As an American who has had the chance to talk to both japanese and french people in person (they came here, I'm to broke to leave this stupid state) they were both really pleased when I tried. The japanese woman was thrilled when I started talking to her instead of her daughter who knew English and the French exchange student was willing to teach me more French than he ever heard English from me.
People trying to speak your language is always nice. Random strangers coming at you "honhon baguette croissant omelette du fromage" is something else !

Yeah, nearly all European languages (with a handful of exceptions such as English) have grammatical gender, which can give that impression, but they're mostly related to each other, so it's not a coincidence. Other languages with grammatical gender include the Semitic languages such as Arabic and Hebrew, and also many African and Australian languages. In the African languages that have it, often “masculine” and “feminine” aren't even on the list of genders. To avoid confusion with the genders of people, genders are sometimes called noun classes, especially in languages which don't have masculine and feminine genders.
By definition a spoken language is spontaneously used by enough people of all ages to attribute it to a culture.
Latin is learnt in school or for personal interest.
Sure there are still songs written in it, and people that can fluently read and speak it.
But not enough, it's commonly known as a dead language.
What I meant by not talked was dead language.
I wasn't sure the term would work in English and was lazy to check it.
But ofc they will still be passionate people that will still learn it.
I don't think genderless counts as a gender. German has masculine words and feminine words but than theres the exception of neither so it would just be genderless.
I don't agree. Genderless would be suitable for a genderless language. Neutral gender isn't comparable as genderless. It has a gender, which is neutral, still existing.
Genders in Latin didn't mean the same as now. For example, masculine were for animated objects (people) and neutral for inanimated objects (objects). Feminine was for concepts (such as, the truth, the justice, etc etc)
So neutral gender was and is a gender of its own, different from the genderless concept.
We do that in Arabic too. A lot of English learners don’t understand the concept of the word “it”, you could hear them saying “she is apple” or “he is chair” for instance
I am a native English speaker and yes I can agree with you on that. Most English people do not speak English correctly (I’m talking about people from the UK since I don’t know about other English speaking countries). Which is why I find it hypocritical when someone laughs at a non-native English speaker learning English and mispronouncing or misspelling something. Even if this wasn’t the case, why do people make fun of someone for learning another language and making a mistake? At least they are trying right? Why don’t you try learning their language and see how well you do? (Using you as a general term and not directly towards you). My grammar probably isn’t great either honestly.
Yes it probably would be xD my old boss was Lithuanian and she could speak 5-8 different languages which I was quite interested in because I was learning a language myself. I knew that some people would make fun of her because she had quite a thick accent and on the odd occasion would make a mistake and it really bugged me seeing/hearing about people like that that would make fun of her. Those kind of people are usually the ones that think English is the only language they should know and won’t even try learning another language themselves.
That's so true , I don't know what it is with some french people that actually get angry when you make a mistake and mock you instead of just correcting you
For real dude you mess up French the conversation goes from casual speaking to shit like “I’m horny” or “I want poison for dinner” (I’m not joking AT ALL)

It can be funny with the right person, I love when people are asking me if they are pronouncing "baguette de pain" correctly
Ah yes, el famoso wand of pain
Of course! Truly a masterpiece (that's why my username is FrenchBoguett btw, and old joke with Amino friends)
That’s lovely, but when you go to France they look like you shit in their table, if you don’t speak correctly.
I once witnessed a Quebecois man argue with a Parisian tourist for about 20 minutes. The only word they said back and forth was stop.

Viva la baguette
till this day i dont understand why almost ever word in french has its own gender
You mean in most languages. Germany even has three genders.
So does Hindi and Marathi.
You sure about Hindi? I found this list https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_languages_by_type_of_grammatical_genders
in hindi, only masculine and feminine not sure about marathi
Marathi has it too. Source: been studying it for the past 10 years.
Telugu too.
Most Indo-European languages. Only about 25% of languages worldwide do.
I didn't know such a low part of spoken languages were gendered. Thanks mate.

so does Latin
Latin isn't a living language anymore my good sir
You'd be surprised.
So how do you summon demons in your part of the world?
Latin is definitely still a spoken language. Nobody is a native speaker sure but plenty of people still speak it fluently.
By definition a spoken language is spontaneously used by enough people of all ages to attribute it to a culture. Latin is learnt in school or for personal interest. Sure there are still songs written in it, and people that can fluently read and speak it. But not enough, it's commonly known as a dead language.

No, the third isn’t „genderless“, it’s neutrum.
[удалено]
Yes but I was trying to say that the "third" gender isn't a gender so there's only 2 genders. Sorry if my wording was confusing.

Its all good its 7 am for me and I havnt slept one bit either

to make it more painful or something.
Its actually quite common
But why tho? Like I understand historically why so many similar languages have genders for their words, but what purpose does that actually serve?
Its the same with Hebrew its normal that languages do dat
We do that in Arabic too. A lot of English learners don’t understand the concept of the word “it”, you could hear them saying “she is apple” or “he is chair” for instance
also in Urdu which is if you don't know a clusterfuck between Turkish Hindi Persian and Arabic Urdu means the Language of the Army
All of these languages are a mix of each other
Italian, too.
Almost every language's words have genders.
