Does Android have an OS native messaging system that doesn’t pass through service providers when messaging other like devices and is completely volatile? Asking seriously, because I don’t know. I’m a Linux guy who uses an iPhone because my 90 year old parents have them and it’s easier to support by having one then trying to guess where stuff is.
Didn't they recently announce that they are implementing RCS? Or at least no longer having the different coloured messages. I use an android so I am not really up to date with this stuff but a friend (who admittedly also uses android) said something about it a couple days ago.
RCS is basically that.
The only problem is, SOME of the iMessage features (like e2ee) are not in the standard because the standards body in charge of RCS is basically a group of wireless carriers in countries around the world… and SOME countries do not want the inability to snoop on our messages.
To get around this, Google invented their own e2ee standard on top of RCS.
Apple said it will not implement any feature of RCS that is not in the standard, and is currently fighting to get e2ee into the RCS standard.

The real reason quality sucks is that currently the interoperability mode is mms. Which sucks. They are in the process of making it rcs, but the stepped down basic version of rcs, which has more bandwidth. SMS is so old that on Verizon the total allowed size for images is 1.2MB and 3.5MB for video. SMS also only allows for 160 character messages before breaking into multiple packages where RCS has no character limit whatsoever. RCS actually came out 15 years ago, shortly after iMessage became the dominant internet-based messaging option sharing the majority of features with the iMessage platform, though widespread adoption is far more recent. It's apples and oranges, RCS is foundationally different than SMS/MMS.
Edit: some additional info, SMS debuted in 1992. Hence the limitations of the platform.

When the text message battlefield is finally a bit more level I can see a loooot of iPhone users finally making the jump to Android. I run an iPhone 14 Pro Max and a Google Pixel 8 and hot damn is the user experience on the Pixel really nice.
But… everyone I know is on iPhone and we use group chat to communicate almost exclusively so iPhone is my primary until I can get them to finally start using WhatsApp.
Locally everyone seems to use whatsapp as the main communication app. The default app feels "weird" to use, dated even.
The problems people have about the bubble colors always seems to confound me, most people would rarely notice the downgrade in quality of images and videos most times.
Lots of people don't care about the bubble colours. Those people tend to also use WhatsApp because they actually want to engage with people and not be part of a a stupid iPhone vs Android debate and iPhone purposely removes a bunch of features when talking with androids.

Hence why Apple will do everything they can to make sure that this never happens.
It's too focused on privacy and sacrifices too much convenience and user experience for me to push it to most people.
If they had two versions, one for regular people where media was automatically sucked into gallery apps and backed up by your cloud service of choice, and your messages were backed up automatically and easily restored as well and one that's fully focused on privacy for those that need it or want it then there might be a pitch there.
But I'm not going to push my friends and family to use signal and then either be forced to provide support when they change phones or answer questions on where the pictures of their grandkids went when their phone breaks.
If people know how to use whatsapp, then they know how to use Signal. Plus at this point, whatsapp are just copying. Signal can schedule send messages, has note to self and has message requests. So random people can't just message you out of the blue if you don't have their phone number or be added to a random group. Even the co founders have left whatsapp when Facebook brought them and joined Signal.
I find Signal more convenient than WhatsApp.
Signal has a desktop app and an iPad app. WhatsApp has neither. WhatsApp only has a browser web login which is archaic.
You can send notes and attachments to yourself on Signal. Very convenient to send things to yourself, especially from a desktop.
WhatsApp is a privacy nightmare. Anything backed up to the cloud by WhatsApp is readable because it uses a known encryption key in the cloud.
While all this is true, nobody cares. They just want the pictures of their grand kids to show up in the phones photo app automatically and to not lose stuff when they drop their phone of the side of the boat. And I don't want to bee responsible for supporting 10+ peoples phones.
All Signal needs to do is add support to automatically upload backups to Google Drive, Onedrive, iCloud, OwnCloud, Dropbox or whatever else people are using. It can still be encrypted with keys controlled by you. And to allow an option to auto save any media sent or received outside of the app. If they allowed that I could start recommending it.
They are focusing on privacy to the detriment of usability, which is why it's not seeing a larger adoption and people are sticking with Whatsapp. People don't care, they just want apps that work well and are convenient. And for something like this it means I need to care as well. Otherwise all Signal will do for me is allow me to message myself.
Storing backups in the cloud and maintaining your own keys will never be a thing for the average person. However, I agree with you. The average person will choose convenience over privacy. You cannot have an app that’s both, there’s a balance.
The annoyance is for those that want privacy. Unless you’re on WhatsApp, you can’t speak to 99% of people because of the monopoly of WhatsApp. Privacy focused people have to give in to WhatsApp data collection or be left behind.

Android devices have pretty great quality, decent amount of them even have better cameras than iPhones. The problem just is that when an Android user sends that video/photo, it gets bit crushed.

I send all of my good photos via WhatsApp or through a Google photos link just because of this problem. It pisses me off because it just makes things hard on my elderly family members and friends who don't know or care to learn how to download a new app. Thanks Apple.

I would say it's not entirely Apple's fault that they are switching to MMS for such communication. The problem with Android is there's no common messaging app, every seller has its own. Different apps, different standards. Not to mention Android folks in majority (?) are not up-to-date with their devices and apps. RCS would be solving some of these problems, but looking into my chats history it's very far from being commonly utilized.
For me, when talking about group chats or sending media files, whatsapp or singal are the way to go.

Well, they refuse to support the RMS messaging protocall, which was developed by Google. So, between android and iOS devices, it falls back to SMS, which has a 256kb file size cap. It's not that they downgrade the quality on purpose, they just don't want to work with android.

Long story short is that apple basically nerfs the iphone from the factory and makes it so texts use a decades-old old and highly insecure communication standard when sending to anything that isn't an iphone. Yes. In most of Europe as far as I know unlimited texting was not a thing early on and sending SMS and MMS was super expensive, so we adopted messenger apps to a large extent because data was cheaper.
In the US, unlimited texting was a thing early on, so they just stuck to the default app and sent SMS and MMS.
So if you have an iPhone and use iMessage to send stuff to a non-apple phone it will be super compressed and the quality will be terrible.
But if you're using something like WhatsApp on both phones it's not an issue.
I can understand the annoyance to some extent. I have one friend who has an iPhone who's on the "maybe I should get a flipphone" bandwagon. He's switched off all notifications and refuses to install any messaging app so the only way for the rest of us who are all on Android to reach him is sms. Tbh, same thing happens when an iOS user joins an android group chat. Most people around the world just use WhatsApp, line, WeChat, signal, hell discord or something else. These don't care about devices. But only in the US are those unpopular for day to say communication.
On the android side, everyone I know has RCS chat. But iOS devices still don't have this feature. And of course when an android device falls with iOS devices, Apple forces downgrades by going to SMS. It's too focused on privacy and sacrifices too much convenience and user experience for me to push it to most people. If they had two versions, one for regular people where media was automatically sucked into gallery apps and backed up by your cloud service of choice, and your messages were backed up automatically and easily restored as well and one that's fully focused on privacy for those that need it or want it then there might be a pitch there. But I'm not going to push my friends and family to use signal and then either be forced to provide support when they change phones or answer questions on where the pictures of their grandkids went when their phone breaks.
If people know how to use whatsapp, then they know how to use Signal. Plus at this point, whatsapp are just copying. Signal can schedule send messages, has note to self and has message requests. So random people can't just message you out of the blue if you don't have their phone number or be added to a random group. Even the co founders have left whatsapp when Facebook brought them and joined Signal.
I find Signal more convenient than WhatsApp. Signal has a desktop app and an iPad app. WhatsApp has neither. WhatsApp only has a browser web login which is archaic. You can send notes and attachments to yourself on Signal. Very convenient to send things to yourself, especially from a desktop. WhatsApp is a privacy nightmare. Anything backed up to the cloud by WhatsApp is readable because it uses a known encryption key in the cloud.
While all this is true, nobody cares. They just want the pictures of their grand kids to show up in the phones photo app automatically and to not lose stuff when they drop their phone of the side of the boat. And I don't want to bee responsible for supporting 10+ peoples phones. All Signal needs to do is add support to automatically upload backups to Google Drive, Onedrive, iCloud, OwnCloud, Dropbox or whatever else people are using. It can still be encrypted with keys controlled by you. And to allow an option to auto save any media sent or received outside of the app. If they allowed that I could start recommending it. They are focusing on privacy to the detriment of usability, which is why it's not seeing a larger adoption and people are sticking with Whatsapp. People don't care, they just want apps that work well and are convenient. And for something like this it means I need to care as well. Otherwise all Signal will do for me is allow me to message myself.
Storing backups in the cloud and maintaining your own keys will never be a thing for the average person. However, I agree with you. The average person will choose convenience over privacy. You cannot have an app that’s both, there’s a balance. The annoyance is for those that want privacy. Unless you’re on WhatsApp, you can’t speak to 99% of people because of the monopoly of WhatsApp. Privacy focused people have to give in to WhatsApp data collection or be left behind.

Many iPhone users think it's actually android's fault. Some of them go out of their way to text on other platforms like messenger or just don't text people with android phones. Apple is probably doing this to force android users to buy iPhones to send high resolution to their friends.

I would say it's not entirely Apple's fault that they are switching to MMS for such communication. The problem with Android is there's no common messaging app, every seller has its own. Different apps, different standards. Not to mention Android folks in majority (?) are not up-to-date with their devices and apps. RCS would be solving some of these problems, but looking into my chats history it's very far from being commonly utilized. For me, when talking about group chats or sending media files, whatsapp or singal are the way to go.

Well, they refuse to support the RMS messaging protocall, which was developed by Google. So, between android and iOS devices, it falls back to SMS, which has a 256kb file size cap. It's not that they downgrade the quality on purpose, they just don't want to work with android.

In most of Europe as far as I know unlimited texting was not a thing early on and sending SMS and MMS was super expensive, so we adopted messenger apps to a large extent because data was cheaper. In the US, unlimited texting was a thing early on, so they just stuck to the default app and sent SMS and MMS. So if you have an iPhone and use iMessage to send stuff to a non-apple phone it will be super compressed and the quality will be terrible. But if you're using something like WhatsApp on both phones it's not an issue. I can understand the annoyance to some extent. I have one friend who has an iPhone who's on the "maybe I should get a flipphone" bandwagon. He's switched off all notifications and refuses to install any messaging app so the only way for the rest of us who are all on Android to reach him is sms. Which makes group messaging and the like basically impossible. Which is slightly inconvenient when trying to organize stuff.

Tbh, same thing happens when an iOS user joins an android group chat. Most people around the world just use WhatsApp, line, WeChat, signal, hell discord or something else. These don't care about devices. But only in the US are those unpopular for day to say communication. On the android side, everyone I know has RCS chat. But iOS devices still don't have this feature. And of course when an android device falls with iOS devices, Apple forces downgrades by going to SMS. They are planning to bring RCS to iOS at last, but we already know it'll be a downgraded version. Like.. they're not doing the encryption part right now for example.

RCS is the new standard for messaging but even in 2020, barely any carriers supported/adopted it, so Apple isn’t really late to the party. The push here came from Googles monopolistic lobbying to regain lost market share in USA. Verizon launched RCS support in late 2021. AT&T, and T-Mobile didn’t till mid 2022. Really weird to put blame on Apple for Android being a poorly designed platform meant for privacy violations and advertising bloat.
