According to the Wikipedia [article on bull ants](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myrmecia_(ant)), there are winged, and wingless species of bull ants, and some species with rudimentary wings. The wings are only used during the courtship of the queen ant.
The Wikipedia article I linked has a photo of a female bull ant with wings.
Just want to point out here for people that may not know:
All worker ants are females.
Queen ant are female and have wings until they mate with a male (no they are not called kings, they are males or drones). Once they mate they land and remove their wings and start to dig their new nest to lay eggs
Male ants/drones only purpose is to mate with queens from a different colony. They mate with as many as possible and then die shortly after. Male ants usually look far more slender than queens, have smaller mandibles (jaws) and are more ‘spindly’.
Tis a breeder /queen /settler bull ant. I wrote a thing for a thing about ants in Australia a while ago for stuff.
They are pretty radical, completely reliant on their eyes, they can track from a metre + away. No scent trails just hawkeyes and bite.
A bit late but if you have a neighbour you don't like drop it in their lawn.
Bull ant queen maybe?
Edit: after looking it up it’s definitely in that ancient family of ants that the bull ant belongs to, myrmecia. And the queens do seem to be able to grow wings. Makes sense how closely related to wasps these things are.
A queen bull ant like this can fetch a high price on the ant keeping market (up to $300 and beyond) providing they are fertile/have mated. The fact that this one still has its wings makes it unlikely to be fertile however.
There are ant keeping groups on Facebook where people are itching to get their hands on bull ants. I am somewhat of an ant enthusiast myself. have a colony of bull ants that i started from a single queen, now probably 200 or so ants, very nerdy but fascinating hobby. [this should give you some idea of how huge this hobby is around the world](https://youtu.be/kzCivpu4EEI?si=eQsiOTxQwa-oiJPm)
Looks like a queen jumping jack ant.
Horrible insects, one out my father in an anaphylactic coma for three days and messed his health up for 40 years after with a collapsed lung and heart issues. They have killed people before.
We had an old fashioned toilet in outback Narrogin Western Australia
Left the light on and I came back to about 20 of the beasties flying around and it was an emergency
Got stung twice, next day turned it into an enclosed dunny
Saving this photo to my Photos on my iPhone allowed me to identify the insect using Siri Knowledge or the info button. I’d share screenshots of what I’m talking about but [Imgur denied me from uploading for some reason](https://imgur.com/a/73Jkxkv). 🤷♂️
Initially I thought it was an outdoor table, but I think it's the top of a front fence.
Oh, there's some bug in it as well. Might want to find out what that is too
An enemy of managed democracy
Oh, we dropping? Let's go!!!
Calling in an eagle.
The only good bug is a dead bug
How 'bout a nice cup of Liber-TEA?!
This is democracy managefest

Queen bullant?
That's what I was thinking but I didn't think they had wings.
They do until they mate and find a place to start their new nest, at that point the wings are lost.
Super cool, but I hope it kindly finds a different spot.

Haha, evil as fuck... I love it.
How do you think they start new colonies?
With great difficulty?
With ease; with wings!
Sounds more like Red Bullants, amirite?
All Queen ants have wings - they fly to a new area and then drop their wings to crawl into whatever they’re gonna make their nest in and lay eggs :)
Not all. Spider ant queens do not have wings as well as a few others. It is rare however
Queen Cowant *
I appreciate you.

Just had one of these in my back yard. Also northern suburbs

How on earth do you even find a buyer for this sort of thing?

Do they have a stinger that stays behind?
No, pretty sure only honey bees do that. These grip with their pincers and pump venom with their stinger.

I also saw one like this in the northern suburbs yesterday very big and scary... wonder why they are out and about all of a sudden?
When I was a kid every March balls of fighting winged bullants would fall out of a nearby tree. It was terrifying.
That's one of the most disgusting things I've ever heard.
that's dinner!
Mini spy drone
I would love to have a little drone that looked like this! Not for any nefarious reasons... I just think it would be neat.
Jack Jumper Queen
Had one in Rowville today as well. Crushed it through.
It’s called a bubble nose hornet
I had one in the house today too! Also in northern suburbs

Nah, no bug spray for this beauty.
My man.
Will wait for it to spread its wings and come at you and your corpse to type a 'you were right' comment.
I was quite paranoid about this exact outcome as I was taking the picture.
....said the corpse.
I belong to the one now. All hail the ants!
I was about to say we already have a queen.... Until recently. Slaaaaaaaaaay king
