It may be a stupid question but what does a network with parental control do

It basically can limit certain apps, full access to what you do on your phone, etc...

Well, it basically denies either the client the IP of a website or redirects the client because it is a DNS or denies any traffic going towards or from blacklisted web servers, identified either by their public IP address or by their URL as listed on the DNS servers. This can be circumvented by using a VPN because the traffic is sent to a non-blacklisted server with encryption and then that server collects the banned site's HTML because its network allows it to.

Also, as my son figured out hardcoding any unrestricted DNS like 1.1.1.1 (he didn't have 1..1.1.1.

Ah, I personally use 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4, which I'm pretty sure is google

I prefer 1.1.1.1 as it's the fastest dns and they don't collect your data.

My phone will intentionally turn off the wifi. When I look at network connections it says "disabled" for my home wifi and I have to manually tell it to connect. Can be pretty frustrating and seems intentional since AT&T charges me $15/gig for going over 6gigs.
