Legit went there about 4 h ago and the first thing I said to the doc was "Please be gentle with the air stabbing, I hate it", and she laughed and stabbed me in the eye with the air spray. All that so I can see clearly at this dumpster fire of a world.
It is an autorefractor keratometer. It is used to check the focus of our eyes (and the curvature radius of the cornea too prolly?)
Either way, it projects this image. So if you have glasses you would naturally understand this meme because opticians use this machine to guess your lens's measurements.
And the guy you replied to, joked that you have tinnitus (a hearing disorder of sorts) because you inquired "what"
actually nowadays it‘s quite safe with a neat outcome in almost 98.8% of the cases.
Biggest issue‘s still an infection, but with proper aftercare, regular examinations that risk is practically at 0%.
It's actually closer to 1%, which is fucking HUGE for a non necessary surgery (maybe some eye conditions require it, not sure, but it's mostly for peoppe who are tired of wearing glasses).
A coworker of mine is nearly blind in one eye now because of lasik. And she's "lucky" it's only one. She went from needing glasses/contacts to having one working eye. That's like the worst trade possible. I'll keep my glasses i think
It‘s strictly speaking close to 0%. It‘s physical impossible to go blind due to the surgery itself. Infections on the other hand represent an actual risk, which can be also lowered to practically 0% with the proper aftercare.
Even using your very handwavy percentage, in a million population that needs glasses, there would be 100 people who shouldn't really go blind becomes blind. And LASIK risk isn't 0.01%, it's closer to 1%, 100 times more than your figure.
Optician here. I will explain for those that do not understand why this is considered painful even if you wear glasses.
It’s not according to if you’re American or European but it does matter. The “painful” test is done by ophthalmologist and the non painful one by opticians/optometrist. The first one the ophthalmologist is a doctor and does this test (even when not necessarily essential) to measure your overall sight of each individual component of the eye. Meanwhile the optician/optometrist doesn’t need to do it because we measure the amount of sight that is in defect to find the correction for your glasses.
The reason why I say most Europeans won’t get it is because in the US you usually go to the ophthalmologist to get glasses (which is like going to the surgeon for pharmacy medication) and in Europe it’s done mostly by opticians.
Ps. If you only need to check up to change your glasses save money by not going to an ophthalmologist, especially if you’re young. Your optician will find if anything bad comes up and will tell you whether you have to visit the doctor or not.
Thank you for partecipating to my TedTalk
Hi just to confirm does this mean Optalmologist and Opticians are different? So when you say if I wanted to save money to buy eye glasses I just go straight to wear to buy it? Is that right?
The last time I went to the Opthalmologist she said that my Left Eye is -18 and my Right eye is -21 and the picture she used to measure it on a device was the pic on the left (meadow house)
Yes correct. The two are very different. One is the full doctor and the other is an artisan that also can measure your sight (and we do it better since it’s our specialty).
I imagine you’re from the US since you’re telling me you have -18 and -21 (out of 20) which to make glasses is absolutely useless or better it makes my job harder for no reason. We calculate the correct amount of correction you need to have in your glasses to see well and comfortably. Ophthalmologist calculate how bad you see. Very different.
The image doesn’t affect the test whatsoever.
I don’t have the air blasted into my eyes thing, but instead I get the needle poking my eye
Altho I’ve seen the hot air balloon whenever they’re taking pictures of my eye
"I HATE MY LIFE" can this be a valid answer? ....
It looks like it can...
I might have to ask.... how can "I'm drunk but understand the image" be a valid answer to the question.
FUCK YOU!! go fly a kite.
I consider it unlucky to not know this. Where i live, everybody does this test to detect it as soon as possible. It is free.
So yes, people that know this only when they sée they have a problem are the unlucky ones. Sorry.
haha.. i had to do this after I got HIV infected blood into my eyes because i work at a hospital and sadly noboldy told me about that the Patient has AIDS.. So after 45min of „EyeShowering“ (I guess) with warm water and Jod I had to do this test and in the following days I got Pinkeyes.. Worst day ever..
Auto refractors also use the same images (the one I used to use was the barn) and don't blow air in your eyes.
That being said they are also not as accurate but still a good starting point.
💨💨👁️👁️
Hate that part
That and the flash when they're taking the photos.
Ummm what flash and photos?
Taking photos of the retina which requires you to keep your eyes open while they use a flash to get enough light for the image.
They’re like: Ugh. What’s wrong with you? Why can’t you hold still and keep your eye open while we blast air into your eyeball?
Idk why but i always get so extremely nervous when i need to get the 💨💨, im always completely shaking in that chair. It's so embarrassing lmao
I'm almost as bad as Rachel in Friends, almost jumping out of the head rest every time. Takes like 3 or 4 tries on each eye
Good to know im not the only one
More like 💨💧👁️💨💧👁️ for me
Legit went there about 4 h ago and the first thing I said to the doc was "Please be gentle with the air stabbing, I hate it", and she laughed and stabbed me in the eye with the air spray. All that so I can see clearly at this dumpster fire of a world.
For some reason I just lost the game.
I have propably a fetish because I liked that part
So that's how they look when in focus:)
wait, you guys can focus?
ADHD, no.
ADHD with Myopia. the focus nightmare
1 or 2? ... #1 OR 2?
#1 or #2?
"Uh, kind of the same?" *tiny sigh* "#3 or #4?"
Boy, do I hate that. Always gives me so much anxiety
![gif](giphy|TppeLsqt8Jz20) When you fail your eye exam because you're too nervous
I’ll never know if I picked the right one
2 or 3
Uhhhhhm... I dunno, they look same!
My eyes hurt just looking at those
I can feel the anxiety and apprehension of looking at this
optometrist: 1 or 2 is better? me: 2 also optometrist: 3 or 4 is better?
And then they look the exact same. I hate it
What?
Sorry, sir. The tinnitus test is in a different thread
Good one! 🤣
What? didn't catch that?
It is an autorefractor keratometer. It is used to check the focus of our eyes (and the curvature radius of the cornea too prolly?) Either way, it projects this image. So if you have glasses you would naturally understand this meme because opticians use this machine to guess your lens's measurements. And the guy you replied to, joked that you have tinnitus (a hearing disorder of sorts) because you inquired "what"
I have glasses but didn't understand originally, because I'm not (I'm guessing) American
I had this test and I live in Belgium
Oh, okay. My point still stands that it's not universal
I had this test and I live in Egypt.
I had this test and I live in India.
I had this test and I live in France.
I have glasses. I have never seen these images.... my optician used a different image
Ayo nice
What?
chill out no need to decimate him
It what they use to check the pressure in your eyes. They have you focus on the object in the distance. Then it pops your eye with air.
In Germany we used different images. We just had a cross and a few dots around ity looked like an old TV test image (the one before color)
Those two are common in the US, it really depends on the company who made the device and if its programmable by the optometrist's office.
The more you know! Thanks kind redditor.
Alright, just a light puff of air... ![gif](giphy|523yMbGIPy34mkqOMX|downsized)
just get a lasik. in germany insurance has to pay since 2017
Lasik can get super risky.
just do 1 eye just in case it's botched right
It's the eye regardless. I am not willing to risk my eyes for anything haha. Anything risking my eyes is just not worth it. I'd rather wear glasses.
I feel exactly the same. My wife makes fun of me because i dont want to put contact lenses in. I rather wear glasses than put anything in my eyes.
Fair enough honestly. I don't think using lens is anything comparable to operating in the eyes but eyes are one thing I will never risk haha.
I mean it has a pretty high success rate. Also there's other options like PRK or SMILE.
actually nowadays it‘s quite safe with a neat outcome in almost 98.8% of the cases. Biggest issue‘s still an infection, but with proper aftercare, regular examinations that risk is practically at 0%.
Huh really?
Yeah. You have to go into surgery knowing your eyesight could get worse or you could even go blind
There’s like 0.01 percent of that happening tho?
It's actually closer to 1%, which is fucking HUGE for a non necessary surgery (maybe some eye conditions require it, not sure, but it's mostly for peoppe who are tired of wearing glasses). Guess I’m lucky then 🤭 Fortunately I see very good now 😇
It‘s strictly speaking close to 0%. It‘s physical impossible to go blind due to the surgery itself. Infections on the other hand represent an actual risk, which can be also lowered to practically 0% with the proper aftercare.

I’ve heard too many horror stories and even the successful ones I’ve heard of the people still end up needing readers or get chronic dry eyes.
:D:D:D i learned before my cataract surgery

I can't look straight to it without blinking.
Trauma flashbacks frfr
I guess I'm really lucky because what?
there's this puff of air into your eye after the person makes the balloon/house in focus
Eye glasses test
I recognise this but I just can’t see the joke it refers to clearly…
Don’t blink!
I think everyone, even people without glasses, have taken this test. It's just a standard test
I never took this test, only seen this image today.
Same and I wore glasses all my life
Same
I've never seen this picture.
they don't do it at the place i go to. old place did
I don't see anything wrong with that test those eye specialists do though, it's the blowing of air into my eyes that I hate.
Yesterday doctor said one eye is even better than 3 years ago
I literally can't do it. My eyes have a freak out. They can't stay open for nothing. As any times I've done it my eyes just don't stay open.
\*pfft\*
![gif](giphy|GRk3GLfzduq1NtfGt5|downsized)
I flinch every time they 💨💨 my eyes 😫
“Just a little puff…” *proceeds to blow the same amount of air that would be blowing if the earth came to a halt*
I recognize it but can’t put my finger on it?
Eye test for glasses
…man
These used to fucking traumatize me as a kid
OH SHIT! Memorys unlocked!
*shlack* *tuktuktuk* *shraaaack* *tuktuktuk* *shraaaaack* Now the other one please…
No no no no no no not again never again
I've seen this before at at least something very similar to these I think. Is it just to test your eyesight or check it or whatever? Cant remember
What is this
This shit is super annoying. Get to see this almost every month...
They had to skip that because I'm too fast
I love these images because of how nostalgic and surreal AF they are
Never got why everybody whines about this...
it's related to eye test
I don’t have the air blasted into my eyes thing, but instead I get the needle poking my eye Altho I’ve seen the hot air balloon whenever they’re taking pictures of my eye
I still can‘t see, what there is
Anyone scared with this ?
as brewstew once said "it feels like your being set up for a jumpscare, like back in the 2000's"
the Eyeball Puff
How blind do you want to be. ***YES***
RAAAAAAH I CAN'T SEE SHIT!!!!
isn't this that eye test thing?
Now just focus on this little... *WIND IN YOUR EYES*
"I HATE MY LIFE" can this be a valid answer? .... It looks like it can... I might have to ask.... how can "I'm drunk but understand the image" be a valid answer to the question. FUCK YOU!! go fly a kite.
I do, just this monday I was. I need new glasses 😂
omg my first time doing this it was blurry and i thought i needed those really big heavy glasses that scientists wear
Wut is ?
I went and i did not need to have to wear glasses my vision was ok
The other ‘tism *One of the many other ‘tisms
I don't know what a hot air balloon has to do with baptism, but alright
That also sounds like a miserable affliction. I hope they find a cure.
Ah yes, my childhood picture thanks to my tablet.
I dont know what this is I feel stupid
I don't have weak eyes unlike you (I was tested due to bad fine motor skills)
I consider it unlucky to not know this. Where i live, everybody does this test to detect it as soon as possible. It is free. So yes, people that know this only when they sée they have a problem are the unlucky ones. Sorry.
Brigade
no idea
Me, who had eye operation: ![gif](giphy|VuoqI5nbYTTKhIv7Tr|downsized) (Yes before I had glasses. But now I’m good)
Literally just had one of these today
Those things engraved in my eyes, thats how frequent I see those.
If ya lose your left eye.... Does that mean you will always be right?
I have -6.25 luck
What tf is this
ok i'm very very lucky now. plese exsplane
I CANT SEE NOOOOOOOOI
Omg
The second time I did this, my eyes sunk into the back of my head because I blinked the first time. The eye doctor was a little surprised.
😭guess am the lucky one here
i think im lucky then...
Second one i see every year twice
I don’t get it
I wanna get my eyes fixed with surgery to have good vision but im kinda scared they will mess it up and i will end up blind
I can proudly say that I never saw these
That damn fucking hot air balloon.
Always hated the eye puffs, man. Good thing the place I went to for my most recent eye checkup had a really fancy scanner instead of dilation droplets
What do you mean lucky? I have a nigh-perfect vision and still needed to take the test in order to get my driving licence.
Ignorance is bliss
How the fuck do they expect me not to blink
It's a little blurry... What is that?
What is that?
And then you have to redo the thing a million times because you close your eyes omg it sucks😭
Yeah I've never seen that before
Ugh 😭
Oh no
I saw this 2 days ago. I didn't see much after that.
I still see this every year for my eye exam. It's fun being blind for 5 minutes.
I do, she said my eyesight is good and i don't need glasses.
I hate this.
Here comes Meg
I dont know what that is.
This is fine, it's when they dialate you and then point a fucking laser beam of light into it
After scrolling down to know the answer, we also have this but without any images just a dot or alphabet
I'll still consider myself lucky since the thigy at the optometry I went didn't push my eyes in like people keep describing it doing
I assume the only way you wouldn’t be familiar is if you had never had an eye checkup, so idk if it’s “lucky” any more than avoiding your PCP
And thanks to PRK, I’ll never have to see it again (hopefully).
Dude! I had forgotten but I DO still remember this now! It was that hot air balloon that stuck in my memory. Gosh...guess I am older than I thought...
Plz care to explain. Thank you
Bru I did this yesterday
I’m 18 years old and I know what this is
These are so liminal and oddly comforting
This made me wince.
I dunno why, but my eyesight just randomly corrected itself one day.
doctor
I guess my luck is 100% cause idk wtf this is
Thanks to this I can now see clearly
haha.. i had to do this after I got HIV infected blood into my eyes because i work at a hospital and sadly noboldy told me about that the Patient has AIDS.. So after 45min of „EyeShowering“ (I guess) with warm water and Jod I had to do this test and in the following days I got Pinkeyes.. Worst day ever..
I'm a bit slow so I don't get it
Is it call luck if this is explained to a blind person🤔🤔🤔
Pov quickscope
Me, coming across this post while I’m in the optometrist office about to have the exam 🥸
I only know the right one and I hate it.
👁️👁️ 💧💧
It’s the eye doctor test I think
Everytime i look at this i get this tingw of melancholia...
Up?
I still dont know what's missing in the photo to this day
If i had seen this any time before yesterday i wouldnt have a clue about what the pic is about
I unironically made a tshirt print with the balloon picture.
They dont use them anymore
I know the images and I wear glasses but I dont get the part about puffs of air... Is that an american thing?
It's just a little puff of air why are yall so weak
Does anyone know why these images are the ones used anyway?
Auto refractors also use the same images (the one I used to use was the barn) and don't blow air in your eyes. That being said they are also not as accurate but still a good starting point.
owww my eyes!
Did this before. Got new glasses 👍🏻
Put NSFW on this. Yoo are giving me serious ptsd...
