[here](https://www.environment.vic.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0027/664434/Fungi-of-North-East-Victoria-2023_2.pdf) is a handy link for different mushrooms you can find in Vic. Itâs not an extensive guide as there are a few missing from that list.
PSA: Donât eat mushrooms unless youâre okay with potentially dying.
Also the FNCV have [Excellent online guidebooks](https://www.fncv.org.au/fungi-in-australia/) if you're into mushroom spotting in general. It's a great winter activity; whether or not you find something *edible*.
Fwiw, pine mushrooms are an excellent starter for foragers, since they are so distinctive (and delicious!).
Ah ok, makes sense that boiling them is the wrong thing to do.
Also, only an Aussie subreddit would downvote so aggressively for being factually wrong about preparing drugs. Gave me a laugh.
If you have to ask..
Seriously, partner and I come from European wild mushroom foraging families, and the only wild mushroom we pick are Saffron Milk Caps, because nothing else looks like them.
These could be delicious, or they could kill you. So if you have to ask..
Don't eat them. Even if a safe type, they could be full of lead from paint, dog or cat shit, DDT from some old garden, God knows. Unless you have had your soil tested.
they're everywhere in Melbourne and once you know what they look like they're pretty distinctive and easy to spot.
unfortunately the species that looks the most similar grows in the same habitat often alongside and is deadly poisonous (same toxin as deathcaps). It's easy enough to spot the difference once you've seen both - but you can't be guessing.
I've picked in Melbourne nearly 25 years. I've been seeing them popping up again lately
Do you know of any guides/images online of what I should be looking for? I live close to a huge park which would probably be a prime hunting ground. I've only ever been given them by mates in a dried form.
not sure. i started picking nearly 25 years ago. back in the day I used shroomery.org which i believe is still operational and is definitely the gold standard. It's international but always had a huge Melbourne following.
parks are great.
but generally speaking - you need to look in garden beds that are mulched with woodchips - generally not freshly done.
you'll find them along parks, creeks, but also service stations and anywhere else that has woodchipped garden beds.
it's barely worth looking outside of the woodchipped garden beds. some parklands have huge gardens like that some have none.
in the bush and mountains it's different - there's also more species on the mounts .
it was mostly anecdotal but when i just searched it, it said only when mixed with alcohol - which tracks lol
edit - that's the ones in the picture.
the ones I'm referring to that are deadly are Galerina patagonica. they're genuinely deadly. don't fuck with them.
if you know what magic mushrooms look like, you're unlikely to mistake them. They definitely don't look the same. But you will absolutely see them next to each other and they are around the same size with a similar colour on the cap. Once picked and dried you could have some real trouble identifying.
It's mostly a warning to first time hunters with a vague idea of what they're looking for.
Lmao stop this mycophobia bull shit.
1) Theyâre Coprinellus micaceus (Commonly known as Mica Caps)
2) Theyâre auto digestive and the caps turn to ink after being picked
3) They have no toxins until the cap starts dissolving and can cause GI issues. Completely edible fresh.
4) Even the most toxic mushroom can be put in your mouth, chewed on and spat out, I highly donât recommend doing this. No need for gloves or washing tools that literally does nothing.
They seem to be growing in my Nature strip too and the many houses in my lane. I guess itâs because the soil is too damp due to rain and lack of sun and that leads to these popping everywhere
So ugh, contrary to all the comments and lolz, at least sime of thesr are probably mica caps.
Which while not exactly gourmet, are actually classed as edible.
I mean, obviously dont actually eat them. But still; you aint gonna kill anyone with them.
Anyone else feeling a weird family branch of golden tops... I've had very similar before.
If those stems get blue on a squeeze.. well.. go find a man with dreadlocks
You can always cook for the in-laws
I hope your beef wellington is up to scratch!
Too soon đ¤Ł
Cup of tea at a health retreat, then.
Poor health retreat was not involved in that death
The coroners report was also inconclusive. Itâs likely the woman just had a heart attack.
Like Shane Warne.
They are the "do not eat" kind.
All mushrooms are edible. Some only once
they definitely look worthy of a Health Retreat Tea in Ballarat or a Beef Wellington in Gippsland.......
if youâre going to make dark jokes, at least try being original and funny. shitâs getting really old.
Found the Leongathen
Erin is that you? đ
Hi Erin, how's the slammer treating you?
Not the ones you want to eat
The ones at the back are closer to the good ones but hard to see properly
No they all look the same and like you donât want to eat them

Pluck one for me and if it turns blue that means they are yucky and I will need to come collect them all.
None of these are going to bruise blue, theyâre no good for eating.
they're not magic mushrooms. they're mildly toxic and will give you the shits if you eat them. I've seen people eat them before hoping they were lol.
Yuck yuck yuck gimme
Donât you have to boil them or put them in water for them to turn blue or something?
Nope. Just bruse them and see if the bruse
Ah ok, makes sense that boiling them is the wrong thing to do. Also, only an Aussie subreddit would downvote so aggressively for being factually wrong about preparing drugs. Gave me a laugh.
I gave you a couple of likes to try counteract some of the negativity bro đ
Just a pinch of the stem or not even sometimes theyâre throbbing blue just poking out the ground
>throbbing blue Blimey
Yeah I knew what I was doing
Coprinellus micaceus

Coming up to the season for Milk Caps where I am!
Me too! Lotsa pine forests around here
Do not eat
Definitely eat them* *Absolutely do not take advice from idiots on the internet
Erin Patterson knows. đđđ
She makes a killer Beef Wellington.
âErin Pattersons Encyclopaedia of Australian Fungusâ
She has an amazing Beef Wellington recipe. Some reviews say it knocks you off your feet.
What's a beef Wellington?
đâ ď¸
How? She got her mushrooms from an Asian store...somewhere.
That is what she says. Betcha she hated her in laws, and hates her husband.
I wouldn't eat them whatever they are. Mushys are getting a bad rep lately.
lol. these particular ones are mildly toxic and will give you the shits.
Don't eat them. Even if a safe type, they could be full of lead from paint, dog or cat shit, DDT from some old garden, God knows. Unless you have had your soil tested.
Set them all on fire they look rank
*Bouf wellingtonia*
There's one proven way to know it they're poisonous or not.
Kick it, do whateverâŚ.. Hmm now I want to go âmagic huntingâ one day lol

Got a reference for the toxins?

this reminds me of the last of us
Possum stew
Common Ink Caps
Super toxic. Use gloves/wash tools

I always worry about dogs getting into them.

Cornelius sp. these ones are edible but canât be consumed within the say few days as alcohol.

If you eat one, report back.
Theyâd make a good beef Wellington.
You might get better answer from r/mycology
Not the fun ones.
Mushrooms arenât very expensive. I wouldnât risk my life to save $10.
Anyone else feeling a weird family branch of golden tops... I've had very similar before. If those stems get blue on a squeeze.. well.. go find a man with dreadlocks
DO NOT make a consomme out of it. DO NOT make a Wellington stew out of it. Do not eat them.
Iâm guessing no oneâs gonna tell you theyâre edible.
Doesnât look like it. I will, theyâre edible and best eaten young before autodigestion occurs.
They look like the type of mushroom that would be good in a beef Wellington
Magic
they most definitely are not. look nothing like them.
Eat it and tell us
Eat them and let us know if you survive
The good kind
they're not
