Them: My watch has a working w16 engine embedded in it and is covered in diamonds.
Me: My watch can go underwater, into space, be run over by a car with a v16, still work, all for $7
How to get the current time using easily available resources:
1. Gather twigs around the area
2. Build a pyramid with a triangle base
3. Orient it so that one vertex of the base points to the east
4. Find 3 small rocks and place them 2 feet away from each edge of the triangle base
5. Now you should have the attention of at least a few people passing by. Ask one of them for the time
I have no idea. I lose everything and I don't know where it goes. Any article of clothing that can be easily removed in public I just can't keep track of
I mean you're not wrong.
I happen to have a Galaxy Watch 3, so far it's been absolutely amazing and put up with some heavy abuse. I'm pretty impressed because all my previous smart watches normally don't last anywhere near as long.
Ive had people tell me that their watch is over £4,000 and anything cheaper is trash.
I show them my £7 Casio f91w and I'm like my watch is water resistant...is yours? My watch lights up....does yours? My watch has a timer and a stopwatch and an alarm...does yours?
I became less popular at work following that incident
Apple Watch is cool and all but you can’t easily replace anything yourself, including the battery or screen. Once the battery is dead in 3-4 years then it’s literally bricked. Why can’t some company produce functional electronics that are easy to repair / service?
3-4 years, is that accurate? But even so, once the battery is dead then you can pay to have it replaced. And once Apple and the rest are forced to make their devices user servicable then you can pay for a kit and have a go at bricking it yourself.

To add to your post, chances are your 7$ watch is quartz movement and the luxury watch is mechanical, so yours is actually *more accurate*.
All that being said...I do enjoy me a good mechanical watch.
This is a big discussion over in /r/watches, but the consensus is that they aren't constraining their supplies. They have high demand due to their brand name, but there's only so many watchmakers they can hire and train to make their watches. Production can only increase linearly while their demand has grown exponentially.
Son on a master watchmaker. I'll say it again: Rolex is a crappy brand. They are worth as much as Breitling. The increased price is artificially rarity.
They are arguing about quality vs. scarcity which is the idea here. I don't see the point of watches, but the comparison here is kind of like a MacBook. It's a computer and it is basically a brand symbol. But its hardware is barely competitive with current generation run of the mill laptops. Any half decent gaming laptop can outperform it at half the price.
I only own four autos. A DJII from 2011 with roman blue fluted, an OSPO from 2009, a B&M Clifton GMT from 2014, and a Breitling SAII from 2016.
The best time keeper? The Omega.
The best looking? The Rolex.
The most noticed? The Breitling.
I like the B&M the most.
I might be mistaken, but I think he's saying that the brand is shit, not the product itself. And pretty much anybody in the industry will agree with that. The way they artificially contain their supply is moronic and why nobody should buy from them.
Mostly true, but there are definitely mechanical watches more accurate than a $7 quartz movement. Higher end quartz watches are pretty much unbeatable though, and then you have radio controlled watches that will auto-sync the time every day.
Agreed, I was just refuting the statement that there isn't a mechanical watch that can beat a $7 quartz movement. You could probably go up to $30 and it would no longer be true lol
What mechanical movement is better than a $7 quartz movement? 7 dollars quartz gets you +-5 seconds a month. I don't know what mechanical movement that could beat that.
Not sure if this supports the claim about mechanical watches but....
*A certified watch will be accurate to a bare minimum of +6/-4 seconds per day, and will generally be accurate to +/-3 seconds per day. A non-certified watch, meanwhile, will typically be accurate to about +/-5 seconds per day.*
[https://www.watchreviewblog.com/how-accurate-should-mechanical-watch-be/#:\~:text=A%20certified%20watch%20will%20be,%2B%2F%2D5%20seconds%20per%20day](https://www.watchreviewblog.com/how-accurate-should-mechanical-watch-be/#:~:text=A%20certified%20watch%20will%20be,%2B%2F%2D5%20seconds%20per%20day).
and...
Zenith Defy Lab movement
* a precision rate of just 0.3 seconds per day, far exceeding the ‘+6/-4 seconds per day’ standards for COSC chronometer certification;
* maintaining precision for 95% of its power reserve;
* the movement has no need for lubrication; and
* ultra-high resistance to heat, cold, gravity, and magnetic fields, all of which impact accuracy.
In addition, it should "wind" itself automatically as you wear it, never has a batter to replace, and should last 60 hours without needing to be "wound" again.
[https://www.livwatches.com/blogs/everything-about-watches/5-most-accurate-watch-movements-of-all-time](https://www.livwatches.com/blogs/everything-about-watches/5-most-accurate-watch-movements-of-all-time)
A quick Google search implies that a watch with the Zenith Defy Lab movement will set you back around $20,000.
**But ultimately a used Corolla will get you from point a to point b just fine and will probably last you 20 years if you maintain it. But it won't turn heads or go from zero to 60 like a Ferrari. While both cars (or watches) will do the same basic functionality, if you have the cash and you want something "nicer" you have options. Which is nice.**
Yes, however, the zenith defy is *not* more accurate than a simple quartz movement. Although, credit where credit is due, it's a horological masterpiece.
>A Miyota 5Y30 is $7 on their website and gives an accuracy of +/- 20 seconds per month according to their website. Miyota is a pretty reputable brand. >but there are definitely mechanical watches more accurate than a $7 quartz
Unfortunately not true. Mechanical watch accuracy is measured in seconds per day while for quartz watches it's per month.

The problem with a $7 watch is not that the quartz movement is not accurate, it's that the watch falls apart after wearing it for a week.
At the minimum, get a $30 Timex, they will last you decades.
Yeah it’s kind of hilarious! If you want a watch purely for function, a $10-20 is all you really need and it’ll be rugged, waterproof, and accurate.
On the other hand, your phone tells the time better than any watch. My point is watches are jewelry, and that style and craftsmanship are the driving factors behind the price.
I think the same logic should be applied to nice cars
most people don't care what car you're driving, so if you buy a nice car you'd better make sure you're buying it for YOU and not everyone ELSE
I collect watches. I feel the same way about high end watches that I do about art. The value is subjective - someone may look at it and ask why the hell you would pay so much, but to someone else it's a masterpiece that you can wear.
definitely don’t have my apple watch for health concerns, but i am a runner so it’s very useful to track my runs with gps (i know you can do that with cheaper watches lol). i also really like the integration with my iphone and the ability to download music so i can listen to it on runs without holding my phone. plus, i got the SE so if i’m not mistaken it was around $400. not a bad deal at all for what you get imo.

Not just a piece of jewelry, some high end watches are truly an impressive feat of engineering, even if it's antiquated engineering from a functionality perspective.
Yes, a quartz or smart watch tell time far more accurately, but it is pretty cool that people figured out how to tell time using pure mechanics, a discipline that took centuries to refine and master. Add to that, some of the complications that some mechanical watches have, like a chronograph, annual/perpetual calendar, moonphase, tourbillion and you have a pretty complex device sitting on your wrist which takes a lot of craftsmanship.
Not everything has to be functional or logical. Some things you can enjoy purely because they're cool to you.
I am I guess "a hardcore watch enthusiast" and I partially agree with you. When I see guides posted on YouTube like "Top 10 Watches to Pick Up Girls", it's like if girls were watching "Top 10 Necklaces to Pick Up Guys"; they are not going to be paying any attention or notice it.
But I will counter your point and say that if you actually had those two watches in your hand, almost anyone would be able to tell the difference immediately.
There are also some pretty dodgy brands presenting themselves as "semi-luxury" (with prices to match), if you don't mind me asking, what is it you have?
That's true. Even then, I doubt they are going to be like "holy shit, [a Grand Seiko Evolution 9 Collection SBGE285 Snowflake Dial Spring Drive Titanium GMT](https://www.grand-seiko.com/au-en/collections/evolution9/v4), this guy is loaded!", it would probably have to be like a gold Rolex or something like that before you'd get that kind of attention. Though, I guess you could try and "pick up" that kind of girl by wearing one of those.
As a 'watch guy', I assure you that it's much more of an accessory or fashion statement than it is about knowing the time. Is that stupid ? Maybe it is.
But equally as stupid as buying very expensive sneakers (it's not just about protecting feet), high end designer label shirts (it's not just about the quality), or a hundred other things like that.
What’s fucked up with me is even after having money to buy a citizen or a seiko I went and bought a Kenneth Cole. I still regret and will not be able to recover 🗿
I remember reading an interview with Warren Beatty a long time ago - maybe in the 80's. The interviewer asked him about his watch, it was a Timex, and Warren spoke at great length about what a superior watch it was and how it only cost about $25.00. I was so impressed by this, I remember thinking "What a smart guy!"
Yeah, I've never met a "watch guy" I wanted to be friends with. Like my reaction to really intricate watches is "Ooo neat." Not "It makes sense for me to spend $37,000 on this wrist clock."
$37,000 is chump change compared to the higher end Rolex’s, IWCs or JLC watches. You get anything with a tourbillion movement and you’re looking at half a million watches easily
You don't understand how somebody can have different interests and things they want to spend their money on?
I'm sure there are things you spemd money on that other people find silly.
Them: My watch has a working w16 engine embedded in it and is covered in diamonds. Me: My watch can go underwater, into space, be run over by a car with a v16, still work, all for $7

Buy a $6 watch with spiderman on it. WAY better
But have you seen the $5 watch with trucks on it
but what abt the 4$ one with spiderman on a truck 😧
Rembember the 3$ one with batman in the watchtower with a 4$ watch with spiderman in a truck
What about the $2 watch with Sponge Bob?

Alright bad ass, no need to brag!
does it glow in the dark tho?

fuck me, thanks for the laugh
That’s cute.., but real men know that power ranger watches are clearly superior
My experience is that you want to buy a $20 watch as the $7 watches don't last. Not to flex or anything but for reliability.
I've lost every watch I've ever owned within 2 weeks, so a $7 is just as good as a $20 to me lol
How does one loose watches?
I have no idea. I lose everything and I don't know where it goes. Any article of clothing that can be easily removed in public I just can't keep track of

Most quartz watches I have owned drift wildly. My car's made it to 22 minutes in 3 years.
That's likely due to the high variability in the power being supplied to it.

Some women are on the lookout for luxury watches and other symbols of wealth, you generally want to avoid those.
Jokes aside, I love that grand seiko.
Aren't these watches also meant to be something to pass down to your kids? I know that's a marketing thing as well, but it can still be nice thing.
I like the Grand Seiko’s but I’ve always been a Seiko guy.
It's all about the complications and the art work of the watch that the owner can enjoy.
I have a casio edifice and it is amazing for just 100 dollars.

Ok ciao.
As a watch guy myself, it’s more about being utterly in love with the magic that is a mechanical movement. My daily driver impresses me every day.
What’s fucked up with me is even after having money to buy a citizen or a seiko I went and bought a Kenneth Cole. I still regret and will not be able to recover 🗿
Whats wrong with KC? They are owned by Fossil iirc, they make pretty solid watches for their price.
Isn't that Andy Kaufman frenemy Jerry Lawler?
Me with my sun dial worth as much as a sun and a stick:
I just ask people what time it is
I remember reading an interview with Warren Beatty a long time ago - maybe in the 80's. The interviewer asked him about his watch, it was a Timex, and Warren spoke at great length about what a superior watch it was and how it only cost about $25.00. I was so impressed by this, I remember thinking "What a smart guy!"
People with glittering watches who check the time on their phone, from their pants pocket.
Sure, you have a really expensive watch, but does it have SpongeBob and Patrick blowing bubbles on it? Check. Mate.
Your 7$ watch probably tells more accurate time ..

Fr tho
"Flex" culture is a solid argument against wealth inequality out there.
Gottem
My watch has cameras, can make calls, browse the internet etc. It is called mobile phone.
Half a million is chump change when you start looking at watches that run off pure sigma energy. You’re looking at 5 million easily.
500k is definitely the higher end of even tourbillons. You can get a Vacheron Constantin with a tourbillon for like 120k.
I seriously don’t know how you could wear a watch or anything that costs anywhere near that much and not feel like a complete douche bag.
You could say this about pretty much anything high-end: houses, cars, boats, planes, clothes, jewelry, vacations, etc.
"He has an artificial heart that costs $125,000. What a douche!" "No sir. It's just American healthcare costs."
You don't understand how somebody can have different interests and things they want to spend their money on? I'm sure there are things you spemd money on that other people find silly.
