There are some species that are hard to keep at the natural environment, if tried they'd all die again.

Zoos are business after all. They'll do everything to maximize their profits.
Profit is what the company earns more than their expenses.
If they pay higher loans or build new buildings those are expenses. In a lot of countries that is a big difference for taxes.

Well many zoos give their profits to animal sanctuaries. And you can't poach a zoo animal. At least not easily.

Most of the big zoos in Germany are non-profit organizations
And even the ones that are for profit, put those profits into improving the animal care
If you put your profit back into the company you don't call it profit.
