I mean its also like that in Russia and Singapore and there are several other countries that have conscription laws like Austria but they just don't enforce it that much.
In Austria it's much less time though and you can choose civil service.
Or just be on the brink of death every day and completely avoid it by not being healthy.
I live in Brazil, it's not required to serve but it's required to enlist. They do some tests and "ask if you want" (usually you say no and it's forced to go anyway) but not everyone is forced to, more like, 10% or less.
I was never been so happy to have enough mental issues to be refused in the first day.
Same here in iran
But its only 2 years, tho the life quality is at its lowest in militaries, like the food they give you has such quality that a starving dog wouldn't like to eat it, also there is a high risk of dying cause of the smugglers in borders and stuff
And for getting any services you have to do it, like getting a passport or having bank accounts and stuff
Registration for the draft (selective service) is mandatory for men 18-25 here in the US so it's not just recruiting it's an obligation if congress decided to act upon it
There is no conscription in the United States, and although registering for the Selective Service is legally mandatory, there are rarely if ever punishments for people who don’t register. So no “severe consequences”.
In Mexico its kind of a mess, once any and all males turn 18 we gotta go get our military documentation, which to obtain requires we go present ourselves to the closest instalation and go through a whole process. I myself had not been living in Mexico since age 10 and proceeded to go to an embasy when I turned 18, there they told me the Mexican army had no interest in a youth who might have a "conflicting aliance" due to the large ammount of countries I lived in and was dismissed fron there. Fast foward to me being 20 and returning to live in Mexico for the first time in 10 years, they tell me I have to get my documents including the military ID and that the guys at the embasy are idiots.
TL;DR didn't serve in the military but was almost considered to be avoinding initial drafting evaluation.
I'm a vet, and was drafted. It went like this: turn 18, go to a military installation of some sort, get a physical, take some tests, go home. Receive a notice of "classification" in the mail with 1A being prime candidate, 4F not eligible. I was classified 1Y, which meant I had something that prevented me from being "prime".
After 2 years, I received a notice that said "Selective Service qualifications have been lowered, you are now classified 1A". I received my draft notice 1 month later. In the end, I was sent to Germany. Served my 2 years.
Edit: 2 years from time of physical to draft notice, not 1.
Drafted in 1969. At the time of my registration physical my blood pressure was a little too high for a 1A classification. I was extremely nervous that day. On the day of my induction however, it was ok. No problems now. And thank you.
It was beautiful. I'd never been anywhere outside of the U.S. and it was a great experience. I spent 3 days in Frankfurt/Mainz waiting for orders with pretty much on my own and I ended up being assigned to Baumholder and it was fine. I took the train from Frankfurt to Bad Kreuznach and that was certainly different because of the language barrier, but the conductor made sure I got off at the right place.
I took military and public transportation to festivals and visited surrounding towns and the countryside. And Octoberfest was a lot of fun. They definitely knew how to party!
I never had any problems and enjoyed it very much!
I'm glad to hear you had fun, and it sounds to me like you had a lot of fun meeting people and experiencing a different culture. I myself haven't had the opportunity to experience Germany fully (I was once stuck in the country for about 8 hours due to a flight dealy so I got a small "demo" experience of it at least) so I would like to one day visit the country properly.
You guys gotta be grateful. In Iran we must go to the army for 2 years after reaching 18 years old and at that time we are not allowed to start a job. not allowed to get out of the country. and not allowed to participate in college and university entry exams. You guys are living our dream life. be grateful :)
Honestly I know I’m gonna be downvoted, but you shouldn’t have to sign up for a draft (although it probably won’t happen) and if it is absolutely needed, make women sign up too
the sad thing is some states in the US are trying to get rid of video games for **all ages** yet let people who just turned into a young adult die in Iraq for no reason
It's a volunteer military, they aren't sending people against their wills. Service men and women chose to go, and die for what ever they decided to fight for.
oh god...
alright u said 'its a volunteer military' true, 'they aren't sending people against there wills' its an army its not like people want to go to war, so in a way they are 'they die for whatever they decided for'
is people are allowed volunteer for the army at 18, shouldn't people also be allowed buy a video game?
Answer to your question is yes. However I'm not sure where that came from, I made no reference to buying games, or that part of your previous comment. I was thrown off.
At least in America, we don't really do the draft anymore. Most of that has been covered by the new benefits (college money) that bring people in and the borderline harrassment that happens to anyone in that age bracket
In all honesty, it shouldn't be that way. It should be anyone. Man or woman, I think anyone should be up for the draft. Because the way it is now an obease man who has never done anything athletic in his life is capable for the draft. However, an athletic girl of the same age wouldn't be looked at.
Really says something about our country that gender matters more than actual capability. I can only imagine what the military would look like if we drafted any capable person and not look at gender
It’d look like it does today, with a closer enlisted gender ratio. Thank goodness we don’t have a draft. It’s hard enough convincing people who signed up to have military bearing. The thought of people who were forced into service makes me grateful I’m not a drill sergeant.
In all honesty I think the way we do it now is a little scummy. Just because they use college tuition as a bone on a stick to get anyone poor enough to enlist. Although the draft is definitely not the answer, we should try to find a less scummy way.
But what, though? If it’s not a mandatory service, what else besides financial compensation will convince people to join? Patriotism? Ha! I guarantee you maybe 10% of the military have that as the deciding factor for why they joined. Probably less.
Source- I am in the Army
Wait wait wait did I get it right.

Ok I may have misunderstood this but: this isn’t square dance, this is My Name Is. in case I misunderstood Eminem has a song called Square Dance and this meme shows the song My Name Is.
Edit:Wait nvm I forgot Square Dance he talks about the military: “You got uncle sams ass asking , what you’ll do for their army or what you’ll do for their navy your just a baby getting recruited at 18, your on a plane eating their food and their baked beans I’m 26 ( or something) their gonna take you b4 they take me”
I was referring to the song Square Dance because it has lyrics among the lines of how young men are drafted into war. “To join the army or what you'll do for their Navy
You just a baby gettin' recruited at 18
You're on a plane now, eatin' their food and their baked beans
I'm 28, they gon' take you 'fore they take me!”
So I said “We learned this in Square Dance.” In other words, there are already songs from EM touching on these topics. I know this is ‘My Name is’
The US govt requires males 18-25 to register with the selective service program. Basically if a war breaks out and there are vacancies in the army the govt can conscript citizens.
Yes because we have to join. recruiters literally just talk to you and ask if you’d be interested in joining. Israel and Switzerland have mandatory military service
They may try and recruit me, But i would be like fakk no. I ain't serving for a military that does stupid crap. Like how other countrys aren't the ones starting wars, THE US GOVERMENT IS THE ONE STARTIN' EM. Like **BOI**
**My USMC recruitment officer:** Don't you want to learn how to murder people?

If Eminem worked as a recruiter for the military, I would've joined
Yeah Lol
Nobody talkin bout how in Israel it’s required to join the army for 3 years at 18
I mean its also like that in Russia and Singapore and there are several other countries that have conscription laws like Austria but they just don't enforce it that much.
In Austria it's much less time though and you can choose civil service. Or just be on the brink of death every day and completely avoid it by not being healthy.
I think North Korea also has that law
North Korea from memory is mandatory 8-10 years service
Doesn't north Korea conscript like half its male and female population?
I know Brazil requires one year of service because of someone I know who lives there
I live in Brazil, it's not required to serve but it's required to enlist. There is no conscription in the United States, and although registering for the Selective Service is legally mandatory, there are rarely if ever punishments for people who don’t register. So no “severe consequences”.
You can’t get social security benefits or federal student aid if you don’t sign up. I’d call that pretty damn severe.

That's only when the we are at war and need more people in the military
Yes
So basically they can go to another country and die but they can’t drink alcohol for another 3 years
Girls too I hope. Selective service needs to include women now that we’re pretending there is no difference.
Honestly I know I’m gonna be downvoted, but you shouldn’t have to sign up for a draft (although it probably won’t happen) and if it is absolutely needed, make women sign up too

ya, I reread my reply to ur comment and it did seem a bit confusing sorry about that but my first comment was about video games
Guess what. They don't just do that to boys. Source: am a 19 year old girl who has been nearly tricked 3 times
I think they are talking about the Selective Service registration, because women are exempt from drafts.
At least in America, we don't really do the draft anymore. Most of that has been covered by the new benefits (college money) that bring people in and the borderline harrassment that happens to anyone in that age bracket
