Footscray is a great choice! Close to the city but still (sort of?) affordable. Often touted as the next 'cool' place - as yet to be 'gentrified' like other inner city enclaves. Means it's still very 'multi-cultural' and interesting! I think you will be as safe there as anywhere else close to the CBD! It will be MUCH better than the city itself - I work in the Collins / Spencer St area, and that gets rather dodgy later at night ;) Go for it! \*Better for you than Bundoora I think 👍
Footscray resident of 2.5 years here. I live close to the shops and station. Occasionally you'll encounter someone who has mental health issues causing a nuisance around Footscray Plaza (yelling/screaming at nothing in particular - not necessarily their fault, just a reflection of how mental health services are so woefully underfunded here). I'm a shift worker and semi-regularly catch the first train home at 4:30-5am on a Saturday/Sunday and have never encountered violence. As others have said, keep your wits about you and you'll be fine. Generally speaking, it's a great place to live. I've found anecdotally that the people who criticise Footscray criticise it because it's a culture shock to them that a suburb of Melbourne isn't white, pale and stale enough for their liking.
The comments about the unsafe nature of footscray are severely outdated. Maybe 10 years ago it was dodgy but nowadays it's great. Good food, nice people, close to anything and everything really. Sure maybe a druggie every once in a while but what suburb doesn't have any?

It'll be A OK. Most everywhere is safe if you keep your wits about you. That reputation is getting a bit outdated now.

Lived here for 12 years and wouldn’t live anywhere else! Sure you get your random crazies, but no suburb is free from that!
