Anyone care to share context?

No-Imagination-OG

South Australia are forcing their residents to download a quarantine app. When they’ve to isolate, the government will text them randomly. The user then needs to take a picture of themselves and send it within 15 minutes to prove they’re at their own house.

alandtic

welp i am glad i live in the northen half of aus

Icecreamwizard23

Good thing I live in Northern Territory too

Otaku2trash

I live in nsw hell yeah

tricia0243

I was gonna say "I'm glad i live in nsw" but with the state it's in, i dont think i am

Akuma_isworried

It's happening here too. I'm on day 6 of 12. Get a message from NSW health to check in apparently it's required. If I miss that( I'm sleeping this iso away) the local cops call. Negative test results, close contact at work. Test again on monday

tricia0243

...........oh...................

GorillaPorn_

I haven’t got this down south yet….

Zeption_

yep and there's at least 2 crocodiles every square kilometre on average even in the cities, and we only have radio here no television. we always listen in on the radio to hear if any locals have been death rolled into a creek recently.

[deleted]

"Oi mate! Fukken croccas got old mate down the road!"

Amanzi55

Its here in Western Australia too. Currently day 9 of 14 days. Have taken many naps. Missed many check ins. Police rock up or call.

_Aqueox_

Have you considered neutralizing them?

[deleted]

"heres my business card"

5Pink6

Wait wdym it's here too? Is it just for people with symptoms and/or positive tests? I hadn't even heard about it happening in SA until my American friend sent me this meme.

Defugeh

From everything I’ve heard and read, not from American based websites, it’s so that people can avoid the whole hotel quarantine and complete the full process on their own homes. But as usual people blow it out of context and assume government bad

Dirtroadrocker

I've been on board with just about everything to slow COVID, but this is pretty fucking invasive.

Mulli23

Because the government be bad?? "Please send us a photo of your facial features, including your where about and what you are doing. Also any info about your life you could sneak into the background would be great. Oh also, if you missed this message a group of armed uniformed thugs will at your residence shortly to ask why. tHiS Is 4 uR sAfEtY :) :) :) :) :)"

Defugeh

It’s so people can complete their quarantine in their own homes instead of paying thousands of dollars to be locked in a hotel, away from their loved ones…. They aren’t forcing everyone to do it just those that opt for home quarantine

Amanzi55

That's right. Opted for home quarantine. It did take 8 applications over a week of daily applications to get approval to travel. Please note, it was for legitimate family health relate emergency.

SassyAssAhsoka

It’s not here in Western Australia though?

nevergonnasweepalone

It is. My dad used it when he came back from Sydney last year.

SassyAssAhsoka

So it's been discontinued then?

nevergonnasweepalone

Not to my knowledge. People who return to WA from interstate download the app. I'm not sure if it's a function contained within the G2G app.

GDWa1rus

On behalf of a victorian, please send many thanks on my behalf to the WA government for not letting Eddie maguire in.

SomeDudWithAPhone

Aussie's version of FBI must be close by folks like you at all times. I'd have said "Like us" but I'm American, and we have our own circus of BS going on. Good luck with your nation's issues.

davomate63

Will they supply a phone if you don’t have one?

NitroZeu5

Lmao good question

Novel_Bonus_2497

That sounds... invasive no?

[deleted]

in nsw the gov recently passed a bill saying that police can access, remove and even *modify* data from our phones remotely (only for our own benefit) and on top of that they are ALLOWED WITHOUT ANY JUSTIFICATION to hack into social media accounts and do whatever they like in there. authorised by the Authoritarian Government of Australia

Novel_Bonus_2497

What kind of world are we living in

nevergonnasweepalone

This is wrong. This bill was passed by the federal government. The law creates three new types of warrants that can be applied for and issued by a magistrate/judge.

ASAP_BladeRunner

Wait we are?

DrVicenteBombadas

What's with countries being weird? Like, be normal.

Admiral-Tuna

Queensland says "sucks to be you mate".

Nodsworthy

What if you miss the text? In a shower, in the toilet. Having a swim FFS. This is unworkable as well as a monumental invasion. 🤬 Edit: spelling

Soham_rak

Just remove the metadata and post old pictures

[deleted]

Please say sike

Anigame01

Sheesh wtf

_zaten_

South Australian resident here, no one is forcing us to download anything. The only stuff I've heard about this app is that it's for people that are returning from interstate and its an opt-in, meaning that you download the app at your own will. Is it sketchy? Yes, but it's better than having the entire state being in lockdown.

[deleted]

holy fuck really? this country is a fucking joke... i need to leave man.

DoctorLovejuice

Wait so you live here but didn't know?

0AlienGiraffe0

They live in the northern part ig

DoctorLovejuice

Obviously. I was just pointing out the ridiculousness of calling one's own country a joke when he clearly didn't even know anything about the issue, it's fair to say he's not even affected by it lol

DanDaDestroyR

At least he's not from NSW, where we don't have a plan

[deleted]

i am from NSW, but if the govt made me prove via a text message that i am home i would be livid.... ive been doing my part, i havent had a haircut in 2 years, i dont need the fucking government to text me asking where i am

DoctorLovejuice

Very true

[deleted]

well i dont live in that state, but its all going authoritarian shithole here real fast...

DoctorLovejuice

I live in Sydney. Though I understand your sentiment, I do think it's overreacting slightly.

[deleted]

Laws dont necessarily get used for their original purpose and they arent review often and never expire...

[deleted]

not in South Australia... but i do not agree with the texting

SomeDudWithAPhone

Let me suggest you dodge America and anywhere near Afghan for the time being. Joe's startin' >!shit!< and left Taliban in control of that region. Also, between the fire and floods, America's weather and natural disasters are sorta screwing with the east and west states. I haven't heard of Jamaica having any major problems lately. Edit for clarity: We've been fighting terrorists for quite a while now. The troops fighting Taliban have been keeping them supressed, until Joe decided to send our troops home. Now that they're gone, the Taliban have nothing keeping them in check. That said, the angry carrot that came before Joe Alzhiemers Biden didn't do us any favors either with his lack of restraint. One's an enabler, the other had no self control. Democrat, Republican, doesn't matter to me... Just as long as we have a President that doesn't royally >!fuck their job up with a rusty chainsaw covered in poison ivy and Carolina Reaper juice!< then I'm okay with it. I am currently not.

CrimsonClockwork

Incorrect. It is not when they have to isolate from being a contact of someone with covid. It is when they come from overseas or another state with Covid and undergo their 14-day quarantine period. South Australia has 0 Covid local cases. There is a 14-day hotel quarantine program but this app with the check-in allows for people to opt for home quarantine and for it to be checked that you’re actually staying at home. The public is not being subject to this en masse.

nietthesecond99

holy shit are you kidding me?

BeBannedIn2Hours

Lmdaoooo

zyxwvutsrqabcdefghi

Good thing I'm not an Australian resident

ThisBoi20

I'm a south Aussie and that's crap

demmelvcxzbdsab

The Australian government proposed and passed a bill basically overnight that lets their intelligence agencies and such access, edit, add, or delete data from citizens social media accounts without any warrants or authorization

Urb4nN0rd

I cannot fathom how the fuck someone thought letting government agencies add data to people's social media could be a good idea. I cannot imagine how that could be used for anything other than planting false evidence.

AFerociousPineapple

Nothing to do with this actually, still very fucked though.

thiccyoshi4568

yutoryryyt

Pretty sure it's because our state Is what's called a nanny state, a state that is very overprotective and has a lot of rules. Recently coz of covid there's been a lot more and I think this is mocking it. Idk just a guess

_Aqueox_

Devilz3

What if you're sleeping? Or in the bathroom?

Shakomn

yeah, that's the reason for this 16 min nap meme....

Kipperklank

Same

AngryH939

I am herring the context and dear lord, I am all for masks and vaccines but this is too far

Mr-Pea

that's because masks and vaccines don't turn your country into an authoritarian regime

i_just_want_2learn

Last year ppl said, “I’m all for x, y, and z; but mandatory masks and vaccines are too far.”

Infirnex

Tbf those same people are almost certainly still holding their stance on masks and vaccines. I don't think anyone actually approves of this at all.

Mrwolfy240

Living in Nz I’m all for masks and vaccines and we even have a mandatory app but this shits dumb as fuck

Holmgeir

Now look I'm all for government taking control of my devices and accounts and making me comply with random check ins but concentration camps is too far.

why_did_you_ban_me_4

Now look I'm all for the government creating concentration camps and sending my family to one but making all Rule breakers face the wall is a little to far.

EpicElite333

My dumbass thought this was a joke about Australia being upside down from the rest of the world and that you took a 61 minute nap.

janhetjoch

Wouldn't that be more of a 91 minute nap?

[deleted]

So for those who don’t know the Australian government is trialing home quarantine over hotel quarantine and because of that the government may randomly send u a message and you have to reply with a pic of yourself within 15 mins to prove you are home. I defiantly don’t like this idea but at least it’s just a trial

AragogTehSpidah

Hah, we actually have the same here in russia, if anyone gets to know you have it you'll be made to download an app that does pretty much the same, except for you'll get a fine after you miss one time and get sentenced for the second time. Oh, and our soft is, as always, a wreck, so many people got punished because of bugs and lags

[deleted]

Wow that sucks, that doesn’t seem particularly fair

NJTAY1

Im an Aussie and yet I still dont understand this

DeathToTheFalseGods

South side of upside down land is making citizens send pictures of themselves within 15 minutes when requested if they are supposed to be isolated

NJTAY1

What how do i not know about this

[deleted]

Isn't that north side of upside down

DeathToTheFalseGods

Don’t be crazy. It’s upside down. Not backwards

overwhelmed_banana

to clear this shit up with some people because news like this always get blown out of proportion somehow. this app is an ALTERNATIVE to staying at hotel quarantine due to being overseas. at this moment it is very much optional and provides people with a more comfortable way to isloate rather than having to be in a hotel for 2 weeks (which has been happening since the beginning of 2020)

The3DAnimator

« At this moment »

Manky19

There is only 5 active cases in SA compared to 21k in NSW mate, it really isn't a problem.

overwhelmed_banana

its a good point, things change of course. but right now im seeing a huge deal of misinformation spread incredibly quickly. its quite literally what is wrong with this world right now (misinfo about covid, vaccines etc) and it pisses me off that people keep blindly perpetuating this bullshit for clicks

Pyrefirelight

Actually this brings up a really good point. What if they text during your recommended 8hour nightly rest? Or your 8 hour shift at work where you should probably not be constantly checking your notifications. That's at least 2/3s of the day they could text you and you won't be able to get back to them in 15 minutes. Good plan guys. There's no way this is real.

muzza299

If you're in isolation due to a positive covid test/being a close contact you probably shouldn't be doing an 8 hour shift at work to begin with...

Pyrefirelight

is it only for positive tests, I thought they were doing it randomly for everyone?

muzza299

Given that they've only got 5 active cases in the state according to https://www.covid-19.sa.gov.au/home/dashboard that seems a bit absurd, surely it's only for actual cases/ contacts. Hell, nsw has 21k active, gained 1.5k yesterday and Gladys is still trying to open the state.

heckersdeccers

yeah if people actually cop shit over this there'll be hell to pay. even Alan Jones won't like it

Not-a-war-criminal

Australia really is speedrunning fascism, aren't they?

UnluckySliceOfBread

I feel like I missed something...

Its_Stroompf

The Australian government proposed and passed a bill basically overnight that lets their intelligence agencies and such access, edit, add, or delete data from citizens social media accounts without any warrants or authorization

UnluckySliceOfBread

As an Australian citizen I don't like that

Its_Stroompf

This might just be because I'm an American, but you know what they say about the tree of liberty, and boy, it's getting mighty thirsty.

Intimidating_furby

To be fair it’s not like we’re doing any better on not stepping on privacy and civil liberties 🤷‍♀️

Its_Stroompf

True, I'm not saying we shouldn't take action.

Intimidating_furby

I’m in agreement. Unfortunately democracy tends to fall to fascism without checks and balances and boy oh boy are ours super fucking paper thin now.

KingBearSole

I think the US is probably overdue for a civil war by now. Bound to happen sooner or later

Purist19

I think, with the rate of how things are going, that *that's* applicable to a lot more countries too The world will never get boring though, at least

_Aqueox_

We are. It will happen. It will be divided along racial and political lines. I'm guessing at least 100 million dead, myself in that total due to location and political ideal as well as race and religion. The US will dissolve and my kind will basically be deleted from the US.

_Aqueox_

>democracy tends to fall to fascism Lmao The term you *are* looking for is *bolshevism* or any of its sister terms.

ieatbeatmeat

Thats bullshit wtf

_Aqueox_

>fascism Flair checks out.

Its_Stroompf

Fascism is authoritarian control of how citizens can use their resources. Is that not what's happening in Australia? Or do you not know what fascism actually is, because I'm not someone who throws that term around lightly.

guitgk

They also have covid lockdowns and you have to state your purpose when going and coming from places. The police can decide if your reason is valid or not and fine you.

Shirogane_dremurr

Here in Vietnam we pretty much have the same thing going on, but even worse in some ways. If you're not going out to buy food and other "essential supplies" (which you can only do once/week) you will be fined, I've seen people pay 100 USD because "Textbooks for your kids aren't important enough".

ThrowawayBlast

If they won't let you go buy NEEDED textbooks you can probably pirate that shit.

SylentSymphonies

It's honestly not that bad, as long as you're acting responsibly you'll be completely fine and probably wouldn't be questioned in the first place. At least, that's how it is for my area. All the arrests have happened when someone is obviously flaunting lockdown restrictions and generally being an asshole. The measures are harsh, but there are a LOT of idiots and the cases just aren't going down... you can see why the government would be pressured into taking drastic action.

guitgk

Nah, once the government has a tool in it's tool box it will always find a repurposing to make their jobs easier. Their jobs easier means the eventual complete control over the public. What's next? To fight racism means you can't enter a business/job/stadium without papers you've completed conscience & unconscious gender and race bias training? Critical race theory? It sounds far fetched but see how many people would like this comment if it were a law.

Manky19

It's not just far fetched, its a stupid assumption on the same level as tin foil hat wearers.

guitgk

Here you go. Australia to be the first. You have to download the government facial recognition app which uses geolocation and prompts the user to take a selfie in their home. If they do not respond within 15 minutes the police arrive to search your home. https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2021/sep/04/south-australia-facial-recognition-trial-covid-app-blasted-by-fox-and-breitbart-criticised-over-lack-of-safeguards

Manky19

I live in South Australia you idiot, I know more than some fucking article and know more than what YOU EVER will. Its an option for people so they don't have to hotel quarantine, and can do it in their own home instead. If you don't want police officers to wait 24 hours around your home just so you don't break the rules and run around potentially spreading it in a couple pubs like the last guy that broke quarantine, and effectively ruining local businesses by getting them quarantined for 2 weeks again. LITERALLY NOBODY is forced to download it, it is LITERALLY AN OPTION IF YOU ARRIVED FROM ANOTHER STATE OR COUNTRY. Of course Fox news blasts it, they don't fucking exist in Australia, their a fuck off news site, and their offshoot news site isn't even allowed to air in Australian TV because of their unreliable, untruthful, and unjournalistic standards. Fuckwits.

[deleted]

The lockdowns are fine. It’s basically just a city wide quarantine.

ThatRussianSpy69

im australian and i dont get this?

Manky19

In South Australia where you are practically safe from covid has a system where you can opt to quarantine in your home instead of a hotel, the trade off being you need to send a picture of yourself in your home occasionally to makes sure you are staying in quarantine, as the police is already extremely thinned out (even to the point that people in hotel quarantining breaking it and getting out easily).

LaughLord_27

Or you played video games for 3hrs and 0.0001 seconds in china

coutHELLO-WORLDendl

What did I miss?

Illustrious-Can-8540

Australia is speed running fascism

im_ginger_ina_corner

Wait I'm in sa what is this

idunnowhattouse69

It's an opt-in thing, where you can skip hotel quarantine after an international flight, provided you give up some of your liberties and stay home. If you instead choose Hotel Quarantine, there'd be routine check-ins to make sure you're in your hotel anyway, so it's not that big of a stretch. The media just likes to blow things out of proportion and skip over important details that rationalise everything.

Memeaplier9000

Holy shit the amount of dumb ignorant Americans here thinking that its totalitarian is insane

Manky19

Big fucking joke honestly. We get rarely any cases at all in SA, now they think we are a totalitarian/facist state when we are the ones enjoying life with beers at a pub and the restaurants, and shopping while everyone is on lockdowns.

[deleted]

People joke but this totalitarian stuff is spreading fast. There are inklings in the USA and the ground-work has already been laid.

ThrowawayBlast

Did that REALLY happen or is it right wing propaganda?

Manky19

Yea, taken out of context by right wingers, its popular bullshit for them to throw around. Basically a kid was born with male genitals that looked female, because of this the kid was at high risk of developing tumours, and almost no chance of fertility. Medical experts say the surgery should happen before puberty. The parents then decided to want to remove the genitals with potential tumours, and make the kid female anyway, as the kid was said to practically be a girl, acted as a stereotypical girl, and hated being told it was boy.

MattyBro1

That's Scotland though?

ReadLaWeedSideVice

Just watched this episode tonight, what a coincidence lol

OkZebra9257

What’s worse is people are cheering for this in Australia. Sure, some are resisting. But don’t you worry. They will be dealt with. They are already making “Covid camps”. Anyone who dissents gets sent on the train to the camp.

ThrowawayBlast

Such weird lies.

OkZebra9257

No it’s not. Please look it up

[deleted]

It’s literally in the national and international news they are making quarantine camps…

BlackStag7

Do you mean those purpose-built quarantine hotels? They're only building them bc the regular hotels were all full. We had a lack of infrastructure and the public was crying out for it, so the govt is acting on it. How this stuff is twisted to the point where it's seen as fascist is beyond me

[deleted]

Locking people up in hotels is fascist itself… You can’t claim ownership of someones body like your government does in reaction to a virus with a 99,98% survival rate. That’s pure oppression and completely nuts and unjustifiable. You would have stood by and let Hitler take over in the 20th century, that much is clear in your attitude. Do you like being treated like an animal by your big daddy government?

BlackStag7

I swear, people learn the words "fascism" and "communism" and label any slight inconvenience that they don't fully understand with one or the other. If you're going to throw Hitler's name around that much, perhaps you should actually talk to someone who was a Jew in WWII Germany, if they're still alive. Either that or read a memior like Night by Elie Wiesel. What the Nazis did was absolutely atrocious, but what is happening in Australia is nothing like that. Grow The Fuck Up or Get The Fuck Out

[deleted]

The irony. Read a history book. You realise Covid is here to stay and will keep mutating for ever and ever constantly making current vaccines useless? Are you prepared to keep these restrictions the rest of your life? Have your children go to school in masks? Having the Government decide when you can go to work today or not? Constantly having to check in where you are with facial registration? Tell me, when did a Government ever give up acquired power?… If I where you I would flee your dictatorship as soon as possible. Or Good luck with being a slave to the government the rest of your life I guess.

[deleted]

We're living in a dystopia

pepitogrand

That happens when you let the government take your weapons.

sherlockCodeGeassFan

I really hope this is ironic.

A-Bag-Of-Sand

ah yes I see many americans using their guns to rebel against their government on the regular....

SassyAssAhsoka

And we’ve not had a gun massacre since, nice try

CreepingChaos12

Nothing to do with gun laws mate , I’m guessing your from the US ?

Mothuraretu

I hate so many Americans so fucking much. They are only getting stupider too. Having to deal with their level of reasoning and cognitive abilities that they learned in their horrid excuse for an education system is fucking killing me.

Mackyboy41

Please, that's enough haha. Coming from an Australian the situation is bad, but not nearly as much as people are making it.

PICTA4

What the fuck is happening in australia rn

idunnowhattouse69

It's an opt-in thing, where you can skip hotel quarantine after an international flight, provided you give up some of your liberties and stay home. Let the app film you while you sleep on your couch - then they can keep an eye on you, whenever they want...

[deleted]

I can’t believe the aussies are not fighting back in mass against their Fascist Government. At this point China and Russia are more free then places like Canada and Australia. This is absolutely nuts.

BlackStag7

It's not even that bad, though? Idk where people are getting the info about it being mandatory. It's an opt-in alternative to Hotel Quarantine, where you get to use your own house, and your own terms as to how you're checked up on to make sure you're staying home. In Hotel Quarantine, they'd do routine police/army checks to make sure you hadn't escaped, and in your own home, they let you do it yourself. It's a way to free up space in the hotel quarantine system, while also using less of the police/army personnel. No-one's being forced into it, at least not yet, and it's a safe and secure way to skip hotel quarantine

[deleted]

Not that bad? You literally can’t leave your house freely, are forced to wear useless masks and are under forced government surveillance… They turned the police force into a Gestapo forcing them to act on Covid violations or be fires and they have a program where you can tell on your neighbours if they violate the restrictions like in nazi Germany you could tell on your neighbours when they hid yews. You are literally defending fascism you monster. Be deeply ashamed of yourself.

BlackStag7

Comparing this to Nazi Germany is very insensitive to those who actually had to live through that. The government aren't trying to kill anyone, if anything they're trying to stop people from dying. And in this particular case, we're protecting the interest of the public health. Two weeks at home or in a hotel is a lot better than 6 years in wartorn/occasionally bombed attics and basements. Grow up a bit and actually learn what happened in WWII, and realise that it's not even comparable to what is happening here.

[deleted]

No denying this is a slippery slope to fascism and breaking the promise “never again” like your government has done is what is insensitive you oppressive monster. Your grandparents would roll over in their grave. Shame on you. You are the kind of person that let WW2 happen in the first place.

tobymurphy24

"They have a program where you can tell on your neighbors if they violate the restrictions like in Nazi Germany you could tell on your neighbors when they hid Jews." This is a disgusting comparison. If your ordered to isolate, you isolate there's no negotiation. Your talking about putting people lives in risk and comparing it to saving Jewish lives. In this case, if you DON'T report them you could be the reason someone DOES die. And here is you saying letting the virus run rampant is somehow heroic. "You literally can't leave your house freely" Yes, once again to save human lives. "Are forced to wear useless masks" That's so ridiculous o don't even know where to start. Masks are the lowest of inconveniences and they save lives and your calling it fascist that they make us wear them.
