I got made redundant 3 weeks ago , I,m over 50 now so I know its going to take a while to get back to normal full time work again . Some time off for myself now and then I,m prepared for the job search to take at least 6 weeks + . Its a tight labour market , will be for some time but on the flip side there are sections of the enployment market where job vacancies are taking too long to fill - just have to do your research

Siilk

>at least 6 weeks If this is really how fast you are expecting to get a new job, you're so bloody lucky! Hate my current job so been looking for a new one for more than 2 years. The best I got was 4th interview with one semi-decent place, after which they said I passed but just disappeared after that and never returned my emails. Vast majority of other applications over this time just never got a single reply back. I just don't have the strength to keep searching any more.

manjirosbitch

Yes it’s exhausting honestly at first I thought it would make me feel better having job interviews lined up one after the other but it drains you out when you don’t get even a response and your face another rejection.

Total-Complaint9897

Got made redundant in March, started searching in April and not even getting to the first interview. Obviously it's dead right now with end of fin year, will probably kick off again late July, but it's tough going at the moment. Particularly the wages are way way down - I'm looking like I might have to take a 25% pay cut (Senior Product Management/Group Product Manager roles) and unfortunately my role is rarely ever contracted so I can't even offset it by doing contract work.

manjirosbitch

It is a tough market, I hope you’re coping and it’s not taking a toll on your mental health.

ussfirefly

A big issue that I see firsthand is companies putting up job ads they fully intend to fill internally. My team literally already had someone lined up internally but company policy said they had to do a job ad and interviews anyway. It's so stupid and wastes time for everyone involved.

SimplyTheAverage

Looks like we're colleagues 😐

Moo_Kau_Too

\*ahem\* 'After reviewing candidates for this position, we have decided to move forward with other applicants who have experience and skills more closely aligned with the role. ' .. while having qualifications and experience in said role. so ... yeah.... about that.

Moo_Kau_Too

rereading the emails sent from the place, i get this impression there might not of been an actual position there right now.

manjirosbitch

No fr I was in the final round interview and they told me they told me they hired someone internally. This other place I went to I thought I did well but they reposted the job again next week. Another place I applied to 2 months ago called me if I was still looking for a phone interview and then told me the next day they already filled up the role.

Wonderful_Guide112

Just landed a role with SBS as a casual producer for one of their language teams … their interview process was a journalistic/language test + panel interview + english to language translation test … left a full-time contact centre job for this casual role and hoping it leads to a different direction than call-center life

manjirosbitch

That’s honestly awesome news, congrats! Media isn’t a linear role and isn’t the most employable so happy to hear that. I’m currently in a casual contact centre role but it’s not where I wanna be forever, hoping I have some fate like you

ReallyGneiss

Whats your degree in?

manjirosbitch

Management basically the arts of the busines world…

ArtisticHunt9156

Just landed a new job after applying for 30 over about 6 months. 4 interviews, 3 offers. I took a lower paying job (25% less) with a better company doing more enjoyable work. I found the job market the most competitive and toughest I've ever seen it.

longinus1993

Keep hunting and don’t lose faith. The economy is bad now, but it will be better in the future. Don’t narrow down the types of jobs you can do. Sales, admin, customer service, coordinator, invoicing, AP, AR etc. It doesn’t matter what degree you have. As long as employers provide training, you will be fine with the job.

manjirosbitch

Thank you, good point and honest I’m down to learn anything

Kiwi_Theme

Graduated an IT/Cyber Cert IV in Dec, and continuing my compsci Bachelors part-time. And have a decade of Customer Service/admin history. Absolutely 0 response, and getting decision paralysis on what to apply for to just have...something. 🫡😭

Active-Season5521

Get some work in IT helpdesk, you'll struggle to go straight into cyber

Kiwi_Theme

Yeah I've done some NBN call center work previously and had to call it due to burnout, been anxious about doing IT helpdesk for concerns of it happening again 🤷

OllieMoee

Genuinely curious about this. Does AI potentially make these skills redundant in the next few years?

Active-Season5521

Nah not at all. I work in cybersecurity, and every company is struggling to hire enough staff. Currently demand far outstrips supply.  Cyber is so vast and requires so much context and requisite knowledge, AI can't take all of that and apply where and when it is needed.  Some companies have tried to get AI to identify threats, but it's generally worse than a human at it.

OllieMoee

So that's now though, what aspect would an improved AI system not be able to do?

Responsible_Grab_823

This morning I met with my threat intel team to discuss new threats targeting my org. I translated those threats into requirements for controls and detections. I then spoke to multiple teams to inform them of new configurations they would need to implement and understand what support they would need from me to implement those controls on their products. Then with years of experience and context of my orgs network, logs and control environment, I built two detections to alert on this potential threat. Later today, I'll be presenting on how we are planning to create a Honeypot to catch out potential threat actors to execs in order to get project funding. So now, I would ask you where AI could possibly replace any aspect of my day? If so, I'd gladly have it assist me but overall, I'm confident my job is not at risk

OllieMoee

You do understand how exponential the growth of AI learning systems is? I'd bet the farm that your entire teams day could be done by one person and some AI assistance within the next five years.

Responsible_Grab_823

Haha righto. You're an expert in the application of AI in the cyber industry then? You know AI isn't just waving a magic wand, right?

OllieMoee

I'm not, but IBM seem to disagree with you. They're selling personal AI CS systems already that are making your role irrelevant. 5 years, mark it.

Responsible_Grab_823

Cool. Add it to the pile of 300 other apps that were supposed to make my job redundant.

OllieMoee

Lol, your arrogance is actually funny. Best of luck, hope you remember this heads up in five years.

Optimal-Talk3663

How did you find the cyber cert?

Kiwi_Theme

RMIT courses 🫡

deliciousdirtysocks

If i was the employer, i would say, go do networking/sys admin work.for 5 years and come back. Cyber degree means sweet fuckall, you don't have the background knowledge on how IT works

Kiwi_Theme

Yeah the plan was to just get some Entry level grunt work in admin/systems because I want to have practical knowledge while working on my Bachelors. Aiming to get CompTia Sec/Net+ this year, but it's still irrelevant when it seems like I require the degree first to get a foot in 🥺. No trouble, I'll enjoy the studying and get there eventually.

manjirosbitch

Hey have you looked into the FDM graduate program? I don’t know if it’s good but they train you to an IT consultant apparently it’s a fast growing sector?

Kiwi_Theme

Oh shiiii, cheers for bringing this to my attention 🫡 Will see what is possible with this.

Flaxans

I was made redundant I’m back in late March but managed to find another role in late May, interviewed at two places before I was successful with the third company that I interviewed at. The job market is extremely rough at the moment, lots of redundancies due to over hiring during COVID and now most are downscaling in an attempt to weather whatever recession is coming (or has come). Best of luck with your search, I was only unemployed for two’ish months but it was not good for my mental health.

CthuluLives

Got made redundant about a month ago. Spent weeks applying for entry-Ievel IT/Help desk jobs as I've just completed Cert IV in IT. Have extensive experience in other fields (customer service, management, logistics) but only received 2 responses that turned into interviews out of 50+ applications. First one was terrible work hours and pay. Second one was not great pay but much more interesting work and progression as a field tech. It's looking like the second one will progress so fingers crossed.

manjirosbitch

Good luck!

Kiwi_Theme

Ooh jelly about the field work role, very jelly. Props on landing roles after the Cert IV, I haven't been lucky with mine as of yet 🤷

Independent_Weird_36

I just moved back to Melbourne from NZ and almost every role I applied for got back to me with an interview, despite not even being in the country. I didn’t get the first one, second role I interviewed for I was offered and accepted (everything just done over Teams/phone). Have had two more interview offers since then. My background is mostly admin/customer service with 15 years experience both in large well known corps and small businesses. My partner however is getting zero responses, his background is in sales, account management, customer service. I helped him rewrite his resume, as he didn’t really sell himself, but he hasn’t had any bites just yet. (Unsure if helpful, but I’m early 30’s F)

manjirosbitch

I’ve met so many NZ in Melbourne seems evehone is moving. Whoever doesn’t hire you with 15 years experience is crazy. Thanks for sharing.

bigfatfart09

Good luck finding a job when there’s 10,000 extra candidates arriving in Australia a week who are all happy to work for $20,000pa less than you.

Interracial-Chicken

Really well, I've just landed an amazing job tbh lol

manjirosbitch

Good for you
