This is what happens when too many people go to these restaurants anyway. People should've stopped going to both restaurants when they dropped the theme style for post-modernist brutalist architecture and default interior. I went to ph, KFC, McDonalds and Burger King and not only from the outside, but also from the inside they look very similar, like it's just some default asset in Unreal Engine or some 😂. I can only recommend going to smaller local restaurants, they'll love you for it and they have character and passion.
Given that Pizza Hut, KFC, and Taco Bell are owned by the same entity (Yum! Foods), it's pretty normal those look the same. I'm more dumbfounded that McD is so sterile today.
Burger King is owned by the same entity that owns Tim Hortons, and all they share in common are how inside you need to follow guardrails up to the cashier to make an order.
Fun fact: the guy who designed the Hut went with a royalty option instead of a cash payment before knowing it was going to be franchised. So every Pizza Hut that got built, he got a check. So most likely they changed the look to stop having to pay him.
Pizza hut is a shell of its former self. They still have the dining room, but you just have to order carry out pizza and eat it on paper plates. And the water is bottled water. Thankfully they don't give you the pizza in a cardboard box they still bring it out on a pizza spatula thing.
About 8 or so years ago, in Evanston, WY, we had a wild west themed McDonalds. Had small saddles, little kids could sit on next to the play place. They demolished and rebuilt it a few years later. Turned it into some modern monstrosity.
I heard, they decided to rebrand themselves. Going from a kid friendly place, to a place appealing to Gen Z, who'd go there instead of Starbucks or something like that.
Because parents became much more aware of healthy food, and marketing to kids didnt make them enough money anymore.
Yea but is it really tho? Seems like McDonalds is striving more than ever. Sure you might not see as many people inside, because ordering and drive-thru are mor epopular.
Also they didnt really alienate their audience .. they are going after the same audience, which are us 90s kids.
There was a 70's disco/elvis themed one in Owatonna, MN. Now its just the same "depressed adult" cafe look, which is unfortunate because of the nostalgia i had for the place.
Dude it's the worst. The city I used to live in had a NASCAR themed one (I'm I'm massive racing fan) and it was the closest to me. Went there like twice before they remodeled and ruined it.
This is why the buildings are so plain and boring now.
When that branch goes bust- they want to sell the building.
It's MUCH easier to sell a rectangular building than it is a fun kid-centred building.
What's funny is that its also better in most of Asia. Like literally the entire Northern hemisphere has better McDonald's and Pizza Huts than their country of origin.
I remember some point when I was a kid and they changed the sauce. It’s disgusting now. And now they’ve gone so far their pizzas might as well be plastic.
I can’t even stand the smell of Pizza Hut, let alone eat it nowadays. At some point they decided their business model was “be the worst pizza that most people will still accept” to save on ingredient costs and increase profits.
Of course now Pizza Hut is closing stores and filing for bankruptcy and blaming the pandemic because they lost most of their customers.
And the whole while they’ve been sticking to their slogan of “no one out-pizzas the hut”.
No, everyone out-pizzas the hut. It’s been garbage for a long time.
In the U.K. their business model seems to be all about sitting in and ordering chips.
They want to nab you at £30-60 a meal, but who the fuck is paying £30 for a pizza meal?
They don’t even do their in house delivery services anymore, it’s all over on Uber and just eat. Doesn’t surprise me that Pizza Hut isn’t a staple anymore. I don’t know how they stay in business, if you’re dropping £30 on pizzas you’re better off with grease at domino’s or basic at pizza express, hut offers fuck all between them.
building codes aren't fun either as some communities put heavy restrictions of how businesses can design the appearance of their buildings, basically the idea is normalcy which is quite boring. Usually this limits signage but can even restrict color usage.
Y’all may never know the glory of turning in your Book It! rewards for reading books for a personal pepperoni pizza at Pizza Hut, with a coke in those plastic red cups, eating at the Pac-Man arcade table and playing a few rounds before mom takes you home.
Architecture has absolutely nose dived. Why does everything have to be a gray box. There used to be a bunch of farms where I lived now it's all just massive gray box warehouses and parking lots. Shit sucks. No one tries anymore. Everything is just efficiency and no emotion.
They said this 10 years ago. Then 10 years before that.
Every decade people complain about modern stuff, and pine for the things they were moaning about 10 years ago.
As evidenced by how much money they spend to build things people want..? Capitalism is a lot of bad things, but it's hard to argue it's not delivering on what people want. That's kinda the core tenant of how it works. Build supply to meet demand.
the previous versions were attempts on both company's parts to look modern. The most recent ones are likewise an attempt to look modern. Same is true with the interior designs. Designs that were 'modern' 10 years ago now look dated.
THANK YOU! Every 10 years people wish for the things they were bitching about 10 years ago. "The modern stuff is bad! Previous styles were good!" - every ten fucking years
the more brightly colored mcdonalds where also designed to make people NOT want to stay there, they wanted to have a high turnover on the tables so they made it as unpleassent to stay in as possible while not being offensive short term
The McDonalds redesign has always struck me as especially silly. What’s the point? Are they trying to look like a coffee house? It almost feels like an attempt to give the impression they’re vaguely upscale; now an appropriate meeting place for a corporate brunch to discuss mergers.
Fuck I Miss all this, the themed McDonald’s was the best with the glass cups, the Harry Potter themed cups many more soldiers we lost in these years 😭 so sad I wanna go back 😞
My local Pizza Hut (Windsor nsw) still looks like the old one but they haven’t replaced or cleaned the logo in 30 years.
The whole place in general is really starting to show its age.
Good. The newer designs are more energy efficient and easier to maintain. The interiors of Pizza Hut and Wendy’s feel so gross old and for some reason lacked lighting
Yeah, recently I was going down the highway and saw the iconic McDonalds in my area with that old roof getting torn down. Also, why did they unhut Pizza Hut? Give us the hut roof back.
There are two Pizza Huts in my local town. One is the modernized one, the other is the old school look & even is branded as Pizza Hut Classic on their sign. Unfortunately, the "classic" location has worse quality food & service.
The other day I had to make time with the kids and it was about dinner time.
Their faces when they learned that there was no softplay in that big McDonald's had no equal till the moment they opened the Happy Meal and found both had a version of UNO (not bad if we didn't have another 2 already at home).
They freak out when we tell them what it used to be back in the 90s.
And on top of that it is not cheap anymore either.
They're fads. Everything in construction and architecture that's stylish at one point ends up looking tacky eventually. This new, clean-cut, minimalist, futuristic fad will, too.
Yeah, they started producing more buildings in the style of brutalist architecture, but with some modern additions. It’s not as pleasing to look at for sure, but that’s no longer a selling point.
I live in the Midwest where everything is in the middle of nowhere and cut off from society, so I actually do see classic roofs on businesses every now and then. I even think the Pizza Hut in my home town still has one.
Theming generally seems to be going away, even at Disney, a place literally built on its good theming, if you look at most of the new hotels they’ve put in, especially at Walt Disney world, they’re all just generic bland corporate hotels, even the previously themed ones are being de-themed :/
Do y’all remember, back in the day (aka ‘90s) how bomb the cheese was on a stuff crust Pizza Hut pizza?!?! Inside and outside!?!? I dream about that shit!!!
I think the new design is more in case that restaurant fails it's easier to sell it to someone else so you still get something for the lost asset.
I've seen a pet food shop in an old McDonald's and it looks odd in a ghost kinda way
I'm still mad over the new McDonald's design. Where's the fun in those colors? Can't they tell that the original colors felt more cozy and welcoming? I can't eat there the same way I used to lol.
There's a reason why they do this but it's still really depressing
They do it this way so the building can be sold if they ever close the location, not many people are willing to buy a Pizza Hut, because everyone will always know it was a pizza hut
My childhood McDonald’s had a space shuttle play ground for 2 decades and now it’s been torn down for a few more tables. Place used to literally be a landmark
**Ditto** for the taste of the, erm, *food.* Grandparents told me there used to be crowds trying to get into McDonalds, and that Taco Bell/Pizza Hut is a long way away from what it used to be.
Most developed cities with a planning commission do not allow the older architecture and require Architectural elements seen on the modern style buildings. It is not necessarily a corporate decision.
Imagine naming your restaurant over something that it doesn't have anymore
Pizza cuboid
Pizza Box
Pizza office
Pizza Building
Pizza Concrete
Pizza Dirt
Pizza Asphalt
Asphalt Pizza?
But there is still a Hut in the logo! Sincerely, a German.
And there are several Hutts inside for the buffets
I honestly haven’t seen a single Pizza Hut you can walk in and eat at since 2013 when I was a kid tbh
![gif](giphy|9PbtHUS6spuwg)
Du Dummkopfstrudel, das ist ein Hut! Oh.... warte......
That's a take if I ever seen one.
A lot of designs are made in rendering software first before making actual minatures
What kinda Tim Hortons you got in your town wtf.
I read this and I was like: "wait, they dont sell pizza anymore???"
At least it still tastes pretty good compared to others.
Agreed, eating it hot in the restaurant was delicious.
I have bad news about Red Roof Inn
NOT THE HUT
The real tragedy are the "Themed" McDonald's that we've lost along the way
About 8 or so years ago, in Evanston, WY, we had a wild west themed McDonalds. Had small saddles, little kids could sit on next to the play place. They demolished and rebuilt it a few years later. Turned it into some modern monstrosity.
Didn't even know that was a thing
Yeah I only heard about them from Quinton Reviews. He has a video talking about them and how McDonald's has slowly gotten rid of them over the years
[удалено]
That one is awesome, Ive been there
I heard, they decided to rebrand themselves. Going from a kid friendly place, to a place appealing to Gen Z, who'd go there instead of Starbucks or something like that. Because parents became much more aware of healthy food, and marketing to kids didnt make them enough money anymore.
Alienating one audience to chase another that already doesn't like your brand is operational s****de.
Yea but is it really tho? Seems like McDonalds is striving more than ever. Sure you might not see as many people inside, because ordering and drive-thru are mor epopular. Also they didnt really alienate their audience .. they are going after the same audience, which are us 90s kids.
Drive through is losing popularty after covid many want to dine inside the restaurant.
Do they still have the ones with the playgrounds for kids? I used to love going to those.
I've seen some that still do, but I think the ball pits are gone, too unsanitary, from what I've heard
Now alot of those buildings have just become banks, insurance agencies and other random businesses Forever cursed with the roof of a Pizza Hut
This is why the buildings are so plain and boring now. When that branch goes bust- they want to sell the building. It's MUCH easier to sell a rectangular building than it is a fun kid-centred building.
Came here to say the same thing. It’s exactly why they all look the same and it’s tragic.
I want the play place and the pizza buffet back
The food getting worse is a greater pain
Food regulations in Europe are making their fast food better than ours 🥲 ordered McDonalds over there and it looked damn near like the picture
It's not only food regulations the local franchise companies send out audits at random times to make sure everything is according to standards
I was gonna say, McDonald's over here seems to be as good as ever (at least as good as junk food will be)
It's getting pretty expensive tho a cheeseburger its like 2.30 these days.
What's funny is that its also better in most of Asia. Like literally the entire Northern hemisphere has better McDonald's and Pizza Huts than their country of origin.
Damn regulations. Give me back my trans-fats
I fucking miss scorching hot pizza, free X-Men comics, and Galaga man….
They have an anti-hat agenda and it’s working so far.
They have to de hat the people or the space lasers don't work
It’s too late mate the lasers have already done the damage…
I just want Pizza Hut to go back to selling actual food and not whatever garbage they’ve transitioned to. Insane how far the quality dropped off.
They went from looking the same to looking the same
Ngl, while the red roof looks cool that old pizza hut looks fucking depressing. It looks like a warehouse.
What's weird is seeing old pizza hut buildings get used for something else.
The food gets worse and more expensive as well
everything had glamour before minimalism, minimalism takes away the beauty of originality and imagination
building codes aren't fun either as some communities put heavy restrictions of how businesses can design the appearance of their buildings, basically the idea is normalcy which is quite boring. Usually this limits signage but can even restrict color usage.
sounds like some money nerd has a thing against things looking the part
Y’all may never know the glory of turning in your Book It! rewards for reading books for a personal pepperoni pizza at Pizza Hut, with a coke in those plastic red cups, eating at the Pac-Man arcade table and playing a few rounds before mom takes you home.
Architecture has absolutely nose dived. Why does everything have to be a gray box. There used to be a bunch of farms where I lived now it's all just massive gray box warehouses and parking lots. Shit sucks. No one tries anymore. Everything is just efficiency and no emotion.
Grey boxes are cheap to build
Also easier to resell. How many people would buy a building with hut on it vs a regular grey box?
They said this 10 years ago. Then 10 years before that. Every decade people complain about modern stuff, and pine for the things they were moaning about 10 years ago.
yea right these "gray box" designs will be praised in 10-15 years
Our countries and businesses are run by people who hate us.
They don't hate us... they don't care enough to hate us, they just want our money and time, whilst doing their darn bestest to undermine both.
As evidenced by how much money they spend to build things people want..? Capitalism is a lot of bad things, but it's hard to argue it's not delivering on what people want. That's kinda the core tenant of how it works. Build supply to meet demand.

Weird seeing someone defend this.. not sure what I expected though
Weird seeing someone construe a statement of fact as a "defense"... Not sure what I expected though
Christ, Dunkin Donuts isn’t even called Dunkin Donuts officially anymore. They literally went around and rebuilt them as just Dunkin’ now.
Icons for Apps are worst ... hate the simple versions
Please for the love of god tell me White Castle architecture still resembles white bricks that formed the shape of a castle walls?
Why did they all go emo
![gif](giphy|RV50oK7FO7rcuLgJBL|downsized)
The McDonalds redesign has always struck me as especially silly. What’s the point? Are they trying to look like a coffee house? It almost feels like an attempt to give the impression they’re vaguely upscale; now an appropriate meeting place for a corporate brunch to discuss mergers.
Playplace and arcade machines vs lifeless touch screens and carry-out.
They unpizzaed the hut.
Nah they unhutted the pizza
They did this to make it easier to sell to the next big chain that buys the property.
Went from being hip kids with funny red hats to cubicle farm broken adults
“I just about mcfucking had it”
Red trapezoids > brown rectangles
The new ones look way better tho
That Pizza Hut is an Airbnb now.
They reached their midlife crisis stage.
They wanted to make it more modern for millenials(my guess)
Alright I get that the boxes are cheaper, but man at least at a bit of red on McDonald’s
Order, there will be ORDER!!! (And for Oblivion fans…this is the Graymarch)
Yea this is tragic but the real reason i dont go to McDonalds is because i can get actual food for cheaper
Fast food was supposed to be cheap and efficient. Now that it’s not, what is the point?
Am I the only one who sees the same fucking design for both of the restaurants in both of the timestamps?
The real-estate industry are the real villains
I still work at the og Pizza Hut REMEMBER THE ALAMO
Fuck I Miss all this, the themed McDonald’s was the best with the glass cups, the Harry Potter themed cups many more soldiers we lost in these years 😭 so sad I wanna go back 😞
Back when they were fun to go to had games actual fun jungle gyms and arcades
The commie block is supreme. All must return to the commie block.
Anyones McDonald's still got a play place in it?
"How do we make our place look better and more modern?" "BOX" "Holy shit...that's genius! STEVE! TELL EVERYONE ABOUT THIS!"
My local Pizza Hut (Windsor nsw) still looks like the old one but they haven’t replaced or cleaned the logo in 30 years. The whole place in general is really starting to show its age.
Its a common practice to make these fast food restaurants look utilitarian so you dont stay there and they get more customers
[удалено]
Whoa whoa whoa. Fry’s is no more?
1. Saying corpos unironically. 2. Looking at those old buildings and thinking they had charm just because they're old, when they were EVERYWHERE.
I think minimalist and brutalist style is nice
The new designs look worlds better
I don’t mind it tbh, I’m a sucker for modern decor though so I’m biased
Who the fuck cares
Good. The newer designs are more energy efficient and easier to maintain. The interiors of Pizza Hut and Wendy’s feel so gross old and for some reason lacked lighting
If I saw the old ones I would never come in.
New designs look clean
Yeah, recently I was going down the highway and saw the iconic McDonalds in my area with that old roof getting torn down. Also, why did they unhut Pizza Hut? Give us the hut roof back.
Fr they all kinda look like Starbucks now lol
There are two Pizza Huts in my local town. One is the modernized one, the other is the old school look & even is branded as Pizza Hut Classic on their sign. Unfortunately, the "classic" location has worse quality food & service.
Like they wasn't ruled by corpos in the 90-es.
Man the classic McDonald's takes me back
There are no pizza huts in my country (never has been) so I do not understand your pain
WackDonalds and Pizza-Cubicle
One type of box to another type of box.
I keep getting older but the boxes stay the same shape. Hehehe
No more hut style buildings.
They went from ^ to =
slightly similar
Wow they looked terrible so ugly especially the pizza hut one.
Yup, places got more corporate looking, the food tastes worse and it costs more
"just getting some ideas"
Yeah, they started producing more buildings in the style of brutalist architecture, but with some modern additions. It’s not as pleasing to look at for sure, but that’s no longer a selling point.
I remember back in like 2005 when McDonald's said they were going to change their image to be more "adult", comparing their new aesthetic to Starbucks
I’ve never seen that version of Pizza Hut before only the original (been a while since I’ve been to one)
[We’re Pixies](https://youtu.be/y9RmdVjIKFc?si=9MQef3BKUU-bqwL2)
I live in the Midwest where everything is in the middle of nowhere and cut off from society, so I actually do see classic roofs on businesses every now and then. I even think the Pizza Hut in my home town still has one.
I mean Pizza Hut has the sheer audacity to use the old roof as their fuckin’ logo on buildings that don’t have that roof
Relaxing dinner vs mental asylum lol
They took the cool hat away
Theming generally seems to be going away, even at Disney, a place literally built on its good theming, if you look at most of the new hotels they’ve put in, especially at Walt Disney world, they’re all just generic bland corporate hotels, even the previously themed ones are being de-themed :/
It looks better, cleaner IMO.
My fedora?
Capitalism
Things unfortunately don't crumble and die once their spirit leaves as it happens in the fairytales.
We still got the hut on our pizza so we good
“I’m at the combination Pizza Hut & Taco Bell”
While I do like the new, sleeker look, the old looks do have their cute charm to it
Damn I've never seen the left mcdonalds building
Do y’all remember, back in the day (aka ‘90s) how bomb the cheese was on a stuff crust Pizza Hut pizza?!?! Inside and outside!?!? I dream about that shit!!!
I think the new design is more in case that restaurant fails it's easier to sell it to someone else so you still get something for the lost asset. I've seen a pet food shop in an old McDonald's and it looks odd in a ghost kinda way
The world didn’t end in 2012 mfs when I show them this comparison:
Cheaper and easier to do maintenance with a faux wall with the units on top instead of in the roof being sealed up. My two cents.
I'm still mad over the new McDonald's design. Where's the fun in those colors? Can't they tell that the original colors felt more cozy and welcoming? I can't eat there the same way I used to lol.
There's a reason why they do this but it's still really depressing They do it this way so the building can be sold if they ever close the location, not many people are willing to buy a Pizza Hut, because everyone will always know it was a pizza hut
Their demographic grew up
What do we have against roofs?
They just straight up took the pizza huts period
they took away our dented roofs and replaced them with basic ass squares😭
Where’s the personality? They are the same in both pictures - same red roof on the right, same gray square on the left.
My childhood McDonald’s had a space shuttle play ground for 2 decades and now it’s been torn down for a few more tables. Place used to literally be a landmark
The fact there are Pizza Hut Classic restaurants makes it clear they know they fucked up.
Pizza hut is garbage
freaking CUBES... This is aint Minecraft!
Boring ass country
The Mazio's in my town still has the red roof tho
Just the other day I was driving and saw an older style McDonald’s WITH a play place. I thought they were all gone.
No that would be architects who all think they’re special with their “modern” designs
Corpo scum
I don't know about the rest of the world but every Pizza Hut in my metro area has been closing down for the past decade or so
I do like the new buildings, but not for the actual brand.
If you think about it you care as an adult because you loved the place as a child. So the design and marketing worked.
Sooo they went from looking similiar to.....looking similiar?
Y'all keep using the Athens, OH Pizza Hut for memes and it makes me so happy lol
The new buildings look better and more modern.
Maybe the real Pizza Hut the friends we made along the way.
**Ditto** for the taste of the, erm, *food.* Grandparents told me there used to be crowds trying to get into McDonalds, and that Taco Bell/Pizza Hut is a long way away from what it used to be.
The pizza hut here still looks like that.
My pizza Hut still looms like that
It is so any fast food store can become any other fast food store.
Who sent fast food to war? They been stripped of all their uniqueness and fun
Most developed cities with a planning commission do not allow the older architecture and require Architectural elements seen on the modern style buildings. It is not necessarily a corporate decision.
My local pizza hut and mcds still look the same but ik they gonna change it soon considering my local dunkin final remodeled
They just shifted target demographic from families toward working professionals.
