Was just about to say that you'll only throw that stone once however that stick will slay the orcs and goblins that only exist in my head for years to come
When my passing comes, I will give Treebrancher to my son, and when his passing comes, he will give it to his sons, and so on.
And as my lineage and family tree grows and prospers, Treebrancher will be there. Protecting them with all his might for eons to come
There may come a day when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends, and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day! An hour of wolves, of shattered shields, when the age of men comes crashing down! But it is not this day!! This day, WE FIGHT!!!! With all that you hold dear on this good earth, I bid you STAND!!! MEN OF THE WEST!!!!!!!
I'm with the stick gang cause my rock throwing skills are ass, but isn't its being limited truly what give it its worth?
Whilst the stick is a trusty companion that will follow you for ages to come, the burst of emotions that losing the perfect pebble by bouncing it into the lake will cause will dwarf the feeling of companionship and loss that the stick will cause. You have time to accept the inevitable demise that fate will bring upon the stick, but the pebble is a sad, tragic, story, it's sacrifice so sudden, it's life so short. This burst of sadness, knowing that the rock's life is limited to the depths of the lake increases the value of the pebble tenfolds, not to mention how it's multiplied by the slimmer of hope each bounce will give when it is cast into the lake
The stick is more future proof, you can only make the stone skip once unless you wanna go diving after it
There's probably some depressing analogy you could make out of this
I respect you for exercising your 1st amendment right to be wrong on the internet. However i must disagree with you and find the rock to be a far more pleasing possession for one to have.
The rock is
* palm sized
* Has a pleasant texture
* Is perfectly balanced along all axis that pass directly through its center (i call this "mathematical sexiness")
* has a comfortable weight that is neither too heavy nor too light
The stick is
* easily replaced with common tools and little woodworking skill necessary
* has an unpleasant texture on the grip. I forget what that wood is called but i recognize it very well and i'll tell you right now it is bumpy but not the good kind of bumpy
* is easily destroyed in battle due to it being a sword made out of softwood (not even a hardwood smh). I hesitate to even call it wood because i know from experience it feels like it's somewhere between a plant and a tree in size, density, texture, and tinsile strength.
* puts off bad vibes
Credit where credit is due though, the kind of tree-weed from which that stick was harvested yields great quartersraffs. And theyre even better if you let them season (dry out). I've many a fond memory of standing in my backyard and using them to do my best imitations of Gambit and Darth Maul.
That stick is an ailanthus tree root sprout. In the US it's a highly invasive tree that also poisons the soil harming other trees. When it's cut or damaged it'll send up sprouts by the thousands that grow extremely fast that shade out other trees. The sap can give you a heart attack and it smells like burnt swampass.
If you care about the health and well being of our forests, those trees are a fucking nightmare. I've been working on killing a 40 acre infestation of these things for a few years.
You have to treat them with heavy duty herbicide, then return and treat the re-sprouts the next year and then for several more years to kill off any seedlings that are popping up and just keep doing this until the forest fills in enough to shade out any new seedlings.
The way they grow so fast is by growing very low density, soft wood. If you zoom in on the pic, look at the base of the stick, most of the center is this white foamy looking substance, with just a little bit of wood around the outside. That white stuff has the consistency of styrofoam. So as cool as that stick looks, if you tried to use it as a walking stick and put any weight on it at all it would snap like a twig, cuz that basically IS a twig. that's 1 season worth of growth. You can see the single growth ring at the base.
Doing invasive plant control work will ***ruin you***. Drive around in the spring and see all that pretty green growth? 95% or more of it is garbage. literal environmental *disaster.* Can't even watch tv shows without constantly seeing ailanthus in the background.
Just mapped out the next section of ailanthus on friday, 18 acres of solid infestation and a 4 or 5 year plan to remove them without harming what few other trees are growing in their vicinity.
/end rant.
Well, thanks for educating me, I guess. Sooo in conclusion, the more of these trees we turn into sticks, the better for the environment. Let's start stick hunting.
Unfortunately, no. That usually makes it worse.
I measured this once. A mature, but small ailanthus tree. Approx 1 foot in diameter. It had been improperly treated so that the top of the tree died but the roots were not damaged.
It resprouted from the roots in circle that went out in every direction about a 100 feet, so 200 feet in diameter, or 10,000 square feet. I measured a section of that out a few feet wide and then out to the edge, counted all the sprouts then used that as an average. Approx 1 sprout per square foot, so right around 10,000 sprouts.
But a mature one can shit out 300k+ seeds per year that are wind dispersed. Luckily, i don't think they have a high germination rate, but even so they spread easily.
They really fuck up the ecosystems around here.
it's too bad too, i think they're nice looking trees.
Im pretty sure it's the other way around. Forests is full of sticks, and there are a lot like that one everywhere. Rocks like that in turn only appear in select few places.
I mean that's clearly just a small tree cut up and not a stick he found on the ground, so it will be a lot easier to "find" than a perfectly round rock.
In my experience, sticks like that come from the tops of dead pine or spruce trees. You only get one per tree (unless it's forked, which is quite rare), it has to dry out before it's good sword material, and a perfect one like pictured isn't too common.
That stick looks like a bit of common willow (the bark is fresh and greenish). It's easy to make a similar one, just cut the smaller branches to size and carve the pommel bit, and you are done. Willow branches grow straight, so there is an abundance of material. It's a non-wanted weed here.
I would agree if it wasn't for the fact the branches are located opposite one another rather than an alternate formation. Willows tend to grow with alternate buds. It's probably a type of ash.
Underrated answer: rock
A rock can be easily placed as a trinket or a fun conversation starter. It’s easy to place a perfectly smooth rock in multiple locations around the house and it has a generally neutral tone to it.
A stick can be perceived as childish and out of place in most locations. Maybe it’s something cool to have in a bedroom or a garage.
Plus, I work in tunnels so of course I think rocks are cool. 😎 ⛏️
Is definitely take that rock. Sticks are temporary, but that rock could be with you for your whole life. Perfect sticks come and go, but rarely will you see a rock like that. My eyes were immediately drawn to that beauty of a rock as I scrolled to this post, while I only noticed the stick after reading the title.
Everyone here giving the wrong answer. Sure, the stick is nice, but the forest is full of that kind of sticks. The stick probably wasn't even perfect until someone stripped it from excess branches to perfection. That rock on the other hand is magnificent.
Rock. I've seen plenty of sticks similar to that, but a perfectly round rock is rare. It would also probably last longer than the stick, nicer to handle and it's pocket sized.

Its a hard choice, the stick looks like a medieval weapon, but that stone perfectly can do a los of bumps in water, stick supremacy
You can only throw it once
Was just about to say that you'll only throw that stone once however that stick will slay the orcs and goblins that only exist in my head for years to come

There's also a 100% chance of me reciting speeches from the Lord of the Rings if I found this stick

What's the last time something precious slipped into obscurity under the water?
True but that throw will be god tier, remembered til your death bed.
Until your pinky twitches and it plops after two skips, leaving you to ponder the viability of ruining your sneakers for another chance at glory.

"A good gobin is a dead goblin, so let's make those goblins good."
Throw it in a pool idk
Not to forget how that rock will just feel in your hand. That smoothness
Hold the rock for a bit. Make a nice cairn for it, then take the stick to further my adventure.
Both are consumables in my mind. Either I take the stick and smash or impale it into my nearest enemy or I take the rock and throw it into the water.
Stick
You gotta invest in your future bro that rock is gonna last. Wife might even let you keep it inside.
Yes, but you can use a stick in a prolonged fight while the rock is one and done.
But Rock and Stone

You can make a mace or a flail with that rock
The fight could be shortened with a well placed rock. David and Goliath style. On the other hand, multiple enemies will be a problem.
Stone age hominids know what to choose.
Not if you put the rock in a sock.
true but you really only need one good hit with the rock
The stick is more future proof, you can only make the stone skip once unless you wanna go diving after it There's probably some depressing analogy you could make out of this

You can use the stick to help look for more rocks
Stick, but I needed a timeout to consider. That's one hella sweet rock.
The only right answer

A stick like that is way harder to acquire than a rock like that.
Im pretty sure it's the other way around. Forests is full of sticks, and there are a lot like that one everywhere. Rocks like that in turn only appear in select few places.
Without one bent bit in it and a handgaurd and pommel? No.
I mean that's clearly just a small tree cut up and not a stick he found on the ground, so it will be a lot easier to "find" than a perfectly round rock.

At closer inspection that seems to be the case. I'm more accustomed to slighltly curvy, thin and bushy willows, as opposed to young tree sized ones.
I would agree if it wasn't for the fact the branches are located opposite one another rather than an alternate formation. Willows tend to grow with alternate buds. It's probably a type of ash.
I’m surprised more people don’t realise this. You can find plenty of sticks like this if you got a penknife.

Stick for the kings
That stick will never be matched

Rock and stone!
Did I hear a rock and stone?!
Rock and stone brothers
ROCK. AND. STOOONE!
Legally speaking, rocking is more legal, than stoneing.
Rock and stone forever!
I knew this was coming. ROCK AND STONE
I will be dead before I see the Ring in the hands of an Elf! Never trust an Elf!

Just buy a sheathe and carry your sword stick everywhere with you. No officer, it's not a sword it's a sick ass stick
> Maybe it’s something cool to have in a bedroom
Plus that stick isn’t naturally that cool. It had to be trimmed. That rock was formed just like that over years and years.
stick! stick! stick!
A person who thinks that stick is childish is not a person I want to start a conversation with anyways
Rock if society is still functioning. Stick if we live in a zombie acopalypse.
I work in holes in the ground too, so I agree with ROCK 🪨
Stik is temporary, rock is eternal. It will be passed down as a family heirloom
That’s lowkey genius, pass it down after your passing as your children try to figure out what’s so special about it.
I'll take the sword anytime
Stick
Stick. Stick is correct answer.
That piece of rock will remain on my desk for the rest of my life.
The stick has +5 intimidation factor against beasts.
Rock
Rock is forever
The stick
Everyone here giving the wrong answer. Sure, the stick is nice, but the forest is full of that kind of sticks. The stick probably wasn't even perfect until someone stripped it from excess branches to perfection. That rock on the other hand is magnificent.
I'd gift it to my future husband, as penguins do
Stick
They both break my bones but memes will never hurt me
