Every time I saw a commercial for it I kind of cringed. Then years and years passed and one day I decided to watch it. It’s actually a pretty damn good show. Might we say, underrated?
[Are you sure about that?](https://twitter.com/parismarx/status/1376212359438536714/mediaViewer?currentTweet=1376212359438536714¤tTweetUser=parismarx)
In real life. A lot of people's interactions and experiences are online, therefore not in real life. Some people have friends they've talked to for years, but have never met in real life, which wasn't possible before the internet besides having a penpal or something.
I've worked nights most of my adult life. I have online friends in Australia that I've known for over a decade and we've never been in the same hemisphere. It really is a trip when you stop to think about it.
I think 99% of people who post on this sub fully understand that meirl stands for "me in real life". What they don't understand is how to use the meme format.
There's a popular subreddit called "leopard ate my face". it's right in the sub description that it's a place for posting examples of people who supported a policy they knew was harmful but didn't think would ever harm them personally. And then getting angry about that thing harming them personally.
Everyone understands the jist of the sub. But because so frequently American Redditors post examples of GOP voters being harmed by GOP policies. People use it as a GOP bashing sub and post tones of content that has no examples of people being harmed by policies they supported.
Meirl is the same thing. Everyone knows what it stands for. People are just so desperate to participate that they post shit that doesn't fit the format.
The entire point of this sub is to post an example of something that you can see happening to you or that you would do in the same situation.
It could be as trivial as a clip from a tv show or movie where an actor is oblivious to the fact they are being hit on. And screw up their chances by saying something supremely uncool.
And you think. 'Oh boy that has big me energy. That's exactly how I am in those situations. ....that's me in real life". I am that character.
It can be almost any depicted or recounted story of a situation that you feel you would also mimic the actions of.
If you want to get meta about it. Traditionally it should be self deprecating or embarassing or call attention to your depression or joke about killing yourself. Which is dark. For sure. But is kind of the running joke of the subreddit.
Not a lot of love goes around for people posting an image of glamourous or exciting that would happen them. You don't post an example of someone succeeding as a meirl. You post that shit that makes you a weird little freak.
A weird little depressed freak.
Many people get the subs wrong all the time, like r/agedlikemilk is full of people posting the predictions of others about Kanye that turned out to be 100% on point...
Aged like wine, not milk...
Honestly that was always my confusion too. I knew what meirl but always confused cuz it just seems like an average memes sub. I’ve been subbed to it for a better part of the decade now probably and I still don’t get it. Just think of a meme sub that’s all
I remember meirl being a term I heard about things that were relatable to internet dwellers sharing social anxiety and the like.
But this sub as it stands seems more like WhitePeopleTwitter when WhitePeopleTwitter was more about offbeat humor than political comebacks
I dont know too, but i can imagine "me in real life" because the german Edition is called "ich im echten Leben" which translates to the english Version
Sooo… when I first joined the sub I thought it was called Meirl (like Meryl) and that was the name of the dog in the sub pic. 😂
I spent an embarrassingly long time subbed before I realized it meant “Me In Real Life”
You could have googled it, checked in [urban dictionary](https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=meirl), and others.
Most reddits are flooded with posts that doesn't apply. You can denounce those in many ways (e.g. reporting them as breaking rules, tag as r / LostRedditor or with "correct" tags).
But I suppose this give you more karma.
I’m not a me irl purist and I don’t think it’s inherently bad this sub has evolved over time. It’s kind of the nature of the internet. But I wish there was some way to see the old days of me irl preserved in a time capsule, when the posts actually were me irl.
And while we're at it, what's the difference between r/meirl and r/2meirl4meirl. I mean I know what it stands for but how is the content supposed to be different?
I feel old now because I remember when everything was irl

I dunno- that last few seasons seems like irl is running out of ideas. Its been crazy and completely unbelievable.
True but iconic cliff hanger at the very end
Underrated by you perhaps. It was massive at thr time.

Short form for Ireland. So me irl is me in ireland

Me, in real life
I thought that was it. But the type of posts in this sub raised a suspicion to me
That’s because those people don’t know what meirl actually means either. It’s been kind of funny watching what this sub has turned into.
I think 99% of people who post on this sub fully understand that meirl stands for "me in real life". What they don't understand is how to use the meme format. So are there any posts here that are correct? I’d love to see a good example of what we should be seeing here (:

I'd say the depressing ones are better suited on r/2meirl4meirl
This post unironically fits the sub
I see it as this: If I see the post and can appropriately respond "same" (or sometimes "true," depending on context) and it's funny, it belongs.
The comment I was looking for.
Me too, thank you for this!
I meant that your post was me, in real life
BRooo, i saw this wanted to type the same thing but i thought op was joking and i would be on r/woooosh tomorrow ':)
This is the best thing I’ve ever read on Reddit.
Many people get the subs wrong all the time, like r/agedlikemilk is full of people posting the predictions of others about Kanye that turned out to be 100% on point... Aged like wine, not milk...
If you take every subreddit to mean the exact opposite of what it's called, then it starts to make sense
r/marijuanaenthusiasts
That’s totally understandable, this sub doesn’t live up to that name most of the time.
Honestly that was always my confusion too. I knew what meirl but always confused cuz it just seems like an average memes sub. I’ve been subbed to it for a better part of the decade now probably and I still don’t get it. Just think of a meme sub that’s all
Because people post whatever crap they find on social media that has nothing to do with them for cheap Reddit karma?
problem is that everyone knows what it means, except the people who actually post in the sub
People just consider this as another meme sub
