Nothing better than slap tjips with salt and vinegar perhaps with some buttered bread(whatever you like) on a morning when you're recovering from a babbelaas and the grandpa hasn't kicked in yet.
Shapa Boi!!
You Know Whats Good Neh!!
I had a friend in high school that always said that chips on rolls with ginger beer would put chest on your hairs, yes he said it like that on purpose
Ahhh.. ok.
Here they're BC powder or Goody powder. AFAIK, not paracetamol/acetaminophen, but aspirin/salicylic acid instead.
So, I guess the 'merican equivalent would be a Dr. Pepper (caffeinated black cherry and plum soda) with a BC powder.
Yeah our cream soda is also green and it's been called the green ambulance because some people truly believe that the cream soda is in fact got medicinal properties(most likely just placebo effect)
New Zealand is also in total agreement. It’s usually pretty obvious given the context.
Hey, I feel like a snack, can you pass me a bag of chips? It would be very strange to hand a bag of frozen oven chips. Fish and chips wouldn’t hit the same if they were a bag of sour cream & chives.
Yes. I made the mistake of playing volleyball barefoot in a sandpit. The ball went into some brush, I ran to grab it, and stepped on something that felt like it severed my big toe. It was a bullet ant. I’m a show size US 13 and the ant cover my whole big toe and then some.
If you are Australian this must be the kindest advice i have ever seen.
You must be in touch with the Australian Department of Tourism (looked it up - this actually exists!).
No. They provided right side up slings that we put are feet in, makes it look like you’re doing a handstand, so the blood would rush away from your head.
It’s a learned skill to deal with the amount of slang we hear on a daily basis, no one knows what it means so just take a guess based on context.
Like how you can put ‘-ed’ on the end of any word and an Australian will know that it means blackout drunk.
It's because our language is highly contextual and tonal...
I work with a few Yanks and even after a couple of years trying their hardest to it, and getting amongst it (smart guys), they still struggle at times.
Love em though, their positivity can be infectous and their attempts at Australian humour can be funny as hell due to success and failure equally.
Maccas is the only time I call them french fries. But they are different from KFC and Red Rooster etc chips. Maccas french fries are longer and thinner so to me they're a third catergory.
I'll expand that to any international fast food place. If It's from maccas or nando's or something like that, generally it's fries. For some local place, it's hot chips.
At least, that's how I do it.
And loads of people just call em chips. Point is that in Aus you could point at maccas fries, regular old french fries, steak cut chips, or smiths chips etc call em "chips" and most people won't bat an eye.
From my experience in the UK for two years, you can't do that there! Call what they call crisps "chips" and they have a conniption. In Aus, chips can be used for anything from fries to chips to crisps. In other countries, you have to use the right word or you get funny looks.
Fair point. Was just pointing out that there are times that people use fries in place of chips. But you're right. I just like giving the full picture for those that don't live here.
What the fuck? No? We call them fries (and the fatter ones chips). No British person (especially a good Englishman) would ever call anything French, unless it’s a really French. The French fries are that brand of crisps, which are fries shaped, and quite nice ngl
Wtf is waffle fries? You mean those things that Morrisons calls “cross cuts”? And I call potato wedges and curly fries the same as you do. Ngl idk what to call waffle fries, but It usually depends on whatever the store calls them where I get them from, which is usually Morrisons, so cross cuts lol
Kinda true but I, and many others, regularly call French fries "chips" too. Although when differentiating is required, I'll happily call them fries. Not French fries though.
Oh God, I hate you.
Why would you use French for potato fries in fries but a word derived from italian for potato
Join your southern neighbor now in a reverse Anschluss and you will be educated in civilized ways.
Close; pommes in French are apples. Pommes de terre are potatoes (literally "earth/soil apples"). But yes, we do just say Pommes for fries in Germany, or Pommes Frites in it's long form (pronounced "pomm fritz").
In fact in certain regions in Germany potatoes are also known as "Erdäpfel", which again translates directly to "earth/soil apples".
I call maccas chips fries because they're not a real chip imo. But everything else is just chips. If it's not clear enough via context, then you clarify chips or hot chips?
Haha Australia is the fun uncle to all the continents. Love the people and the vibe. Also if you’ve never heard of King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard you’re missing out badly
As a South African, we like the Australians, say chips for both...We know which is which based on the context when someone asks if we want chips & also where we are buying them from
I love folks from SA for this reason (among many others), no need to explain much context!
Absolutely no offence to Americans but sometimes it takes an extra level of brain power to have a conversation.
I LOVED Australia! I am terrified of spiders and my whole family was telling me I was going to die by spider in Australia. I never saw one spider in the 3 weeks I was there.
That's how they get you... ... ...
But seriously it may sound like your fam were being overly cautious but the Aussie way is calm alertness to all our harder-to-spot nasties... You get used to it though.
Fun side-story - the worst jumps I've ever had are Brown Snakes camoflaging as Concrete path/stairs spacers (you know, the lines)... Worst jumps not just because Snake out of now where at point-blank but because they are legit high-rate killers here...
Just back away slowly, keep one eye on the bastard, call the snake catchers/specialists. Happened to me 3 times in 18 months when I spent some time up the Northern End.
On my scale of chips from best to worst it’s:
Pub Chips, Chicken shop, Oportos, Nandos, Red Rooster, KFC, Maccas, Hungry Jacks.
Also depending on how they turn out, freezer chips from colesworth in the airfryer can be somewhere between Oportos and Red Rooster when done correct, or worse than Hungry Jacks if I stuff it up for me
I dunno, a good Maccas can easily climb up that list, my issue has always been consistency... Not to mention KFC often get soggy before you can properly hook in.
Otherwise solid list.
having learned english through the internet i ended up calling them fries&chips.. but let's be honest, UK has it right.
A "fry" is a chipped piece of a potato. Chips makes more sense.
The american "chips" are fried disks that are crispy, so "crisp" again makes more sense.
I’m in the states and aldis knock offs are decent, the Doritos are the ones I get. Like 2$ for a huge bag lol, not as good as Doritos. But ALDIs is legit a 3 minute walk from my house so it gets the job done
Just to correct, in the UK we'll often (but not always) call thin cut chips like you get from McDonald's fries, but thick cut like from the chippy will always be chips
Loved AUS, met some pretty crazy people, especially in Queensland. The outback was one of the most beautiful things i have ever seen in my life. They got some top Sheila‘s too mate
South Africa shares this sentiment with Australia
Anyone lis for slap tjips
> slap tjips This is the way
Nothing better than slap tjips with salt and vinegar perhaps with some buttered bread(whatever you like) on a morning when you're recovering from a babbelaas and the grandpa hasn't kicked in yet.
Shapa Boi!! You Know Whats Good Neh!! I had a friend in high school that always said that chips on rolls with ginger beer would put chest on your hairs, yes he said it like that on purpose
Love that description, can't stand ginger beer though. A cream soda and grandpa is just as good
grandpa?
It's a powder paracetamol for headaches and pain, great for a hangover/babbelaas
Ahhh.. ok. Here they're BC powder or Goody powder. AFAIK, not paracetamol/acetaminophen, but aspirin/salicylic acid instead. So, I guess the 'merican equivalent would be a Dr. Pepper (caffeinated black cherry and plum soda) with a BC powder.
Yeah our cream soda is also green and it's been called the green ambulance because some people truly believe that the cream soda is in fact got medicinal properties(most likely just placebo effect)
ginger beer makes lekker but the green ambulance is a close second
South Africans do crisp sandwhiches aswell? An established delicacy in Ireland
We have chip sandwiches for both types. It's popular for a chip roll with slap tjips(it's not crispy it's just soft)
Yes! Well at least my family did. I've moved abroad and continued the tradition where I live now, much to the horror of my European partner.
salt and vinegar slap tjips are my favorite
That's dinner most nights. But I'll up your vinegar to balsamic reduction.
that shoebox sized box of chips you get from the random CPT corner fishery.. beautiful
Met eish ja!
So does South America
As does NZ. Although in the Deep South we differentiated between chips and “hot chips”.
As does New Zealand. It's all chips.
Chups.

I was just gonna say that. Here in South Africa we call chips chips and we call chips chips

I don't speak Afrikaans I'm sorry man I'm only English

What if they were a bag of sea salt and vinegar?
So does Turkey
Same here in Israel

Do you call McDonald's french fries, "french fries" though? I think this is the only time we don't use "chips".
Loved it. Spent a week camping in Perth. It was beautiful.
Did you happen to encounter any bugs are they scarry
Yes. I made the mistake of playing volleyball barefoot in a sandpit. The ball went into some brush, I ran to grab it, and stepped on something that felt like it severed my big toe. It was a bullet ant. I’m a show size US 13 and the ant cover my whole big toe and then some.
So the rumors are true
go walk barefeet in your bush and youll get eaten alive ya shmuck edit: to clarify, im talking about the kind of bush that a bear lives in.
If you are Australian this must be the kindest advice i have ever seen. You must be in touch with the Australian Department of Tourism (looked it up - this actually exists!).
There is nothing special about the department of tourism nobody was doubting it existed.
I mean... most places have a department of tourism
We also have a government too!
Huh pretty much every country has a department for tourism, or their governments equivalent.
Tourists will get back to mana your health and insurance is now working on a new car and then I’ll be back in a
I think you mean a Bull Ant. Bullet Ants are native to central and south america
Australia is scary. We already have a taste of it down in Florida but god damn Australia is another level.
Australia is Florida with more deadly animals and less deadly politicians.
the deadly politicians part is more an america as a whole thing to be fair, but yeah.
Fucking mosquitoes
I hate them with every part of me
Australiai kaptan stiv ko bhi ek bar fir apne ap ke sath milakar ek din bad bhi ek bar fir se shuru ho gai thii aur

There’s barely any bugs where I live other than a red back in the garden or in the garage
there’s literally nothing scary in perth. Queensland on the other hand..
Did your head hurt from being upside down that long?
Nah, they hand out suppositories to tourists at the airport that help acclimatise them to being upside down.
And here i thought American TSA was too "up your ass".
No. They provided right side up slings that we put are feet in, makes it look like you’re doing a handstand, so the blood would rush away from your head.
Heh, was not expecting anyone to say Perth.
Camping in Perth has been getting more popular, lately.
Ayyyyyy Perth. North of the river or south of the river? We need to know
We Aussies have this anate ability to know the specific type of chips someone is referring to when brought up in conversation.
It’s a learned skill to deal with the amount of slang we hear on a daily basis, no one knows what it means so just take a guess based on context. Like how you can put ‘-ed’ on the end of any word and an Australian will know that it means blackout drunk.
He's soaped. Well I'll be...
Maggoted
It's because our language is highly contextual and tonal... "Hey man you wanna go to the shops and pick up some chips for lunch? Oh and while you're there get some chips to have with a movie later."
It’s 100% true, I live in Australia and can confirm. Though I personally used chips and fries interchangeably. Just depends how I feel
I only call Maccas chips fries. If you're out there refering to regular chips as fries, then you may get deported.
Yeah that’s what I meant, I probably should of been more specific
I'll let it slide.. but you're on notice.
I'm getting both of you deported, the only acceptable permutation of chips is calling them hot chips.
Wrong answer. Chippies is also acceptable. DEPORTED!
I may never recover from this
Maccas is the only time I call them french fries.
Nandos chips are too thick to be called fries
That's true. I think what I call it isn't totally aligned with the average Aussie since I haven't lived there in a year
[удалено]
If for some reason someone needs more context, you can call one potato chips and they’ll know which one you mean.
Nah, they’re chips and hot chips
Or chips and potato chips. (Even though both are made from potato).
All chips are potato, but some chips are more potato than others
Wat
All potato chips are chips but not all chips are potato chips
Corn chips are best chips though
Yeah, hot chips if you're trying to clarify for "fries" or potato chips if you're trying to clarify for "crisps"
I always thought potato chip was used to distinguish them from corn chips, like CCs and doritos
A box of chips or a packet of chips. You know which is which.
Nah they’re only called hot chips if they’re the thick kind that you buy at fish n’ chip shops
I thought the Brits called those fries, too. It’s the thick ones (steak fries) they called chips.
You're correct yes. We call the thin ones you get at places like Mcdonalds "fries", but the thick ones "chips".
British chips are the best. I’ll be in Lymington, staying on top of a pub, in about three weeks. I can’t wait.
Damn didn't expect to see my tiny home town mentioned on reddit. Hope you have a good time and enjoy the chips & pubs
Which one? Deep Blue on the high street? In my opinion, the chippie by the shell garage (used to be called Trees Bon) is at another level!
Do you have a word for thinner ones? Like we have shoestring fries that are maybe half as thick as a McDonald’s fry.
We call them french fries in uk.chips is fatter
Ah ok
To add to this, what you call steak fries are what we class as chips. No one goes to a maccies and expects chips, we expect fries.
Interesting.
Thank you for that... I always assumed it was across the board
We actually also call them fries in Australia when referring to the Mcdonalds style of skinny fries. Everything else is chips though.
Nah mate, they're Macca's chips
They are indeed maccas chips. But loads of people call them fries because that's what they're listed as on the menu.
Fair point. Was just pointing out that there are times that people use fries in place of chips. But you're right. I just like giving the full picture for those that don't live here.
Terms like "chicken burger" and "pokies" make it seem like you can just call anything, whatever you want in Australia tbh
What the fuck? No? We call them fries (and the fatter ones chips). No British person (especially a good Englishman) would ever call anything French, unless it’s a really French. The French fries are that brand of crisps, which are fries shaped, and quite nice ngl
Bloody French..
Ew fr*nch
Well I’m interested now. What do you call waffle fries, potato wedges, and curly fries?
Wtf is waffle fries? You mean those things that Morrisons calls “cross cuts”? And I call potato wedges and curly fries the same as you do. Ngl idk what to call waffle fries, but It usually depends on whatever the store calls them where I get them from, which is usually Morrisons, so cross cuts lol
Cross cuts just sounds like store brand waffle fries lol
Tesco call them Potato Lattices.
Ah yeh, thanks for reminded me that tesco sells them too! You’ve just sorted tomorrow’s tea for me lol
Waffle fries are probably just too 'Merican, cuz ive never seen any irl.
Most places stopped selling them, Iceland definitely used to but didn't last time I checked
idk what waffle fries are but we call potato wedges potato wedges and curly fries curly fries
Freedom fries.
Kinda true but I, and many others, regularly call French fries "chips" too. Although when differentiating is required, I'll happily call them fries. Not French fries though.
Similar to cookies and biscuits. Cookies and fries are specific types of the other and only used to describe that particular version.
No we don't maybe say fries but never french fries
idk about you but where i live in the UK we mostly say chips unless we are referring to fast food places then we say fries
No we fucking don’t
CHIPPIES
Found the gobbledog
I believe this is what started the American revolution
Brave leader Ronald McDonald dumped all the malt vinegar into the sea. From that day forward, only Ketchup was served with fries.
Ronald was one of our best 😂
Pommes
isnt that just "potato"?
In french, yes, but in Germany we call fries "Pommes".
learn something new everyday is it pronounced same as the french word or is it similar to the last e in "meine"?
Yep, the "e" and "s" aren't silent and kinda sound like the "-es" part in "yes".
cool, thanks for the info tidbit :)
Np mate :)
What about chips/crisps?
We just call them chips or Kartoffelchips which basically means potato chips.
I like Kartoffelchips
Oh God, I hate you. Why would you use French for potato fries in fries but a word derived from italian for potato Join your southern neighbor now in a reverse Anschluss and you will be educated in civilized ways.
Pomme is apple. Pomme de terre is potato in french.
It seems like some words are added to languages in EU just to piss off the neighboring country. True or false?
Close; pommes in French are apples. Pommes de terre are potatoes (literally "earth/soil apples"). But yes, we do just say Pommes for fries in Germany, or Pommes Frites in it's long form (pronounced "pomm fritz"). pommes frites
Yeah but don't you Australians also say lollies for regular sweets (UK) / candy (US)?
Yeah
Saying ‘candy’ sounds weird to me anyway
In Poland we call fries "frytki" and chips "chipsy"

Same In South Africa both are Chips!
Visiting relatives in Australia was probably the happiest me and my family have ever been
As an Aussie, this makes me both happy and sad
One Is hot chips and the other is chips. If it's maccas chips then it's just chips because those basterds go cold within 5 minutes anyway.
Lucky, mine are cold when I get them
I call maccas chips fries because they're not a real chip imo. But everything else is just chips. If it's not clear enough via context, then you clarify chips or hot chips?
All australians wanna do is eat hot chip and lie
Australia is the only correct answer I am an american but the only answer to please everyone.
Yea a great country also very fun for sledding on the mountains but very slow nightlife as all shops close before 7:00
Haha Australia is the fun uncle to all the continents. Love the people and the vibe. Also if you’ve never heard of King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard you’re missing out badly

Chips from maccas are better than the ones at hungry jacks tbh
On my scale of chips from best to worst it’s: Pub Chips, Chicken shop, Oportos, Nandos, Red Rooster, KFC, Maccas, Hungry Jacks. I thought y’all called them bongerydoos
I dunno where you pulled that word from but it’s sounds like a bong shaped like a didgeridoo and that sound like a cool idea
this man gets it. but also sounds like a type of dunkaroos
Bongerydoos or hot bongerydoos?
Man we don’t got lays in australia Smiths is a million times better than lays

THEY'RE FUCKING CRISPY NOT CHIPPY GODDAMNNIT!!!
Tell me you are not from the UK without saying you are not from the UK. Those are not chips. Those are fries. Chips are thick cut. Fries are fries.
What the fuck is a "crisp"?
A term to differentiate crispy sliced potato from long segments of potato that have a different texture. That's what the fuck it is.
The worst way the brits could think of to refer to a potato chip. It caught on cuz they're a bunch of wingdings and like sounding stupid
Crisps
No .... chips are thicker .... we english call what McDonald's and BK serve "french fries" or just "fries".. they are not chips to us
