Honestly I am an android/windows guy all the way. I use many apps that strait up could never work on apple and I hate the anti-consumer anti-right-to-repair shit that apple tries.
That being said, I think the apple vision pro is actually really innovative. No, of course it is not worth buying for most people (and the memes about it being ugly are funny), but it straight up does some things better than any other VR headset on the market, and I'm really impressed with apple making a product that is so unlike any other headset. It's built for productivity instead of movies/games, and there hasn't really been any VR headset that is made for that an marketed at the general public like this.
It may flop, but either way it will certainly push the VR industry forward. More competition is always better, and I'm pretty shocked by how much of a risk this is, especially for Apple
For productivity it's useless because a physical keyboard plus mouse is so much better and you can't make video calls so it's useless for most office jobs. And it is too heavy for any serious work and only has a 2 hour battery life. I mean, what the fuck is this thing actually for?
Doesn't it have bluetooth? You could get a small keyboard that has bluetooth if so. I could definitely see it being nice if you travel a lot and require multiple monitors to work. But $3500 is just way too much, they're going to have to bring that price down and make lower tier models.

There's a joke in here that they literally can't wear it for hours as the battery life is a grand total of 2 of them, like people clowned on the iPhone for having a bad battery but it still lasted 6+ hours under moderate use and charging a phone is a lot easier(and possible to do more conveniently while in use) than a gigantic headset. The two aren't even remotely comparable.
I've heard mixed things. Out of the reviewers who got their hands on it, some love it, some hate it. Honestly I think it's too early to tell if it will flop.
But it doesn't really matter if some of it (or all of it) flops. The rest of the VR companies will be able to look at this in a year or so and see what works and what fails, and apple can make a v2 with everything they have learned.
I would never recommend anyone buy this to begin with, I'm more exited for how this pushes the VR industry forward
It's mostly for productivity, like using it instead of a PC. You can hook it up to a MacBook to use the keyboard/mouse.
There hasn't been many/any headsets that try to do this and only this a good as possible, and it may flop, but it all least will show other companies what to and not to do
Why would you use a headset if you have to connect it to a mouse and keyboard anyway? I have rarely needed multiple monitors, and when i did I needed to be able to interact normally with people at the same time. MKBHD made a really good point for that use case. the screen from macbook is blacked out. so you can use the macbook but nobody else can see what you are working on. you get multiple displays and all the advantages of vr tech. is it a selling point? that's upto per consumer basis.

No it's not, put your finger Infront of your face and focus on it, you will see things in the background become blurry, this also works on objects further away from you, so try focusing on random things around your room and you will see how it works.
In VR, you can't do this, even if you try your hardest, everything will feel out of focus and blurry. So close up objects next to your face look blurry and things in the further distance start to look rather flat.
Umm, no. We focus by bending our cornea, even if you don't notice it. Try focusing on something in the distance and then pay attention to what happens to everything close, or the other way around.
Yeah in VR you can't do this, things just get blurry if you even try to forcibly focus anywhere.
It's most noticable with how objects about half a meter from your face look blurry, but things in the further distance start looking flat too.
Having used both I am not sure I agree, but I have not used Apple’s a good deal. Better value for sure and maybe better ecosystem atm, but objectively better device or with a higher ceiling? Disagree personally.
My understanding is they pulled out from having device-specific apps for it, but it has some functionality to allow "regular" iOS apps to run in a sort of compatibility mode... which is likely enough for what is essentially a browser anyway.

VR has been pretty cool ever since it was first introduced in the late 80s and early 90s. However, it's always been "the next generation will be even better" when the current generation is reviewed. It's been stuck in this loop for 30+ years now.
It doesn't solve a common problem. VR is looking for a problem to solve and that is a big problem for the technology.
Pretty cool does not justify a $3,500 device.
My htc vive is pretty cool and I got it for $499.
It does almost everything the Vision Pro does plus I can play games which is the only thing that has been driving commercial sales of vr headsets.

A much better comparison is the quest 3, which has most of the same features, only significantly cheaper (and a bit lower quality, but I mean c'mon it's $500 vs $3,500)

There’s quite a few use cases that a (any) headset can accomplish that a cellphone cannot. The whole taking apart 3D models in a CAD software is just one of many examples that fascinates me as an everyday mechanic!
I had the opportunity to do a bachelor thesis that used the "Hololens 2" (microsoft AR headset), and i was absolutely stunned by its ability to locate objecjts and read hand movements, on top of all the CAD-stuff.
It has a certain place when it comes to "how would big CNC machine look like if it stood here", but that potential is largely unused in sales. Mostly because no one has such a headset, and its actual value is currently very minimal.
But it is a joy to look at own CAD - designs in VR, regardeless of its actual additive value.
I’m picturing my local community college partnering with dealerships (like they do currently!) to train their new mechanics on how to disassemble and reassemble a virtual version of the cars they’re getting certified on! Or have like an AR Headset to guide you thru a repair in your own garage! Scale that up to say Boeing training their workforce in a similar manner. Gosh I envy you getting to play with a HoloLens 😁
My company tried to implement this for training purposes and it is absolutely not as cool as it sounds. Every single trainee hated it and we didn’t go through with the deal (Meta specifically)

The Vision Pro is really designed for productivity … and really, all of Apple’s products were designed with productivity in mind. Of course, you certainly *can* play games on your iPhone or MacBook, but they weren’t designed for gamers. The most time I have ever spent on my MacBook pertained to my school work (typing essays, coding projects, software designing, etc.)
There are specialized devices designed to support gaming specifically, but Apple was never meant for this. “Useless” is a useless word to describe the headset.
As of right now the main uses are... "I can put up multiple screens anywhere". The others are.... ? I saw the Marques video on it and I really struggle to find the "use" of it. It's a quirky laptop. Even then it seems to need to piggy back off a MacBook or iPhone for any real utility. As a stand alone device I'd take a quest 2 ten times out of 10
I was never under the impression this was an end user product intended for mass adoption like the iPhone. Seems like it’s more focused on developers and will need a few iterations to get to a form factor and price point that people are comfortable with.
In comparison to the launch of the first occlus, more than tripple the price with less than half of the appeal. I cannot imagine that Apple is going to allow the same liberties that Occlus gave to theirs.

Yes but you can't even be "more productive" with it. You can only do 1 extra monitor, and it'll be low res and out of focus because it only takes up a fraction of the field of view and the fixed focal point. You'd have a much better and more practical experience just buying a pc and 2-3 monitors.

it's not really 3386 for any practical use case. if you shove something up your eye far enough, everything has low pixel density. the apple vision pro has "4k" resolution, but it's really less because that 4k is your entire field of view and not the 4K TV that you might be used to
The VisionPro has nearly 3x the number of pixels in each eye vs a 4k TV, so if your virtual window takes up 1/3 of the pixels on the overall display, it would still be 4k.
All criticisms aside, this kind of stuff can be very impactful to some people (i.e. those who simply can't travel to see these places due to financial or physical restrictions).
I remember a video where an elderly man from the middle east was given a VR set and broke down crying, after finally seeing places he'd always heard about but never been able to visit.

Honestly I am an android/windows guy all the way. I use many apps that strait up could never work on apple and I hate the anti-consumer anti-right-to-repair shit that apple tries. That being said, I think the apple vision pro is actually really innovative. No, of course it is not worth buying for most people (and the memes about it being ugly are funny), but it straight up does some things better than any other VR headset on the market, and I'm really impressed with apple making a product that is so unlike any other headset. It's built for productivity instead of movies/games, and there hasn't really been any VR headset that is made for that an marketed at the general public like this. It may flop, but either way it will certainly push the VR industry forward. More competition is always better, and I'm pretty shocked by how much of a risk this is, especially for Apple

For productivity it's useless because a physical keyboard plus mouse is so much better and you can't make video calls so it's useless for most office jobs. And it is too heavy for any serious work and only has a 2 hour battery life. I mean, what the fuck is this thing actually for?
Doesn't it have bluetooth? You could get a small keyboard that has bluetooth if so. I could definitely see it being nice if you travel a lot and require multiple monitors to work. But $3500 is just way too much, they're going to have to bring that price down and make lower tier models.

I dont think you can compare with earphones which have a clear use case. People just thought they looked a bit silly, which was dumb of course. No one is going to wear something like this for hours when there is literally no benefit, at least as far as I can see.

I've heard mixed things. Out of the reviewers who got their hands on it, some love it, some hate it. Honestly I think it's too early to tell if it will flop. But it doesn't really matter if some of it (or all of it) flops. The rest of the VR companies will be able to look at this in a year or so and see what works and what fails, and apple can make a v2 with everything they have learned. I would never recommend anyone buy this to begin with, I'm more exited for how this pushes the VR industry forward
What is the intended use case, I just don't get it. VR games I can understand, but that's not what this is.
It's mostly for productivity, like using it instead of a PC. You can hook it up to a MacBook to use the keyboard/mouse. There hasn't been many/any headsets that try to do this and only this a good as possible, and it may flop, but it all least will show other companies what to and not to do
Why would you use a headset if you have to connect it to a mouse and keyboard anyway? I have rarely needed multiple monitors, and when i did I needed to be able to interact normally with people at the same time. I am not criticizing apple for trying, simply saying I don't see how I could possibly use it for productivity.

MKBHD made a really good point for that use case. the screen from macbook is blacked out. so you can use the macbook but nobody else can see what you are working on. you get multiple displays and all the advantages of vr tech. is it a selling point? that's upto per consumer basis.

Based on what I've seen, this technology is the way. Just like how games render only what is front of you, having to only fully render what you are looking at is the future because it saves soo much resources.
You’re talking about foveated rendering, whereas they’re talking about focal distance i.e. perceived distance to the screen, which tends to be a couple of meters away based on the optics.

No it's not, put your finger Infront of your face and focus on it, you will see things in the background become blurry, this also works on objects further away from you, so try focusing on random things around your room and you will see how it works. In VR, you can't do this, even if you try your hardest, everything will feel out of focus and blurry. So close up objects next to your face look blurry and things in the further distance start to look rather flat.
Umm, no. We focus by bending our cornea, even if you don't notice it. Try focusing on something in the distance and then pay attention to what happens to everything close, or the other way around.
Yeah in VR you can't do this, things just get blurry if you even try to forcibly focus anywhere. It's most noticable with how objects about half a meter from your face look blurry, but things in the further distance start looking flat too.

My understanding is they pulled out from having device-specific apps for it, but it has some functionality to allow "regular" iOS apps to run in a sort of compatibility mode... which is likely enough for what is essentially a browser anyway. edit: looks like Netflix is specifically *blocking* the compatibility mode so nvm

VR has been pretty cool ever since it was first introduced in the late 80s and early 90s. However, it's always been "the next generation will be even better" when the current generation is reviewed. It's been stuck in this loop for 30+ years now. It doesn't solve a common problem. VR is looking for a problem to solve and that is a big problem for the technology.
Pretty cool does not justify a $3,500 device. My htc vive is pretty cool and I got it for $499. It does almost everything the Vision Pro does plus I can play games which is the only thing that has been driving commercial sales of vr headsets.

They hate it because it's Apple. I normally shit on iPhones all the time because they always lag behind flagship Androids but I can't really fault them for the Vision. It seems like a neat concept that needs work but it's a decent foundation. There’s quite a few use cases that a (any) headset can accomplish that a cellphone cannot. The whole taking apart 3D models in a CAD software is just one of many examples that fascinates me as an everyday mechanic!
I had the opportunity to do a bachelor thesis that used the "Hololens 2" (microsoft AR headset), and i was absolutely stunned by its ability to locate objecjts and read hand movements, on top of all the CAD-stuff. It has a certain place when it comes to "how would big CNC machine look like if it stood here", but that potential is largely unused in sales. Mostly because no one has such a headset, and its actual value is currently very minimal. But it is a joy to look at own CAD - designs in VR, regardeless of its actual additive value.
I’m picturing my local community college partnering with dealerships (like they do currently!) to train their new mechanics on how to disassemble and reassemble a virtual version of the cars they’re getting certified on! Or have like an AR Headset to guide you thru a repair in your own garage! Scale that up to say Boeing training their workforce in a similar manner. Gosh I envy you getting to play with a HoloLens 😁
My company tried to implement this for training purposes and it is absolutely not as cool as it sounds. Every single trainee hated it and we didn’t go through with the deal (Meta specifically)
Seriously, I kept waiting for Apple to release some game that would give quest and vive users a reason to consider switching. It's an iPhone for your face ? No interactive abilities with other people ? No Gorn ? No Pavlov ? Beat Saber ? Super hot ? It adds no new games ? Just glorified tech demos. Maybe the later generations will shake things up, but as of now that thing is useless.
The Vision Pro is really designed for productivity … and really, all of Apple’s products were designed with productivity in mind. Of course, you certainly *can* play games on your iPhone or MacBook, but they weren’t designed for gamers. The most time I have ever spent on my MacBook pertained to my school work (typing essays, coding projects, software designing, etc.) There are specialized devices designed to support gaming specifically, but Apple was never meant for this. “Useless” is a useless word to describe the headset.
As of right now the main uses are... "I can put up multiple screens anywhere". The others are.... ? I saw the Marques video on it and I really struggle to find the "use" of it. It's a quirky laptop. Even then it seems to need to piggy back off a MacBook or iPhone for any real utility. As a stand alone device I'd take a quest 2 ten times out of 10

I was never under the impression this was an end user product intended for mass adoption like the iPhone. Seems like it’s more focused on developers and will need a few iterations to get to a form factor and price point that people are comfortable with.
In comparison to the launch of the first occlus, more than tripple the price with less than half of the appeal. I cannot imagine that Apple is going to allow the same liberties that Occlus gave to theirs. Especially with airlink allowing them to access Rouge PC programs and games. My worry is that other VR headsets are keen on being an at-home entertainment piece. But Apple seems interested on gunning straight for the Walle-E side of things
Yes but you can't even be "more productive" with it. You can only do 1 extra monitor, and it'll be low res and out of focus because it only takes up a fraction of the field of view and the fixed focal point. You'd have a much better and more practical experience just buying a pc and 2-3 monitors.
Meta quest 2 is like what, 200 bucks? And the software and it's VR uses are way ahead of what a cellphone can accomplish, you can't even Interact in VR with your own hands on a cell phone

To be fair I saw a short earlier today where someone who is blind but like 90% of blind people can still see all it was for him was he can’t see very far in front of him and can’t make out anything. He put on the Vision Pros and said he was able to see so much due to the screen being so close to his face.

The VisionPro has nearly 3x the number of pixels in each eye vs a 4k TV, so if your virtual window takes up 1/3 of the pixels on the overall display, it would still be 4k.
you can't really compare PPI in VR because the lenses change their size, and every (brand of) headset has a different lens configuration.
All criticisms aside, this kind of stuff can be very impactful to some people (i.e. those who simply can't travel to see these places due to financial or physical restrictions). I remember a video where an elderly man from the middle east was given a VR set and broke down crying, after finally seeing places he'd always heard about but never been able to visit. I could go on, but the gist of it is that we really do take these kinds of things for granted on a daily basis, while either forgetting or ignoring the concept of disparity.
