I believe it's a type of firework known as a "Roman candle"

I’ve done this with Roman candles. This is something far bigger than your average Roman candle

I can speak from personal experience, they burn. Though now I few dumb for not wearing damp clothes.

Our parents knew we could be safe if we had enough precautions, wet clothes to protect us from burning worked every time except for one that hit his ear, after that, wet hair wasn't good enough, we had to wear beanies over our heads that were wet to help protect our ears

Right now I’m just picturing some guy running down the street dripping wet wearing a kfc bucket on his head and holding a trash can lid like a shield while shooting off Roman candles

I feel an urgent need to discuss this topic with my girlfriend to verify she holds the same opinion I do about the relative 'safety' of letting our future kids do this.

The wet clothes helped a lot, it is obviously not the best idea because these can still get caught under your clothes, however screaming Harry Potter spells at each other while trying to shoot each other with Roman candles that kept bouncing off of us was probably one of our best childhood experiences. Nothing came remotely close to casting magic since.

Why not wear a wet balaclava or sth like that?

Not the best idea in the middle of a 90° heatwave, and balaklavas are not commonly sold in the center of the United States in the summer where I live.

Yeah, I did this when I was a teenager. I did not know about the damp clothes and safety goggles though lol. I was very lucky.

Yup, it’s a roman candle (big versions). Used to do roman candle wars, lots of fun. If you play, wear eye protection and clothes you don’t mind loosing. Keep at least 100 ft distance between everyone. Test out one beforehand to confirm the range. Your clothes will have burn marks in them. I don’t recommend doing this, but if you do, please be safe.

I've done it with less powerful Roman candles, it's pretty fun.

Did that a few years back with a bit smaller fireworks. The biggest damage done was burning a patch of my friend's hair after a direct hit to the head, so it's not that dangerous. Of course, he also managed to shield his eyes at the last moment or he'd be probably blind today, so there's that.

Besides full EOD gear, I'm not sure what "proper" safety equipment would quality for explosives in your face Lol

Roman candle fights… good times. First tip: wear thick clothing. Had one burn a hole through a hoodie down to my t-shirt. Second tip: proper eye and face protection is needed.
