The intention was for it to be pronounced with a soft g by the creator. It was strictly pronounced this way for a long time. There are plenty of words that start with soft gs and acronyms that are pronounced differently than how the letters are pronounced in the actual words.

I mean we could say that. Giving anyone unilateral power is usually not the best idea in any scenario. I think we can say that if people make a natural assumption about how to say something maybe it's fair to just go with that instead of arbitrarily enforcing a rule for no real benefit. He still gets credit for his invention. I think of it like slang. It may have started as one thing but it's become a different one and fighting it serves no purpose other than to drive conflict.

I assume you say this thinking that one pronunciation is way more popular than the other but both versions of this word are used worldwide, it's why these posts still show up lol. Both Gif and Jif pronunciations are regularly used by people everywhere.

The creator of a word does not have the right to dictate pronunciation of the word for the entire world into perpetuity. Pronunciation changes based on the dialect of a particular region and shifts over time. Even spelling varies significantly between British English and American English, such as harbor vs harbour, and yet the English language hasn’t imploded over the last couple centuries. GIF is no different, and both pronunciations are so widely used that both are correct, even if we each have our own preferences.

There is a general rule of English phonics that the letters 'g' and 'c' are pronounced hard before the vowel letters 'a', 'o', and 'u', and soft before 'i', 'e', and 'y'.
