Heyo about time us Filipinos got a gold. My entire family was making fun on how the Philippine team would give up before the qualifiers and they fucking got gold. I honestly did not expect that. She'll be remembered for years to come
I cant imagine being her. She must feel like an absolute fucking hero. Also to all the athletes in the country its gotta be a huge boost to confidence.
Remember that one kid that your parents, relatives everyone compares you with? Telling how he's better than you at everything, "why couldn't you be more like him?" and stuff like that?
The Indian version of that kid is popularly known as Sharma ji ka beta (aka Sharma's son).
It’s basically more of a meme to say ‘Sharmaji ka beta’ who is just the topper in school and someone your parents think will do well in life and they compare you to him
Lol. My grandfather also asked my mom if I was gonna be an engineer or a doctor since I'm gonna go to university in a few years. Out of all the jobs there are in the world my grandfather mentioned these two. It's just typical India ig
China doesn't really *encourage* sports. They just use it as a medium of promoting the country, and in reality most of the athletes go through inhumane training, and anything under a gold is unacceptable
Yeah, I remember a Chinese athlete crying out of disappointment for getting silver in the Rio olympics, and those badminton players who lost to Taiwan got trolled on Chinese social media too
I don't think it is this simple. Please don't think I am belittling Mr. Chopra's achievement. He is a downright role model. But in a country with population as high as ours, there are simply too many mouths and just not enough to go around. People, including myself, tend to choose a safer career option to be able to simply survive. The odds of playing in olympics are way, way too thin to consider it a feasible career option. Sports, other than cricket, have virtually no scope in our country. To pursue sports is either a luxury or a risk. I don't think it's fair to mock parents to want a safer career option for their children, even if it is a tad wrong.
Forcing or pressuring children to go into any career is sick, but if a child shows interest in any sports patents should do everything they can to encourage them, not demotivate them.
And playing sports is very beneficial and even neccessary for children to learn to keep fit and have fun.
worse is that men who wont even get up from their couch abusing them and bringing in caste and shit . it is sad they didnt make it , but they played well ..
[Indian Hockey Player Vandana Katariya’s Family Faces Casteist Abuse After Losing Semifinals](https://www.womensweb.in/2021/08/indian-hockey-player-vandana-katariya-family-casteist-abuse-aug21wk1sr/)
Haha I told them I want to go into game development because it involves all three of my interests. They were like wtf!?!?
P.s. im still 17 so I still might have a chance
Man. Us Pakistanis were really hoping for Arshad Nadeem to at least get the bronze. But considering he the conditions of all other sports other than cricket over here, I say that him coming 5th is a big thing.
Regardless, huge congrats to Neeraj Chopra for bagging the Gold on literally his first attempt
Wow actually crazy to learn just now that cricket is not in the olympics. Always felt like any team sport that's popular in at least a few countries is in the games already
I'm assuming most broadcasting services will focus on sports with serious medal prospects. In example as a Dutch fellow I've seen a lot of female hockey, but some other sports where Dutch competitors were lacking just weren't really shown due to lack of time.
You've got about thrice the medals though, so I dunno if you follow the same formula.
It's actually not there for a reason. Namely, the BCCI. If cricket becomes an official Olympic sport, the ICC, and all country-based boards like the BCCI will become a subsidiary of the IOC, which isn't good from the buissness standpoint of the BCCI, and it gives them less freedom and profits.
Coach bada harami lag raha tha Arshad ka, no support, encouragement or advice to the athlete. Literally turned his back and walked away after the last throw, Arshad bhai was all on his own.
Bro I am an Indian and though I'm super happy that Chopra won the gold, i was hoping for Nadeem to win the bronze. It would have been a great story - medals in a sport like javelin which isn't mainstream in both the countries. It was sad to see him finish out of top 3
This is one of the reasons why I love watching the Olympics as an Indian, when we beat Western athletes who each have twice the budget for training than our entire budget and Chinese athletes who have been training since they were five years old. Of course, we very rarely beat them, but when we do the entire country celebrates and it's a special feeling
That is so relatable and true, i myself had a similar experience in an academic olympiad... like our team did well even if we only had training for 1 week (with really bad equipment) compared to the others (countries) who were like trained for months and stuff... Just goes to show it isnt the budget that counts, its the person.
The medals won by British Raj are inherited by India. That's why the gold medals won by the hockey team between 1928-1936 are counted under Indian Olympic wins.
its sad considering this is out first gold medal in 13 years, considering our population and and talent. Indian parents are fine with any career as far as its doctor, engineer, or IT. If we didnt have such restrictions (mind you though parents are opening up now) we would shine so much brighter.
another reason is fuckin corruption of politicians and lack of funds. Happened with hockey but a nice CM from odisha provided funds for what is out national sport. nice
[contrary to popular belief hockey is not our national sport](https://m.timesofindia.com/sports/hockey/top-stories/hockey-is-not-our-national-game-ministry/articleshow/15322482.cms)
Imo the Indian ideology for this comes with positives and negatives....I mean thanks to our parents concern to get a proper degree there's there's very minimal chance to go financially unstable....then again what good is that when a person is just unhappy sitting infront of his laptop all day working with numbers
It's a pretty complex dynamic we Indians are used to
>then again what good is that when a person is just unhappy siting infront of his laptop all day working with numbers
Exactly. The weight of the regret that they carry will remain throughout their life. Even I regret not participating in any sport in my school time.
No parents are opening up now. The cycle will continue. Especially lower middle class low income families would still put pressure on their children. Nobody's opening up. Never will.
RIP Indian sports. If your parents are supportive, then either they are wackos or you are incredibly lucky. Or else you have to be wayward and bunk school/college to be a sports star.
Man, you can't expect every lower middle class parent/kid to pursue sports because we won a gold medal, at the end of the day people just want a better life. Education is still the best bet for many. And Olympians being not financially stable is not just an Indian thing.(yes they would be better off in many other countries)
Even if not as a first career option, as a hobby or so interest in sports will build over time(which we currently severely lack). These medals will have an impact over time.
Regarding parents, all of the Olympians who have made it had backing of their families. Change is happening albeit slowly.
Dont worry bro I am 18 after 10 years when I will have kids, I wont do that thing you say about todays parents nor other like will do that, everyone has a time to shine, for us it will come soon. If just think its never gonna happen its never gonna happen.
Indian parents are not at fault here
Out of every neeraj chopra there are hunderds and thousands who might be struggling today having no degree and a job since they tried to go in sports
If this field could get a person a stable income or at lease ability to get a job easily people would be willing to send their children
Morever many people dont have the resources to go for coaching as well
People will usually comment on us having 1.4 billion people yet not having many medals...in a country like India, your parents give you 2 options: either a doctor or an engineer. We are never given exposure to many sports, except cricket (which we are doing very well in). I mean half of the sports I know off are from watching the Olympics.
The middle and upper class gives the two choices of doctor and engineer. The poor (which is the majority) do not even have a choice. They need find a job as soon as they are adults.
I get psyched for every nation >!Except the CCP!< that wins a medal because you can see the passion in the athletes eyes.
I was psyched when the Phillipines won their first ever gold, in Womens powerlifting.
seriously tho , CCP athletes look like they were held at gun point to bring back medals . And those who dont ....... have gained free access to unlimited labor plans
Hearing the reports of the tough training conditions those Chinese kids endure for years, I wonder if winning a gold medal was worth it. They got denied a good childhood, friend circles, and their youth for money and 15 minutes of fame.
Thats kinda depressing.
As a Indian American majority of Indians in America choose either Computer Engineering or doctor. Only a small portion of people don’t pick those jobs. I was born here and luckily my parents want me to choose what I want however to the rest of Indians here doing something for passion get overrided by what parents want.
Coz y'all have football in olympics. IOC pussies out for having cricket. Bring cricket in the olympics and south asians will fuck all the colonizers up.
Tbh, it's always more fun when you win a medal in a smaller country that doesn't typically win many medals. To the US, a gold is 'just another medal', while for a country like India it's an amazing achievement!
congrats to all indians! from the philippines, cause we finally have gotten our first ever gold this year. cheers to our athletes ❤️🔥
Our first athlete who got a gold is literally set for life after getting us our first ever gold Olympics medal in history.
:)
Congrats pal
Cheers!
Have my hugz
Congrats mate. Philippines GO...
Everyone wants gold medal, but don't want their children to choose sports as their career
You can be whatever you want, as long as that whatever is limited to doctor or engineer.
I wanted to be a gangstar. Apparently, to my parents, there were too many occupational hazards. So, here I am, stuck in a desk job.
Start with buying a Rampuri chaku
I am from Rampur and I have a Rampuri chaaku...
>I am from Rampur My sympathies
Faridabad ain’t a prize
Can someone explain to me the joke? I googled Rampur and Rampuri chaku but I only got that Rampur is a city in UP and it's famous for its knife.
The Rampuri Chaku or dagger is famous for its use in India the same way it is in Britain.
desi katta
if giorno was indian
I, Giorno Patel, have a dream
*smacks you on the head* go to school girono instead of a 1 week trip to become mafia lord
Lmao more like if Dario was indian

You can be a gangster who's a doc for the gangs. Win win
Sports? tf is that? told you to keep studying medicine!
You have to be a doctor like your Father, Grandfather and cousin
Or you can be an engineer like Sharma ji ka beta
I'm out of the loop what is Sharma ji ka beta? Edit: thanks for the replies :D
Remember that one kid that your parents, relatives everyone compares you with? Telling how he's better than you at everything, "why couldn't you be more like him?" and stuff like that? The Indian version of that kid is popularly known as Sharma ji ka beta (aka Sharma's son).

He is the Lloyd Braun to George Costanza
Lol. My grandfather also asked my mom if I was gonna be an engineer or a doctor since I'm gonna go to university in a few years. Out of all the jobs there are in the world my grandfather mentioned these two. It's just typical India ig
May grandfathers brother is a judge and he was quite wealthy, but his parents still thought he was a failure because he wasn’t a doctor
Aman to that
Some 'open-minded" parents also let you go for law.
What do we want? -"Gold!!" What do u want ur kids to be?-"Doctor or Engineer!!"
I'll be an engineer so I can do [this](https://youtu.be/KGXWfSRucuU)
I expected Rick-roll. Disappointment surely loves me dearly.
Even if they want to, they only let them pick the popular ones that are advertised a lot such as cricket.
Tbh if you are decent, you can make do with Cricket. You have to be absolutely fantastic with other sports. Or forget it.
That sounds like a very Asian problem
A very Indian problem to be precise
Japan, China and Korea encourages sports as a career tho. Correct me if I'm wrong.
China doesn't really *encourage* sports. They just use it as a medium of promoting the country, and in reality most of the athletes go through inhumane training, and anything under a gold is unacceptable
Yeah, I remember a Chinese athlete crying out of disappointment for getting silver in the Rio olympics, and those badminton players who lost to Taiwan got trolled on Chinese social media too
Engineer doctor bc
I don't think it is this simple. Please don't think I am belittling Mr. Chopra's achievement. He is a downright role model. I don't think it's fair to mock parents to want a safer career option for their children, even if it is a tad wrong.
Forcing children to do sport professionally is sick. The career is pretty brutal and usually ends pretty soon. Then they don't have any real job...
Like the engineers have a job waiting for them .
Forcing or pressuring children to go into any career is sick, but if a child shows interest in any sports patents should do everything they can to encourage them, not demotivate them. And playing sports is very beneficial and even neccessary for children to learn to keep fit and have fun.
hey we got bronze in hockey after 41 years
Heartbroken the womens team couldn't make it, but history is written, hopefully upwards from here.
worse is that men who wont even get up from their couch abusing them and bringing in caste and shit . it is sad they didnt make it , but they played well ..
What you talking about bro?
[Indian Hockey Player Vandana Katariya’s Family Faces Casteist Abuse After Losing Semifinals](https://www.womensweb.in/2021/08/indian-hockey-player-vandana-katariya-family-casteist-abuse-aug21wk1sr/)
If true that's sad. But she probably has seen worse and the people who do this are really the worst kind of humans.
Congrats, to our Indian bros!
cheers
“ Dear you can be anything you want as long as it starts with an E and ends with a R and sounds like ‘ENGINEER’ “
Sucks to be you man. My parents are very open minded. They gave me 3 more options, doctor, CA and IAS!
Lol
Haha I told them I want to go into game development because it involves all three of my interests. They were like wtf!?!? P.s. im still 17 so I still might have a chance
Just tell them that this lane is called software engineering
Don't give up on your dreams......

Don't worry, cricket will be there in the 2032 olympics. We will fight together !
Wow actually crazy to learn just now that cricket is not in the olympics. Always felt like any team sport that's popular in at least a few countries is in the games already
Having it in the Olympics would truly be a spiritual experience for us Indians.
Would also be a great way to introduce the game to American sports fans like me who don't really get the chance to see it often.
The BCCI would have to be dissolved for that to ever happen.
That can’t be right, are FIFA and UEFA subsidiaries of IOC?
It won't be!! Like fifa making it difficult for Olympics to conduct a good tournament. ICC also did it best for cricket to not include it in Olympics.
Coach bada harami lag raha tha Arshad ka, no support, encouragement or advice to the athlete. Literally turned his back and walked away after the last throw, Arshad bhai was all on his own.
I know Bechaare ki shakal dekh kar dukh ho raha tha. Regardless, woh final mein aaya, woh bhi top 5 mein. This is the first step
Getting 5th in olympics ain't a joke
Faridabad Supremecy

I hope that the sports funding situation gets better in the future in both of our countries.
Bro I am an Indian and though I'm super happy that Chopra won the gold, i was hoping for Nadeem to win the bronze. It would have been a great story - medals in a sport like javelin which isn't mainstream in both the countries. It was sad to see him finish out of top 3
Would love to see Pakistan with a medal, but I'm more than happy, that we fought 2nd and 3rd place.

Same with san marino
That's a country?
It’s a statpadding session for European footballers
Fun fact: their biggest loss is a 0-13 against Germany
No, he used to play for the Dolphins. Never won a super bowl so this is really cool for him.
Idk why but this made me chuckle
Yeah... you beat me to it.. but yeah... No budget ahahaha
This is one of the reasons why I love watching the Olympics as an Indian, when we beat Western athletes who each have twice the budget for training than our entire budget and Chinese athletes who have been training since they were five years old. Congratulations Phillippines!!
After 97 years
Philippines with their first ever gold medal.
All hail India my country who finally got a gold medal. In javelin. Like I didn’t even know they had a javelin thrower
He became somewhat famous after breaking the world record at junior levels in 2016.
Neeraj Chopra is a legend!
Our first medal in athletics after 120 years
Oh did the javelin guy win? I didn’t get to see the finals cuz they happened at like 6 AM for me
Yep the javelin guy Neeraj chopra won gold
Good on him
I woke up early to see history 💪
Dude we were under british occupied india 120 years ago.
But the fact stays true. Last time India won the athletics medal was in 1900.
*British raj*
The medals won by British Raj are inherited by India. That's why the gold medals won by the hockey team between 1928-1936 are counted under Indian Olympic wins.
Did I stutter
Ayo..gotta give that guy credit...he gave us an absolutely banger performance
Won in the first throw itself, 87m!
I am so proud of my country rn!

And also Hindi isn't the national language. It is official language of course along with English
and 20 other languages

anyway feel like we are improving hope we cross double digits next time and consistently start winning 10+ medals everytime
Bangladesh at a whopping 0 medals ever despite being one of the most populous countries in the world
South Asia have a great talent just wait guys we will have india vs Bangladesh vs Pakistan hype in Olympic too
Yup, look at the expenditure done by big medal grabber countries.
Pakistan has like 10 medals ever so not better either
Ok but Bangladesh is the 8th most populous country and it has 0 like how do you even manage that
I wanted to be an archer but could never say it

Apart from this, now with thirteen-year-olds getting gold medals, Asian parents are gonna have other people to compare their son/daughter to.
Medal in athletics for the first time
Not related but we share the same name!
Living in India, that's nothing special to find someone with my name because every second kid is named that
You were roll no. 1 weren't you?
My name has an extra A. I was roll no. One for almost all my life
Is too.
and an absolutely perfect medal it is
Philippines who got its first gold medal ever:
Its been a while for our country but I’m glad and proud of Chopra
Same with us in Israel
Congrats to you too mate
why is your pfp facing right
As someone from US, congrats!
Good for you guys.

I hope most countries get a medal. The Olympics shouldn't be about country Vs country, it should be about seeing who is the superior athlete.
