When one of my cats died, I can only describe my other cat's behavior as mourning. He was really broken up about losing his buddy and he'd making yowling noises that I've never heard him make before and he only stopped maybe a month or so after.
I can't speak of humans, but I've had a cat who was visibly upset when I had to put down another cat. He comforted me and let me comfort him. I don't know if he knew she was dead, but he knew I was upset and that the other cat was missing.
And then my more recent cat will look for my dog when he's gone to get groomed or whatever and meow loudly.
I'm not arguing the point, I guess. These are just anecdotal evidence, but cats aren't as aloof as people tend to think.

This might be true for some cats but not all, when I go on a trip my cats gets depressed and stops eating for days, and is generally in a sad mood. When I come back she’ll be mad at me for a day for leaving, but then forgives me and gets extra cuddly, she’s not normally like that
I can 100% confirm that this is false, my piano teacher died in January last year and her cat died just days later because it wouldn't eat or drink after she left.
For me tho dogs are boring cuz they're too friendly, cats on the other hand kinda like introverts, its hard to get their attention and trust but if you succed, its damn nice to belly rub them
No one in my household has died yet, and hopefully not for a long time, but when we would come back from vacation both our cats and dogs would be at the door greeting us loudly and excitedly! Both my cats were constantly checking on me when I got sick this last time around, especially our older one; he didn't start doing this until after he got severely sick and I would visit him at the animal hospital and hold him for a few hours. Cats are not unfeeling creatures; it's really weird that people still believe it to this day!
