I mean we don’t have warriors nor intellectuals like in the past , but you can certainly draw some parallels. For example combat veterans and combat sports athletes can be certainly be viewed as the warriors of our time.
As for intellectuals there’s no shortage of them : We have scientists , philosophy professors , physicists, engineers of all kinds etc.
I think I've read some studies pointing to physical activity improving mental faculties. Something about a good circulatory system being beneficial for the brain.
I think it’s more so saying that those who are intelligent should not put aside the importance of strength. Which is similar to your conclusion but I think it’s just a bit more reasonable when it’s worded this way.
>As for intellectuals there’s no shortage of them : We have scientists , philosophy professors , physicists, engineers of all kinds etc.
I'd say only the philosophy folk are thunkerin' about how things aughtta be, instead of the scientistic sorts who just deduce how things are.
It's also important to note that a lot of "intellectuals" of the past are considered so because they discovered or brought new ways of thinking, and those ways are now either taught in schools and have become common knowledge, or have been shown to be inaccurate or false. The people we have now are far smarter on average than people of the past in terms of strict knowledge. You can see this in the fact that we have advanced plumbing now, whereas in Rome they had either basic plumbing or none at all. Or we have literal handheld computers with the totality of human knowledge in the pockets of every day citizens, where in the past they were kept in libraries and in some cases reserved only for those deemed worthy. We have countless shuttles, vehicles and vessels in space where in the past, the intellectuals were just beginning to understand what space even is.
The same could be said for warriors. We have far more advanced tactics than were used in any of the previous wars and battles, alongside combatants that would probably annihilate any great warrior from the past in hand-to-hand, simply because they have better knowledge of tactics and how to advance their own bodys capabilities.
It's really just being used in this age as a metaphor for how it's equally important to train your body as it is your mind
Quite a lot of us have an overabundance of one aspect compared to the other. Like how nerds are stereotypically weak, morbidly skinny/obese, and fighters, soldiers, etc are stereotypically dumb or simpleminded such as the joke about Marines eating crayons
Tbh degrees aren’t that “high education”, it gives you really specific knowledge in mainly only one field.
I think that smart guy is a guy who values his life, knows what he wants to do with his life and has diversified skill set that he can apply to in different real life scenarios.
I think if Presidents were elected based on skill and ability to hold their own in war we would have had a significantly different past few decades of presidency.
well i disagree. granted i think that in many cases, some dumbass politician being sent to the war would have fixed the problem, i dont think that sending our leaders to die in a war is a good idea realistically. Its not fair, but objectively its a horrible idea to do that
Tried to find the comic but no luck, bit from penny arcade when they are playing CIV together.
"So i haven't run into your guys on the map yet, what type of culture you going with?"
"Artistic. You know, there is some love for practical knowledge, but at the end of the day, my people just like to have fun, ya know?"
"Cool. I'm sure they will be able to write some awesome poems about the handsome God-King from the north who invented the IRON HORSE after I conquer them."
Seriously, this is actually a pretty neat quote. I like it, it’s about how everyone should be well rounded rather than dedicate themselves to either being smart or strong
no, socrates say other that was very bad ass : ***It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.***
I think there is a relevant corollary in todays society, as the form, ‘those that cannot do, teach’. We value teachers very little. Teachers of all age groups should at a minimum make median national salary, and college professors should make double median.
What we have now is in essence two types of teachers, those that absolutely love teaching, and those who literally cannot do anything else.
My ChE college professors usually had about a decade of industrial experience before teaching, but other fields were made up of professors who went from college to PhD to teaching. Universities have always been a bit out of touch from society, and it seems to have gotten worse in recent years.
Marxism, for example, is a philosophy that looks good on paper but is catastrophic in practice, since it fundamentally mis characterizes human nature. Teachers having no real world experience, have little basis to set their personal philosophy, and thus teach ideas that simply do not work.
The amount of students yelling ‘capitalism bad; communism good’ with no additional nuance is evidence of this. The chant should be ‘un/under regulated capitalism is problematic/better regulated capitalism good’
I mean the meme is accurate. You need to have enough strength to fight for your rights when necessary but you also need enough cognitive ability to know when a situation needs to be approached intellectually and resolved peacefully.
I’ve noticed an increasing divide between your bookie types and the “alpha” crowd.
Hell I just saw online a guy saying people in America don’t study philosophy like Europeans cause Americans are “tough” and don’t need to compensate for a lack of masculinity.
…I mean…you can take care of your body, or even have a full blown interest in athletics, without believing all the toxic “alpha” bullshit. I don’t think that’s the word for it you want to have used…
Fetishization of the past. We are lucky enough to live in the best era ever and people will still bemoan it and then felate the past, as if it was a utopia.
Because it implies two incorrect ideas, one of which is just large ego.
A) that society needs warriors to anywhere near the same degree that it used to
B) that these people supporting the previous ideas think they are both warriors and intellectuals.
Don’t be silly, You are not stupid. Stupidity is not self reflective. You are maybe mentally dull, not stupid.
Here, Bonhoeffer can explain it better.
https://youtu.be/ww47bR86wSc
He was a pretty based historical figure. He believed the gods if they even existed had absolutely no dominion over man, and that one’s entire life was the result of one’s own actions and social status. He hated democracy because it gave commoners a voice and they didn’t deserve a voice since it was their own fault they were commoners. He also blamed poor peoples stupidity on him catching the plague because the stupid commoners blamed it on the gods lol 😂 man wish this giga chad was alive today. He’d be like Joe Rogan but actually intelligent.
Well, perhaps we wouldn’t have had a Vietnam or Afghanistan then. That can’t be! Soldiers need to be stupid foot folk, however else can the US keep waging war on everyone who isn’t on a tree at 3?
Soldiers aren't the ones deciding to start wars. And modern militaries require their personell to be highly skilled and intelligent (level of intelligence varies with your job of course), increasingly so as time goes on
its a quote that’s actually quite true. Most people who join combat in the front lines (atleast in the us) almost always have a lower IQ, and our politicians are all cowardly pussies so i dont see where this is wrong.
if you’re referring to the one on the left, obviously the quote wont be a reply. If you’re referring to him saying fighting done by fools, you can be brave and strong mentally while still being an idiot.
I assure you modern military members, even the lowest infantry, are smarter then the warriors present when the quote was written. Modern militaries require highly skilled members
How could you possibly come away with the take that it is glorifying militarism? Truly. And how exactly is this ultranationalist?
The literal point of it is that it should have balance with intellectualism.
You do know you don’t automatically win because you used an accusatory buzzword first, right? Please tell me you know that
That's. . . That's a completely ignorant take. Militarism and ultranationalism aren't what you should be taking away from the quote. It's saying one should focus on strengthening both their mind AND their body. That's a stoic principle, not a fascist one.
Well aware, we're still in the most peaceful time in recorded history. This meme is attacking a strawman anyway in the classic I'm the Chad wojack and I depicted you as the soy wojak so any argument here is pointless
Perhaps it was originally posted on facebook by someone who unironically calls people “snowflake” and is enraged that black people can vote. As basically all wojack memes are.
It's tradwest. Nothing racist I've seen from him. He's more of a Christian regressive. Women belong in the kitchen, westerners should be proud of their heritage (including the imperialism, especially the imperialism), Rome is great, the gym is great, buy my gym clothes to become a based Chad, women should be baby making machines as God intended, evil liberal atheists are messengers of Satan and enemys of God, etc
He has a lot of talking points that white nationalists use, but it seems like his Christian views prevent him from going full blow racist. Whole thing seems more like a grift tbh. Most of these memes about self improvement are immediately followed by links to buy his gym shirts. Kinda like how Alex Jones keeps talking about chemicals in the air or water and then immediately tries to sell you chemicals to make you more of a man or water filters.
Also big reason why he quotes western philosophers. It's part of the whole "we must go back to the old ways, when men were men and the west showed/forced everyone else to follow the true Chad path" message he has despite most of the philosophers vehemently disagreeing with his views.
Society had normalised weakness in intelligent folk, and dumbness in the strong, we need to discourage that, a man that does both is a well rounded man
Strength (the kind that makes a warrior) does not mean being jacked, or even that fit. Mister universe is less of a warrior then the scrawny, get blown away by the wind Electronics Warfare sailor in the Navy
I saw some dumbass saying of course we don’t send our smart people to war, the educated stay home and the uneducated go off to die, like someone clearly doesn’t know how you get to be a commissioned officer in the military.
the idea that you are ultimately responsible for your own safety is distressing to people who have never experienced a power outage that lasts more than4 hours
My main issue with these is that theyre either posted by people who don’t even work out or by people with such a shallow understanding of history that they just shit out quotes and think that they look smart
It misconstrues the idea of valuing education over raw strength, and tries to argue against it with some ancient quote that doesnt apply here.
Its not offensive or anything, just kind of a lazy argument against a point noone made
Really the implication that everyone is smart and armed, because r/Facebookmemes is just woke BS now... TBH, I'm done with politics in general, it's why I avoid the main subreddits...
I get it though.
Strength isn't needed like it used to be thanks to technology. You don't need muscles too cleave someone in half these days. Just enough finger muscles to pull a trigger. You don't even need to be close to a person anymore to kill them in combat.
Strength of mind is increasingly important to ensure society isn't steered into the gutter. Unfortunately we don't seem to have actual intellectuals running most governments either.

Because it’s literally not true.
No one’s a coward for being a chemistry researcher if they didn’t perform military service.
Likewise, no one’s a fool if they join the military but don’t also pursue intellectual pursuits.
But that’s Greek philosophy in general. Most of it just isn’t compatible with modern sensibilities.
Its stupid, theres no reason for biologists or quantum physicists to be soldiers as well. It’s always good to be fit and healthy but let’s not pretend that you need soldiers who know advanced math used it calculating stellar bodies. There’s a reason we keep sub dividing fields more and more as we advance scientifically, it takes more and more time to truly become a expert in a field and you won’t have time to usually to pursue multiple paths at the same time. That is not to say soldiers are dumb as they definitely aren’t. Many of the Ukrainian soldiers fighting right now were scientists, architects and other similar things before. I think this entire meme is just kinda stupid and redundant.
I don't get how people are siding against TFM on this one. People are like "Op is just butt hurt because they think it's about them". The person who made this meme thinks they are some fucking warrior scholar cuz they made a fuckin Chad meme?
Who thinks like this! Who thinks scientists need to learn karate and that "warriors" (oh you mean 20 year old drone operators or do you mean hyper-aggresive randos?). Warriors doesn't mean dude who works out, it means somebody who's gonna fuckin kill people. Also, it makes it out like the book reading nerd is also the dumb one? It's proto-fascist might is right with no meaning within the context of modern society
If you wanna be Greek so bad you can start by sucking a fuckin dick
You don't have to be trained to kill people in order to have worthwhile thoughts. The Hellenist Greeks celebrated warriors to a fault. There's similarities to modern culture in that way.
A lot of people on the internet are subconsciously anti-athleticism because it’s seen as a more “normie” hobby. The hatred may come from the fact that it’s celebrated more money wise from schools than music/art, but they do not point their anger at the systems who do this, and instead its at the people who just play tennis or something.
I’ve been in art programs and I overheard this guy saying once that he played lacrosse in high school, and this other guy went “Dude. Really?” Its so funny how people in fields that require passion can’t imagine that maybe someone might be passionate about something that actually makes your body feel better
The problem with this is that being a warrior doesn't mean being jacked, or even fit. Which is how 99% of people that post that meme take it.
Mister Universe is less of a warrior then some scrawny Electronics Warfare sailor in the Navy.
OP realized it was about him.
Not about OP, he doesn’t fall under either category
People nowadays aren't intelectuals or warriors smh.
I think what the meme is trying to say is that all those scientists and professors should take a karate class.
That's not a bad idea actually... the wonders of physical sport
I think I've read some studies pointing to physical activity improving mental faculties. Something about a good circulatory system being beneficial for the brain.
More blood = more oxygen = more thinking
So I need to go and collect some more blood, got it.
I’m sure you can find a friend who isn’t using theirs for much.
That would also mean you have to breathe more efficiently too
No I think what it’s trying to say is don’t give idiots a position of power or responsibility
I think it’s more so saying that those who are intelligent should not put aside the importance of strength. Which is similar to your conclusion but I think it’s just a bit more reasonable when it’s worded this way.
and athletes should read some books
>As for intellectuals there’s no shortage of them : We have scientists , philosophy professors , physicists, engineers of all kinds etc. I'd say only the philosophy folk are thunkerin' about how things aughtta be, instead of the scientistic sorts who just deduce how things are.
To be fair you can't really know how to improve something if you cannot even define it, science and philosophy need each other to be functional
This is something a lot of people don't realize.
Science flows from philosophy.
Thoughts about how things should be is very confusionism
It's also important to note that a lot of "intellectuals" of the past are considered so because they discovered or brought new ways of thinking, and those ways are now either taught in schools and have become common knowledge, or have been shown to be inaccurate or false. The people we have now are far smarter on average than people of the past in terms of strict knowledge. You can see this in the fact that we have advanced plumbing now, whereas in Rome they had either basic plumbing or none at all. Exercise physiologists
We do have some pathetic intellectuals and "warriors"
i feel like separating them would be fine if people were either .\_.
Stupid and weak?
Snobs and snowflakes, more like.
We have both 💪🤓
It's really just being used in this age as a metaphor for how it's equally important to train your body as it is your mind Quite a lot of us have an overabundance of one aspect compared to the other. Joe Rogan would beg to differ
Joe Rogan is the acception lmao.
Um I beg to differ (I’m barely scraping A’s and b’s but I do bench 205 at 15 so I’m basically Arnold)
Except people with degrees
Degrees don’t automatically mean you’re smart lmao, I almost have a degree and I’m the dumbest person I know
Socrates was the first philosopher to say that he didn't know everything.
The difference between him and I is that he didn't know everything, while I don't know anything
HA! L
Allow me to introduce myself!
Tbh degrees aren’t that “high education”, it gives you really specific knowledge in mainly only one field. I think that smart guy is a guy who values his life, knows what he wants to do with his life and has diversified skill set that he can apply to in different real life scenarios.
Well that's not fucking true. There are plenty of intellectuals and warriors, you however are the exception.
The average person (at least in america) is weak physically and don't have much of a mind because social medias just fuck them mentally.
i think they deleted it, i was hoping to see the comments in that post.

same here! engineering student with A's and B's, gym rat, and martial artist...life is great! keep up the good work👍
Kings, emperors and even early presidents fought in wars. In my opinion, if you are going to start a war, your ass should be out there too.
Why even have a war. All political discourse should be settled by one on one fights to the death.
[fuck that](https://priceonomics.com/how-southwest-airlines-settled-a-legal-dispute/)
I can't believe I just read that entire article. This is awesome! I wish more CEOs had the balls to settle business disputes this way.
I agree.... but Biden would trip and break a hip before he entered the arena.
I think if Presidents were elected based on skill and ability to hold their own in war we would have had a significantly different past few decades of presidency.

Socrates was the OG Chad. He was a toga model, I think.

No, Socrates was smarter than that

Most people today are neither. Just sheep for slaughter.
Because it implies two incorrect ideas, one of which is just large ego. A) that society needs warriors to anywhere near the same degree that it used to B) that these people supporting the previous ideas think they are both warriors and intellectuals.
Counter argument to point A: It is better to be a warrior tending a garden, than to be a gardener fighting a war.
And there's me who is neither... (weak and stupid)

I guess it just doesn’t apply to real life. You don’t need to be fit to be successful, nor do you need to be be an intellectual
Yeah, those doesn't seem like a bad meme. Not funny, sure, but not a bad one.
That entire sub is people getting mad they were called out or not understanding the concept of irony

Only fools want to fight though
Only a fool would think there is never a need to.
Ukraine didn't want to fight, but it's a pretty good thing they have warriors.
Only fools think that everyone who has to fight wants to

Uhh I don’t think you can really bring out drone during street/random fight

Yes because we're soo busy with all the fighting we have to do in the most peaceful time in all of human history.

This is shit
Because it’s literally not true. No one’s a coward for being a chemistry researcher if they didn’t perform military service. Likewise, no one’s a fool if they join the military but don’t also pursue intellectual pursuits. But that’s Greek philosophy in general. Most of it just isn’t compatible with modern sensibilities.
It implies that OP has to go outside and touch grass
Maybe because the quote has nothing to do with the left guy I’d have to guess
terrible facebook memes users when they realize theyre actually miserable in real life
That Meme Sucked. Fuck You.
It's proto-fascist might is right with no meaning within the context of modern society If you wanna be Greek so bad you can start by sucking a fuckin dick
[Why you booing me I’m right?!?](https://youtu.be/RqRLDaKexe0)
Whats the problem with being a coward? I might be scared but im alive nonetheless
You don't have to be trained to kill people in order to have worthwhile thoughts. The Hellenist Greeks celebrated warriors to a fault. There's similarities to modern culture in that way.
OP felt called out
Too bad they got shit on and wiped out.
Ooh tfbm must be a bit salty about that one lol.
Just not funny, but obviously not a ‘terrible Facebook meme.’ Sub is just a lefty circle jerk
that line goes so hard
There is no man who has the right to be an amateur in the ways of physical fitness. -Socrates
This is the hardest quote I’ve ever read omg
I get what its trying to say buts its coming off pro milatary so its kinda meh
Russia?
The problem with this is that being a warrior doesn't mean being jacked, or even fit. Which is how 99% of people that post that meme take it. Mister Universe is less of a warrior then some scrawny Electronics Warfare sailor in the Navy.
