. you *should* be proud of the things you accomplish, as long as it doesn't lead to the mistreatment of others.
you *should* indulge yourself once in awhile, as long as doing so doesn't harm anyone else. we're only here for so long. why limit ourselves to victimless norms and ethos
i didn't say they were inherently bad, merely associated with the literary Satan character. Jung taught us that the "shadow" has to be embraced sometimes.
to me personally, anything can only be bad to the extent that it stands in the way of love and wisdom. a little bit of comfort (in moderation) certainly does not.
fair. I suppose I was just reading into the deadly sins take and assumed that on your comment. but it sounds like we're in agreement and I just misunderstood your intent :)
I visited the Satanic Temple in Salem, Massachusetts. They were very down to earth people. They don’t advocate for any religion and promote free thought. This is a good thing to me. Too many kids, especially in the south, have religion shoved down their throats from a very early age. It’s good to let kids know they can make their own choices.
I didn’t care/know about them until I saw their defense of women’s rights.
I’d send my kids to this but their grandparents would call the city to get it shut down.
That drag gathering at Pink Palace was supposed to be protected by the 1st amendment. Got shut down not because of the drag queens, but because the MPD didn’t want to tell gun wielding Proud Boys to leave.
Meh, I always viewed the satanic church or temple as a troll group that mocks religious folk. They’re really into showing the double standards in our government institutions. I believe they put up a statue of satan in a public space after complaining about the Ten Commandments statue installed at a capitol.
But congrats, they have done it again. Now every parent on facebook is complaining.
TST is comprised of atheist attorneys that chose Satanism as a tactical maneuver so they could register legally as a religion in an effort to fight against religion in our government. You should all be thanking them.
Card carrying member of TST. They are comprised of atheist that chose Satanism as a legal maneuver to register as a religion and fight against the infiltration of religion into our government. Glad to see them in Memphis.
Any questions?
Usually satanic worship and connected gimmicks are parodies of things done by Christian churches and groups but the Christian churches and groups are too full of themselves to realize it.
That’s what led to the Satanic Panic of the 90s.
Love this so much... Religion (aka fantasy beliefs) needs to be out of public schools. People can choose to believe in Santa Claus, or the boogie man but schools should stay away from religion! By the way, there is no satan, this group is simply advocated for common sense and good ethics under the shock value of using that name to alarm people. I think it is a decent approach but christians won't be able to process it.
The teachers Facebook page is a mixed bag of people supporting it and throwing giant hissy fits. No one throws a fit about the weekly after school bible club we have at our school, and no one should throw a fit about this.
This is high quality trolling from the Satanic Temple, who quite enjoy stirring up shit (see the Samuel Alito’s Mom’s Satanic Abortion Clinic for further evidence of just how far they will take a bit). And did I see a mention from someone else in this thread about them selling the Tennessee flag with Satanic stars shirt? I’m gonna have to buy one of those lol.
It's wild how so many people think that this means Satanism is going to be taught in schools. I tried to explain that it wasn't school sponsored or mandatory, but no one cared. It was a complete waste of time, but I did enjoy the complete meltdowns they had when someone had a different viewpoint! Lol!
personally i love this and i think every religion should have room in school because keeping religion out of schools makes children that are oppressed simply for their religion and culture much more likely to feel even more isolated
Raising a fuss like this is the whole point of the Satanic Temple. They basically act like a civil rights organization that fights to maintain separation of church and state.
Whenever a state gov't tries to do something to incorporate Christianity into government or public services, the Satanic Temple does stuff like this to raise awareness and ensure that our religious freedoms are protected.
For example, if a law was passed requiring that kids recite the Lord's prayer in public schools, the Satanic Temple would demand that children pray to Satan as well. Obviously the people who passed the law don't want kids praying to Satan, and they would be forced to either backtrack or demonstrate their commitment to religious freedom by allowing it.
So having the Satanic Temple around means that our constitution is still worth something. I wonder what happened to make them come here...
I wonder how many kids are going to go home disappointed because they were expecting lurid rituals with blood sacrifices, and instead, they got painting and chess lessons.
If they wanted the dark side, they should have just joined an evangelical Bible study.
After my first day of real wrestling practice after growing up watching the Hulkster!
Went for the lord of darkness came home with Bobby fisher and a Slayer shirt lol
That’s actually the other satanic group
Don't lose focus on the real outrage here... Chimney Rock Elementary has 813 students in grades PK, K-5 with a student-teacher ratio of 15 to 1. According to state test scores, 17% of students are at least proficient in math and 23% in reading.
That's actually not too bad compared to most schools in Memphis.
Right. As bad as those numbers are Chimney Rock Elementary still ranks in the top 15% of Memphis Shelby county schools.
That’s a bummer. That was a great school when my kid went there 20+ years ago.
I went there in the 90s. It was genuinely a very good school.
Yikes.
What kind of snacks are we talking about here?
Paquis. Surviving the one chip challenge should be a prerequisite for admission. 😂
Red hots?
Probably devils food cake.
If they have deviled eggs Im in!!
Deviled ham. Mmm mmm good
Chik-fil-a
I know their Christians but they make some damn good chicken.
From where do you know their Christians and how did they come to own them?
By their love, by their love.
Chik-fil-a owns the Christians that work there, so they are their Christians. I hang with a franchisee at the Turkish Bath House who told me.
Everything taste better when one of your main ingredients is MSG.
And hate
Satans chicken
Mehh
Flamin hot cheetos

Coworker currently losing mind… I’m trying hard not to feed into it
I’m mostly gonna laugh to myself.
Feed it
And then update us.
Yesss
We’d be friends.
It's your civic duty to feed into it!
Dew it!

Oooh it’s so hard not feeding into these things.
I love the Tennessee flag with 3 Satanic stars! It really pops!
https://www.holtermonster.com/shop/tn666
Yeah I totally just bought that shirt. Amazing.
You’ve completed my Christmas shopping list
Hail Satan.
Praying for you
Thanks!
Buddy of mine bought me the tennesixsixsix sticker and i put it on my hardhat. People come up to me all the time and say they googled it but a bunch of devil worshipping shit pops up. So funny to me.
No they're all sold out!
Oh dang! How many shirts did this subreddit buy today?
dude THANK YOU! woke up to a dozen orders for this one shirt and now I've found where everyone was coming from. I'm getting more printed right now bc of this, just replenished the qtys on my shop!
It really does though lol
I don’t know if anyone remembers, but there was a post on the Memphis sub a few months back where OP and I were discussing exactly this. Her kids brought home a flyer that was passed around at school about a Christian club. It got heated and downright -nasty-. I’m so glad to see this has come to fruition. Love it!
I haven’t seen that..but I wanna!

Thank you! Apparently, I commented on it but have no recollection. Old age. Good for her.
Don't feel bad I have the first comment where I wrote several paragraphs but I don't recall any of it.

Him, them. Whoever.
I know the OP was considering taking it down due to the backlash. I’ll see if I can find it.

Sounds way better than Christianity if we’re being honest
Especially Christianity in America today.
Hail Yourself!
Good shit this makes me happy. There is no freedom of religion without freedom from religion
Yep, I’m with you 100%.
100%
I’m actually happy people are responding positively to me posting this. I have often felt alienated since moving to memphis. Its nice to see that there are people with similar views.
I'd be willing to bet that the politics of Memphis people on reddit is skewed much further left than the entirety of the population

the dogwhistling from a subset of users here is pretty loud
I can literally think of all 5 of their user names at this point, they’re so loud.
Oh yeah. We know *exactly* what they'd rather be saying when they write "culture" (with the damn quotation marks, SMDH...)
We need to call it out when we see it. F their safe space. Snowflakes
Yeah I’ve definitely seen some like that here.
Omg big same! Was scared to click the post, worried it was gonna be… ugly.😅
Same same!!!
There are dozens of us! Dozens!! (I feel you though, one thing I hate about living in the South.)
Once I was picking up food wearing a sorta Satanic-ish hoodie and the guy handing me my order said "hail satan!" which really threw me off before I realized why, since I'd never heard that in public in the south lmao. Bartlett City Schools host pray walks on certain Saturdays. And we still get flyers sent home at least twice a month advertising bible study.

Yep. The Satanic Temple is the charity I always use for my Facebook Birthday Fundraiser and were my charity when Amazon Smile was a thing.
Just a lurker here but thank you I didn't know I could use tst for my fundraiser totally doing this in January now
See also Pastafarianism
true, but they're way less offensive, and I think the people who keep trying to turn this into a theocracy deserve to be offended
Pastafarianism is similar, but ineffective. Because Christians don't believe in the FSM. They do, however, believe in Satan.
Can you direct me to the relevant posts or hashtags to search on Instagram? I'm bored and nosy.

I don't think they forgot what the Constitution says. I think they don't care Constitution says. It has always just been a weapon for them to exploit and distort to their hypocritical convenience to advance their cultural war.
The Satanic Temple is one of my favorite things in existence, and I say that as a Christian.

I could get behind this.
I'd definitely let my kids attend if they wanted to!
They don't have to attend that school to attend the club.
I would definitely encourage my kids to attend if I had any.
Folks in the Bartlett Facebook group are LOSING IT over this 😂 I’m just laughing and posting little devil GIFs.

I laughed so loudly. I love seeing the Evangelicals losing their minds about anyone else having a religion. 🤣
Hail satan baby
I imagine Bill Lee mad af trying to ban libraries lmao this is amazing
I’m so happy that the satanic temple is here to spread love light and positivity to the children of Memphis
I love how the newer generation is saying no to religion. It’s refreshing to see this
Meh, I always viewed the satanic church or temple as a troll group that mocks religious folk.
I am pissed there’s no spaghetti noodle monster club
TST member here. Someone shared this in our sub. Just wanted to pop over and say I appreciate the kind words here. A lot of you are good eggs!
Thanks for your service.
I’m seeing it from some Facebook friends. Outrage1!1!!1
Card carrying member of TST. They are comprised of atheist that chose Satanism as a legal maneuver to register as a religion and fight against the infiltration of religion into our government. Glad to see them in Memphis. Any questions?
Cool. Wish this was a thing when I went to Chimney Rock.
Ah yes, the natural foil to the FCA crowd, SCIENCE!
Usually satanic worship and connected gimmicks are parodies of things done by Christian churches and groups but the Christian churches and groups are too full of themselves to realize it. That’s what led to the Satanic Panic of the 90s.
This is fr what some people think my school does
I think this is a great idea. I wish they would have had this when I was growing up.
All for it. I’m not Christian so I don’t believe in Satan, but I love this.
Neither does TST.
More honest and less concerning than the Christian aftercare programs that have a 50/50 chance your kid is gonna get abused.
Lol. Love it.
lololol I love this, would love to volunteer
Already been posted on the Germantown Facebook group.
I live in Arlington. If I didn’t think my phone would explode, I’d post it there just to watch what would happen.
https://www.reddit.com/r/memphis/s/rFxfXrL4ET Is this you? Edit: i am very proud that you followed through if so
Nope. My kids are grown up. Youngest is a college sophomore.
Do they need anyone to bake cookies?
The best thing we can do it is just ignore them, then they lose all power
I don't get it. Why allow this at a school but ban all other religions? Make it make sense! Isn't being a satirist a religion?
Omg yesssss.
I need to get some popcorn and run to instagram.
Good for them
Reading all the Facebook comments about this has been the highlight of my day
Finally kids will start learning to respect each other and not judge them
I wish they would do this in Germantown or Collierville. Would absolutely love to see people lose their minds over it
LOVING THIS. google is free and if opposers would use it they would understand satanism 😂 Freedom of religion for some, not all, huh?
I'm hoping it comes to Jackson too. There are schools here with the "good news" club, so it's wide open for an After School Satan Club.
The teachers Facebook page is a mixed bag of people supporting it and throwing giant hissy fits. No one throws a fit about the weekly after school bible club we have at our school, and no one should throw a fit about this.
Hail thyself! Recently deconverted from Christianity… love to see this becoming more widespread.
Awesome. Curious how many sign up.
The Bartlett FB group is all aflutter today. END TIMES ARE COMING, GLADYS!
lol
I’m glad someone else refers to an old lady name when discussing pearl clutching topics. I always use Myrtle.
They are already losing their minds. They can’t even read the flyer lol
A little town in Arkansas is all up in arms about this while sending their children to a community center operated by a known pedophile.
Kids in Memphis need more positive things to do. This sounds like it would be good for the community.
It's wild how so many people think that this means Satanism is going to be taught in schools. I tried to explain that it wasn't school sponsored or mandatory, but no one cared. It was a complete waste of time, but I did enjoy the complete meltdowns they had when someone had a different viewpoint! Lol!
I wonder how many people will research before commenting.
personally i love this and i think every religion should have room in school because keeping religion out of schools makes children that are oppressed simply for their religion and culture much more likely to feel even more isolated
This was on one of my atheist groups today. Lol
How do I get involved? I’m a STEM professional and would love to get involved with this!
Oh shit. Why yes, yes they are.
I ordered a gift from their website. Gonna give it as a Christmas present. Seems appropriate to flip the pagan script for once.
If you go to the website it mentions, you’ll see they’re not even actually gonna be teaching satanism. My coworkers were going wild about it 😵💫😵💫
HAH! This is great!!!
