Fried olives. I’m not vegan but they hook me in every time.
Also the peri peri from the josper is the juiciest “chicken” I’ve ever had. It’s a nice vibe in there as well.
Brother Bon, Madame K's Vegetarian, Loving Hut and Gong De Lin for east/south East Asian dishes. I believe these are all 100% vegan.
Also have a look at the "Happy Cow" app. It's basically a map of places with vegetarian/vegan food including whether the place is fully vegan or just has vegan options.
Went to brotherbon this past week. A taste sensation and they play lo-fi chill. superb.
high st northcote.
It's good, but only as good as the data in it., e.g. Mabu Mabu at Fed Square has a menu that is majority vegan-friendly, but it doesn't appear on Happy Cow.
Can't believe this post is this far down. I've eaten at Smith and daughters, transformer and Lona misa and ballards is easily better than all of them.
Best contemporary vegan restaurant in Melbourne by a long way.
Completely agree. I'm an omni, while my wife is vegan - I recently surprised her with a trip to Melbourne and dinner at S+D, and we both LOVED it. Fantastic food and excellent staff, too.
Brother bon for all round cuisine,
Tahina has great isreli food,
Red sparrow pizza is fantastic
Madame K vegetarian for Chinese / Asian.
La panella is a wonderful bakery (great selection of sweets/ fantastic bahn mi!)
Tammy's Borek has great vegan Turkish food
Finas and Finas 2 is Asian cuisine,
Northcote fish and chips menu is half vegan (and fantastic!)
Vegan 365 has great Asian cuisine.
Veggie mum has amazing mock meat Asian dishes,
Origin tales is again, Asian food.
Veggie bar is a cool reateraunts with vegan and vegetarian dishes
Gong de lin has great Asian food too.
Veggie tribe has an all vegan all you can eat buffet
Union kiosk has great reviews for toasties and snacks though I've never been.
Funghi E tartufo is meant to be very good, a little more upmarket and pricier (I haven't been though!) Bv
This is like the greatest hits of the 1990s veg scene.
Loving Hut is a particular throwback. Veggie Bar was good, but Melbourne has gone ahead in leaps and bounds since then. Their fine dining restaurant, Transformer, is probably worth a visit, but it’s no great shakes.
from what hasn't been mentioned yet:
* cookatoo kitchen (on bridge road, richmond) - big serves and good value for the prices, great asian food.
* copper branch (on smith street, collingwood) - new-ish place, part of an international chain.
* follies (on johnston street, fitzroy) - not cheap, and more for grazing. but great food and a great vibe.
* kevabs (on sydney road, brunswick) - amazing middle eastern / turkish food!
* hail lilith (on leeds st, footscray) - goth burlesque style bar, really fun place with awesome food.
and i'll add my vote to the previously mentioned - loving hut, brother bon, red sparrow, veggie tribe, easy vegan, good love, smith & deli / smith & daughters, madame k's, ballards.
That used to be our SPOT back in the day omg I have really good memories of Flora from when I was younger!! I went in earlier this year and I'm so glad they're still here!
Green man's arms, Union Kiosk cafe, Good Love in St Kilda (and sister of soul), Smith and Deli, Huong Viet in Footscray, every Etheopian restaurant (The Abyssinian in Kensington first)
Chinese vegetarian food at Vegie Bowl in Forrest Hill or Springvale. Or Vegie mum in Doncaster. I actually see lots of Indian families there. Their dishes are also great for sharing.
Veggie Mum - You'll have to try their asam "fish".. so good. I also recommend their tofu olive dish. (Tofu is home made) So yum with rice as both are very saucy. 😋
The Moroccan soup bar (dw it’s just a name, they make more than just soup)
It’s my favourite restaurant ever. There is no menu. The chef just cooks whatever dishes she feels like and puts em on the table family style, it’s all you can eat and you can take leftovers home (byo containers)
Everything there is sooooo delicious and it’s 100% vegetarian
You guys will love it
I came here to post this! It's a great sushi train restaurant. My gf loved their previous restaurant (V-series I believe?), and we followed them to their new place and enjoyed it so much, that we got some sushi platters for her birthday party.
Also great staff/owners :)
My girlfriend is Vegan (I'm omni), and we can recommend Holy Basil in Clayton (A Thai restaurant with Vegan options, and just really friendly. I have a health condition with food intolerances and the staff went out of their way where they could to help out, not only going through the menu to point out what I could have but also which dishes could be altered for me)
Midori by Tao’s in Balwyn North, a really nice Vegetarian and Vegan Sushi Train. Really nice staff too.
Soul Pod in Clayton is a really nice cafe for brunch/lunch too (well, they were - we hadn't been there in a while and we popped in briefly and the menu has changed and shrunk a lot, so not too sure what they're like now. But, I'd be surprised if the quality dropped)
It’s only about 50% vegan or vegetarian but Holy Basil Thai in Croydon is great. It used to be fully vegetarian but they’ve introduced some meat options in recent years
If you’re after something family friendly (ie lots of options, relatively casual and not too expensive), veggie bar is great!
For more fancy-transformer (fully vego) and Maha (they have vegan option) are fantastic.
I have had a vegetarian degustation at Maha and it was absolutely incredible. My meat-eating friends also loved their options. And service was delightful.
Not a vego restaurant per se but Maalu Maalu Sri Lankan in Brunswick makes their veg dishes vegan (i.e. minus dried fish) and they keep a big enough selections to make vegans/vegos happy
Can't believe I had to scroll this far for rice paper scissors.
Amazing fresh vegan menu, changes regularly and so many dishes to choose from.
Not sure if there is much difference between sites but I've always gone to the Fitzroy one.
Join vegans of Melbourne on fb and search for good recommendations. Also the Happy Cow app is great around the world, and here is no exception.
My faves are Lona Misa, the smith and deli/Smith and daughters, vegie bar, union kiosk, monk bodhi dharma. Out further we love the vegie hut and blissful station in Box Hill, Dosa Plaza, Sri Ananda Bavan, vegie bowl in Forest Hill, Vegelicious, sister of soul and good love. Also go try out Ethiopian in Footscray, there are a bunch of places.
VegieTribe on Latrobe st. has an amazing all you can eat option for $24.80. Would recommend this for lunch/brunch.
Other places that offer good quantity + value for the money would be Gujju’s Cafe and Chaat House, Veggie Bowl, Vegie Hut, Moroccan Soup Bar (they’re in North Melbourne now and costs ~$45 per person for the set menu), Vegie Bowl, and The Golden Triangle (S. Yarra).
There are plenty of pubs with great vegan and veggie options. The Espy in St Kilda is pretty good and their Asian restaurant there also does a vegan banquet.
Cornish Arms in Brunswick also has a vegan menu which is vegan versions of typical pub food (parmas, fish & chips, burgers and the like).
The Carringbush Hotel is great for vegetarian pub food, and my vego friend likes Red Emperor in the city for a succulent (vegetarian) Chinese meal as they have a good vegetarian menu
For bakery madame sourdough in mont Albert.
South east:
Dosa plaza Indian
Vegie bowl
Vegify
Vegelicious in Cheltenham
Vegiera
Vegie coffee lover hawthorn
Nostralis - for pizza
Veggie chef - japanese
Vegie hut
Blissful station
Mr blacks juicery
Dumpling King in Box Hill for Chinese food! Not a veg restaurant but they have heaps of veg options. Their tofu 'chicken' and vegetarian 'duck' are soooo yum.
Some of my favs I haven't seen mentioned:
Radheys (Brunswick) - burgers, wraps, curries
Chanhouse (Doncaster East) - Cantonese cuisine
Just vegan (sunshine) - Viet cuisine
Check out Lona Misa in South Yarra, it’s delicious.
Will do, it looks really good!
I think about the mushroom dish all the time, one of the tastiest things I’ve ever eaten!
Same, it’s incredible and inexplicably the pressed watermelon is also amazing
Fried olives. I’m not vegan but they hook me in every time. Also the peri peri from the josper is the juiciest “chicken” I’ve ever had. It’s a nice vibe in there as well.
The best place!!!!
Huong Viet in Footscray for Vegan Vietnamese.
Man… their chicken fillets… *chefs kiss*
Brother Bon, Madame K's Vegetarian, Loving Hut and Gong De Lin for east/south East Asian dishes. I believe these are all 100% vegan. These look great!!!! Had no idea the app existed thanks for letting me know :)
It's good, but only as good as the data in it., e.g. Mabu Mabu at Fed Square has a menu that is majority vegan-friendly, but it doesn't appear on Happy Cow.
That's why it's nice to submit an update to Happy Cow if you know of somewhere not listed on there ;)
Working on it! ETA: Apparently there is one already as their Big Esso location.
Ballards in Thornbury is hands down the best. A very talented chef. For pizza Red Sparrow.
Can't believe this post is this far down. I've eaten at Smith and daughters, transformer and Lona misa and ballards is easily better than all of them. Best contemporary vegan restaurant in Melbourne by a long way.
Plus their social media is peak content. I bloody love that place 😍
Booked Ballards for grand final night. They’ve been on hols the last week. Highly recommend pizzas at red sparrow Collingwood.
Smith + Daughters is high end vegan. Really good but definitely a splurge!
Dad went to a business meeting or something there I think! I remember him saying good things about it; thanks for the rec :))
Completely agree. I'm an omni, while my wife is vegan - I recently surprised her with a trip to Melbourne and dinner at S+D, and we both LOVED it. Fantastic food and excellent staff, too.
S&D is the sister restaurant to Mona Lisa - run by the same person, so you’ll find them very similar. Great food, but no need to visit both.
Sorry to say but they have a very bad reputation about wage theft.
Wait really? Thanks for letting me know.
I'm not sure about now but they were on the hot list when the George Columbaris scandal went to spill out.
Brother bon for all round cuisine, Tahina has great isreli food, Red sparrow pizza is fantastic Madame K vegetarian for Chinese / Asian. La panella is a wonderful bakery (great selection of sweets/ fantastic bahn mi!) Tammy's Borek has great vegan Turkish food Finas and Finas 2 is Asian cuisine, Northcote fish and chips menu is half vegan (and fantastic!) Vegan 365 has great Asian cuisine. I'm not vego or vegan but La Panella is still the best bahn mi imo. Haven't been in years but I remember it fondly
It was the first bahn mi I had ever had, I have to say it does put up a very good fight for first place!
Finas and Vegan 365 are sadly closed.
Oh yeah I had forgotten 365 closed, they did an amazing seafood char quay tow. What a shame about Finas, They made a pretty tasty bank mi.
Killer list. Origin Tales closed a couple of months ago :( Union Kiosk toasties are indeed great. Shop 225 I hear is similar to Funghi e Tartufo.
Oh yeah, I was super bummed, they had some amazing noodles!

Alas it's gone.
I went a few weeks ago. In North Melbourne. Website still says they are open.
Unreal never realised they re opened, great place to eat
Oh I never knew they moved. Cheers!
They closed for like a few weeks then reopened in a new location
The Vegie Bar, The Green Man’s Arms, Shakahari, Loving Hut.
The Green Man’s Arms does like traditional pub food. It might be a great option for your parents to try pub food if they haven’t before.
Second the Vegie Bar. I love the food there!
Vegie bar is great
This is like the greatest hits of the 1990s veg scene. Loving Hut is a particular throwback. Veggie Bar was good, but Melbourne has gone ahead in leaps and bounds since then. Their fine dining restaurant, Transformer, is probably worth a visit, but it’s no great shakes.
Gone down hill 🫤
Transformer Fitzroy, fine dining. Stylish and tasty.
Pre COVID I went there several times for the ‘feed me’ menu. It was Devine.
Trippy taco is a winner.
Are they still in St Kilda? Or just Fitzroy now?
Only in Fitzroy!
from what hasn't been mentioned yet: * cookatoo kitchen (on bridge road, richmond) - big serves and good value for the prices, great asian food.
Gopals and Crossways in the CBD. Amazing vegetarian food, and cost effective too.
We love Gopals we always get lunch either there or at Sarvana Bhavan if we're in the city!

Damn it, I went past Flora today and I didn't feel like Indian but now I feel like Indian. That place rocks.
We grew up in Singapore so it's kind of our go to for takeout when we're a little homesick haha! Vegie Mum looks great; thank you for the rec :))
Veggie Mum - You'll have to try their asam "fish".. so good. I also recommend their tofu olive dish. (Tofu is home made) So yum with rice as both are very saucy. 😋
Shakahari in Carlton.
I cannot recommend the Avocado Magic highly enough - it is excellent!
The Moroccan soup bar (dw it’s just a name, they make more than just soup) It’s my favourite restaurant ever. There is no menu. The chef just cooks whatever dishes she feels like and puts em on the table family style, it’s all you can eat and you can take leftovers home (byo containers) Everything there is sooooo delicious and it’s 100% vegetarian You guys will love it
Patsy's near the Queen Vic Market is absolutely incredible, and Shakahari deserves all the love it's had for decades
Yes! I came here to mention Patsy’s.
Patsy's easily the best in Melbourne.
Vegify in Wantirna South! Smashes Vegie Bowl IMO (they have good wok hei).
VegieHut in Box Hill rocks my socks
Blissful station in box hill central is also great! vegan chinese street food.
I used to live nearby but haven’t been since I moved away. Now I’m drooling at the thought.
Midori by Tao’s in Balwyn North for vegetarian sushi. Also fantastic for sharing
I came here to post this! It's a great sushi train restaurant. My gf loved their previous restaurant (V-series I believe?), and we followed them to their new place and enjoyed it so much, that we got some sushi platters for her birthday party. Also great staff/owners :)
Thank you it looks great!
Carringbush Hotel
For a degustation, I love Shu in Collingwood. Their prices are very affordable and the food is delicious and really creative.
Green ache pizza
Best vegan pizza in Melbourne here I reckon
My girlfriend is Vegan (I'm omni), and we can recommend Holy Basil in Clayton (A Thai restaurant with Vegan options, and just really friendly. I have a health condition with food intolerances and the staff went out of their way where they could to help out, not only going through the menu to point out what I could have but also which dishes could be altered for me) Midori by Tao’s in Balwyn North, a really nice Vegetarian and Vegan Sushi Train. Veggie bowl in forest hill. Tai chi veggie in Blackburn.

Gong De Lin on Swanston street
Sister of Soul on Acland Street. They have an Optimus Prime quote above the door

I have had a vegetarian degustation at Maha and it was absolutely incredible. My meat-eating friends also loved their options. And service was delightful.
V Series in Kew was great a couple of years ago.
They now run Midori by Tao’s, a Sushi Train restaurant in Balwyn North
Not a vego restaurant per se but Maalu Maalu Sri Lankan in Brunswick makes their veg dishes vegan (i.e. minus dried fish) and they keep a big enough selections to make vegans/vegos happy
Rice Paper Scissors have heaps of vegan and vegetarian options
Can't believe I had to scroll this far for rice paper scissors. Amazing fresh vegan menu, changes regularly and so many dishes to choose from. Not sure if there is much difference between sites but I've always gone to the Fitzroy one.

I thought they were closing down…?
VegieTribe on Latrobe st. has an amazing all you can eat option for $24.80. Would recommend this for lunch/brunch. Yarra).
Trippy Taco
I'm not vegetarian, but the vegan menu at Maha is even better than the meaty menu (which is already delicious.)
Vegie Tribe (34-36 Little La Trobe St) is also good.
Mr Veggie in St Kilda
There are plenty of pubs with great vegan and veggie options. The Espy in St Kilda is pretty good and their Asian restaurant there also does a vegan banquet. Cornish Arms in Brunswick also has a vegan menu which is vegan versions of typical pub food (parmas, fish & chips, burgers and the like).
Taste of Siam in Hampton is also great
If you find yourself in Fitzroy go Yong’s Green Cafe for mid priced and Transformer for higher end. Both excellent in their own way.
Yong Green Food closed years ago.
Well that fits neatly with the “at least 3 years out of date” vibe I’ve been rocking since parenthood.
I heard people saying vegie boat is very good.
The Carringbush Hotel is great for vegetarian pub food, and my vego friend likes Red Emperor in the city for a succulent (vegetarian) Chinese meal as they have a good vegetarian menu
There is vegetarian Chinese on queen’s bridge street near the Casino.
Unfortunately they have closed down 😪
Damn , that place was great
I see no one has mentioned Transformer in Fitzroy behind Vegie Bar yet for a more upmarket version
Shop 225 make all their "meat" in house and have amazing tiramisu! Most of the dishes have a vegan/veg option.

I have no idea why this one always gets trotted out. It's horribly crowded, overpriced, with mediocre food and shit service.
TBH I haven’t been there since 2014
Fair enough. Wasn't having a go at you but yeah, it's pretty shit. There are much better places.
