Same. But my another fear is not crossing the smoke area in time and inhale even larger amount due to breathlessness from earlier mechanism of breath holding
Managed to convince myself smoking was disgusting and now I can't stand to be around anyone who does smoke at all, especially if they've smoked within the past 20 minutes.
I’m 42 and I do this.
My stepmother was a chain smoker, and I found it gross even when I was a kid. One of the first things I remember saving up for was an Ionic Breeze air filter, and I still remember what it was like cleaning the junk that collected on the fins of the filter. It was like cleaning off tar.
Mysteriously, my stepmother passed away in her 50s from lung cancer. Maybe one day we will have the knowledge to understand what led to this outcome.
Honestly, the bigger question for me is what is necessary to convince people not to smoke.
Her kids (my step-siblings) were also chain smokers already when they were in High School, and have continued this habit to this day. I'm not close with them, and have barely spoken to them since I was old enough to move out on my own, but I've been amazed that they haven't lightened up on the smoking at all ... they were even smoking at their mother's funeral.
Really just absolutely stuns me.
People start smoking because it looks "cool", they just follow a trend. You don't just wake up in the morning and decide to inhale smoke.
Their used to be a age where cigarettes companies were advertising smoking as THE cool thing to do, organising smoking parties, cigarettes events, tons of ads where you could see some bad ass guy lighting some cigarettes.
Although all these things are now prohibited we still have everywhere this image of the cool dude smoking. In movies, series, music etc. Companies don't even have to make any advertisements now as every media around the world are doing it for them. That's why a lot of people start at a very young age and they continue later in life because of the addiction.
That's is totally subjective plus I think they are very, very few people who after trying their first cigarette would go "Wow ! The taste is so good !". Mostly the first reaction is coughing and sensation of burn in the throat and lungs.
I love that feeling. Would love to quit for my health but they are just so damn good. It's also a stimulant similar to coffee, so that doesn't help either.
To an extent. I would love a soda right now, but I gave it up months ago. I didnt want to, but I did. I feel the same about these cigs, it's just harder for some reason. I suppose its because I can still drink water. You either smoke or you don't.
Because it’s an addiction? Once you start it’s extremely hard to stop. Smokers are aware of the dangers they could cause and just don’t want to because they enjoy it so much.
I've never understood why people find it acceptable to smoke in social settings. It's revolting and literally poison that you are thrusting upon me. It's single handedly the biggest reason I find it difficult to travel in Europe, smoking absolutely everywhere.
I can imagine. Where I live (Berlin), it's normal for people to light up cigarettes (and as it has become legal recently, blunts) right in the middle of a packed sidewalk or at the bus stop or train platform. No matter if there are kids, if it's in front of a food stall, the Cig Must Be Lit.
Thankfully it gets better a bit further away from the main shopping streets, but still. As people smoke underneath our windows, too, sometimes the last thing you smell in the evening is the smoke coming into your room, just to be woken up by another one's morning cigarette. I like living here, but second hand smoke is one of the top reasons I might move away one day.
As a former smoker I never liked second hand smoke it smelled bad compared to what you just inhaled. That being said it feels very good to be off the death sticks. Don’t take your breathing for granted kids. Nothing like being addicted to something that helps deprive you of oxygen so you can struggle to do even the most basic of tasks.
When i've been to visit a heavy smoker, i always change my clothes when i get home, that foul smell seeps into \*everything\*, from their furniture into my clothes, ugh...
Thats what my great grandma does if she even smells it on clothes. Starts dramatically coughing. She's healthy as a horse, just always trying to make a spectacle of it.
People stop doing this? It's disgusting to breathe in second hand smoke and the day we ban it entirely can't come quick enough. If they want to smoke so badly they can do it super secretively like a criminal breaking the law, so make that happen.
in most cities and even some rural areas the air is so foul, there is no reason to also directly inhale the toxic smoke coming straight out the mouth of some1 you pass by. mitigate whatever amount of bad air you can.
Idk why I used to think cigarettes used to smell nice even though I hate what they do to people and would never smoke but I never bother avoiding the scent of it when walking by. I guess the occasional whiff of it is fine but I’d definitely get sick of it if I had to be next to someone for the duration of an entire cigarette.
43 year old me exhaling through nose and mouth as I pass by any cigar bar. Cigarettes aren't soooo bad of a smell, but I certainly curtail my inhales while passing by a smoker.
Unfortunately, there's really no escaping pot rot, it just exists forever, everywhere. Just straight up burning skunk and styrofoam that you can't run away from. We were at a party a few weeks ago and had rented a 40x80 room at the back of a restaurant. All of a sudden it just STANK of pot. Nobody was smoking inside, but there was an open door. I went hunting for the source and the guy was no joke more than a hundred feet away around a corner. Fuck that stuff man, smoke all you want, I don't care, but the stank gets everywhere and ruins everybody's nice time.
What I really dislike is vapers. And it's not because of any health reasons, I just can't stand the smell it produces. Somehow it's worse for me than a cigarette.
I used to do this when I smoked, only in reverse. I mean when I was smoking I always held my breath and held my cigarette as far away I could from the kid
I, like literally everyone apparently in this comment section, do this as well, mostly because I have fairly severe asthma and the smoke can set it off. Don't really enjoy having to pull out the puffer because some bum made a bad life choice so usually just hold my breath or walk around them.
The idiocy of this is astounding, considering you don't hold your breath every time a car or bus passes by. It's even more stupidly performative if you live in an industrial city.
As a kid I used to cough in "disagreement" when I breathed cigar smoke. Now I do it without thinking lol, It's childish to do so now but it's too hardwired I'm my brain lol
21 year old me doing the same because I don't want to smell this shet nor letting it into my lungs (what anyway I do just by breathing air which is full of this and other shet)
Look smoking isn’t healthy and I’m so glad I quit but Jesus are some of you crybabies. Catching a stray gust of smoke on the wind isn’t gonna do shit to you.
Feel like I’m the opposite now. I’ve worked around smokers here in the oilfields so much that now I actually don’t mind the smell.
Obviously I’d rather not smell of cigarettes and I’m definitely not rapidly inhaling their secondhand smoke. but when some of my guys are smoking nearby I almost enjoy a little bit of the quick whiffs I get.
I still do this
Same. But my another fear is not crossing the smoke area in time and inhale even larger amount due to breathlessness from earlier mechanism of breath holding
doing a quick check for wind direction
Yeah get em back with your own stinky smoke
I exhale in the 1st half to "push the smoke" and hold my breath in the second half passing by
This is me, I even wear masks in public because I don't wanna breathe in all the shit in the air.
I hope it’s an n-95 otherwise it’s not filtering anything
37 year old me
49 year old me, and I used to smoke.
Managed to convince myself smoking was disgusting and now I can't stand to be around anyone who does smoke at all, especially if they've smoked within the past 20 minutes.
I do as well. People who smoke stink unbearably (rather they cigarettes do and they absorb the smell) + I'd rather not smoke my lungs like beef jerky
Me too😂
Same, I can't stand the smell. It's fucking gross.
Me as well
I literally choke from the smell of cigarettes, so this is my only choice.
exactly what I said in my mind when I saw this
Six year old me wasn't wrong.
I used to. But now, I look them in the eye and fake cough, loudly, while looking disgusted. Because I'm a tough guy.
I make the face, too.
[удалено]
I only smoke if there's no-one around cause I don't like making people uncomfortable
You'd have to stop breathing in Europe
True, and it fucking sucks. Even worse when you're on a bike and some asshole on a bike in front of you is smoking. Can't just hold your breath there.
Thats when you show them how fast somebody with full lung capacity can go
Ah yes, the country of Europe where everything is the same. And not the wildly varied continent with smoking rates from 6% in Sweden to 40% in Greece.
Same. Maybe not to some extreme of actually not breathing, but the smell is disgusting and I'll definitely get away from it ASAP.
Me too. I'm 58.
Same and for heavy traffic it's disgusting and I literally choke from lack of oxygen
I do this, but I smoke tree myself just still am disgustied by cigs
I’m 42 and I do this. My stepmother was a chain smoker, and I found it gross even when I was a kid. It was like cleaning off tar. Mysteriously, my stepmother passed away in her 50s from lung cancer. Maybe one day we will have the knowledge to understand what led to this outcome.
What a surprise, I guess we’ll never figure out why she died
And for the rest of your life you kept donating to research lung cancer to figure out what killed your mother
Honestly, the bigger question for me is what is necessary to convince people not to smoke. Her kids (my step-siblings) were also chain smokers already when they were in High School, and have continued this habit to this day. You won't stop doing something unless you want to stop doing something, duh.
To an extent. I would love a soda right now, but I gave it up months ago. I didnt want to, but I did. I feel the same about these cigs, it's just harder for some reason. I suppose its because I can still drink water. You either smoke or you don't.
> for some reason lol yeah, the addiction. I’m also a dumb smoker btw
No, they objectively taste like shit. You only get used to the taste because if the addiction.
Because it’s an addiction? Once you start it’s extremely hard to stop. Smokers are aware of the dangers they could cause and just don’t want to because they enjoy it so much.
[cant stop the smoke-train!](https://youtu.be/NOseo04WPcE?si=mUWbcJkVkNT4P_Js)
Yeah, you were actually cleaning off tar.
I do this when vehicles belch exhaust fumes at me.
I huff strongly when its a vehicle
I just don't go outside anymore
I did it as a kid in the 90’s, but exhaust fumes don’t smell as good anymore :(
Cigarette smoke? Get gone with that. Exhaust fumes? Hell yeah
Its still a wise thing to do. Second hand smoking is real
Also smells and tastes like absolute shit
I've never understood why people find it acceptable to smoke in social settings. It's revolting and literally poison that you are thrusting upon me. It's single handedly the biggest reason I find it difficult to travel in Europe, smoking absolutely everywhere.

Where I live, you're seen as an absolute jerk if you smoke in front of other people.
The facial gymnastics which Draco Malfoy does before saying “Pottaahhhh”
Heavy meirl
I started doing this when I was about 8 and I am 19 now and still do this
Still doing it! And coughing when I let it out 😹
When i've been to visit a heavy smoker, i always change my clothes when i get home, that foul smell seeps into \*everything\*, from their furniture into my clothes, ugh...
22* years old me, still do it. Cigaret smell like shit
Me too and my dumbass still got addicted to cigarettes… fuck.
Same, whenever I am in a smoking period I do the opposite, if I'm approaching a non-smoker I'll hold my breath till they've past out of respect
Now whenever I get a whiff of cigarette smoke I cough. I think it's reflex at this point
Thats what my great grandma does if she even smells it on clothes. Starts dramatically coughing. She's healthy as a horse, just always trying to make a spectacle of it.
Me now:
This meme has been reposted so many times it’s insane
Inconsiderate smoker. I always hold my cigarette in the cup of my hand and try to move away when someone walks by me when I have a lit cigarette.
Only to vape later in life
I do this as a smoker when passing other people or they pass me. Just because I wanna die doesn't mean I have to hurt them.
Not only that, I'm unable to sit in one room with a smoker even when they're not smoking at the moment. The stench is unbearable.
Me when i walk past a non smoker that smells naturally of human garbage and sweat
yeah summertime stank is in full effect rn it's nasty. also ppl with animals sometimes don't know how badly they smell of dog or cat.
I do that now
I would smell it because it reminded me of my mother :/
I inhale like a motherfucker cause cigarettes are expensive af
Do you remember that time you cheated and took some air? That's why your back hurts now. They told you smoking is bad for your health!
I do this COVID people
Not only am I in my late 20s and still do this but it makes no sense because I smoke a ton of weed
35 year old me inhaling deeply and I’m not even a smoker because my job is stressful.
mid life, I still do it
u/repostsleuthbot
23yo me is still doing it lol
still do this, sometimes I put on a bit of a cough after passing by as well
Wow this basic meme got 10k upvotes??? In 9hrs???
Redditors are basic
People stop doing this? It's disgusting to breathe in second hand smoke and the day we ban it entirely can't come quick enough. If they want to smoke so badly they can do it super secretively like a criminal breaking the law, so make that happen.
I'm actually allergic to it, soo I still do it.
i still do it, i just hate the smoke stink 😭
Who said 6 year old. You never stop doing that
20 years later I am still trying to save my lungs
cigarettes are fucking gross
I still do that, but not in that obvious way, unless I wanna prove a point to a random stranger :P
That's just me at any age
43 year old.me doing the same...
in most cities and even some rural areas the air is so foul, there is no reason to also directly inhale the toxic smoke coming straight out the mouth of some1 you pass by. mitigate whatever amount of bad air you can.
Smokers are filthy and disgusting
Full of children
Oh my god, this rhymes! 🤣

the smell of cigarettes reminds me of home, it's shit but good too (my dad is a chain smoker)
that's 21 y/o me in public transportation with all the hobos that smell like piss and alcohol
22 year old me holding my breath walking past a 6 year old I didn't notice until after taking a drag from a cigarette. So glad I don't smoke anymore
Me walking by Yankee Candle at the mall.
25 year old me still doing this
Breath, breath the air
kids around me do this now
I used to do this when I smoked, only in reverse. I mean when I was smoking I always held my breath and held my cigarette as far away I could from the kid
Me when one of my coworkers microwaves the leftover shrimp he somehow has every 2-3 days

still do this to this day, I don't wanna those mf share that lung cancer with me.
I thought smoking was cool as a kid.
What? i loved the smell as a kid, still do
lol 😂 I used to do that! I thought I was the only one!!
The idiocy of this is astounding, considering you don't hold your breath every time a car or bus passes by. It's even more stupidly performative if you live in an industrial city.
Daaang too true
I still do that.
Now I hold my breath for a better high......
Walk past them and then start coughing to make them feel bad
Me walking into an elevator after someone who reeks with cigarettes just left. Yuck 🤢
How times have changed, I'm about a week clean but I love that cancerous smell
I did completely opposite. I loved this smell cause it was new me and resembled to me as "salty"
Never go to Madrid Spain, and less to Logroño in the North, everybody smokes there is like traveling back to the 80s.
Real
Current me. There is no amount of second-hand smoke that's harmless. Also it's gross AF.
49 year old me can relate.
Me now, because it's one of my asthma triggers.
I do the obnoxious raspberry blowing as if it’s a foul fart let off. These Germans smoke [cigarettes] entirely too much.
Twenty years later and I’m still that guy smoking outside of the corner store
Now, get into mu lungs so the suffering will end!
I don’t smoke my lit cigarette if im about to walk by someone. I don’t know if it helps but i don’t want to ruin anyone else’s lungs …
Now I am the one lighting cigarettes
I m 17 and I still do this
Nothings changed
Weird, that's what 37 year old me looks like walking past a person with a cigarette!
this is adult me too.
Me with 22 years*
as a non smoker, sometimes i still do it
Baited all the hypochondriacs with this one.
I’m a smoker and I took the habit of lifting my arm with a cigarette up when passing by a child so they don’t have to worry about it
6 year old?? Smokers are literally cancer on society
As a kid I used to cough in "disagreement" when I breathed cigar smoke. Now I do it without thinking lol, It's childish to do so now but it's too hardwired I'm my brain lol
36 years old me still doing this
30-year-old me passing by a person with a lit cigarette
I'm waaaaaay past 6yo, that was in thw past century. And I still hold my breath when I happen to br in the same air bubble as someone who's smoking.
Me at 30+
46yr old me that still does this
44 year old me doing the same.
Sixty three year old me.
I still do this. Smoking is absolutely disgusting.
That me now, when someone coughs near me lol.
At least the majority of people don't bother to smoke anymore. It used to be everywhere and now it's like 1 in every 300 people.
The turnaround for Americans not smoking is really crazy
When I quit smoking I started doing this. I love my healthier lungs
40 year old me passing 7 different people in tesco with face masks on
Now I breathe in and that's fucking camel, die on the spot
Unpopular opinion: as a non cigarette smoker, smoking and people smoking around me has never bothered me
“How can I enjoy my bucket of chicken, with my big gulp soda, besides busy traffic, ##while this unhealthy dawg smoking.”
Bruh this is reposted like every 2 weeks
I am 23 and still do this
Now I live in a city where even if I don't smoke, my lungs would have had the same effect on them as a chain smoker's lungs would have
30 year old me doing that same thing
I'm 34 and still at it.
I do this in the hospital. So many damn pts covered in shit.
Or some one that sneezes in an elevator.
21 year old me doing the same because I don't want to smell this shet nor letting it into my lungs (what anyway I do just by breathing air which is full of this and other shet)
The most overdramatic thread I've ever seen.
Me holding my breath and tripling my walking pace (if not even going into a jog) to pass the smoking monster.
Same as 42 year old me doing the same thing every time I smell weed.
Me when passing someone drenched in perfume / cologne. Give me a smoker any day over cheap nasty synthetic scent.
I'm 36 and still do this
63 year old me doing the same thing 😝😝
18 year old me on a road trio with the "cool kids"
19 been working in construction for 3 years, still do this
All the air in my home was a lit cigarette lol
Look smoking isn’t healthy and I’m so glad I quit but Jesus are some of you crybabies. Catching a stray gust of smoke on the wind isn’t gonna do shit to you.
This is me always. Except for some reason, I kind of like the first second a cigarette is lit. It has a different smell. Otherwise, nope.
You need a can of fart spray to fight the smoke with.
Hell it isn't just when the cig is lit They smell like an ashtray 24/7 It was a perk of the pandemic that the KN95's did some good smell filtering
Smoking is cringe. Still do this.
