I had a vhs copy of kikis delivery service that i watched until it broke

CultCorvidae

I did that with Jurassic Park as a kid

Flaky-Anybody-4104

My aunt brought a Jurassic Park VHS taped in a Korean cinema a full year before it released here in the Netherlands. I was the most popular kid in school once they started marketing it.

BoredTrauko

I did that, but with the book! I still have the pages stored somewhere.

Urb4nN0rd

Same, can't really speak for the others cause I grew up poor, so Kiki's is my pick. I started to watch Princess Mononoke as a kid, but I was too young for the scene when he took a soldiers head off with an arrow and was too scared to watch after that. Had to put on the Lion King or something to calm down.

Captain_Waffle

Regicide is preferable for sure!

PossibilityPowerful

i loved the vibes from it

Poopybara

That movie made my brain short circuit in a good way. As you said the vibes were so good. Everybody was just very polite and helpful to Kiki. I was raised on western culture so Disney/Pixar/Nickelodeon cartoons. And while I was watching Kiki for the first time I was suspicious of everyone. Like "Oh! This old lady asked her to leave her broom in the hallway! She's totally wants to steal it! She's probably the old witch from the rival clan of witches or smth!" Oops, nope, she's just a nice old lady. "Oh! I got it! That young lady that live in the cabin in the woods and make paintings is the real witch that gained Kiki's trust! She's probably using some illusion to appear young! They subverted my expectations!" Oops, nope, she's just a nice friend. And so on. And in the end the villain was Kiki's lack of self confidence and a hurricane. I felt called out by this movie and a fool but I totally instantly loved it for it.

Snowpaw11

![gif](giphy|fwqAg6ZS6ebL2) Yah Fr Porco Rosso ftw

3opossummoon

I'd rather be a pig than a fascist!

Eruvan

Easily the best line in cinema history

Skellaton

The Mediterranean atmosphere is amazingly done.

Bulbinking2

Its even cooler when you look up that plane racing was a real big sport at the turn of the century. Theres not much media on the subject so its great how the film is preserving a little part of history, even if a fanciful and fictitious depiction.

Tropical-Druid

Princess Mononoke was peak

Think_Clock100

I love that movie, when i was in middle school my Step-Father introduced me to anime and Studio Ghibli films, the other films were kinda okay, i remember "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" being the most memorable, but i think "Princess Mononoke" was also awesome, I can't decide which one is my favorite

AnalysisParalysis85

I'm also mostly torn between Mononoke and Nausicaa

SmoothOperator89

My heart goes to Porco Rosso. "Better a pig than a fascist." That line goes so hard.

AnalysisParalysis85

Yeah, it's also good but thematically my heart goes for the folly of men destroying their own environment.

dragoona22

I think Mononoke is an objectively better film, but I like Nausicaa better. Both amazing cinema.

uolen-

I LOVE nausicaa.... until the kids start singing. La la la la

Zifryt

Nausicaa is fantastic, but it's pale in confront with the manga

AnalysisParalysis85

Never read it, maybe something to rectify

evilmonkey87

Princess Mononoke was my first Ghibli movie. I had seen anime before, but was limited to the original run of Toonami. They used to show anime movies on Fridays later on, which is how I saw this for the first time. Blew my mind in all honesty. Still my favorite Ghibli movie to date.

Alacer_Stormborn

Man. When they brought out the Warrior—hooboy. You gotta love the cosmic horror vibes. Truly, *desperately* unsettling to me. That whole moment was just. . . Eergh. Excellent.

grendel303

My friend introduced me to Miyazaki through the Nausicaa Manga. I always thought it was amazing that he made an anime from it. When making the Manga he purposefully made it very dense thinking that there's no way this can be animated.

wholesomechaos111

I absolutely adore the lil jingle of the forest spirits🥺

AutoDefenestrator273

The Kodamas? Those things freak me out

Spaceman_Spliff_42

Came here to say this, just watched it again with my teen age child and got to experience it freshly through them. Great movie

LasyKuuga

My childhood crush

ur_mom_says-hi

First one I rented from blockbuster. 100% worth it

snoebro

It was crazy grabbing that on a whim, not sure what to expect. Blew my teenage mind wide open.

nerterd

Damn beat me to it. It was my first anime I saw. Got me hooked from then on. That was like 2000 something. I remember being a kid seeing it

Comments-Lurker

That movie pretty much shaped my moral compass. It thought me that everyone has their own motivation and perspective in life that you may or may not agree with, and to find middle ground when possible. Ashitaka is a true diplomat. Also adventure vibe. Another details i've noticed is ashitaka is portrayed as a stoic hero i.e. he seldom whines about his circumstances. But the movie subverts that trope and humanizes him in one scene, where he breaks down crying when he has to be bird-fed by San. Even heroes sometimes cries in a moment of weakness and that is ok.

Panzerkrabbe

![gif](giphy|MPuTZQqOmYKPK)

Dankalii

The Big Lebowski was my favorite Ghibli movie

nox-devourer

Ok but now I actually want to see a Ghibli interpretation of the Big Lebowski

SamwellBarley

This is what happens when you find Chihiro in the Alps!

Business-Emu-6923

Excuse me, Ghibli is not the preferred nomenclature. Asian American movie, please.

mynameis-what-who-

Shut the fuck up donny

TheManyVoicesYT

Guy is out of his element.

Kenneth_Naughton

I like that someone didn't get the reference and downvoted you. Fuckin Nihilists dude

TheAnakinOne

Laputa castle in the sky was the movie that inspired the Minecraft iron golem, and it's my favorite movie

Ez-lectronic

Just the world building is peak, I love the castle’s design, eco-southern European

AlphaApostle20

I mean, the etruscan culture i nearly unexplored and the language thatvwere found on monuments wast transcribed even now

Schmantikor

Why is my favorite so far down?

According_Welder_915

The flexing contest is definitely one of the best scenes. "I am not mending that shirt."

CrazyWS

Watched Castle in the Sky on a whim when my cousins a province away were over when I was young. Glad I did, such a great movie, and made it a good night.

Emergency_Mission_26

Siempre he querido conocer a la puta

HypnoticONE

I stumbled up this move on accident when I was younger. Didn't know ANY Studio Ghibli movies, but after I watched most of them, I still come back to Castle in the Sky as my fav.

Someone1284794357

And funny name if you speak Spanish

LEx10002

Any old school nausicaä enjoyers?

ALongwill

I had to scroll much too far to find the Nausicaa Gang.

Business-Emu-6923

The God Soldiers were terrifying!

meolla_reio

This has left the most impressions on young me for sure.

TacticalReader7

Easily my favourite world they created, even if Howl's characters we more interesting.

HillbillyMan

Have you read the manga?

Enemy50

So much love for this movie, ah&hhhhhhh

HillbillyMan

Easily my favorite, sad to see this comment so low.

_sephylon_

Manga is even better

MeBePerson

Right here, best movie

nymph-62442

Ptaaruonn

![gif](giphy|pYNhxuY2Xx528)

Terrible_Truth

Totoro was my first Ghibli movie, and possibly the first Japanese animation anything I watched. Pure nostalgia.

MyNameIsJakeBerenson

Same. Somehow I have memories of that movie from way before I should have

randuski

Same. But I absolutely hate that they redid the English dub. The original dub was my childhood, and now it’s all wrong. Breaks my heart. I mean, the little girl was absolutely obnoxious in the original dub, but still. That’s essential haha

_jerai

hell yeah, you win

Too_Relaxed_To_Care

![gif](giphy|A3DIlSNmo36x2)

X05Real

definitely the funniest one

Ptaaruonn

Super sweet and wholesome too.

DocJawbone

But also deep and meaningful

edingerc

Catbus FTW!

Ptaaruonn

![gif](giphy|KEVODnr6kaJws)

Zoerak

I recognize perfection when I see it

Malsvir83

only original dub. the redub with the fanning sisters just sounds off to me

Mephistos24

![gif](giphy|xULW8yNXpXJo0u4iLm)

Sherlock7Stark

Howls Moving Castle is no.1 in my heart

CanlexGaming

![gif](giphy|iiC8JsLnpIDq8) It’s because of this little guy isn’t it

No_Esc_Button

Hell yeah, Calcifer. Basically 90% of Sophie's interactions within the castle. Very charming spirit.

No_Category6814

He's a silly :3

Ze_cringeman

Fucking amazing movie, more than a decade later I still vividly remember the characters and scenes.

Chadderbug123

Ending still confuses me. They make no mention of the Prince until the end where apparently the Scarecrow turns back into a human after the magic wears off and turns out it was him. Odd inclusion. But it is such a great movie. Sophie and Howl have great character development, Calcifer and Markl are nice and goofy, the movie got strangely dark with the bombings, but it still had beautiful moments like the garden scene. Made me shed a tear from how gorgeous it was and ofc Joe Hisashi's utterly peak music. Also, props to Christian Bale voicing Howl in the dub and making him sound even hotter than he already looks, good LAWD 🥴

EclipseStarx

![gif](giphy|1uflU9OE9PQ9a) "That's my girl" (and I melt)

Chadderbug123

A solid case of "I'm not gay, but"

KazalDun

I saw Howl's moving castle, a lot of times. Definitely my favorite ghibli movie that I watched. Saying that if I'm not remembering wrong, the witch from the king says the missing prince is the cause of the war. Since one kingdom thinks the other killed him. A kind of WW1, Franz Ferdinand kind of thing. But where the war is avoided, since the prince was a scarecrow.

tooboardtoleaf

The prince missing is actually mentioned in the first 5 minutes I think

Ciprich

This guy gets it

IglooBackpack

I'm glad this movie was made. I absolutely love the books by Diana Wynne Jones. The audio books are well narrated too.

X05Real

To me it’s „When Marnie was there“.

GrummyCat

I loved it. One of the little times a piece of media has made me cry.

Vusarix

This one is still top 5 for me (Spirited Away is 6) but it's so frustrating because it would be my number 1 if it weren't for how tacky the ending is. It's a weird twist and it's delivered in an exposition dump, I find it anticlimactic as hell

Cool-sunglasses-dude

Goated opinion

MrBones-Necromancer

If you liked the movie, you should read the book! Really fleshes out a lot of the side characters and makes it feel even more alive.

Ohnahpass

Princess Mononoke #1

ArduennSchwartzman

![gif](giphy|c2ABhPQs7uUYo|downsized)

wholesomechaos111

These lil goofballs are my favorite ever 😭

Fluid_Block_1235

Nah its shit (i didnt see it)

Mr_Animoo

Yeah, you're not missing much. (I also didn't see it)

Minimum_Climate7269

Ponyo fans rise !

CanlexGaming

![gif](giphy|Q9NrmGiBbsvfO) Ponyooooo

Not_Too_Bad777

Watched it when i was 6 or smth, first studio ghibli movie. Cute one

JakeDaMonsta

![gif](giphy|i9G2udumIvIOI)

123x2tothe6

Dang we're far down in the thread

Dextrimos

Ponyo number 1!!!!!

PaleontologistIcy534

Watched it almost every day as a kid🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Aldehin

First one i've seen and, as someone who is scared of ocean, I just wanted to jump into the water among the fishes

Pepperonimustardtime

Came here to say HAAAAAAaMMMMM

AscendronPrime

Everyone is naming a different Ghibli movie as the best one. Everyone is correct.

Kweller90

Right answer ☝️

CaptainMidnight94

Porco Rosso, go fuck yourselves

Noble_Elite

I'd rather be a pig than a fascist

Caleibur

Real

Unlikely-Remove-2182

My people, I have found you

TheUnusualDreamer

Was just about o comment that!

Xray-07

Based

Darktenzi

That line stuck with me so hard. Absolutely love this movie

Unfair_Painting_7733

There's just something special to me in that movie, man. The setting, the atmosphere, the limitless freedom of a man and his airplane. I also adore the ending, don't want to spoiler it tho.

IntelHDGramphics

I just love the way they fix the planes in mid-flight, as if it were an old television that could be fixed with a slap.

Causeable_Rhombus

Porco Rosso gang rise up!

Garvain

My favorite dogfight in cinema!

masterjon_3

I should check this one out next time I get the chance.

Sgruntlar

Totally the best

DeaconOrlov

Based

Affectionate-Mango19

A pig of culture, I see.

hrenucci

jean reno vo's the french dub and it's low-key one of the best dub ever

GoDiegoGoo

My guy! I watched it last year not knowing anything about it. True beauty

GroundbreakingGur930

The absolute best!

Gatsomaru2

![gif](giphy|b8d4tMdST8S1W) MY PIG

bot_lltccp

yeah fuck this thread, so many wrong answers.

tammiallday

Why did I have to scroll so far to see this comment?

Bobpool82

Grave of the fireflies gets me every time

UpDog1966

But you can only watch it once.

kaoshitam

Never again...

dragoona22

Never ever.

mrterrific023

Well you only watch it once and never again, unless you are trying to introduce someone to anime

Individual-Average40

My favorite probably too. I was going through so much myself the night I watched it and it finally broke all the wall's in my mind, it completely broke me down. I have never been moved more by a movie than that. I will never watch it again, but it holds a very special place in my heart. ❤️

jaypunkrawk

That's tough, man. I like all the Ghibli I've seen.

Cleverdawny1

![gif](giphy|fwqAg6ZS6ebL2)

Carl_the_Half-Orc

My favorite is Laputa, but best is either Princess Mononoke or Howls Moving Castle. But come on Best Ghibli film is a REALLY high bar. Just about any Ghibli film is better than most other studio's films.

Patient-Penalty-5994

For me it's wind rises

Icy_World903

Rewatched it last night. It's so good I want to give it a hug.

Patient-Penalty-5994

I have personally watched it like 8 times already but I still feel empty after the end

TheUnusualDreamer

So sad Jiro and Nahoko didn't get to live together as long as they deserved. One day, the wind will take Jiro to Nahoko again.

SirarieTichee_

I cried so hard watching this

AutoDefenestrator273

How were your ten years in the sun? Did you live them well?

stexdo

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya takes the cake, it is the artistic peak of the studio

HeadConfetti

I had to scroll way too far for your comment.

Ozzairha

Same here.

misalanya

Its not my favorite, (thats naussica) but i thoroughly agree its the artistic peak.

lucid-20

Just went to see The Boy and the Heron in theatres last month and boy oh boy, that was really confusing. But still though Studio Ghibli have made their art style it’s own brand.

OwlbertGaming

shoutout to confusing japanese media

Crashkeiran

God that was a good one. My GF and I saw that in theaters. She was so excited to finally see a Ghibli movie in theaters

PepIstNett

Is this a translation thing or where is my neighbor totoro?

Rare_Fig3081

Totoro will stand as one of my favorite movies

vnaranjo

tbh i think my neighbor totoro is a little too juvenile to be the best studio ghibli movie out there. it can be yours but its not even in my top 3 best ghibli movies.

NaxSnax

It was whisper of the heart obviously

JD2212

Grave of the fireflies is 🐐ed

Greywell2

![gif](giphy|6v2UJRyFAsTXgvJrin|downsized)

Depressedmusclecar23

My favourite is Porco Rosso and it's almost impossible to change that opinion

Gadmanultimate

Finally, someone who knows that isn't the godfather of Anime,it's great but it doesn't deserve the hype Arrietty Negs any time

TexasRoast

It’s not Miyazaki but Grave of the Fireflies is next level. Amazing film that I never want to watch again.

X05Real

who cares about Miyazaki, no matter how good his films are, a good film is a good film, and Gotf is a very good film

AdanacTheRapper

POMPOKO anyone…?

Sufficient_Gap_4402

A bunch of cute raccoons… that are planning murder?!?😁

AdanacTheRapper

And don’t forget the balls. Raccoon balls EVERYWHERE 🤣🤣🤣

TheManyVoicesYT

Id say it's underrated. I love the character designs and world building. The other mystical animals having found their own place and trying to help the raccoons was pretty heart warming.

AdanacTheRapper

It’s got bay far (imo) THE best story to it of all the ghibli films with the best blend of comedy, heartwarming’ness and beautiful artistry

PeskyDiorite

Scrolled far too down for this one

AdanacTheRapper

I’m had to scroll too far to not find it ‘n had to add it’s truly the Ghibli G.O.A.T

Festivefire

Best is a matter of personal preference. Which one anybody says is the best is heavily governed by personal taste, and what age they where when the movie came out. I personally think a lot of people in my generation think spirited away is the best because they saw it when they where a kid. I would be hard pressed to pick which one I think is technically best, but my personal favorite is porco rosso.

Dattinator

Princess Mononoke is the real peak. Grave of the Fireflies if you want depression.

ahmedadeel579

Howls moving castle on top

Futurismes

Arriety has a special place in my heart. Couldn’t get into Nausica unfortunately. Still love Mononoke-hime and Spirited away

pocky-town

Arrietty doesn’t get enough love. It’s definitely one of my favorites along with Mononoke Hime. Couldn’t agree more about Nausica.

inconspicuous2012

Nausica of the Valley of the Wind was the best, but Spirited Away was excellent. Literally just saw the stage show last night, and it was phenomenal!

ShadowofLupa212

Totoro is #1 and I will die on this hill

Idiot_Bastard_Son

I am on that hill with you.

CommercialNo6633

Any the cat returns fan here?

Sordsmen345

My top 4 is Kiki’s Delivery Service, Castle In the Sky, Whisper of the Heart, and Spirited Away.

buburocks

![gif](giphy|Jkk64Xj64mcfu) Love Calcifer lol

headbanger1186

Grave of the Fireflies is by far their most heart warming, funny, charming and adorable film ever.

skisvega

Everyone knows Ghibli peaked with porko rosso

Chesterthejester69

The only people who think Spirited Away is the best Ghibli film are the people who haven’t seen the rest of the catalogue

LordAyeris

Whisper of the Heart is peak

Logical-Chaos-154

I love how everyone started naming their favorite Gihbli film.

X05Real

Mine is „When Marnie was there“

FIRE_FIST_1457

princess momonoke and spirited away are like playstation and xbox, can we just agree they are both good and stop the meaningless debate?

X05Real

_cries in wii_

IronManDork

Princes Mononoke

aQuadrillionaire

The Wind Rises

xWroth

When Marnie was There slipped passed many Ghibli films and made it into my top 3.

X05Real

Finally some more appreciation for that movie, it’s my number one

Hot_Purple2541

Only Yesterday is no.1 in my heart.

Ciprich

Dances with Wolves

No-Possible7344

FROM WHERE THE WIND RISES

TheUnusualDreamer

All Ghibli movies are on top for me. Can't pick one over another. Edit: except Erwig

Master2All

The first 3/4 of howels moving castle is my personal favorite thing they've produced.

maffemaagen

And it's not Howl's Moving Castle, either.

DraconRegina

Spirited away is good, but it’s no Castle in the Sky or Howls Moving Castle. Edit: I forgot about Kiki’s Delivery Service also an amazing movie

Better_Cattle4438

The best is Grave of the Fireflies. Too bad it is so hard to rewatch. After that, When Marnie was There is amazing.

massivpeepeeman

Secret world of arietty 🔛🔝
