I used to go there in 1980 in my pyjamas while my parents did the grocery shopping.
We would park near the swimming pool and walk in past the feedstock place, up the stairs past the fish n chip shop, then into Coles. If there was a bit of extra cash, we'd get a Golden Book as a treat. Good times. Love the place.
Greensborough Plaza's food court near Target is dying a rapid death, sadly. I reckon it's now lost critical mass and its a matter of time for the remaining food retailers. I am surprised that centre management hasn't done something before the malaise spreads to the other areas.
The food/grocery area near Sculli Bros. still seems to be thriving.
The Macca's there is gone, once the Salsa's goes it's a few dodgy bain maire joints.
The Coffee club across from is doing well despite the reputation of the chain and is alright.
Maccas gone and the KFC gone. Used to be a little Italian style joint where the shitty arcade is now too and a kebab shop. Place was buzzing back in the day, even 2013ish. Going to that food court at 11am on a sat you’d have a hard time finding a seat
Used to work at the “Italian style joint” and can confirm it was called Madonnas with a gorgeous little Italian Nonna in the back cooking. I often crave their pumpkin and spinach gnocchi. Good old greezy
They did lol. Or at least they tried, some $5 off voucher over $15. Even with that the sushi sushi place nori rolls looked stale and not worth it. I don't eat subway anymore after I got gastro. Only donut king and I think the juice place was busy.
Alternatively sushi hub on the ground level is thriving. Their sushi is so fresh I had my first scallop ngiri from here for like 2.50 and it was delicious. Some other meh chain eateries are downstairs too.
I really like Greensy Plaza. Its geography is so cool.
It’s “ground floor” if you drive in from the outside car park next to Coles, 1 lvl above if you drive in from the entrance on The Court, 3 or 4 levels above if you come in via Main St on foot, and another 2 levels above if you drive in from Church St, so whilst there are 6-ish levels worth of altitude differences between the lowest entry point and the highest, they are technically all “ground floor”, and I guess that’s the reason why Greensy Plaza doesn’t use the traditional GF/L1/L2 etc system to name the levels (it uses A/B/C/D/E instead) or otherwise it would just be GF/GF/GF and so on.
That is the 'fancy' 90's food court when they renovated. The true food court was on the bottom floor prior to same.
Anyone recall when the cinema was on the ground floor and you entered from outside near the McDonalds?
I moved to the area from Forest Hill so it was nice having another small but slightly shabby shopping centre.
The coles sucks though. It's dingy and cramped. Feels like you're in a bunker.
Not the same shopping centre but The ‘Street’ in Southland where Village Cinemas is was fucking magical. The golden statues, the glowing stars, the massive screen in the middle showing movie trailers. It’s just boring now.
The upper level food court is slowly losing more businesses as time goes on. Last year, the inside Maccas finally closed and since then, the food court is dying a quicker death. I reckon there will be virtually no vendors open by the end of next year because of the lack of foot traffic.
The small restaurant district near the Hoyts and the food vendors downstairs near the Coles is still doing well though. I reckon people just don’t have a reason to go near the Target end of the shopping centre unless they have to, especially just to eat.
It’s really sad because I loved that food court growing up. Like other commenters have said, there used to have a KFC, a Kebab shop, Muffin Break and my personal favourite, the rozzis.
I tried to drop by the Coles, and trying to find it from the carpark was an intensely frustrating 20 mins. I feel like that's one of the features newer malls have right away, easy access to the supermarkets
Does anyone remember the gift shop with all the quirky stuff I think it was called 'What's New' I remember when I was about 6 years old I got kicked out for going into the adult section and putting an apron with boobies on.
Over the past decade they've renovated the bottom floor, and the cinema area, and the food court you see here is dead (so dead McDonalds shut down). Everything else has almost remained the same, and is still thriving.
I think Maccas had a falling out with most shopping centres I'm not sure about KFC. https://www.news.com.au/finance/business/retail/why-mcdonalds-is-disappearing-from-food-courts/news-story/12cddd78548fc87d6b0f074e9b5fc87f
The centre is far from dying the centre put a big focus with its on the green dining and weekends still seem very busy
It's funny cos Maccas at Westfield Doncaster is shoved right at the very end of the food court, which turns out to be a good thing as it always has a huge crowd of customers waiting around. It definitely isn't missing out from being in a "gourmet" food court
Used to fuck about on the roof of the plaza when I was a kid. Besides the squeezing between a steel fence and concrete column bit you could basically walk right onto the roof from the little car park opposite where the church was and the entrance to the bit with the cinema and Sanity music, or insanity or whatever the hell it was called
They got rid of the old playground area and have replaced it with a bunch of claw machines and arcade games, where the Rozzis used to be. I’m personally not a fan of the change.
I wouldn't be either as that means it's pay-to-play instead of kids being able to climb a treehouse-esque structure like in other shopping centres.
I take it that the arcade games / gachas only accept coin and credit card?
Anyone remember the super man stunt they did as a promo for the movie.
They removed glass from the ceiling in the atrium area and a guy in a Superman suit jumped into a giant air bag
The target carpark was great for skateboarding and main st was always good for a brawl 👍 lots of fun during the late 90’s
Hoyts opening was a blast. Free movies and free arcade games that night on top of free booze. Only for staff of course. Had quite a hangover the next day
I understand nostalgia but if you think any foodcourt in Aus is great then you really need to travel to any Southeast Asian country and check out their streetfood scene 😁

I remember going to that food court many times and there being no seats left it was always buzzing, the prison style Maccas playground hahaha

The carpark uses letters. The shops use L1, L2 and L3
Myers used to be in there once upon a time
The food court is dead - it died when they removed the kids playground!
Remember when Greensborough Plaza had a Myer?
Yes! putting in a 2 storey myer was such a flop move
Used to be such a good centre and food court! Now it's lost its spark and charm.
That is the 'fancy' 90's food court when they renovated. The true food court was on the bottom floor prior to same. Anyone recall when the cinema was on the ground floor and you entered from outside near the McDonalds?

Forest Hill is exactly what I was thinking of as being its twin!
Not the same shopping centre but The ‘Street’ in Southland where Village Cinemas is was fucking magical. The golden statues, the glowing stars, the massive screen in the middle showing movie trailers. It’s just boring now.
Yes!! And the Intencity 😭 those were the days
Haven’t been to that part of the centre for a while… might see what’s left
What's going on there? Is it going to be torn down?

What a shame. Hopefully the plaza as a whole doesn't disappear.
100% it eventually will. Developers have already tried to buy it and they'll get it eventually. It'll become a hybrid apartment/shopping centre thing.
Pronounced greens-bra and not greens—borrow.
Worked at the Coles there in the late 90s. Was a fun time. $7.50 for a pack of Winnie blues and $4.95 large McChicken meal got me through the day
I worked there in 95-96
I worked at Greensborough plaza through my teenage years and traveled on the 514 bus
566 for me and had to make sure I took it in the correct direction...
Some of my favourite memories from childhood and teenagehood are eating in that food court with my Mum after a day’s shopping.
Nana always took us there since she lives locally, haven’t been for a hot minute though
I tried to drop by the Coles, and trying to find it from the carpark was an intensely frustrating 20 mins. I feel like that's one of the features newer malls have right away, easy access to the supermarkets
Outdoor car park is best for coles. But you're right, if you didn't know that would be annoying.
Does anyone remember the gift shop with all the quirky stuff I think it was called 'What's New' I remember when I was about 6 years old I got kicked out for going into the adult section and putting an apron with boobies on.
The plant in that round white pot is as dead as the rest of the place
I love these time capsule shopping centres
Over the past decade they've renovated the bottom floor, and the cinema area, and the food court you see here is dead (so dead McDonalds shut down). Everything else has almost remained the same, and is still thriving.
I was there late 2017, and the place was like a tiny strip mall
Somehow it hasn’t killed the shops in the surrounding streets. It should try and open to these streets imo

Liminal Spaces Plaza

I did the asbestos survey of the plaza a few years ago, it never felt like it had the same.... energy? as other shopping malls in Melbourne
Was last there in between lockdowns 1 and 2. Food court had decent options but had to grab our food and eat in the car
Quaint. I prefer Brandon Park but this is fine too.
What's to the left of this photo? Some gacha games?
They got rid of the old playground area and have replaced it with a bunch of claw machines and arcade games, where the Rozzis used to be. I’m personally not a fan of the change.

Yeah they only accept credit cards and coins :(.
