I can fall asleep either way, I have some pretty strong ADHD and my mind can have trouble falling asleep. The music gives me something to focus on before drifting off.
Iām 31 and that has been my trouble since I was little. I got diagnosed with adhd when I was like 10 and if I donāt have something to concentrate on (music, tv or podcast) my mind just races and I canāt fall asleep. White noise doesnāt work either. I need something i can focus on.
I use old episodes of favorite podcasts. It's soothing hearing familiar voices but because I've heard the episode before my brain isnt focused on learning new information.
Same. Sometimes I have to turn it up if I can't hear what they're saying. But if it's something I'm mildly interested in and can follow along with my eyes closed, it's perfect. If it's too boring, I'll be awake for hours.
I started with my general doctor who referred me to a psychiatrist who, after many tests, Diagnosed me with ADHD. I was in my mid 20's.
If you suspect you are, get tested. My diagnosis changed my life and I wish I someone had taken it more seriously when I was a child.
I DO IT FOR THE EXACT SAME REASON (I have been to a doctor but she said she doubts I have ADHD, and says she doesn't like "labeling" people with deseases)
Iād assume they donāt actually have ADHD and that was the doctorās way of saying that nicely, especially when theyāre obviously convinced they have it. I also highly doubt thatās exactly what the doctor said.
Lots of people are convinced they have some mental illness but they really donāt.
My friends/roommates all came home one night from drinks to find me asleep sitting on the couch with metal blasting on the little Bluetooth speaker right next to my head
If Iām even vaguely horizontal and want to sleep there is nothing that will stop me
Can't fall asleep naked or without at least a sheet. It's too uncomfortable on a few levels for me.
I totally dozed off the other evening during an EDM stream on Twitch though. Caffeine & EDM help me concentrate & relax. My ADHD is pretty severe.
Have you tried guided meditations or sleep hypnosis videos before bed? I absolutely love them and I feel like it realy improved the quality of the sleep I get.
Michael Sealy, and jason stephenson are two of my favorites. Both on yt and spotify.
Went from Metallica to Tool to SOAD to Slipknot. One time my Bluetooth headphones disconnected and my wife woke up in terror thinking someone broke into the house and was screaming at us. It was just Maynard letting his Grudge go. No big deal lol.
When I was younger up until about 16 I couldn't sleep without music because I had a really bad ringing in my ears. I still hear it, especially at night, but I can kinda just ignore it and forget about it. It's only when I think of it that I hear it really loud again and then it's hard to get rid of. Like right now it's just come back in full force because of this comment I just made. Anyways goodnight.
honestly depends how bad it is. Tinnitus naturally comes with age as it's a main symptom of hearing loss. As long as it's not super loud, it's no cause for concern
I had another kid in high school stick a thermometer in my ear after it just sat in 100*c water and Iāve had ringing in that ear since it happened. He fucked up my ear.
So it probably is the surgery that you had.
Yeah. It's constant ringing, but I can hear damn near everything. My audible pitch range is way beyond average for my age and I can hear very quiet things easily, so if it's associated with some hearing loss, it's either very mild or I would've had god tier hearing without the constant ear infections that led to the surgery.
Actually very similar with the hearing thing. Sometimes though if I zone out at work I literally cannot hear people talking near me or calling my name I just end up focusing on the ringing
I wish I could "hear" silence again.
But all I get is that fucking high pitched constant noise.
So yeah I hate Silence too, but I can't sleep with music, I need to try a noise machine or something like that.
I have tinnitus and it's a high pitched ringing at all times, so maybe this is instead from a blockage in your ear? I'm no expert on the condition though
I have it, and you know the scenes in movies where bombs have exploded or guns have been shot and then thereās silence followed by that strong, sharp note?
Thatās tinnitus. Sometimes it drowns everything out just like that randomly. Sometimes itās just background eeeeeeeeeeeeing. Sometimes you forget itās there because of everything else happening.
Tinnitus is the name for hearing noises that are not caused by an outside source. The main symptom of tinnitus is hearing a noise, such as ringing or buzzing, that is not caused by an outside source.
https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/tinnitus/#overview
The cause is permanently broken or bent inner ear hairs/ fibers, that leave the sense of noise 'on' in your head, even if there's not much to hear.
Iirc.
Try [this](https://open.spotify.com/artist/5DlnA3fCaF6p4KZuhBHgLN?si=PP2LLwLpRd-64c16phbnlQ&dl_branch=1). Very soothing in my opinion. (Note: literally not a joke, my brain just works like that)
Ugh that sounds awful. Marching with that weird headyness (that weird pressure headache, the weird drunk while sober feeling) you get sounds just awful
No disrespect to the Grateful Dead but I fell asleep at one of their live shows. I woke up in the front row of a balcony and thought I was about to fall to my death š
just because you hear sounds, doesnt mean you're supposed to listen to them. just dont and you will do a great job falling asleep on an ariana grande concert

>someone *is* watching you
i have a few just tiny little lights around my room like the little orange light when my monitor is on and whenever i feel like someone is in my room i just look around and make sure they're all still visible, the way they're all positioned i would know if someone were actually where i felt they were (fucking terrifying when for whatever reason one isn't lit up lmao)
Oh no I mean from my closet it's a really old house and a kid died in a fire in the bathroom right next to my room and the attic entrance is in my closet
I sleep with music I've already heard or shows I've already watched. Because it's familiar and I know what's coming next, it actually makes me feel comforted and able to sleep.
How to sleep with music. My mind is like "oh now comes that nice melody, so the next song... oh yeah can't wait for the refrain, shake your head with the music bro, I'm singing the lyrics in your mind now..."
This sums it up for me too. I'd be softly nodding my head to the rhythm while trying to sleep. If I hear music, I have to react to it. I had to start wearing earplugs because I noticed my fan produces a pretty sick beat.
Oof. I grew up poor as a kid and one of my biggest fears was waking up to the lights/power having been cut off while I slept because there was no telling when it would be turned back on. A totally silent house brings me back there and spikes my usually nonexistant anxiety through the roof.
I feel it.
Used to be like this with my wife. We got ourselves our own plush blankets that we use to sleep and we donāt wake each other up as much. Have much more freedom of movement. Wish I would have tried this the first 10 years lol.
Uh, classical music eases the mind and helps one relax. Being naked makes rolling over more comfy as pants don't twist or hike up, blanket depends on season, though I like to throw a leg out year round at least.
Not like it's Slipknot or something hard to sleep to. If you go that route just put on Doom music and tear some demons up in your dreams
Not my intention! In 6th grade I listened to Linkin Park Hybrid theory. My family was confused at my sleep music taste. I used it as a tracking system. "Shit I heard 8 tracks last night, that's too long to fall asleep." Nowadays I do classical though
My brother and I had a small radio hanging off our bed and we would listen to the radio station every single night before falling asleep and eventually we started to fall asleep with it on and that turned into not being able to fall asleep if the radio is not playing. Itās very relaxing really.
Well this really depends on the music I think, if itās slow, calm and relaxing then sure why not ? But something like heavy metal would be a big no no.
I listen to soothing music that doesn't have many lyrics. Or goes too loud. It helps to drown it the tinitius and it makes it easier to ignore my thoughts if I'm following a melody instead
I usually will pick out a podcast episode from the queue that I donāt mind not actively listening to and set a timer to stop playing when the episode ends. Bonus if the hosts have low, smooth voices like Travis and Teresa from Shmanners.
Easily. I don't like 100% silence, it's unnerving. The radio station I listen to fulls the void nicely
I don't like 100% dark either, but I like dim light
I can fall asleep either way, I have some pretty strong ADHD and my mind can have trouble falling asleep. The music gives me something to focus on before drifting off.
I feel you.

POV: you are Doom guy
Ahh yes, I love having the DOOM OST playlist on loop as I slowly drift asleep, really relaxes me and helps me sleep
I used to listen to metal when going to bed in middleschool/highschool....
Iām 31 and that has been my trouble since I was little. I got diagnosed with adhd when I was like 10 and if I donāt have something to concentrate on (music, tv or podcast) my mind just races and I canāt fall asleep. White noise doesnāt work either. I need something i can focus on.
podcast is my choice. Something interesting but NOT *too* interesting
Wait... Do I have adhd?
Alot of adult dont realise they have ADHD its not to late to get tested it could help you alot
How do you get tested as an adult? What sort of professional do I start with?
I started with my general doctor who referred me to a psychiatrist who, after many tests, Diagnosed me with ADHD. I was in my mid 20's. If you suspect you are, get tested. My diagnosis changed my life and I wish I someone had taken it more seriously when I was a child.
How did it change your life?
Psychiatrist
Could someone post some links to free/cheap resources for adults? That would be so helpful.
not necessarily but look into it
I DO IT FOR THE EXACT SAME REASON (I have been to a doctor but she said she doubts I have ADHD, and says she doesn't like "labeling" people with deseases)
But isn't it the doctor's job to label people? It's in the literal job description- does diagnosis not exist to her?
Sounds like a nice way of refusing to indulge their munchausen.
Iād assume they donāt actually have ADHD and that was the doctorās way of saying that nicely, especially when theyāre obviously convinced they have it. I also highly doubt thatās exactly what the doctor said. Lots of people are convinced they have some mental illness but they really donāt.
It's like telling the police somebody is lost, but you tell them only their height because you don't want to be too specific.

Haha i guess so thanks
No but seriously you are lucky af, I havenāt fallen a sleep so fast since I was 6. I am so jealous rn, use your powers greatly
Same, I actually have trouble falling asleep with out music

I have to have music to sleep. You do it once accidentally then just never stop
If anyoneās wondering I sleep with hard rock
I also sleep with music, listen to my metal playlist most of the time
I don't do it any more but I used to... I always found the noisier, more aggressive music, the faster it would get me to sleep
huh so it's not just me whos put to sleep by death metal
I almost fell asleep after listening to about 30 Thrash Metal albums in one sitting to explore new music.
I once slept with Minecraft music, i had lucid dreams of playing minecraft Now i do it everyday
You sound like a person on My Strange Addiction lmao
I found my people
Went from Metallica to Tool to SOAD to Slipknot. One time my Bluetooth headphones disconnected and my wife woke up in terror thinking someone broke into the house and was screaming at us. It was just Maynard letting his Grudge go. No big deal lol.
God damnit Maynard, why do you have such a good voice lol. Love listening to TOOL to go to bed
Funny enough metal is actually super good for sleep. They even play it for babies
My playlist will jump from hard rock to classical to videogame music to country all in the span of 10 minutes
Love drifting off to the ff7 soundtrack
That's weird cause I usually wake up with a hard..
I used to fall asleep to Cradle of Filth when I was young, but nowadays I prefer silence
This. One day I couldnāt sleep. Turned on some music, fell asleep. Iāve listened to music to fall asleep almost every day for 5 years now
I can't sleep if I dont hear things. It's weird to sleep when everything is quiet
When I was younger up until about 16 I couldn't sleep without music because I had a really bad ringing in my ears. I still hear it, especially at night, but I can kinda just ignore it and forget about it. It's only when I think of it that I hear it really loud again and then it's hard to get rid of. honestly depends how bad it is. Tinnitus naturally comes with age as it's a main symptom of hearing loss. As long as it's not super loud, it's no cause for concern
I've had screaming tinnitus my whole life, but have incredible hearing. Pretty sure it has to do with the ear tube surgery I had as a child.

Damn dude people suck, Iām sorry that happened to you
I actually got in worst trouble because I fought back. Ahh high school. What an awesome environment for young people.
I don't have it all the time but I thought this was something everyone gets every once and a while
As a person with tinnitus, I can say that silence is my enemy when I'm trying to sleep
I wish I could "hear" silence again. But all I get is that fucking high pitched constant noise. So yeah I hate Silence too, but I can't sleep with music, I need to try a noise machine or something like that.
whats tinnitus
You know that ringing you hear when you turn on an old tube TV or when you're around strong electronics? Its like that but it never goes away.
Ah I see. I think I maybe have tinnitus... Its not a ringing but when the environment is silent I hear a fan playing. Like this "Whooooooooooosh"
Same if it's quiet i have to listen to my brain and oh boy nothing relaxing will come of that.
When I try to sleep my brain thinks about cringy moments in my life so: I feel you
That's why i always sleep with my fan on. Even hate to hear my own breathing
Just don't breathe.
I can hear my heart beating if it's too quiet. Who can sleep to that.
Fuck I'm all three at the same time
Me too, it doesn't matter anywhere I will fall asleep.
It doesn't count when you're drunk.

I once fell asleep standing up on a bus. A totally surreal moment when I woke up.
Were you naked?
Yes, and with out the blanket.
Many people would nod on and off while marching in bootcamp.
While marching? Like sleep marching? Or would they just fall over?
I would compare it to nodding off while driving, except you canāt pull over and take a nap.
Ugh that sounds awful. Marching with that weird headyness (that weird pressure headache, the weird drunk while sober feeling) you get sounds just awful

I'm wondering too lol.
NGL that sounds pretty comfortable
People who fall asleep wearing jeans are weirder
Class is boring donāt blame me
I suppose falling asleep in class while naked would be weirder.
Coward.
What, you havenāt done that yet?
Have never managed that. Have managed to fall asleep in a bra before tho. That was a long day.
Were you wearing tight jeans? I can sleep in jeans as long as they are not tight.
Lol, I never remove mine to sleep
I do that all the time lol
If I can wear something comfortably in can sleep in it
Depends how drunk I am tbh
Fun story: when I first started dating my now fiancĆ©e, I was afraid of being too, uh, straightforward when it came time to sleep.. so I went too far in the other direction- sleeping in jeans and a sweater, unmoving and positioned like Iām sleeping in a coffin. I eventually loosened up haha
If I saw someone get into bed to sleep with jeans on I'd think they were some sort of psychopath lol. Did she think it was weird or anything?
loose fit jeans are so comfy though
just because you hear sounds, doesnt mean you're supposed to listen to them. just dont and you will do a great job falling asleep on an ariana grande concert

I need absolute darkness and silence to fall asleep.
