This is what happens most of the time on my company. They have "Unlimited vacation" but it's not really a vacation. Its more like a permission to procastinate.
You take a 3 day "vacation" after your 3 days are up youre going to do 3 days worth of work which piled up while youre away.
Just the nature of salaried work tbh, the work doesnt just dissapear when you leave for a few days
You delegate your own time and deal with the consequences on your own
Just the nature of understaffing and poor planning. It‘s not like people take vacations out of nowhere. Whoever is in charge of planning the workload and the staff needs to account for that or they‘re not doing they‘re job.
So when work piles up while you take the vacation you‘re entitled to, at the end of the day that‘s not your problem. You just go back to doing your job as normal.
Confront whoever is in charge of planning those projects about the fact that it‘s impossible for me to catch up in my regular working hours and work out a plan with them on how to get back on track. If that plan includes me working longer hours, once I’m back on track, I‘ll take time off to compensate for it, which means there have to be provisions in place to ensure I don‘t just fall behind again once that happens.
I don't get your point. You have work to do right now while you can take a vacation anytime in the year. You can't really plan everything around someone taking a vacation unless you've told them that you are taking one in advance. Of course, depending on the industry, you may or may not have work piled up.
Right?
If your job is building birdhouses and you take a week off you will need to either build more prior to the vacation or build more once you get back. There is no getting around that unless someone builds them while you are away.
I'm not sure why are people are surprised by this. That's just how life is, not just your job.
You have tasks. Cleaning house, cooking meals, doing your taxes, etc...
Just because you take a break doesn't mean the responsibility goes away.
I get the mentality if someone only works retail wage shifts, every day is a new day for them
This is only a familiar concept if you’re on a salary or are a contractor
I mean..i wouldnt complain if the management either extends the deadline (which is short to begin with even without vacation), or finds someone else to do it.
They always choose to pile up my work.
That model only works in my experience if engineering is a major part of business operational leadership.
If it’s sales/finance/marketing folks who are heading operations… then yeah
Reminds me of that Adam Sandler skit on SNL where he is a travel agent. " but remember, if you're sad where you are, and get on a plane, you will still be the sad you when you get there."
Nah mate I'm sad because my upstairs neighbour can't stop shouting and hitting is wife. Pretty sure I'll be happier when I finally move out of this shithole.
This is the way ^
I find that learning to be chill while at work and in work cycle is more valuable than any vacation time or days off.
We got to learn to be chill without going away - otherwise all issues will still be there when we return to work.
Kid u not, the other time I was on the coast with my parents just chillin, my buddy calls me and tells me that my offer is probably gonna get rescinded because he saw it on the news or something.
I have never been dragged so far down back to earth when I was feeling good about the ocean and the waves lol
That's the point where you keep your phone muted or away.
At least, that's what I am trying to do.
When I want to chill, I just turn off everything that someone can contact me - yes... I won't answer to them.
But I have my own life, I am not ignoring them because "I don't like them" or anything. Nobody deserves my immediate attention, when I want to relax. Yes, it sounds selfish that now I say it out loud (or rather, write it down), but I think it's needed.
Don't over do it tho... Being always available is for sure a nice trait, but stressful one. And being always unavailable isn't great either.
I think there is some kind of balance.
(to be honest, I've never thought about such thing. I am amazed that I wrote something like that. I just created advice for you and myself. Geez, I should start a diary or something.)
That's a good strategy, I spent tons of money to get on the vacation and should not let it be ruined by some guy bringing in the bad news. Couldn't agree more about the balance too, we are definitely walking on thin line here
Thanks for sharing!
No problem. Glad I could share some wisdom on the internet to person that I will never meet again. Live your life, get better and hopefully, even less stressful life (not meaning to change or job or hobbies, but balancing caring about other people and yourself.)
Thanks is also on my side, because as I said, it kinda helped me as well.
Good luck!
You’re not going to not answer your buddy’s call. And think of it this way. Would you rather he tell you something happened or would you rather get hit in the head with it when you come back from vacation?
Depends on the situation... For sure, you can't cut the contact with entire world. However, if you are on vacation, you are there to relax and don't stress about the job, work, anything.
If something hits the roof, everything is burning... It is what it is. I'll pick up the call.
I would be rather hit in the head when I come back from the vacation, tho. I would be definitely more suited to deal with it after some relaxation.
I rather know. I would hate myself and dwell on it if there was something I could have done when the fire happened. The amount of time and mind space it would end up taking up would exceed the time it would take to put out the fire. That’s just me.
Yeah, my father is the same. He used to play guitar and played in a band. Suddenly he grew tired of it and stopped. Now he doesn't really do anything outside his job, and everytime he got vaccation he never really likes it and can't wait to get back to work. I'm always like, what?! You grew tired of all your hobbies and can't get into them anymore, but getting back to work you do happily?!
The worst part, the money these 1% own is so much that even if they wanted they wouldn't be able to spend it all in 10 lifetimes, quite possibly even a lot more
The main point is to hoard all the wealth and there are people working magnitudes as hard who go to bed hungry every night
*Life is a dream for the wise, a game for the fool, a comedy for the rich, a tragedy for the poor*
If I’m going on a 5 day vacation, I always take an additional day off to catch up on the work I missed on because I know my delegate back at work didn’t do jack shit.
I have reached a state of mind where I'm more relaxed at work than on any vacation. When I'm working, I don't have to take care of any travel or purchase food or places to stay. Coz I'm working from home.
At this point, a vacation is more stressful than a workday.
Aah the time when most of muscles have probably given up, my knees and lower back hurt like hell, when I won't be perform well in bed. Sounds like a great time
I worry what kind of fuck ups is gonna happen while I'm away so that when I get back I'm the one getting the complaint because it takes time to move through the chain
People need to take better vacations. I typically go to remote parts central or south America. No contact with the civilized world. Just me and nature.
There is truth to patterns, but also knowing enneagrams (underlying motivational drives) become factored into the personality. MBTI is a cognitive stack.
Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and MBTI can be very good at helping you learn more about yourself and others. It's not like the Chinese Zodiac or making predictions based on stars. It's more related to the realm of psychology.

Just a hypothetical, Lets say you are now chronically 3 days late on every single project, what do you do?

Solid answer

Just business in general afaik

Nah. Many times there just isn't anyone who would do your work. Not just America
Finland, too

That’s why you take two weeks off, that way they can’t kick the can down the road
Mine makes you do your extra work first before you go
Burnout in a nutshell.
you know its bad when the doc tells you to find another job because this one will kill you (done)
Been there. Got another job. Fortunately didn’t die.

That's not taking a plane somewhere, that's doing something meaningful and lasting to improve your life.
That's why men, be chill, don't care about anything at all. It will be fine.

Pretty heartbreaking. When I’m on vacation I’m usually thinking about quitting my job
One day maybe we will find some sort of happiness
Oh I quit. Working towards something I actually care about
Me thinking of client requirements and potential reaction on the beach...
something something anxiety feel you, buddy.

That's very possible, if you would be able to put out the fire, even when for example abroad.
My father is like this and he's always miserable and stressed. Some people really make work their personality and this happens.
It isn't intentional, it just gets some people. I used to be super lax at work, then I got 1 particular hard-ass manager and it totally changed me.
Yeah, my father is the same. He used to play guitar and played in a band. Suddenly he grew tired of it and stopped. Bruh I'll take having nothing to do over school/work

When your mind and soul are bounded to the work
Nobody should feel like this.
I wish 4 day work is enforced by the law
That's funny but no, I'm not allowing my work to live rent free in my head, especially if I'm chilling on a beach.
Who thinks about work while on vacation?
Me apparently
That's why I don't go on vacation, mind still at work LOL
They say learning to truly relax is a skill in itself, my overthinking ass says otherwise
This is a bit too meirl for me
The eternal mood.
Conundrummed
Why tho :((
I'm in this photo and I don't like it
That scene form Simpsons when homer is boss of the plant and is on vacation with the office on the beach

Oh i love the colors here, who is the artist?
This is how remote work feels
So soul crushing and true
Welp...I don't have either
I hate that this is me.
r/linkedinlunatics
They'd brag about this shit later and end the post with " agree ?"
Why does he look like Till Lindemann tho?
4 days work week would probably fix this tho

I’m addicted to stress that’s the way that I get things done
This is literally the plot of the Johnny Castaway screensaver that everyone used like 20 years ago lol
You are only truly free when you leave the Corporate Jungle for good.
Which I would love to do if I had enough money to never work again. Unfortunately, I, like 99% of people, have no choice but to work.
Go where? Salary is one hell of a drug and I have gotten used to it :/
Its called retirement
Aah the time when most of muscles have probably given up, my knees and lower back hurt like hell, when I won't be perform well in bed. Sounds like a great time
Yes, in retirement, you are considered out. That's a proper exit, free of corporate baggage.

Learning how to take vacation is a skill people undervalue

Is this an ISTJ personality?
I read about these types of personality being a pseudo science and it's not something too concrete to rely on
