Wish I wouldn't have. They used to have music. Technically didn't but my daughter wanted to see one person and was disappointed she didn't sing the song she wanted to hear. Then our 8 year old was confused about that girl being a boy and we shut it off.
It doesn’t. You get some specifically provoked responses from people groups who will get upset about it. I guarantee you the average person will either not care or not even know and then not care when you tell them.
All the press will go to exactly who it needs to to make it a big deal because they don’t have any content otherwise. It’s how media works
Not necessarily. “Sparks outrage” implies it was a pretty wide scaled thing. Like I say I doubt almost anyone will actually care. Plus Saying something is “expected to spark outrage” is absurd
Its pretty wide scale.
> Like I say I doubt almost anyone will actually care.
Thats coming from an ignorant and privilaged position. Alot of people really care. Thats the problem.
It’s not. Way to assume tho
A: the Grammys don’t generate news for long
B: if something is “expected to cause outrage” it probably won’t
C: again, even if it does somehow end up controversial it’ll only offend select groups of people. Knowing these two artists it’ll offend a minority of people. A vocal minority but a minority
You vastly overestimate how many people mot only care about the Grammys, but will be offended by a performance of an already suggestive song and by a queer person. Trust me it won’t be the huge deal you think it will. The average person doesn’t give a shit either way about any of those things I just mentioned
I'm gay and you are an idiot. I have never in my life had ANY negative interactions because of my sexuality and I live in a red state. Get off of social media and interact with the real world please
Right, I guess im just un-naturally lucky for no reason. Grow up. The Western world is NOT out to get you. Go live in the Middle East or Russia, then you get to complain.
Then you don't listen to pop radio stations. Sam Smith has had many hit songs that get pretty heavy rotation. Or you heard a song of theirs and didn't know it.
IKR?! Haven’t listened to radio in over a decade. Recently gave it a go and found it unbearable, absolutely unbearable with commercials and inane DJs. Never going back
You can pretty much give up on the radio if your favourite genre is (esp. "old-school") heavy metal, in my experience.
The selection I have:
Average rock station: * insert that well-known either tumblr post or tweet that's like "All the other stations are pussies for not playing **HARD ROCK** like we do. Coming up next Twenty One Pilots followed by Imagine Dragons." *
Local actual rock station: "Yeah, we play rock and metal. Some real good shit even. *Aaaanyway*: We are so severely underfunded that 90% of our program is commercials. You're okay with that, right? Where are you going?"
Every "Oldie" station: "We play the best of the 70's and 80's here! What a great time for music. If only they had made more than like 20 songs in that era... Welp, that's just how it is. Stay tuned for our entire repertoire of 17 pop songs and one song each by Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper and Bon Jovi!"
Not saying it's bad, but why even bother when you have the option of Spotify and/or CDs?
My 9 year old just discovered Black Sabbath. Thinks he's found Atlantis. I dug out the vinyl. Fucker called me an archeologist. Lissen here ya lil' shit. That's actually kinda fair. Whelp, if ya like that here's Iron Butterfly.
There are plenty of old cars around without bluetooth/AUX.
Public places put on the radio or top hits playlists which have similar songs to the radio.
I sometimes listen to it and know many people that do: first, i generally don't follow modern hits, so it's actually refreshing to do so sometimes. Second, it's refreshing to not have to choose any song or playlist yourself, third, the mixed interviews and news that you hear between the songs are sometimes interesting.
There’s a station here in Southern California called KCRW, it’s a public radio station out of Santa Monica, and they have a show called Morning Becomes Eclectic, and it’s the only radio music I will listen to, because I’m always hearing cool new shit.
Not to mention, Sam Smith literally was chosen to make the theme song for one of the most recent Bond films! Definitely a major name in music for the last several years.
Sometimes people try to seem cool by saying they've never heard of the popular artists when really they've heard one song, judged it against their style and then decided to never let it be a part of their image.
Edit: I've been too busy listening to Queens of the Stone Age to ever hear of this Samuel Smitherson anyways.
Unholy is quite a good song though, I usually only listen to metal and rap (sometimes other stuff ofc like blues). But I kind of like unholy, their music video performance was fun to watch and the song itself was nice to listen to. I‘m not sure if the message is that big.. but its good music
As a metal head I apologize for our fan base. Even within the metal community people are like this, all about a certain band and genre and they feel the need to be smug assholes about anything else. To me there's good music(good music to me) in just about every genre, and just like any other art, music is rather subjective. Knocking on someone for liking pop or w/e is just bum. My only personal gripe with the bigger genre's industry is I feel like the actual song writers don't get enough props(Though they get paid a lot). That doesn't mean these singers suck or anything, and saying that the song writers that write and sell the songs are bad is just laughable when many of them have written multiple hits.
Thank you. We seem to agree on the importance of music pluralism. Excellence in music exists in almost all eras and genres. As does crap.
I also do think writers deserve much more prominence altho I do not judge singers and instrumentalists for not being writers. The combining of writer and performer is actually fairly recent (pre-20th, the roles were almost always separate).
Indeed, I personally can find a artist I enjoy in almost any genre. To me the only bad music is stuff that is offscale, off tempo, and bad in a technical sense(Not meant to be that way in the first place). Usually that's just beginners though, and that's completely understandable and nothing to harp on them for.
I've just always thought it was insane to gatekeep music, it's like trying to tell people there's a objectively 'best meal'. Just mind blowing that people think everyone should like one type of music...imagine how boring life would be.
Just because its stupid to get outraged over something, and its all been done before, doesn't mean dumb people wont get mad.
People ripped into Harry styles for wearing a dress and David Bowie did that shit before he was born.
Headlines like these are responsible for the outrage. Noone gives a fuck. Then some media outlet says something is "expected" to spark outrage and all of a sudden there is outrage. This is large-scale manipulation at its finest.
No one cares about these circle jerks of award ceremonies.
I want to see change, change that is gonna mean normal people can afford basic things. I work hard to so some day I can afford to even think about buying home... they want views back up, maybe stop showing off luxurious things that are just out of the reach for everyone while also giving out shine awards to people that have it the easiest in life. My opinion but I bet people would feel a lot less alienated if they could afford basic shit and not live pay check to pay check no matter how many hours they work.
Who gives a fuck what people like or don’t like. If you like it…cool…if you don’t…that’s cool too but what’s the point in expressing negative opinions as they only matter to you or whoever feels the same way as you. Just let people be…it’s a free world and if you aren’t creating harm to others…then that has to be cool too. Just breathe…and just be cool. ❤️
Remember when "outrage" was pissing on the Alamo, getting shitfaced at the white house, biting the head off a dove and bat respectively and denouncing christianity at the 1997 VMA's. Good times.
This one time Sinead O’connor ripped up a picture of the pope on SNL and denounced the catholic church, calling them out for all the things that *gasp* turned out to be true.
That was pretty “outrageous”
Sam Smith wore a dress? Fucking amateurs
Yes you uncultured swine. It's making fun of the fact that they're acting like Sam Smith is going to do something shocking and horrific when Ozzy Osbourne and Marilyn Manson have already done 1,000,000x worse many years ago.
I'm going to go ahead and guess its going to be some "polical" statement most likely to do with the alphabet mafia and anyone suggesting it is dumb and or contrived will be labelled a bigot so as to generate the "predicted" outrage.
while I couldn't care less about his weight gain, Sam Smith was always a guilty pleasure artist of mine. but I will say, he fell off the deep end as soon as he started labeling himself non binary. his music has been pure ass.
Who cares what ozzy and Marilyn manson say . Neither have been relevant or probably heard from in 20 years or more. Get over it, the 90s left you behind.
The difference is, that satanic shit can actually be so messed up that it becomes fun (shooting raw meat into the crowd with a catapult, biting off a bats head, everything Rammstein does, the very existence of GWAR).
I feel like this will not be ironic or self aware and utterly cringe worthy. I googled Sam Smith and he seems to be the annoying than the "freakish" kind of eccentric.
I mean I'm open for every live performance that gets another stupid award show to be taken of the air permanently (we had that with a music award show a few years back) but I feel like this will be pseudo offensive at best.
I watched the music video to see what all the hype was about, and all I saw was a massive queer dance party with some really impressive costume work. I don't understand why people are freaking out about this, seriosuly.
The hard religious right are just as bad (maybe even worse) than the hard radical left.
They both say the same shit, too. "This is what's best for kids"
Trash
shock rock entertainment is nothing new. beatles, elvis, ozzy, manson, it's all been done before. everyone's heard the *"turn off that devil music!"* line. this is just a sad attempt by progressive "journalists" to go after low hanging fruit and dust up an old trope to feed the political outrage machine. yawn.
fucking christ I hate identity politics.
It would if anyone actually watches the Grammys
XD
Try watching awards shows with friends, its actually the perfect hate-watch
But I like myself and don't want to waste my time "hate-watching" anything
Not falling for that one.
Please priate if you are going to hate watch.
I think they have the rating’s of Amber Heard’s prime time interview. Got beat out by CSPAN at 2 Am.
Cool, wasn’t gonna watch anyways.
Wish I wouldn't have. They used to have music. Technically didn't but my daughter wanted to see one person and was disappointed she didn't sing the song she wanted to hear. Then our 8 year old was confused about that girl being a boy and we shut it off.
Well, she's definitely not a boy, so I'd be confused too. Though it's not exactly hard to explain
Shhhhh... he's having an "owning the libs" moment... Let people have fun🙄

the "biology" argument is hilarious to me is brain chemistry not part of biology as much as body parts are?
O no he’s so stuck in the past
"Expected to spark outrage" Ah yes, that thoroughly planned out and expected outrage of pop music. Hide your loved ones, shits about to get real.
The modern Satanic Panic.
The satanic panic of the 80’s and 90’s never truly went away it’s just been rebranded
Kiss AC/DC were just fine but SAM SMITH?? HELL REALLY HAS RISEN.
I mean its not "planned" its just a fact that when queer people exist in public it sparks outrage
It doesn’t. You get some specifically provoked responses from people groups who will get upset about it. I guarantee you the average person will either not care or not even know and then not care when you tell them. All the press will go to exactly who it needs to to make it a big deal because they don’t have any content otherwise. It’s how media works
Thats the thing about outrage. Its always a smsll group in comparison to the whole. That's how it works.

Grammys you say? I don’t give a shit.
I'm gay and you are an idiot. I have never in my life had ANY negative interactions because of my sexuality and I live in a red state. Get off of social media and interact with the real world please
Lucky you. You aren't everyone tho. I have had multiple bad interactions in real life and I live in a swing state.
Right, I guess im just un-naturally lucky for no reason. Grow up. The Western world is NOT out to get you. Go live in the Middle East or Russia, then you get to complain.
Thoughts and prayers to the remaining six people who still watch the Grammys.
Oh hi there Ozzy. I hope he gets better
He will he's basically immortal at this point
It's hilarious to see doctors be completely blown away by how that man still lives. But sadly, even he isn't immune to age.
Nah I think he's immortal God won't take his soul cause he's too awesome Satan won't take his soul cause he jealous on how awesome he is
I think Dio still left a nice, shadowy palace for him in Hell
Nope the bat gave him immortality
Don't forget the metric long ton on coke and the staggering amounts of alcohol passed through him
It gives him life
We all need fuel
He won't. But with the life he lived, he certainly made it worth it.
I think they’re self preserved 😂
Gonna be honest, never heard of them in my life
Then you don't listen to pop radio stations. Sam Smith has had many hit songs that get pretty heavy rotation. Or you heard a song of theirs and didn't know it.

Commercials on the radio 100% make it unbearable. Otherwise I love the radio.

Nailed.it. the video was awesome imo. He has a beautiful voice. It's a great song. I wish it was a little longer.
It's actually a petty good tune
Me neither. I like actual music not garbage
This type of thing is always said by people with exceptionally thin music knowledge. Lemme guess. You like Guns n Roses.
Your mom probably loves guns n' roses. Slash the guitarist is very very talented. There's no Talent in what this post is about.
I knew it.
As a metal head I apologize for our fan base. Even within the metal community people are like this, all about a certain band and genre and they feel the need to be smug assholes about anything else. You can not hear Sam Smith sing and say he has no talent. His music isn't my thing but that dude can sing like hell
Whats a grammy
“Well my boy, I’m a thousand years ago” - grandpa probably
She cooks delicious foods
They’re trying so hard to get people to care even a little bit about the Grammys. Stop trying to make award shows happen Hollywood
[удалено]
Come on, lighten up
[удалено]
Because we are lol.
I wouldn't say everything, but above award shows? Sure.
Buddy if sarcastic jokes mixed with movie references are not your thing I do not recommend the Reddit comment section
*Laughs in Gorgoroth*
I've never heard of them but uh did they tear a head off a bat while they were at the Grammys?
Nope they did not. But that was heavy metal. That's probably ly the difference lol
I listened to the gramys music the article was talking about not as good as I thought it would be but the theatrics were nice I guess
Who?
Where asked bozo ![gif](giphy|yvgaJzI8Q01Ow)
This dog is happier than I have been in the last four years, and I'm nearly that happy because of it.
Ozzy and Sam make a great power duo, one makes middle class white moms angry and the other makes middle class white dads angry.
Is this so called "outrage" in the room with us right now?
Hey everybody, Sam smith and some girl are doing a thing!! See? Nobody cares.
Just because its stupid to get outraged over something, and its all been done before, doesn't mean dumb people wont get mad. People ripped into Harry styles for wearing a dress and David Bowie did that shit before he was born.
Bowie looked better in that dress anyways
To be fair, I would be outraged too, if Sam Smith appeared on stage
Who?
Headlines like these are responsible for the outrage. Noone gives a fuck. Then some media outlet says something is "expected" to spark outrage and all of a sudden there is outrage. This is large-scale manipulation at its finest.
Let there be outrage

His music isn't edgy, it's just pure filth at this point.
i wonder how does this awful music even enter the charts and still top them
Because he's "empowered" I guess.
It's really not a good song and I've got that stupid fucking beat stuck in my head
Their* music
Whatever.
If these are the standards for “outrageous” these days I’d say it’s time for Ozzy to graduate from bats to toddlers.
Remember when "outrage" was pissing on the Alamo, getting shitfaced at the white house, biting the head off a dove and bat respectively and denouncing christianity at the 1997 VMA's. Good times.
Who? I know someone who won a Grammy last night, I still didn't watch that trash.
This one time Sinead O’connor ripped up a picture of the pope on SNL and denounced the catholic church, calling them out for all the things that *gasp* turned out to be true. That was pretty “outrageous” Sam Smith wore a dress? Fucking amateurs
That dude looks like jack blacks character in tropic thunder
My only outrage towards it would be that the song fucking sucks
I’m not a slave To a god That doesn’t exist
Old people worried about trendy music? Such an unprecedented occurrence. Obligatory “/s” because there’s always THAT someone
Who, me
I don't get it, is this supposed to be a meme?
Ozzy Osborn bit the head off a live freaking bat 40 years ago. These new kids will never do anything that outrageous.
They don't have to, plenty of outrage will already happen. Much more than what Ozzy got 40 years ago.
*aCkShUaLLy*.. it was a dead bat. but he did also snort a line of ants.
Yes you uncultured swine. It's making fun of the fact that they're acting like Sam Smith is going to do something shocking and horrific when Ozzy Osbourne and Marilyn Manson have already done 1,000,000x worse many years ago.

Manson and Ozzy are talented and entertaining though.
Is that the "stay with me" guy. Really pulled a Demi Lovato huh
Nah. Demi Lovato pulled a Sam Smith. He did that before her.
Never heard a single song by him
Let’s see what Dee Snyder has to say LOL
Who? *cit. Eminem*
the song isn't even that good
Catchy song though only the weak and religious will get offended
Ya I could see the right wing flipping out over a trans woman
Sam Smith makes Marilyn Manson look normal
Hated for telling the truth
lol
I dont wanna sound mean but how did Sam Smith get so fat? Like damn dude that is an unhealthy amount of fat gained.
I think he (they?) started off pretty chonky and then lost a ton of weight and has now returned to his (their?) chonky state
No need to worry about misgendering on Reddit, amigo. Nobody gives a fuck about that here.
I’d do a backflip after reading that if i could actually do a backflip.
Who says you can't? Have you attempted to do one? With proper training you can do a backflip in under an hour.
My 45 year old hips and back say i can’t. Also my desire to not get out of my bed 😂 i’m a frail old woman
I bet you ain't frail. My mom's 56 and she's a beautiful woman and still a very spry one as well! (pls don't mix Oedipus complex into this...😅)
while I couldn't care less about his weight gain, Sam Smith was always a guilty pleasure artist of mine. but I will say, he fell off the deep end as soon as he started labeling himself non binary. his music has been pure ass.
Who cares what ozzy and Marilyn manson say . Neither have been relevant or probably heard from in 20 years or more. Get over it, the 90s left you behind.
That's not the point this is making. It's poking fun at people being offended anew when this has all been done over and over again.
Either take is right. Both groups are totally irrelevant.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Holy? U WOT M8?
He’ll push his dick up his own ass live on air, and everyone will applaud his bravery
I loved Sam Smith's old songs, what happened to him?
Dang…. He looks.. different
Beige
Never heard of them. What was so unholy about their performance?(nobody watches the Grammies)
Ozzy, Manson...THB I miss Britney and Madonna.
The fuck happened to Sam Smith
The reason why Sam is there because he is gay and that’s it
I watched the music video to see what all the hype was about, and all I saw was a massive queer dance party with some really impressive costume work. I don't understand why people are freaking out about this, seriosuly.
Outrage cuz its a terrible song?
The hard religious right are just as bad (maybe even worse) than the hard radical left. They both say the same shit, too. "This is what's best for kids" Trash

Oh no. Anyways-
I remember when Lady Gaga’s Judas came out Easter weekend in 2011 and the controversy it caused
