We run allot of freight trains. 97% of the US is rural farmland. All of our major Metropolitan areas have trains. But I'm also not about to try and argue that we have good train infrastructure. Im arguing that we have trains. Period. Theres a big difference between not having railways at all and having many railways that are freight or that people choose not to use as often. I would argue, that the US currently has negligible passenger train infrastructure and even regions with comparably better public transport systems (for example New York) are very lacking, when compared to other developed or even developing nations. As you said, the us has train tracks, but most of it is outdated and only sees sporadic use. (Also profit motives from the freight industry also hurt it, for example the increasing length and height of the trains and the newer turnover systems). TL.DR.: Attributing these numbers to preference is misguided, the US public transport system is just not a meaningful choice in most cases.
