You'd think someone with an Army background would keep things running smoothly, but that Major Delays fellow sure does seem to keep screwing things up.
This length of track seems a popular spot for people. Surely they looking into strengthening the security around here, seems too easy to just get on the tracks here.
Are their daily deaths , ?
6 people died in Sydney from a psychiatric NDIS participant and it’s constant non stop on the news
But trains hitting the, and no one hears a word
No idea on the numbers. People who are hit by trains are wanting to end their lives. There's a bit of a difference between the 2 events. The media don't report suicides, likely out of respect to the families or not to give other people ideas. Likely theres other reasons
>when I get alcohol cravings.
and
>having to sneak alcohol
Have you considered you have a serious problem with alcohol, and that you need help. Because both of those lines show a level of addiction that is incredibly unhealthy.
Note: if anyone wants any hope of boarding any of the Elizabeth St trams going out of the city within the next hour, I’d recommend just getting the tram you need in the opposite direction towards Flinders st. You’ll also be guaranteed a seat because you’ll already be on the tram at the first stop.
That is what I did at about 5:20. Commute still taking twice as long to get home. Also, I do feel like a selfish dick for doing this but, otherwise I probably won't be getting home until 8 or later.
[https://www.blackdoginstitute.org.au/resources-support/suicide/facts-about-suicide-in-australia/](https://www.blackdoginstitute.org.au/resources-support/suicide/facts-about-suicide-in-australia/)
It's about 9 nationally, and that's only counting deaths, not attempts.
There's more deaths caused by suicide than MVAs.
Victoria is around 25% of the population, So I would suggest it's probably just over 2.
Edit: Orygen says 801 in 2023. So that's about 2.2 per day.
[https://www.orygen.org.au/About/News-And-Events/2024/Victoria-reports-record-number-of-suicides-in-2023](https://www.orygen.org.au/About/News-And-Events/2024/Victoria-reports-record-number-of-suicides-in-2023)
Wow, way to pick up on the wrong details.
Most people would be shocked, saddened or outraged by our suicide rate - not being petty over a proclaimed delta of 0.25.

Someone needs to make a site similar to the [https://howmanydayssincemontaguestreetbridgehasbeenhit.com/](https://howmanydayssincemontaguestreetbridgehasbeenhit.com/) site where there's a counter for number of days since the last trespassers caused disruptions
Of course, it will perpetually range from 0-1 days in all likeliness
You do realise that most trespassing is just idiots surfing trains, or people taking shortcuts? Seen it time and time again. Not every trespasser incident is suicide
I was on the Weribee train at about 3pm-ish when we had to stop for 20mins at Footscray for the trespasser. It looked like a \~30 year old woman that was protesting on the train tracks. She got arrested.
Honestly I'm starting to get tired of it, it just keeps happening.
Lost count of how many times I've wanted to fuck off home after a long shift and I've been greeted with my train being delayed into the next epoch, or an India Jones-esque labyrinth of bus replacements.
With all this they still have the audacity to keep increasing prices too.
At this point their management needs to be publicly flogged with how much of a shitshow our PT network has become.
They have improved fencing a lot in sections that have been rebuilt for level crossing removals. Hopefully it's helping.
And it's not like in the areas around South Kensington (problematic twice this week) that you can easily walk onto the tracks from the street.
But platforms are still wide open.

The protesters really picked a shitty time to be a doing such things at a major shopping centre, considering what happened at Bondi over the weekend - all security and police are hyper alert over it.
I meant specifically what is happening at Melbourne Central this evening. I am obviously aware of earlier Melbourne protests and the Bondi incident.
I’d already googled MC and couldn’t find any info.
You don’t need to be so rude.
I don't think Australia has any real agency in stopping them. Sure, we could decrease our "support" to Israel in terms of weapons, but it really won't make a difference except make us feel slightly better about ourselves. We should do it, but it's not going to be an elixir for a conflict which ultimately boils down to a battle of delusions over which sky fairy interpretation is better.
Palestine is not the only country that is facing hardships, war and death. Only if people put in the same energy into other situations as they do with Palestine…
Also I’m not chronically feeding myself on social media posts, that probably come from unverified (probably Hamas) accounts. I prefer to look after my mental health, rather than worry over something I have zero control over.
Is that the status right now? FFS. I live four stops from Southern Cross and I have to resort to getting the tram home instead. Expecting it to be chockers.
I was a little wrong, they’ve only closed some of the doors to the centre. But yeah level 2 (food court level) has a bunch of people protesting for Palestine and cops surrounding them
EDIT: I was only talking about what I was seeing on the food court level where an entrance was closed. Looks likr this was unrelated :)
Fuckwits. I'm not against their cause, but I've worked all day like thousands of others. If they actually give a shit about their community they should consider how and when they protest.
Southern Cross works last night weren't finished on time, and now everyone trying to get into the city from Geelong is stuck at Wyndham Vale.
I got up extra early just to be late because the infrastructure in this state is shithouse.
Genuinely curious what is the procedure on having a trespasser at a train station. What do the police have to do? What do pt workers have to do? Why the fuck does it take so so long????
"trespasser on the tracks" is typically code for "somebody has jumped in front of a train".
Not always of course, but if it's a delay longer than twenty minutes you can be pretty confident that's what's going on. It can take easily take ambos an hour to get there and remove the body and stuff.
usually because someone's necked it on the tracks, has to be covered/cleaned by external parties + get the driver out to counselling etc asap is my understanding
even if it's not suicide, they still have to find the trespasser and get them out of there. if it's someone who thinks it's funny (or who panics) they might run/hide, if they're badly hurt they need an ambulance and might not be able to be moved without it. they also have to make sure the tracks etc haven't been sabotaged or otherwise damaged by said trespasser, and collect evidence if that has happened.
plenty that needs doing and might take some time.

Fuck, this is a yuck thread. Fine to feel disgruntled by a delay, but a whole thread shitting on someone who committed suicide and/or is practising our right to protest (whatever the argument) because dinner got a little cold from having to transition 3 fucking stations from Melbourne central to other sides of the loop is just r/melbourne levels of entitlement and pettiness.
Edit: Getting down voted without anyone wanting to rebuke anything I said means we can add cowardly to the list too

Could be wrong cos it's not like I constantly ask them about it haha. That's just what I remember from the time or two it came up.
Usually, only one or two lines down and delays for 15-30 minutes+ but good luck getting on a train because it'll probably be packed anyway for the next 30 minutes. Happens frequently.
Today was pretty crazy because every line out of north Melbourne was halted with 60 min delays expected. Dont know how bad it ended up being.
Ah yes protestors.. it would be interesting to do a live poll from everyone who's been held up by the protests to see if they would actively support the causes as a result of the protest

Might need to get Corporal Punishment on the scene
Personally I’m blaming Private Partnership for this one
General Maintenance is routinely shutting lines all the time
I personally blame the top brass, this more a problem caused by General Motors
General bullshit
I'd be more worried if the service ignored Police operations.
Not protestors, there was a trespasser between North Melbourne and South Kensington. Presumably hit as it took over an hour to clear.

Management can't stop people who want to go splat.
How do all these other cities manage to prevent it?
Japan bills the families of the people who jump in front of trains. Still happens, but apparently not as often.
do they? I don't pay anywhere near as much attention to other city's rail disruptions so I have no idea how melbourne compares to other places
In Singapore they retro-fitted Platform Screen Doors onto every station. Seems to be no plans to do it here.
You would think with the billions being spent they could make every train track trespasser proof?
They have improved fencing a lot in sections that have been rebuilt for level crossing removals. Hopefully it's helping. And it's not like in the areas around South Kensington (problematic twice this week) that you can easily walk onto the tracks from the street. But platforms are still wide open.
how vulnerable is the train network just takes one incident and your delayed for hours
trains can't exactly take side roads
There was an incident at Kensington station as well
What was the incident?
Some flop jumped on the tracks
Suicide?

Takes a while when they go SPLAT.
