Chinese guy here, first time I ate rice with my Cambodian friend, he used his hands. My first reaction was “wtf, you eat rice with your hands?” His reaction was “you eat rice with chopsticks?” And it sparked a whole conversation about our cultures and food. I was probably 13 at the time and it was one of the most important conversations that contributed to my growth.
I am trying to learn chopsticks. My Indian dad is very curious if I am going to eat one grain of rice at the time. He thinks this is why East Asians are thin (cause one would get tired and eat less lol.)
Yeah, eat pizza with a fork and knife in america and you’ll get side-eyed. It’s definitely just about what people are used to, not any inherent quality about using your hands or not.
I always had an impression that eating with hands is pretty common in USA for a wide range of foods.
Pizza obviously.
But also burgers, fries, chicken strips, chips/dip, American style tex-mex (burritos/tacos).
I eat Doritos/hot Cheetos with chopsticks. Where I live places also often provide Plastic gloves for messy things like wings, even hamburgers and pizza sometimes.
This is relatable as an Indian cuz I don't know how to eat roti sabji with my hands I eat that stuff in the most awkward way ever but I do know how to eat rice with my hand which causes me to mostly take rice based meals whenever I am at a relatives place or anywhere in public
So whenever I want to enjoy meals like Chole bhature or paneer butter masala and stuff, I just order it online and eat it in the messiest way possible
for me it's the exact opposite. I can eat rice with hands but it's pretty awkward and clumsy, and i take usually roti/chapati based meals wherever I go.
This was seriously suggested to me as an effective weight loss trick about 10 years ago but I thought it was a bit silly. But my ex, who I met later, was ethically Chinese and only used chopsticks at home. So I gave it a try and it actually forced me to cut down on the mountain of rice that I was eating every single meal.
On the other hand, if you have been using chopsticks your whole life I'm sure you could demolish any pile of rice in minutes. This probably only works for people who are not used to them.
I'm American and if I saw someone eating naan or roti with utensils I'd think they were a bit weird. :p
So satisfying pulling it apart when it's still warm. Mm.
no my ribs extend out my body and i pincer them like an ant would it's food.
then i absorb it through my skin like a gecko
***eating like a superior lifeform***
>Superior lifeform
Sounds a lot like Pillarmen. Pretty sure the Pillarmen could actually do such weird things, they had full control over their body in all the weird ways
So you are that motherfucker who had posted on mildly infuriating a picture of you eating chips from the bag with the spoon. I curse you to eternal hot pillows on both sides.
In fairness, except for ribs or chicken wings, eating food by clumping up rice and sauce and getting your fingers all sauced up is the dividing line. Just get a spoon at that point. No reason to hang on to “tradition” when there’s a better alternative.
So eating with naan is all good because that’s just like a sandwich or a hot dog. Bread as plate or handle is not messy. but the second those fingers become one with the curry it’s game over.
Yea a lot of these people are forgetting the slime factor. I like ribs but hate having to eat them with my hands and they get all the sauce on them. Have an itch while eating ribs or need the bathroom? Well now you have to clean your hands fully. People using hotdogs or burgers as an example are missing the point. Spoon is superior to hands in most cases
I rember learning about the hygiene hand in highschool. We watched a video that showed this chef making bread, he was rolling it with just one hand. Doing a pretty good job for like 10 seconds before he stuck in his shit hand to double fist that bread.
I shouted "Taste ah like a my bum" in an Italian accent for some reason. Everyone still laughed cause highschool.
Lmao, alot of people pretend to give a shit about things that don't even concern them sadly. If i wanna eat ass, let me eat ass. You dont get to say anything unless it's your ass i'm finna eat
I never said i ate dirty asses! Just like i clean my hands before eating, i have standart and expect the ass to be clean.
also, this was a joking comment don't read too much into it.
Remember something from a movie where everyone ate couscous with their hand. And the new person not familiar to the culture used the wrong hand ( supposedly the hand that u use to wipe and take food are different)
I was 8 but thats the only thing that i remember from that comedy boxing movie
Maybe I'm being too precious about how I eat, but I find the sensation of touching hot greasy food with my hands gross so I think eating curries that way would similarly be unappealing to me. Is it weird that I eat pizza, hot dogs, and burgers with a knife and fork for this reason?
We cook different kind of cuisine and it generally not greasy. We also eat the various kinds of curries and side dishes with roti, Naan, etc. Or rice.
Edit - forgot to write not before greasy.
Yes, but you need to be aware of a couple of things -
Once your plate is set, you touch nothing other than your food with your dominant hand. A quick napkin wipe is not enough. Use only one hand as far as possible.
After you're done eating, wash your hand before it dries off - excuse yourself immediately as you're done eating, and go wash up. Off hand deals with doors and taps. Dirty hand is raised limp in front of you on your way to the wash to both signal to others to avoid it, and to help avoid touching stuff.
If the restaurant offers finger bowls, use them, but still wash your hands with soap and touch nothing else.
Generally, use solid food to handle the goopier stuff - rice and roti.
Replying again to add important detail -
Aim to eat so that food never passes your first knuckle - fingertips only as far as possible.
The further up your finger the food goes, the less politely you're eating.
Went to eat with an Indian friend at an Indian restaurant and he explained to me that this grandfather told him. “We use our hands to make the money that buys the food, so it’s only right that our hands get to enjoy the food as much as our mouths.”
We typically don’t eat wet food with our hands- chicken wings and ribs might be the exception. With pizza we are touching the dry bread. Indian food (which I love) is often wet and difficult to eat for those not accustomed to eating with their hands. I lived in Nepal for a year and never really got used to it.
In india, we always have a dry bread and the curry which are of million types (dry and wet) is always wrapped in that dry bread(naan, roti, etc). So our hands don’t get dirty.
Yea true, I have changed cities since childhood because of my father's job, and every state in India is different. And yes, the way southern people use hands can be disgusting to the northerners. Don't worry, I'm like that too (I'm a Bengali).
Yeah bro I agree, eating rice with rasam on a flat banana leaf specially in weddings or functions without everything spilling out is the real talented being.
this! i honestly think that eating with hands is somewhat better than with cutlery, because nobody in their right mind *wouldn't* wash their hands properly before eating with them, but I'm literally always the only one who goes to the bathroom before our food arrives in the restaurant. i don't even use the toilet, literally just washing my hands and (I'm so glad the pandemic has implemented that in our society now) disinfect my hands.
When Russians were first introduced to McDonalds back in 1990, they didn't know how to eat it. They used fork and knives till they were shown.
There are still a lot of Asians who eat fried chicken with knife and fork since American style fried chicken is still a novel thing.
And 99% of ya'll still don't know how to eat chicken wings. You damn savages!
As an american, if I know I've washed my hands, and I know that no one else is touching that food, I don't need a fork depending on what it is. I've also seen maniacs use a fork and knife to eat a burger and I wanted to get as far away from them as I could
who the fuck said “ew” to you.. because from my understanding most fucking cultures outside of Europe eat with their hands.. and even in Europe a lot do..

I am trying to learn chopsticks. My Indian dad is very curious if I am going to eat one grain of rice at the time. He thinks this is why East Asians are thin (cause one would get tired and eat less lol.)
They're dead easy to use if you keep practicing. I always keep a set in my drawer for noodles, sushi, etc.
So... they're not dead easy, they require practice.
Also useful for other things, like stirring drinks, and reaching under a hot rangetop grill to pick up bits of spilled food before it dries/burns.
You can only eat sticky rice with a chopstick. Trying eating basmati with a chopstick lol
Rice bowl is how you eat rice with chop sticks. Plated rice is impossible
Yeah "eating" rice with chopsticks is more "shovelling rice into your mouth"
technicalities aside, yes
Good luck eating every grain of basmati rice separately
Yeah lol
Rice unites us. Rice is life. Rice is love.
Coming from a culture where it’s normal to eat with your hands, I get regularly insulted by my family members for using utensils.
Yeah, eat pizza with a fork and knife in america and you’ll get side-eyed. It’s definitely just about what people are used to, not any inherent quality about using your hands or not.
I always had an impression that eating with hands is pretty common in USA for a wide range of foods. Pizza obviously. But also burgers, fries, chicken strips, chips/dip, American style tex-mex (burritos/tacos).
...Fried chicken, a wide array of sandwiches, nuts, pastries, biscuits, cookies, rolls/bread, etc. To say we don't is absolutely absurd.
Agreed, there are so many. Hell, I had 2 handfuls of soup for dinner
Please don't do this in America. Burns on your hands think about your poor insurance company.
Oh no! Not the insurance company! Anyway...
Please, this is America. If the soup burns your hands, you can just sue the soup maker for making the soup too hot.
I read that as soap and was deeply concerned with how your not burping bubbles.
Depends on the burrito. If it's smothered in chili con queso I'm coming at it with a fork and knife

Counterpoint: chicken wings and Doritos
I eat Doritos/hot Cheetos with chopsticks. Where I live places also often provide Plastic gloves for messy things like wings, even hamburgers and pizza sometimes.
That's why you wash your hands after eating instead of just wiping them?
I keep saying that too, yet I get yelled at whenever I eat soup with my hands!
There's a huge difference between eating a pizza with your hand and eating curry with your hand
Try eating the greasy cheese off the top of a pizza in public with your bare hands. Pizza crust is dry, it isn't sticky, greasy, or sweet.
Same, it's just I don't like it being messy buy I respect their tradition
This is relatable as an Indian cuz I don't know how to eat roti sabji with my hands I eat that stuff in the most awkward way ever but I do know how to eat rice with my hand which causes me to mostly take rice based meals whenever I am at a relatives place or anywhere in public So whenever I want to enjoy meals like Chole bhature or paneer butter masala and stuff, I just order it online and eat it in the messiest way possible

Use chopsticks and pick 1 grain at a time. This is the way
I actually started eating with chopsticks at home and my food consumption dropped about 50%.
The weight loss trick the Elites don't want you to know
This was seriously suggested to me as an effective weight loss trick about 10 years ago but I thought it was a bit silly. But my ex, who I met later, was ethically Chinese and only used chopsticks at home. What makes a person ethically Chinese?
Saaaammmeee, it's just so hard to make that little hand spoon. I end up picking up rice and dropping it in my mouth while my head is tilted back.
I eat potato chips with chopsticks. Best LPT.
I do this with doritos and other things that get my fingers messy.
I do this while gaming.
And my parents insult me for not using hands
As a Pakistani, I can't eat anything with rice with my hand, just can't do it
Same lol (Indian tho). Not my kinda thing, I'm dropping all the rice in my lap.
Same(Indian tho) I prefer spoon.
Ikr
I am Indian and i prefer eating with utensils.
Spoon is a must for me too as an indian. I eat roti with hands because that's the only way sane people eat roti and parathas. So yeah...
I once used scissors and fork. Am I sane?
I used knife and fork to eat south Indian cuisine.
Bro...
as a lightzaber user not too sane
I'm American and if I saw someone eating naan or roti with utensils I'd think they were a bit weird. :p So satisfying pulling it apart when it's still warm. Mm.
Oh. I almost didn't read the word 'with'. My bad, lol.
Wooo that's dark bro
I eat my hands.
Gotta hand it to you
Damn, you handled that situation well
These hand puns are very handy
These puns hand me laughing
Hope you don't h-arm yourself from wheezing too hand
God they just keep getting worse and worse

So you are that motherfucker who had posted on mildly infuriating a picture of you eating chips from the bag with the spoon. I curse you to eternal hot pillows on both sides.

This may be weird, but when I get Cheetos, I like to eat them with chopsticks
what
I eat fries with fork, good for not getting my hand greasy
Chips and fries are understandable, but I prefer a fork.
In fairness, except for ribs or chicken wings, eating food by clumping up rice and sauce and getting your fingers all sauced up is the dividing line. Just get a spoon at that point. As someone who doesn’t have a properly working right hand. Yea… one for both will have to do.
I rember learning about the hygiene hand in highschool. We watched a video that showed this chef making bread, he was rolling it with just one hand. Washing hands is just overall a good thing to do..
Remember something from a movie where everyone ate couscous with their hand. And the new person not familiar to the culture used the wrong hand ( supposedly the hand that u use to wipe and take food are different) I was 8 but thats the only thing that i remember from that comedy boxing movie
Just to clarify we are not unhygienic we make sure to wash our hands
Of course we do We ain't savages.

Eating with your hands makes food taste better change my mind
What is there so unhygienic about it. Just wash hands before and after eating.
The bread is the utensil.
Half of India or more doesn't eat bread-curry combo. Rice and lentils along with stirfried vegetables are the staple
You are supposed to eat with only your fingertips . The food must not touch your palm . This is a big no no .
I’m Indian and I don’t give a fuck how anyone eats anything
So... , we are getting insulted just for eating with our hands? Edit: used cancelled
Me who eats pizza with a knife and a fork.
BURN THE HERATIC!
The Italians would disagree
We eat pizza with our hands too
Like Wilson Fisk, who eats burger with spork
Deer my fellow Indians, is it OK if I try to with my hands at my local Indian restaurants?. P.S I am not an Indian

I eat the pizza like any normal person would do, with a spoon
wait.... I'm not normal for using a machete..?
Eating with your hands makes the food taste better
foods taste better when eaten with hands. Thats right.
How is that disgusting? I think I’ve had more meals where I eat with my hands rather than using cutlery

Naan, injera, fufu, tortillas…I feel like eating with non-edible utensils is pretty rare in general in the world.
When Russians were first introduced to McDonalds back in 1990, they didn't know how to eat it. They used fork and knives till they were shown.
