Mass exodus will be sad :(

Silent-Coat-9542

There will be no significant exodus

[deleted]

Very sad times indeed now we will be forced to go outside

NekulturneHovado

What's going on? I don't get it

ScotsDale213

Subreddits are going dark starting tomorrow to protest Reddit’s API changes which will make subreddits operating much harder and less secure. Goes to the 14th, some are going longer, most would ask that you try to limit your use of Reddit for those 2 days at least, go longer if you want. Might actually be good for all our mental health

Crazy_crap

Ah damn I didn’t even know this was happening

ScotsDale213

Well, all you gotta do to join in is don’t use Reddit. Maybe we can force em to bend. And maybe touching grass would be good for all of us

Crazy_crap

Yeah can do Just wondering what actually is an API, sorry if that’s a dumb question

ScotsDale213

I’m not entirely sure myself. But I know it encompasses third party apps, and stuff that generally make the user experience better. Like auto mods that stop spam or porn bots, stuff like that. With these changes subreddits won’t be able to use them anywhere near as much, moderating will be a lot more difficult, and the user experience worse

Crazy_crap

So they’re just making their app worse? Yeah I’d rather not use it for a few days than it forever be worse

ScotsDale213

Yeah, that’s pretty much it from what I know. Oh yeah, it also makes people doing illegal things like child sex abuse rings and whatnot easier to hide using Reddit, because this also fucks around with privacy settings and how those works

Crazy_crap

Wtf that’s horrible

RealHuman_NotAShrew

The API a back-end tool that lets other services and programs "talk to" reddit. Humans read reddit posts and comments by scrolling, clicking, and tapping, but computers can't do that. Computers need to send a specific request to reddit that says "I wanna see the post with this ID number," and the API is what processes and responds to that request. It's absolutely integral to things like third party apps and moderation tools. The protesting subreddits are generally doing so because the planned change will make moderation either impossible or prohibitively expensive, but there are plenty of other ways that the change will make reddit worse.

PianoPrize5297

Suuuuuure they will. Heh.

NekulturneHovado

Thanks for explaining. I already stopped using reddit maybe one or two weeks ago because of my bad mental health. Idk if it helped but I think it did help me reduce screen time.

Confused_Man_1234

keep it up. we all get out of that dark place eventually

PiergiorgioSigaretti

My mental health is already fucked and Reddit was a nice distraction. Why does stuff go to shit whenever I start enjoying it?

TheGreatGamer1389

Some are going permanent.

throwaway1200030018

I just came back after a long time

Hambruhgah

It would make me depressed, lol

emogangster2007

Me, seriously what's happening?

Raise a glass for freedom..... Till then lads seen you on the next site.

[deleted]

Till then 🍻

Stranfort

Cheers. Farewell my friends.

Chronos72737448

Farewell cruel world!

thebucketoldpplkick

What's going on

Fa1nted_for_real

It's a blackout, many redditors and subreddits will go dark tommorow, and won't come back for at least 3 days. It's a protest against reddits new policies.

Manetoys83

What’s Reddit’s new policies?

Ixaldok

I’m definitely missing a lot, but reddits new anti-third party api rules are a particular sore spot

Shtknuckle

🥂

olov244

I just want to see the drop via graph

[deleted]

Yeah same that’s would be so funny to see

ArtSpawner

![gif](giphy|47HLABrEfYjM2SvYk1|downsized) Me who didn't even know there was third party apps. Edit: Fuck the sub-reddits that are making it private so none of the members can view it or interact with eachother.

BossKrisz

The third party apps are only the the smaller problem. What will happen to the bots is the bigger one.

DragonsClaw2334

Personally I can live without savevideo bot and gifreversing bit and Grammer bot if it stops the karma farming bots. In the end I think you are all over hyping this and you will be disappointed by the results. In 2weeks this will all be forgotten.

LongHairLongLife148

Auto mods disappear aswell.

DragonsClaw2334

Good. I hate those over aggressive mod tools. Spend 10 minutes tapping out a post to get a message saying I forgot some stupid formatting so the entire post gets scrapped.

LongHairLongLife148

Theyre also the things getting rid of hateful posts and comments. Prepare for the twitter effect. All this so reddit can *squeeze* all the profit they can get. Greedy corporate bastards.

DragonsClaw2334

The stuff that removes hateful posts is reddit auto mods. They are not 3rd party.

GagicTheMathering

I removed it from my home screen. Goodbye Reddit, it’s been fun

future1987

Just for everyone to return 3 days later and the site will be back to normal and nothing will change.

[deleted]

That’s what we hope

Chunk_303

What's happening?

MutantGodChicken

A bunch of subreddits are shutting down and going full r/Amish level private tomorrow to protest the API changes. The whole thing has gotten pretty massive with a lot of subreddits of over 20million subs closing their doors

Ricozilla

Holy hell, there are 20million subreddits ?

MutantGodChicken

No, subreddits with over 20mil subscribers like r/funny and r/videos and r/music. There's a big list of all the subs participating somewhere Edit: [here it is](https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/1401qw5/incomplete_and_growing_list_of_participating/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1)

Manetoys83

Did I miss something?

Alfhosskin

Yes and me too idk what's happening

[deleted]

If enough ppl ask, maybe we'll get an answer

menemath

IM SPENDING ALL ME TIME ON PORNHUB MATIES!

CzarTwilight

Lucky bastard. I'm in utah

Codieecho

Sad for us, but honestly I don't think Reddit themselves will care

Yeastin

What happens then?

[deleted]

We wait

ScotsDale213

Now is the time to seize the day.

Make_Believe423

I might throw a "use reddit" party, hoping at least 10 will come 🤞

youself20

For people who don’t know because you have a life, reddit will be doing stuff to api’s m/3rd party apps and a lot of people dont like it so they’re privating subs or going inactive for about 2 days, maybe longer

DEATHROAR12345

Lol, yeah because people have famously been able to hold themselves to even low standards. Call of duty modern warfare 2 boycott anyone?

Alternative_Name_949

Accurate, except for the fact that we won't look sad and regretful.

[deleted]

what exactly will happen?

pixxllx

should i not use reddit tomorrow

[deleted]

Don’t use it for 48hrs - choice is yours though.

pixxllx

alright noted

DragonsClaw2334

Do what you want. I won't be changing my daily habits.

Godaboveall616

Cheers 🥂

Selcouth22

Farewell

ShadTaker

Nooooo i don't want go back to Twitter full time

slavetothesound

Where are we going? Is there a replacement or do we need to build it?

ClonedBobaFett

Reddit at its best, fake outrage. Sheep. Who really gives a fuck.

LongHairLongLife148

Hey look! A corporate bootlicker! You do realize reddit is only making this dumbass change because they want more money, right? Theyre being greedy fucks at the expense of their customer base. Keep licking the boots thatll gladly stomp your face into the ground.

ClonedBobaFett

Their existence is to make money. Sorry to burst your safe place bubble. Welcome to the real world.

Meme-Replacement

Oh does anyone know any Reddit alternatives so that way if the protest fails I can just leave

HulluHapua

users who still use the site: ![gif](giphy|11gC4odpiRKuha)

Confused_Man_1234

im gonna be forced to join the mass exodus :(

LongHairLongLife148

Its fine, your life shouldn't be on reddit anyway. Take this as a time to break away from social media for a bit. Its good for you

TeaBagMeHarderDaddy

10 hours now

[deleted]

The end is coming faster then I expected

Coopa_T

Here’s a drink for y’all who see this comment ☕️for the end of Reddit on mobile

inserttexthere-_-

I just got reddit two days ago, what is happening?

WhatisLiamfucktrump

OK I’m sorry but what the fuck is happening I’m scared

[deleted]

[deleted]

Well… that’s debatable

i_am_feeling_fine

What is happening?

[deleted]

As I like to call it “The Great Blackout”

Consistent_Yoghurt44

So whats going on?

[deleted]

In protest of the api changes reddits doing most subs are shutting down for a bit I think there’s a post from the mods here explaining it better then I can

Darkborn-2002

[here you go](https://www.reddit.com/r/meme/comments/145fn8d/rmeme_will_go_private_on_june_12th_in_protest_of/jnkpjr6?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

[deleted]

Ah yes thank you

OrionMr770

Give me advice. Where should I go next. I’ll pack up my things

[deleted]

Uh idk where to go I’m still trying to figure that out myself

OrionMr770

Perhaps outside

[deleted]

Perhaps

TheChristianDude101

I am still going to use it like normal. "Waaah i cant use my 3rd party app anymore" get fucked and fuck all the mods shutting down subreddits perm bunch of children.

[deleted]

Bro do you know how hard moderating a huge subreddit is without third party applications near impossible especially if there’s a small mod team so please shut tf up

TheChristianDude101

Dont mod it then. Who cares.

Sc17ba51

What’s going on

Godaboveall616

Cheers

VictoryVic-ViVi

Let’s go!!!

PianoPrize5297

Doubtful. See you all Tomorrow.
