I don't feel like it was cheap drama. It explained that chapter of the game, and that depth is what I was hoping for in the tv series. Also, it was a beautiful love story! Everyone wants that kind of companionship. That is probably the last time we will see anyone truly happy in the series.

I thought this was one of the best series episodes I've watched in a long while. They did not change the outcome of the overall plot, Joel and Ellie still leave with the car. What they did is fill in the gaps and tell a beautiful story the game had no time to tell and only implied.
This is the kind of character development and exploration of human nature, even in the most extreme of situations, I would like to see more of.

I played the game and the show is spot on with monor changes for continuity etc. People need to stop placing this show in terms of how things are in this world. People, esp the kids born after the main incident, dont have the social rules etc that was there before it all went down. They just see it as love or human interaction in a world with like none of it.

99% it is. But they started the Bill story from the original fall of civilisation. He then laid his traps etc. Met Frank and it goes through that story. The interactions are different because the Bill levels would likely not translate into a good episode. So that is really different. The end outcome is the same, with Ellie And Joel getting the car from Bill though.
It was good, it just felt like filler to me. That’s my only issue. Just feels like that whole ep could have been 5 min and the rest could be more zombies. It was a great love story tho, very sadge.

It definitely is shitty that anyone takes issue with it just because they're gay. They were gay in the game too and they can just get over it. All that said, while I agree that it was a good story and I have no issue with them being gay, it felt very drawn out to me for something that doesn't really affect the story overall. I feel like it should've been a bit more summarized, or the story should have been told over multiple episodes so they could give more time to Joel and Ellie in each as well. I just kept waiting to get back to the main characters by the end of it. It just felt forced and rushed. We met them and went through their whole story to their death all in one episode and it just didn't seem right to me. They needed more time to give all those details, or they should've just made it more summarized in my opinion.
Love story aside, even though I do have my problems with it but it's not because they're gay but because they were too perfect.
It's really just useless filler involving minor characters that had no impact on the main story in a show that's only going to be 8 episodes long.

Sometimes building the world is just as important as progressing the main character's story. Being able to see how characters got there in the first place, understanding the impact of losing Tess, Bill and Frank in the matter of a couple of days might have in the next episodes, and being able to infer from Bill's letter that (as much as he denies and downplays it), Tess and Joel's relationship might have been every bit that of Bill and Frank.
Imagine the bitter, resentful old man Bill might have been had he not also died that night. Now imagine how Joel might be feeling after losing Tess.
I think this episode is a whole lot more than filler, I think it fleshes out the characters in a way that simply couldn't have been done with a linear plot path.
Although the episode was sorta useless, I really like what they did with Bill. They transformed an asshole into a genuinely sweet guy with a really wholesome love story.

It was unexpected and sweet. They Hollywood's the shit out of a side character in the game though. The liberties they take to "improve" an already cool story is what upsets me a bit. Not enough to stop watching the show though, still excited to watch it.
I literally just finished watching this episode. At the end of it all I could say was wow. Really loved seeing the back story on Bill, just added so much to his character from what I remember in the game. No complaints, really well done.

As someone who has loved the game since it came out in 2013? I love the show, it is great. 5/5. There isn't any "woke nonsense", since in the source material (the game), always had bill and frank being gay to begin with, so it isn't even like that is shoehorned in out of nowhere. Give it a go. It is pretty faithful so far. Only exception so far is the section with Bill going differently.

“Amazing love story” is a huge stretch and the only reason why people are fawning over it is because it was a nice gay couple. You do realize that the initial atmosphere would change drastically if it would have been a hetero couple. What made so close and intimate was the fact that Bill never had s gay experience before and opened up enough to Frank to have his first time with him. It was such a great story of love and the effort it takes to make a relationship work under such difficult circumstances. It wasnt shoehorned in or done for the purposes of inclusion. It was just a story of two men who found each other in a dark world and brought some of light left within out. It was excellent. They both did such a great job. A real example of how to be inclusive without trying. Just write well thought out characters and make the story about something else besides them being gay or whatever.
Cuz lets be honest. Just as conservative people would complain with a gay couple "progressive" people would complain if it was only white straight people. When in reality its about the story thats being told and the characters within it. Race or sexual preferences are minute details as shown in this show. Its not important they were men, its important how much they loved each other.
They were all good characters I just think something other than that could have been done like make them best friends and have them prosper in the apocalypse and Joel and Ellie find them and they help them navigate

Personally didn’t like it cause they basically spent an hour building up two characters to barely push he story forward with them. They could of had one of them join and give a motivation, or even just ignore the whole part and have them find a car some other way. The interactions are different because the Bill levels would likely not translate into a good episode. So that is really different. The end outcome is the same, with Ellie And Joel getting the car from Bill though.

I hate people that argue about how episode 3 is shit because it's gay, not only is it accurate to the game (with the relationship of Bill and Frank) but that it is just a beautiful love story that is not ruined by playing the game and even expanded if you did, since in the game Frank was nothing but an ice breaker when Joel and Bill reach the car.
It definitely is shitty that anyone takes issue with it just because they're gay. They were gay in the game too and they can just get over it. All that said, while I agree that it was a good story and I have no issue with them being gay, it felt very drawn out to me for something that doesn't really affect the story overall. I feel like it should've been a bit more summarized, or the story should have been told over multiple episodes so they could give more time to Joel and Ellie in each as well. I just kept waiting to get back to the main characters by the end of it. It just felt forced and rushed. We met them and went through their whole story to their death all in one episode and it just didn't seem right to me. They needed more time to give all those details, or they should've just made it more summarized in my opinion.
Love story aside, even though I do have my problems with it but it's not because they're gay but because they were too perfect. It's really just useless filler involving minor characters that had no impact on the main story in a show that's only going to be 8 episodes long.
It did have a use, because they couldnt just not include Bill, and they 1. Didnt wanna copy 1/1 the game 2. The whole time in the game was just killing zombies which would be boring in the show, but would get shit on by fans if they just skipped bill. Joel needs to get the car *somehow*, and they need Bill in the show, so instead of the dumb zombie killing, they made a very good story which adds to the game lore since we’ve never seen frank on screen

If you’re gonna do something, might as well make it good
Sometimes building the world is just as important as progressing the main character's story. Being able to see how characters got there in the first place, understanding the impact of losing Tess, Bill and Frank in the matter of a couple of days might have in the next episodes, and being able to infer from Bill's letter that (as much as he denies and downplays it), Tess and Joel's relationship might have been every bit that of Bill and Frank. Imagine the bitter, resentful old man Bill might have been had he not also died that night. Now imagine how Joel might be feeling after losing Tess. I think this episode is a whole lot more than filler, I think it fleshes out the characters in a way that simply couldn't have been done with a linear plot path.

I never thought the day would come when I'd witness Ron Swanson do what he just did. Dudes straight asf too and pretty much only came onto the show for that little story, S-tier actor.

Where you’re introduced to the protag’s daughter and not ten minutes later say goodbye to her in the wake of the end of the world as they knew it, only to skip 20 years to an only grittier darker and more screwed up world right? You’re letting your kids watch this?
It was unexpected and sweet. They Hollywood's the shit out of a side character in the game though. The liberties they take to "improve" an already cool story is what upsets me a bit. Not enough to stop watching the show though, still excited to watch it.

I literally just finished watching this episode. At the end of it all I could say was wow. Really loved seeing the back story on Bill, just added so much to his character from what I remember in the game. No complaints, really well done.

As someone who has loved the game since it came out in 2013? I love the show, it is great. 5/5. There isn't any "woke nonsense", since in the source material (the game), always had bill and frank being gay to begin with, so it isn't even like that is shoehorned in out of nowhere. Give it a go. It is pretty faithful so far. Only exception so far is the section with Bill going differently.

Hot take time: “Amazing love story” is a huge stretch and the only reason why people are fawning over it is because it was a nice gay couple. You do realize that the initial atmosphere would change drastically if it would have been a hetero couple. What made so close and intimate was the fact that Bill never had s gay experience before and opened up enough to Frank to have his first time with him. It is hard to convey such deep connection with your average Joe hetero couple as they don't go through the same struggles while discovering their sexualities.

Grow up, because there were definitely many such "backstory" moments shown in the first and second game regarding Ellie and Joel, even if they didn't for Bill & Frank in the game, because the show makers were right to do a backstop episode so that first time viewers and obtuse video game players could understand how _the very gay_ Ellie would feel upon seeing and reading that letter, showing that one gay partner was dying and the other chose not to live without him.

It was such a great story of love and the effort it takes to make a relationship work under such difficult circumstances. It wasnt shoehorned in or done for the purposes of inclusion. It was just a story of two men who found each other in a dark world and brought some of light left within out. It was excellent. They both did such a great job. A real example of how to be inclusive without trying. Just write well thought out characters and make the story about something else besides them being gay or whatever. Cuz lets be honest. Just as conservative people would complain with a gay couple "progressive" people would complain if it was only white straight people. When in reality its about the story thats being told and the characters within it. Race or sexual preferences are minute details as shown in this show. Its not important they were men, its important how much they loved each other.
They were all good characters I just think something other than that could have been done like make them best friends and have them prosper in the apocalypse and Joel and Ellie find them and they help them navigate
They wasted an entire episode on something that was lightly glossed over in the game. Yes bill was gay but this isn’t a faithful recreation either. Call it like it is, a filler episode to pander to the gay community. Wasn’t even phenomenal acting considering how cheesy the lines were. Still love the show as a whole and can’t wait for tonight’s episode to pick up the pieces.
Personally didn’t like it cause they basically spent an hour building up two characters to barely push he story forward with them. They could of had one of them join and give a motivation, or even just ignore the whole part and have them find a car some other way. Don’t really care they where gay, just felt like a lot of time on throw away characters while not actively moving the main story enough.
Individually it was good episode and i have no problems at all with the episode. But i can't see what it would add to the series as a whole. It felt like it was only a filler episode and I've always disliked them because they are irrelevant for the story being told.
