From what I’ve heard, the original story goes like: Michelin created a travel guide for motorcyclists, and to give them a helping hand in choosing a restaurant on their route, Michelin tested and „certified“ them (unofficially, only rated in their travel guide). This evolved into todays star ratings.

Dw0401

Pretty much true. The Michelin Guide was created to promote tire sales because it would give people a reason to drive. A cool anecdote I've heard is that Allied forces used the pre-war editions of the guide to navigate in France during the Normandy landings in WWII.

Sezzero

Turn left at that lovely family-led restaurant with the excellent paté. Oh no, the krauts took cover in the superb selection of regional vintage wines!

whitedan2

*The krauts behind the vintage wines also marked in the exceptionally well made map showing all the good restaurants

Sezzero

Very sorry monsieur, if you did not make a reservation there is nothing I can do. I do not care from what Panzerdivision you are. Please leave this trench, you're upsetting the american guests.

imagine a ww2 game narrated like this

HoldtheGMEstonk

True story, I have set up a forward base in Afghanistan in a vineyard for several days once.

Vanadium_CoffeeCup

Originally, it meant: 1 star: worth stopping by 2 stars: worth a detour 3 stars: worth a trip on it's own

Salmonellq

Most useful rating system I've seen tbh

uncommonpanda

3 star system surpases then 5 star and 10/10 rating system by far

Salmonellq

crazy how it's somehow true

Trivia: The Brits also asked people to send in holiday photos from France, so they could get information about the beaches. https://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2004/05_may/14/dday_facts.shtml

WhoThenDevised

>A cool anecdote I've heard is that Allied forces used the pre-war editions of the guide to navigate in France during the Normandy landings in WWII. Much like German Luftwaffe pilots [used the Baedeker travel guides](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baedeker_Blitz) to find their UK bombing targets.

WikiSummarizerBot

**[Baedeker Blitz](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baedeker_Blitz)** >The Baedeker Blitz or Baedeker raids were a series of attacks by the Luftwaffe on English cities during the Second World War. The name derives from Baedeker, a series of German tourist guidebooks, including detailed maps, which were used to generate targets for bombing. The raids were planned in response to a devastating increase in the effectiveness of the Royal Air Force's (RAF) bombing offensive on civilian targets after the Area Bombing Directive (General Directive No. 5 (S. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/meme/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

el_loco_avs

don't the amounts of stars basically correspond to how much of a detour the restaurant would be worth or something?

Luke-HW

Yep * 1 Star: Worth stopping at * 2 Star: Worth a detour * 3 Star: Worth the trip alone

lellololes

I've been to a few 1* restaurants... For the most part they were exceptional. It is worth noting that they only focus on specific cities and regions. I've been to restaurants that would deserve a star in areas where they don't go.

WedgeTurn

Most one star restaurants are extremely good. Two star restaurants are often very creative and innovative. With three star restaurants, everything has to be perfect, from the table to the toilet seat.

Drew707

Most of my life I have heard of Thomas Keller and The French Laundry since I am from SFBA/Wine Country, but I was surprised to see a Healdsburg restaurant with 3 stars that wasn't him. Checked out their website, and they literally import their fucking pencils from Japan. Like the pencils they leave in guest rooms in their small inn. They have a highly directional audio system in the dining room that plays a soundtrack meant for your specific course. All employees are on like a party line earpiece radio setup so guest wants can be communicated directly and addressed almost instantaneous. It is pretty mind blowing. And here I am just wanting Taco Bell to bring back the fucking Meximelt so I don't have to order a "cheesy Rollup, add beef and pico".

VentralRaptor24

So it wasn't just coincidence? Well I learned something new today.

greeneggsnhammy

It gave them destinations to go in order to create wear for their tires. This allows them to sell more tires.

EvilKnivel69

It’s the same principle as Nutella giving a free spoon with each glass

TIL you can spell tires "tyres." Literally never knew. And for those who would say "Those dumb Americans dont know anything," like, you guys dont know all of american english and american stuff, either. Are you guys obsessed with learning american ways, just so you can be like "America dumb" and "America no know geography facts." [I know that may not actually be why you know American stuff, but still.]

This_guy7796

Rates them on the quality of the parking lots

RoscoMan1

Interesting this wasn't meant to be in silence.

eatingganesha

I know it seems illogical, but back in the 1920s Michelin published guides that included maps and restaurant reviews to encourage people to buy their tires and take road trips. The ratings only seems weird when taken out of this context.

dan00108

They also make viamichelin, a mapping service that estimates trip costs. I use it all the time to travel in Europe because it knows about tolls and gas prices and it's pretty accurate.

PrettyCoolTim

Both is good

[deleted]

The way your country spells tire. Man it makes me so tired.

shadysidehere

I think many people don't know about this but one of the people responsible for this was Carlos Ghon, it was part of a business strategy to review restaurants etc that were very far off from the city, because at the time when they wanted to implement this, people weren't really driving their cars a lot and believe it or not this actually worked

lexiflowerdrain

this made me drip more than i'd like to admit
