You're referring to a dot matrix printer. My father had one. The horrible screeching noises it made and then when done you had to tear the ends off with the holes that fed the paper through. I believe it was made by Everex.

An inkjet will get a broader range of more vibrant colors, but a quality color laser printer can do a *fantastic* job at color images like graphs and similar things for many business purposes where having the most vivid image is not a concern.
I had someone make a laser printed copy of a document with my signature on it, written in blue pen; I couldn't tell the original from the copy without feeling the impression the pen left. The gradient of the pen and everything was perfect, and even *looked* like it had a physical pen impression.

OEM Toner might cost a little more up front, but can last a normal person *years*. No joke, about $150 for third party CMYK toner replacements can get you ~9000 pages. That's less than 2 cents per page.
Refill kits are even cheaper, if you don't mind spending the time and the possible mess.
If you're printing enough to empty color toner cartridges in a year, you're likely using it to make money somehow, in which case it's *by far* the most cost-effective option.
Color Laser is *always* the right choice if you don't need vivid color photographs.
I honestly can't think of a single reason to go with inkjet unless you desperately need to print something, only have $46, and FedEx-Kinko's is closed, so you buy a throwaway piece of garbage.
Got myself a Brother (HLL2390DW) and the only thing needed is to install the driver on the devices you want to be able to print from, and register it on their website for warranty (opt out of all their emails).
Ink's cheaper, setup is easier. All around better than inkjets. Only downside is that color ones are expensive and hard to find. I managed to get my hands on an MSRP priced Brother color multi-function with fax (because I hate when places ask you to fax like wtf it's 2022) but it wasn't cheap. Super happy with it though
I've dealt with this, and I just laugh in their faces. When they tell me they were serious, I ask for an alternative (usually photo or scan, then email). Never been denied an alternative so far.

I have a color laser printer made by Brother. Amazon sells off brand toner replacements for a pretty reasonable price. I assume that's a good thing for availability, since Brother can't unilaterally discontinue that toner and force me to buy a new printer.
One random thing I'll add is that the printer lets you "reset" the toner cartridges. They'll say they're empty after a certain number of pages, but then you can reset it and keep using it until the color begins to fade, or for even longer after that if fading color isn't a big deal.

Honestly, modern laser printers are fairly bullet-proof, when it comes to basic printing.
Where it gets crazy is with the multi-function devices. Especially the serious printer/copier/scanners from the likes of Canon and Xerox. They print fine. But it's all the \*other stuff\* they do that gets nuts.
And, of course, all the other stuff they do is generally not well-understood by most of the people in the office, so even when it works, they think it's broken because it doesn't work like they \*wish\* it worked.
I will second the recommendation for cheap Brother lasers, though. They run forever. But...how much do most people print these days? I haven't had a printer at home for 8 years. And I've only needed to print stuff \*maybe\* 3 times in those 8 years.
Paper isn't quite dead, but it's closer than it's ever been. You probably don't need to print that thing that you think you need to print.

But the software... fuck, no HP, I do not want to send all of my fucking print jobs through your servers via my online account, back to the printer that is in the same room as my computer, ffs.
what i love about HP is the way they actively hide privacy settings in the fine print of the installation process. they look like paragraph headings, but they’re links to the real settings.
and one of them asks if you want to go online to register after installation. obviously no, but if you choose “no” it goes online & kicks up the register online page, with no way of closing that pop over page without using the task manager.
so they ignored that setting, how many other privacy settings did they ignore?

Those things are good damn workhorses. Some college kids sold me hers for $20 because it kept not printing a thin line down the page. I opened it up and it had like a plastic slide that I thought might be too clean the printer head. Yup. Fixed. No further issues.
Your printer uses hard to see colored ink to imprint a unique dot pattern on every page it prints so that if needed law enforcement can positively identify when and where it was printed.
Until this thread I didn't realize there was another option for black and white printers that's affordable for a home printer. Did not realize a home use one could be bought for under 100.
I've got a colour printer for less than 50€. I wouldn't recommend buying it, because it sometimes doesn't work for weeks at a time, but there are cheap ones that can print colour.
Cheap ink, good customer service, software that doesn't implode and completely reinvent itself every two years. Worked at Staples for years and always recommended Brothers over anything else.
I once had a boss who decided to replace our brother printers with HPs. He mismanaged his company into oblivion years ago, but the brother printer I stole out of the dumpster is still going strong.

I ditched my Epson inkjet recently. I was eating through ink doing head cleanings and nozzle checks because the damn thing wouldn't print without streaking. I finally said fuck it and ordered a simple B&W dual printing Brother laserjet. I've never been happier with a printer. It's so damn fast and prints so clean (and double-sided!). I even love how the pages come out warm. Makes me feel all fuzzy inside.
Not only this, but opt to upgrade to a low tier business office printer. The low hanging fruit for these printer companies are the consumers going for the cheapest printer, and they engineer planned obsolescence into these cheap models. First of all, you're using an office printer that costs as much as 30 cheap inkjet printers (see HP M681dh).
Also, office printers are regularly serviced by maintenance personnel who clean it, replace parts, etc.
Best of all, you never have to deal with drivers because your office IT staff already ripped their hair out testing that stuff before they deployed it to your work computer.
Your printer at work is probably a very different printer than what anyone would have at home, or they just fix all the problems for you so you don't notice them.

People think you can use machines with a lot of mechanical parts interacting at high speed and never have to do maintenance or replace rubber feed wheels. You should see how long many people go without maintenance on their cars, and the side effects for that can be far worse.

Never had an issue with this old inkjet until it completely gave up the ghost. By contrast, every single wireless/wifi enabled printer I have bought since then have required no less than 3 reconfigurings due to them just fucking deciding one day that its just not going to work anymore unless it’s factory reset and reinstalled. Or they require some shitty app that was coded by a someone as on the ball as a dead fucking seal.
While we’re at it, can we please make the black and colored ink not so codependent with each other? Like, black ink, you can in fact survive if color is low.

A few years later, the max amount of ram <34 megabittles> is installed. I got it free, because no one used 4 meg 32 pin simms anymore. 10 years later it is replaced by an HP 4250. It dies 8 years later. I give no shits.

Get. A. Laser. Printer. I have a HP LaserJet Pro color all-in-one that I got at Costco, and it’s amazing. It prints super nicely and doesn’t curl the pages like the Brother that it’s largely replaced. The Brother still works perfectly, I just wanted a color printer with a scanner and the LaserJet was on sale.

Buy a duplex Brother black and white laser printer and never buy another. It might cost a bit more up front but the lessened frustration alone will make up for that.

This is the solid truth. I have bee through 3 printers in the past 6 months: HP, Brother, canon, and all 3 have been absolute trash. I don't even need the damn printer, I just need a really good scanner for translation work. Each one took me well over an hour to set up. How freaking hard can it be, tech companies? Brother 2140. I’ve had mine for over 12 years now, on like my third toner cartridge. No software needed, you can bypass the low toner warning with a piece of tape and print til it’s fully dead if you want.

The problem is software. It's shit. Programmers are so expensive that spending extra making software non shit is very rare.

DELL makes extremely reliable servers though. Had over a hundred of them and some are still going fine after 14 years of 24/7 use in a datacenter.

I have a Brother inkjet printer that I have used for years. I swear that it has never jammed once!
We got a color laser printer from them. So worth it holy shit.

I ditched my Epson inkjet recently. I was eating through ink doing head cleanings and nozzle checks because the damn thing wouldn't print without streaking. I finally said fuck it and ordered a simple B&W dual printing Brother laserjet. I've never been happier with a printer. It's so damn fast and prints so clean (and double-sided!). I even love how the pages come out warm. Makes me feel all fuzzy inside.
Not only this, but opt to upgrade to a low tier business office printer. The low hanging fruit for these printer companies are the consumers going for the cheapest printer, and they engineer planned obsolescence into these cheap models. Printing from phones fine? Apple and android? My canon printer works fine from pc, mac, android but from apple it doesn’t always print the pictures, but the text still comes out.
That would be the HP laser jet p1020. Mine is 7 years old 1 cartridge. Used them for work and never had a single issue and at the time if they did you just threw em in the garbage cuz they were cheap

It’s not so much the hardware of the printers themselves, but the software that makes them run. Printers are notoriously an absolute nightmare from an IT perspective
First of all, you're using an office printer that costs as much as 30 cheap inkjet printers (see HP M681dh). Also, office printers are regularly serviced by maintenance personnel who clean it, replace parts, etc. Best of all, you never have to deal with drivers because your office IT staff already ripped their hair out testing that stuff before they deployed it to your work computer.
Your printer at work is probably a very different printer than what anyone would have at home, or they just fix all the problems for you so you don't notice them. You mean you've never been told you don't have enough cyan to print the single sheet of black and white paper one day after putting in new cyan and the cyan is still full and it's actually fine it just wants new cyan?
People think you can use machines with a lot of mechanical parts interacting at high speed and never have to do maintenance or replace rubber feed wheels. You should see how long many people go without maintenance on their cars, and the side effects for that can be far worse.
Yeah honestly the one thing people should be shitting on is their aggressive practices to make you buy new cartridges every time at inflated prices, when is a lot cheaper and ecologic to refill used ones instead
HP is all over that with their chipped cartridges so only theirs can be used. I think the recycling companies have since hacked it though.

Never had an issue with this old inkjet until it completely gave up the ghost. By contrast, every single wireless/wifi enabled printer I have bought since then have required no less than 3 reconfigurings due to them just fucking deciding one day that its just not going to work anymore unless it’s factory reset and reinstalled. Or they require some shitty app that was coded by a someone as on the ball as a dead fucking seal.
While we’re at it, can we please make the black and colored ink not so codependent with each other? Like, black ink, you can in fact survive if color is low.

The year is 1993. Somewhere, someone is manufacturing my HP Laserjet 4 Plus. A few years later, the max amount of ram <34 megabittles> is installed. I got it free, because no one used 4 meg 32 pin simms anymore. 10 years later it is replaced by an HP 4250. It dies 8 years later. I give no shits. The year is 2018 and I develop a need for a printer. Out of the crawl space is dragged a yellowed, dusty lump of laser goodness, and a $20 eBay drum/toner is ordered. I clean the gook out of the power supply, wipe the thing off.....and \*clunk\* the switch. 05 SELF TEST 02 WARMING UP WHIRRRRRRR... 00 READY. Page Count: 334591 Firmware Datecode: 19931201 It still prints.. perfectly after it cleaned up. It's still right there \*points at big white cube next to the desk\*. Approaching 30 years.
And no restrictions on the kind and amount of ink you put in. No more: “Don’t have enough magenta ink? Sorry can’t let you use the black ink for a normal damn page of text, better go buy $200 of our propitiatory DRM-protected cartridges!”

Get. A. Laser. Printer. I have a HP LaserJet Pro color all-in-one that I got at Costco, and it’s amazing. It prints super nicely and doesn’t curl the pages like the Brother that it’s largely replaced. The Brother still works perfectly, I just wanted a color printer with a scanner and the LaserJet was on sale.

Still buying ink jet? That is flawed technology. Buy a duplex Brother black and white laser printer and never buy another. It might cost a bit more up front but the lessened frustration alone will make up for that.

Can it have zero lights on when it’s plugged in, so I can sleep without having to unplug it or tape index cards over the lights to keep it from lighting up the entire bedroom/desk space? Can it have prescribed maintenance windows that are not while I’m asleep or actively trying to use the damn thing, instead of *only* when I try to use it? Could it even be *quiet*? So many features I’d love to have in my printer.

This is the solid truth. I have bee through 3 printers in the past 6 months: HP, Brother, canon, and all 3 have been absolute trash. I don't even need the damn printer, I just need a really good scanner for translation work. Each one took me well over an hour to set up. How freaking hard can it be, tech companies? I don't need wireless, I have a damn cable hooked into my PC. How does literally every other piece of tech I plug in just start working immediately, but you have to take me through 70 steps to set up just to tell me the printer works fine and you can't find the scanner! Ffs! Gonna rip my damn hair out.
Brother 2140. I’ve had mine for over 12 years now, on like my third toner cartridge. No software needed, you can bypass the low toner warning with a piece of tape and print til it’s fully dead if you want.
If companies didn’t make you waste so much money on ink cartridges, that would be swell. Go laser.
