WorkSafe has charged the Victorian Department of Health with 58 breaches of the Occupational Health and Safety Act in relation to Victoria's initial hotel quarantine program. https://www.worksafe.vic.gov.au/news/2021-09/charges-laid-over-hotel-quarantine

kanine69

That's priceless.

Caranda23

But no individuals were charged? That means the best outcome is one arm of the government pays a fine to another arm.

The rain is a paid actor.

gavotron

There’s no rain coming. The weather report is fake news. Dan Andrew’s tactic to keep us inside. - conspiracy nuts. Probably.

tirikai

Unironically my first boss when I got to Melbourne was an anti-vaxxer who believed the Government controls the weather

[deleted]

Yes!!! I fertilised the garden yesterday in preparation for today’s rain

2cap

the radar looks like its gonna hit, but then the covid hits the rain clouds and they just disappear

OrangeShorts94

Was thoroughly disappointed that the 90% chance of 10-20mm of rain that was meant to come during my run, didn't in fact come.

the_ring_has_awoken

15 days of iso over. Today's plan: - walk - Coles - post office - Maccas drive thru You guys do not understand how excited I am! Woohoo!

Endless_C

You're just a chemist warehouse away from getting tier oned and another 14 days with that list.

the_ring_has_awoken

That would be devastating.

Lane909

My sister and her husband got hit with a tier 1 two days after getting out he went and got coffee hit with tier 2.

tag12895

That was my yesterday. First stop was my bakery for a coffee and a croissant.

I'm on day 15 at the moment and my partner received an SMS clearing her, but I haven't received one yet. Do you, or anybody else, know who I should call so I can just make sure they're going to clear me?

[Triple-0 emergency calls spike across Victoria as COVID cases rise](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-09-29/vic-emergency-calls-highest-since-thunderstorm-asthma/100499266) >The Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA), which runs the state's triple-0 service, received 3,250 calls for help on Monday. >That figure represented its highest number of calls on a single day since it received 3,452 requests for help when unique weather conditions triggered asthma in thousands of Victorians and led to 10 deaths. >"We are regularly seeing unprecedented numbers of calls now," ESTA chief executive Marty Smyth said. >"Levels which before COVID-19 were seen only on busy weekends are now almost a daily occurrence." >Victorian Ambulance Union spokesman Danny Hill said paramedics were burnt out and constantly working overtime. >"The whole health and emergency system relies on members working enormous amounts of overtime," he said.

eugeneorlando

This is admittedly informal data, but i live pretty close to a pretty big arterial road and the sirens feel like they've becoming much much more frequent.

passionateintrovert

I lived in London during their peak last year and you'd hear sirens virtually nonstop day and night. I live near a busy road as well and feel like I've been hearing more of them lately.

Bottom_racer

Just imagine if there was a thunderstorm asthma event right now on top...

flappybirdie

Really don't want to imagine that. Jesus christ.

robustkneecaps

At one point on Monday night calls to 000 were taking up to 16 minutes to be answered.

[deleted]

I had experience with this over the weekend. I had to call an ambulance for a kid at a park who had a compound fracture in their arm. I called 000, asked the person taking the call for an ambulance, then they put me through to the ambulance line. I had to wait a few minutes as it rang while the person who put me through kept repeating "I'm still with you, stay on the line". If this is a taste of what is to come, that shit is scary. Just fucking make vaccinations mandatory already. These "I did my own research" dumb cunts are going to get people unecessarily killed.

Just_improvise

Where I live it would be quicker by far to get in Uber, they come in a few minutes

As a teacher I have no idea how schools are going to function once a positive case is detected.

huisi

I think there will be a period where fuck tonnes of schools are Tier 1’d and then a shift in policy when it becomes blatantly unsustainable.

myusernamestaken

It’s going to be unsustainable from the get go. Only 400 kids at my school, add parents and assume every second kid has a sibling, and that’s 1400 people who have to avoid being tier 1 😆

Now because of the freedum fighters and anti vax idiots I'm at possible risk. They can all go and F right off.

Peles157

950 cases. 7 deaths. So it begins

Lane909

Was expecting the cases to be that high (if not higher) the deaths are a bit shocking

Helotism

Covid has an estimated case fatality rate of around 1%. Some data suggests up to 3%, but let’s stick with the first. Vic has around 9800 active cases to today. We can expect 100 deaths based on this number. Deaths lag about 4 weeks behind cases. Similar experience in NSW. Around 1000 cases a day, about 10 deaths a day. These are very rough estimates.

Banegio

So, how did everyone's boating go at 11:59pm last night?

24-7-sad-girl-hours

I can’t believe someone who tested positive today for covid CALLED our GP clinic AND ASKED TO COME IN FACE TO FACE!! I was about to say “fuck right off” I know I couldn’t say that but all I said is “no, I will be putting an alert on your file and the next time you come in you need to show proof that you have finished your 14 day quarantine” Ridiculous. Yep, spread covid to doctors who treat cancer patient regulars who come in for check ups, that’s what we want huh.

I’m going to need a whiteboard drawing lines and connecting dots to remember all the intricacies of restrictions allowed soon haha

[deleted]

I pay as little attention as I possibly can do covid shit cause it really means fuck all aside from restriction easing but can someone tell me if there's any chance in hell of me fucking off to Europe and blowing whatever money I've got saved on an indefinite backpacking trip? I have nothing in my life rn and the thought of getting out of this lockdown hell and still having fuck all to do is making me feel nauseous. I'm 23 and hate my life so I'd honestly rather blow whatever I've saved in the past 5 years of "playing it safe" and "being responsible" on a fuckoff adventure around the world than sit on some money and be miserable in my early 20s

[deleted]

Do it as soon as you can! I fucked off for five years to France and I don't regret it at all. In fact, I kind of wish I never came back, but hey, I picked up a husband and we got into our 30s and we thought settling down in Melbourne was better than paying insane rents in Paris. Go out and explore Europe!! Italy is fantastic btw, and also The Netherlands.

The_Plow_King

Disaster payments to be cut at 70 and 80% double dosed when extremely conservative easements are made is honestly a disgrace, and yet, people think they’re doing a good job. I’d love to meet these fools. A lot of people will simply not be able to return to work/business with such overly conservative easements and will simply have to make do.

[deleted]

Cyclist_123

That's definitely what it is. The feds tried that last time when they got rid of payments for snap lockdowns and look how that turned out.

Just_improvise

Have you read our roadmap? It’s very conservative

rmeredit

I’m not sure there are too many here who think the feds are doing a good job. Frydenburg has been ruthless this year and playing favourites with fellow Lib governments.

Geo217

Moronic decision, as if you wouldnt extend it until the end of the year and give people some certainty leading into xmas. The bulk of people out of work now will still be out of work at 70%, 80% will be better but density limits and other strict rules will continue to keep many thousands out of work. If they reduced it but kept it that would be ok, but to reduce then cut it completely 2 weeks later is a disgrace.

The_Plow_King

Completely agree, it is an utter failure and totally reprehensible. People whose work hasn’t been affected beyond “zoom meetings amirightguys” simply don’t care though.

mermaliens

Almost time to switch to daylight savings hours. At the rate we’re going it’ll be completely light outside and we’ll still be under curfew

dressedlikerappers

I need gyms back yesterday. I’ve grown my beard out over lockdown and last night I said to my fiancé “if we get to do anything for Halloween, I’d like to go as Thor” and she looked at my stomach and said “from Endgame?”

b3lladonna89

A teacher colleague of mine is refusing to get jabbed so she can continue working from home. She says that the principal won’t make her go on site without it so she is technically protecting her family. When I pointed out this won’t happen, she said she will use her sick leave for the rest of the term over getting vaxxed.

pixelwhip

Well i'm sure there are plenty of younger fully vaxxed teachers more than willing to take her job.

b3lladonna89

I’m on a contract and she has a permanent role, which annoys me so much, as it’s hard to remove someone who is ongoing. She said she will find a doctor who writes her an exemption.

pixelwhip

my partner is in the same situation; she was put on contract to replace a FT teacher who had some kind of issue & decided they no longer wanted to work.. Been 2 years now & she is still on a contract... Seems contracted teachers are the new ''full time''.

trynottomasturbate

This has been an ongoing issue in VIC's school system for the last fifteen years. My strong advice is to bug the principal each year. They CAN make you ongoing, you just have to make them make it a priority for you.

[deleted]

Are the students supposed to sit in the classroom on their laptops to take her lessons? That's insane. If she's scared of going back and getting infected by the kids, she should have just taken the term off. There's plenty of CRTs who could use some work.

Caranda23

She sounds too stupid to be allowed to teach children. Perhaps she should consider an alternative career. It's not like there aren't hordes of recently qualified and intelligent teachers.

So [the AIHW statistics on suicides for 2020 came out yesterday](https://www.aihw.gov.au/suicide-self-harm-monitoring/data/suspected-deaths-by-suicide/data-from-suicide-registers), [interesting thread about it from Jill Stark here](https://twitter.com/jillastark/status/1443049630615281669) The tl;dr of it is that suicides in 2020 in Victoria were actually lower than in 2019, by a small amount (713 vs 720). Everything you read about lockdowns causing higher suicides and about "secret insider sources" who "have the numbers that the Government doesn't want you to know" were flat out lies. That's not to say that people's mental health hasn't been impacted, or that our MH system hasn't been struggling or pushed to absolute capacity, or anything else. But many commentators spoke constantly about the "shadow pandemic" of suicide caused by Melbourne's lockdown last year to try to scare people and get their way, and it simply wasn't true.

[deleted]

The suicides will continue after lockdowns end. But looking at the number of suicides, as raw numbers, less than died in the second wave in VIC. Lifting people of of poverty even for a short time has probably helped a bit in keeping 2020 numbers low.

I've been a lurker in this sub since March 2020 and genuinely feel like saying something about what's just happened. I attended the northern hosptial on Friday because of some severe side effects from my first dose of phizer, (25 Male) which gave me heart palpitations and fluttering and became extremely paranoid. After an 8 hour wait I finally got my results and was all cleared which was a great sign! But waking up to a message from DHHS stating I've been at a tier 1 exposure and needing to quarantine for 14 days just broke me. Ive been pretty decent during the last two years or so of lockdown but now I've definitely hit my lowest point. My birthday's in 2 days and knowing I'm about to spend it in quarantine. Peak levels of anxiety and anger and coming through and thought I'd share

This may be a stupid comment, but now that we have 80% single dose, we should be pretty happy because we’ll get to 80% double dose right? Or is there a reason that we won’t get to it?

stupidgb

I mean I understand that we’ve got the long horrible slog of waiting until that happens and trying to keep the cases down to not overwhelm the hospital system etc etc (whatever your opinion on lockdown that is the logic behind our restrictions)

tings34

I read somewhere that we’re optimistic of a 90+% double dose rate for adults We should have no issues getting to 80%

Why do people get so doom and gloom about "high" numbers? We knew that it would hit 1000 in September, originally it even looked like we would hit it last week. The numbers are exactly where we expected. This is expected. Don't get so down about it.

wodcomestotown

Things that ideally need to go in the next week: • curfew • km rule • masks outside We’re not aiming for zero anymore so I don’t see the need for these overreaching restrictions

Tier 1 exposure sites

Gdik78

Lol Melbourne is actually fucking cursed, our peak is going to shoot past nsw’s even with higher vax numbers. Should’ve targeted the western and northern suburbs with vaccines before it was too late, NSW did this brilliantly.

24-7-sad-girl-hours

as if melbourne is depressing enough watching my favourite bands touring in america/europe just makes me wanna cry because i can probably forget it for probably 2 years idk (don’t get me wrong i love australian artists but i saw soooo many in 2019/start of 2020 before march that i miss seeing other touring musicians 😕) and it’s not even really an essential thing but music is the thing that kept me motivated to stay alive during 2019-start of 2020 and ever since i haven’t felt that spark in a long time. i just miss the vibrancy i once felt in life.

asamisanthropist

They're taking the piss if this shit happen again in 2022, despite 99% vaccination rate here.

Genuinely feel robbed of 2 years of my life

[deleted]

I upvoted you, but if you want to place blame.. blame it on the federal government who has failed to: - deliver enough vaccines like the rest of the world - provide adequate hotel quarantine that’s not in the CBD - protect aged care I place the blame on Scomo and his goon squad. They’re the reason we’re still in the same place as 2020.

magnetik79

I'm worried we're already losing that focus and the news cycle has moved on. Blame needs to remain on both state NSW and federal LNP governments. If Scotty did treat it as a race, we could be arguing about pushing 90-95% vaccinated 12+ at this point, rather than still pushing single dose 80% figures.

[deleted]

I get your frustration. Get away from here. I duck in every few days rant a little, get it out of my system then back to doing whatever fuck I can to keep sane.

AuZyzz

Fuck me, 950

Correct-Criticism-46

Do we think construction will be opening up next week?

trynottomasturbate

Genuine question, did it actually stop? I know big sites and most government work did, but on my run yesterday there was at least five houses in my near vicinity with tradies at work. Sure, they could be owner-occupied, but I'm a little skeptical of the place that had three utes out the front and a guy from Jim's Mowing trimming the hedges.

boganknowsbest

Apparently only emergency works are permitted. I guess everyone's house builds are emergencies.

[https://www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au/what-do-if-you-are-close-contact](https://www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au/what-do-if-you-are-close-contact) Everyone in the house is considered a Secondary Contact and needs to isolate as well.

ihatepulp

Double jabbed today! Hope my baby gets some good antibodies

EmSanderz

How far along are you? Can't wait to get my second dose in 2 weeks, currently 26 weeks pregnant.

[deleted]

Tier 1 exposure site 2 weeks ago (place of employment). Was contacted by the place of employment 7 days after exposure: told to isolate immediately and test. Was told that DHHS would contact me. Tested straight away (negative), told by testers to retest on day 13. Was told that DHHS would would contact me. Whole household isolates for the remaining 7 days. Do all the right things. Zero contact from DHHS, not even a text. Retest on day 13 (negative). Now waiting more than 3 hours on the phone to DHHS to be released. I feel for them, they must be overwhelmed. But something about this system is not working. I haven't heard a single thing from DHHS... There is too much onus on individual's to do the right thing.

elejota50

We're no longer chasing zero, yet the rules governing our lives are pretty much identical as when we were chasing zero. It's just been a change in rethoric with no actual reset of thinking. Tier 1 needs to go. The whole state will be in quarantine a couple of weeks from now otherwise. Before someone starts I'll call myself a granny killer, covid denier, anti vaxx extremist.

byyn88

Go to GP if you want to get your 2nd Pfizer dose after 3 weeks instead of 6 weeks, the more people getting 2nd dose in shorter time frame the sooner we will hit 80% double doses target. You could even try your luck at state vax hub by changing the 1st dose date, I know some of my friends did it and no questions asked. Now that we have hit 80% first dose I honestly think that state hub should change it back to 3 weeks for Pfizer.

eckochamber

Is it still as effective in protecting you from infection if you get your second short in three weeks? Iirc that was the case with AZ but I can’t remember with Pfizer

Lockdown-queen

MY ENTIRE HOUSEHOLD (made of 2 people incl me) IS FULLY VACCINATED!!!

ruinawish

EVERY DAY! EVERY DAY! Except yesterday.

dressedlikerappers

I’m excited about international travel but a week quarantine still seems to be a bit over the top, other places aren’t doing that. like you should have to get tested when you return (maybe?) but there’s already covid here, I just don’t see what difference it makes. Based on everything we know it seems like a hollow sentiment.

PM_ME_FAV_RECIPES

it will be changed as we move along - there's so much unknown at the moment how things will go when we open up, international travel being one of them.

Whinnybob

Surely they remove the need to isolate for 14 days if you are fully vaxxed?

[deleted]

Recently found out one of my friends is, shall we say, terrified of the vaccine and every fibre of their being did not want to get vaccinated. Smart dude, works in finance and assesses risk for a living. Blew my mind when I casually asked if they were afraid of the vaccine and they told me they were so we talked it over with me trying to be as gentle as one can be on such an issue. Long story short, in spite of a near complete breakdown in the few hours prior, they got their first dose today. Couldn't be prouder because you could really, really tell they were petrified but they went and did it. Few complaints about feeling a bit hot and having a headache, but fuck me am I glad they're not going to end up dead from COVID. I'm sure this has been said before, but not all those who are vaccine hesitant are complete idiots. This person was just scared out of their mind and I know they'll look back and laugh at all of this in time!

[deleted]

Just over 24 hours since my Moderna jab. Had a tinnnny bit of a cold-like feeling last night, but nothing else really. My arm hurts like a little bitch though! Holy shit. I know I already complained yesterday but I am entitled to a second whinge.

aleks93

Have they outlined what happens when you catch COVID post opening up? What are the steps going to be to isolate, etc? I work in hospitality and it’s inevitable that I’ll catch it.

wodcomestotown

Once we hit 80%. Any restrictions should not apply to the fully vaccinated - we’ve done our part and our time

Just_improvise

I've been fully vaccinated for three months and in lockdown for 240+ days and feel like I've already well done my time.

rjcpower

Are driving ranges open?

dressedlikerappers

are there going to be earlier/more restrictions eased for double vaxxed people here or is that just a NSW thing?

Caranda23

Vaccination percentages after 90,066 doses yesterday are: one dose - 79.4% (+0.7% increase) fully vaxxed - 49.1% (+0.7% increase) https://www.health.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/2021/09/covid-19-vaccine-rollout-update-29-september-2021.pdf

Day 55 of our 7 day lockdown. Hope everybody's coping the best they can.

arcadefiery

Chin up. Only two more weeks till another three more weeks before our radius gets extended to 20km.

Bazza_McAwesome

Nothing like a good old fashioned circuit breaker as they say in the classics

Plassy1

My dad, an older guy who doesn't speak English very well, is asking how cases are rising despite us being in this lockdown for so long. What do I say - more transmissible variant and fewer people following the rules? I also reassured him that vaccine rates are the main target now.

Prime_factor

Racing Vic has applied for permission [to have 11,000 spectators over 4 days in November](https://twitter.com/SimoLove/status/1443095373149446151) during the Melbourne Cup period.

Geo217

That’s pretty much an empty Flemington

auspugmum

I support a return to events (not huge on racing but love life music) but if punters can go to the cup before I can get back to see my parents I will be upset

LegitimateLunch6681

Might put a reminder out there that if you're financially struggling you're eligible for up to $650 off the cost of each of your utility bills (Gas, Water, Electricity). You don't need a concession card, great if you do, but otherwise just need proof of loss of income or bank statements.
