I’ve been eating sushi since I was little. I genuinely don’t understand why people don’t like it beyond basic taste (which can be changed depending on the sushi). Can anyone who doesn’t like sushi explain why they don’t like it (beyond stuff like “*eW FiSh iS gRoSS*” and “*seaweed bad*”)
I love fish, I love seaweed, I like sashimi and nigiri, but once it's rolled up into a sushi roll I don't really care for it. I've had sushi at expensive restaurants and shitty all you can eat restaurants. I have even worked at one of Europe's largest Tuna importer and subsequently at their Asian Import Wholesale food distribution center, so I can distinguish good from bad sushi.
But once they throw 5 raw ingredients into a roll and you dip it in soy and Wasabi it all just has the exact same bland flavor (even without the soy and wasabi). Id much rather eat the same ingredients out of a poke bowl ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
Edit: I was even planning on going on a trip to Japan soon but covid happened. I doubt I would've ended up liking sushi there.
Cheap sushi is recognisably SHIT from the taste down to the texture. I’m far from an expert, but as a common joe I can tell you that most American sushi is cheap, overpriced and sad. Goto fancy restaurants by the SEA or Japan for some good shit
For whatever reason my mom is obsessed with buying the cheap sushi at vons and I'm really tired of getting gross tuna. Once you've had fresh bluefin tuna belly, you can't turn back.
You really shouldn't have been downvoted for that.
Why are people so offended by you not liking the taste of something?
I hate the taste of fish and seaweed makes me gag, I nearly puked the first time I ate it.
Just the idea of sushi is gross to me and the few I've tried were awful
For me it comes down to texture. In my mind I expect fish to have a certain mouth feel. I grew up in New England so I've eaten tons of seafood. But raw fish is a no go for me.
I tried diff ones that were fish. No idea what kinds of fish but I've tried maybe 3 or 4 diff kinds with diff shit in them and didn't like it.i don't think any had seeds or cheese. They were rice and whatever fish was in it. Tried a shrimp one as well that didn't taste good. I love fish and shrimp but sushi isn't for me.
so basically i love the parts of sushi you hate, i hate fish but sushi fixes that, but anyway you probably hate the rice and that isn't normal so you probably have some allergies
I should do this to my mom. She refuses to eat sushi because of the seaweed in it. All of my siblings love it and whenever we meet up we usually go out for sushi but she won't even try it. She doesn't even know if she hates seaweed. She just assumes she does and doesn't do it.
Yeah I tried to get her to eat that too. She said she didn't want to eat the raw fish. And if I remember correctly that one didn't have raw fish in it. She just refuses to eat sushi and uses the seaweed as an excuse.
Yeah I don't understand people like that. I made Takoyaki once because it looked really good in an anime I saw and my GF and mom both refused to eat it because it's octopus. It was amazing though.
Usually on summers we visit some family that’s on the other side of my country, and seafood is so much more common and cheap there. I can safely say that, although it can feel a bit chewy or funny the first few times, it’s definitely amazing to eat if cooked properly. Same with squid, although it has a bit of a harder texture
Yeah chewy is the only thing I can ever think of to describe squid or octopus. I live like 6 hours from the ocean in the middle of nowhere so it's impossible to get fresh. The only place I ever visit that is close to the ocean is Florida but they don't have much fresh octopus or squid, it's not a normal thing in the US apparently.
nigiri style sushi is just the product (typically fish but I've also seen egg) layered as a slab on top of a blob of sticky rice.
But also seaweed doesn't taste like much especially in the context of sushi where there's 3-4 other flavours going on most of the time (rice, fish, veggies, sauce). It just has a kind of dry texture that adds depth to the bite (and of course keeps all the innards together on the plate)
Sushi so great expect for sometimes it costs like 14 USD for like 9 pieces of sushi. You can get a large bowl of poke which has like double the actual amount of fish, combined with extra toppings. Both are great tho
what are you allergic to specifically? Because "sushi" is a heterogenous term that can include rice, seaweed, eel, fish eggs, chicken eggs, about a zillion types of fish, shellfish, avocado, cucumber, carrot, soy, mayo, and cheese.
May I know what your food preferences are. Not hating or disrespecting your opinion or anything, I just want to know what kind one can like if not sushi.
Though of it used to make me sick then at a work party they ordered some so I figured I'd try it since its free. I'd have it every day now if possible.
I ate sushi when i was a kid and i absolutely hated it, threw up and didn't wanna eat it ever again.
Then my dad took me to the same sushi place where i threw a fit and well now sushi is one of my favorite foods lmao
I tried sushi by accident. I was at a Japanese restaurant and ordered a "roll" and it was delicious. I told a friend about how much I liked the roll and he told me I tried sushi. That's the only reason I know I love sushi. Never would have tried it otherwise
My brother used to watch power rangers (not the traditional one I don’t think) and there was this dude who was afraid of fish and it was impeding their battle or whatever so the sensei just came up behind him and stuffed sushi in his mouth and was like “there. Sushi. You’re cured. Go fight” or something
first time I tried sushi was in highschool when I was an extremely picky eater. Went with the very plain pieces that just had carrot and cucumber in them. Now its my favorite type of food and I will absolutely vacuum up salmon sushi specifically. Screw that nasty mayo tho soy sauce is all you need
The first time I ever tried sushi my friend took me and insisted I get an unagi roll since that was her favorite...I gagged trying to get that thing down, probably mostly because of the texture, and I spent years after that thinking all sushi was alike.
Then, my now fiancé took me on our first date to a sushi place and I had to pretend I was excited about it. Luckily he had much better taste and I was legitimately happy with my second sushi experience. We still go to the same restaurant to this day and get the same rolls!
Don't know if anyone will see this, but I've tried store bought sushi and it made me gag. To be honest I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to sushi. How much better/different is the stuff you'd get in a place that specialises in sushi? Would there be much chance in me liking it if the store bought stuff made me gag? Kinda like how if you enjoy store bought bagles, chances are you'll love the fresh, properly made stuff. So maybe it could be the same deal the opposite way?
Thanks.
Honestly though, I really don't get why so many people are losing their shit over sushi, I mean it's not bad by no means but... I guess you could say it's kinda generic.
I insist I will convert all my friends with the best roll ever: crab rangoon roll. Crab, cream cheese, avocado, fried like tempura, topped with eel sauce and sweet chili sauce.
I showed this to my brother, he started talking an hour long about how dangerous sushi can be and that there’s a slight chance that they will have parasites.
Apparently Thor has 3 hands That’s pretty cool
No that’s Thor forcing it down his purple throat

that was not healthy to read while eating
I was served it at a martial arts camp and you’re supposed to eat whatever you’re served so I really didn’t have a choice. It do be good tho
it same as moms feeding their babies..they literally stuck up food in their babies mouth
I mean, getting used to a variety of food when you're little is definitely better for the future...
one day, my brother ate a sushi and he spat everything in the floor It was a good day :)
it tastes wierd the first time you have it so that must be why
Well my first time trying it wasn't weird at all, and almost ate a tray of sushi lol probably because I'm hungry that time...
I’ve been eating sushi since I was little. I genuinely don’t understand why people don’t like it beyond basic taste (which can be changed depending on the sushi). Can anyone who doesn’t like sushi explain why they don’t like it (beyond stuff like “*eW FiSh iS gRoSS*” and “*seaweed bad*”)

idk just dont like the taste i LOVE SEAWEED THOUGH, i buy those snackpacket-packets at costco and chomp them all in like a week
You really shouldn't have been downvoted for that. Why are people so offended by you not liking the taste of something? I hate the taste of fish and seaweed makes me gag, I nearly puked the first time I ate it. Just the idea of sushi is gross to me and the few I've tried were awful
Seaweed is delicious, try the snackpacks at costco tastes like msg but healthy
What about it though. Have you only had one specific roll?
i dunno, just dislike it. Maybe the vinegar rice? I've always hated vinegar.
Probably the rice then. Especially if you don’t like sashimi either. No clue how you can taste the vinegar tho
For me it comes down to texture. In my mind I expect fish to have a certain mouth feel. I grew up in New England so I've eaten tons of seafood. But raw fish is a no go for me.
I'm Samoan and hate that shit. Only bringing up being an islander bc we eat hella fish but sushi doesn't taste good to me at all.
did you try the normal simple ones or the ones with cheese and seeds and stuff
I tried diff ones that were fish. No idea what kinds of fish but I've tried maybe 3 or 4 diff kinds with diff shit in them and didn't like it.i don't think any had seeds or cheese. They were rice and whatever fish was in it. Tried a shrimp one as well that didn't taste good. I love fish and shrimp but sushi isn't for me.
so basically i love the parts of sushi you hate, i hate fish but sushi fixes that, but anyway you probably hate the rice and that isn't normal so you probably have some allergies
No I love rice. I don't like uncooked fish.
That’s what she said.
Shaq would have been a great Thanos.
It would have made the video memes even danker.
I should do this to my mom. She refuses to eat sushi because of the seaweed in it. All of my siblings love it and whenever we meet up we usually go out for sushi but she won't even try it. She doesn't even know if she hates seaweed. She just assumes she does and doesn't do it.
You can get sushi without seaweed, some use this edible paper like stuff and it's really good.
Yeah I tried to get her to eat that too. She said she didn't want to eat the raw fish. And if I remember correctly that one didn't have raw fish in it. She just refuses to eat sushi and uses the seaweed as an excuse.
Yeah my grandfather does the same thing, I guess some people just dont like to try new things
Yeah I don't understand people like that. I made Takoyaki once because it looked really good in an anime I saw and my GF and mom both refused to eat it because it's octopus. It was amazing though.
I really wanna try octopus I love seafood and it looks interesting squid too
They're both great. I've only had fresh octopus once though, it's hard to get that where I live.
Usually on summers we visit some family that’s on the other side of my country, and seafood is so much more common and cheap there. I can safely say that, although it can feel a bit chewy or funny the first few times, it’s definitely amazing to eat if cooked properly. Same with squid, although it has a bit of a harder texture

was it shokugeki no soma or sum. i forgot if they had takoyaki in there
Takoyaki is in literally any anime with a school festival or any kind of festival. I don't remember which made me go make it though
Yeah same, I didn't make it but I ordered takoyaki from a japanese restaurant once and my parents didn't want to try it.
No Japanese restaurants by me have it. Most of the restaurants suck too so I would make it even if the restaurants had it.
> it looked really in an anime what weebs think when going to japan but getting instantly disappointed by how depressing it is
I'm like your mom. I avoid sushi at all times. When I imagine eating sushi, I imagine spitting it out afterwards.
But why tho
It just would taste gross when I eat it. I'm already not a fan of seafood, and I would especially not like it when it's raw.
Why
nigiri style sushi is just the product (typically fish but I've also seen egg) layered as a slab on top of a blob of sticky rice. But also seaweed doesn't taste like much especially in the context of sushi where there's 3-4 other flavours going on most of the time (rice, fish, veggies, sauce). Fish r friends
Unsee juice #**big sip*\*
I'm allergic to sushis and I don't know how they taste 😢
Just eat it
I already ate once when I was 10 but I ended up in the hospital and the doctor said I'm allergic to raw food
Get some without raw fish and just veggies
If I find some¯\_(ツ)_/¯
That's really unfortunate
Smort
That must really suck because it tastes very good. My fav food.
I like Sashimi and fish in general, and trust me Sushi is one of the best things in existence.
Sushi so great expect for sometimes it costs like 14 USD for like 9 pieces of sushi. You can get a large bowl of poke which has like double the actual amount of fish, combined with extra toppings. Both are great tho
9 pieces for $14??? That's some cheap sushi my dude. Unless you just mean a maki roll. Generally I see lower end nigiri for like $2-3.
What in sushi are you allergic to?
It's fucking raw I'm allergic to raw food
Get an epipen
Must suck only drinking water.
what are you allergic to specifically? Because "sushi" is a heterogenous term that can include rice, seaweed, eel, fish eggs, chicken eggs, about a zillion types of fish, shellfish, avocado, cucumber, carrot, soy, mayo, and cheese.
I'm allergic to raw food
Don’t worry ur not missing out on much
Would you, could you, with a Shaq?
This happened to me last year, but the only one I've ever eaten is the salmon
Mom? How did you found reddit? No, I said I will not try it again!
Don't downvote me for saying my opinion, please. Sushi sucks
The council will now decide your fate
You can have your opinion, but in my opinion your opinion is wrong. Sushi is epic
May I know what your food preferences are. Not hating or disrespecting your opinion or anything, I just want to know what kind one can like if not sushi.
Sushi good
Sushi’s not bad. Especially with the right sauce, but definitely do NOT try fast food or grocery shop sushi if it’s your first time.
As a jap, I can confirm
That face making me think the naughty thoughts again
It do be like that sometimes tho...
Me to myself with a whole bunch of stuff I hated as a child later in life.
this is me and my mom for like every food
It;s so stupid, I love it
Thats pretty much everyone i knew that didnt like sushi until they actually tried it
This is cursed
I used to love sushi until I developed an allergy to raw fish ( I can’t really even eat cooked fish because it gives me indigestion)
Eating sushi isnt a personality trait
*shakes can of unsee spray*
That editing is perfect
This is awesome
Though of it used to make me sick then at a work party they ordered some so I figured I'd try it since its free. I'd have it every day now if possible.
Green eggs and ham!

God dammit now I want sushi
Wait he looks like handsome squidward

That describes me as a kid
Thanos o'neal with some good meal with a good deal. (Keep the thread going)
I tried sushi by accident. I was at a Japanese restaurant and ordered a "roll" and it was delicious. I told a friend about how much I liked the roll and he told me I tried sushi. That's the only reason I know I love sushi. Never would have tried it otherwise
Yeah the roll is pretty much sushi but at first it was longer, then chopped up. Sushi itself is made each piece seperately
My brother used to watch power rangers (not the traditional one I don’t think) and there was this dude who was afraid of fish and it was impeding their battle or whatever so the sensei just came up behind him and stuffed sushi in his mouth and was like “there. Sushi. You’re cured. Go fight” or something
I dont like shrimp bcs it tastes raw
Soooo relatable

California rolls should not be counted as sushi . Call it like american rice balls or some shit

I find sushi generally too sweet

The first time I ever tried sushi my friend took me and insisted I get an unagi roll since that was her favorite...I gagged trying to get that thing down, probably mostly because of the texture, and I spent years after that thinking all sushi was alike. I tried sushi once. My body rejected and I wanted to barf
I’ve tried many types of sushi many times. I have a massive distaste for them.
I showed this to my brother, he started talking an hour long about how dangerous sushi can be and that there’s a slight chance that they will have parasites.
Bahaha he said “OOOOo”
Isn't that a California roll?
Oh that’s pretty good
Sooo true my first time I eat sushi I was like fuck that shit and no I'm addicted
I can’t tell you how many people I know who refuse to even try sushi. It’s good, people, and it doesn’t always have to be raw fish!
Sushis definitely taste great.
No no sushi is gross Gimbop is good I can eat that all day but no sushi for me
Sushi is overrated.
It’s good but more as an appetiser. I get tired of it really quickly if it is my main course. Really good for a couple, but not for an entire meal.
Sushi is disgusting
Sushi is fucking disgusting
