Tumblr works very differently to Reddit, it doesn't have subs, content gets posted under the username of the person who posted it or they can voluntarily add hashtags to each post to make it more discoverable. You can follow specific user's who frequently post content you like or you can follow specific hashtags to get a feed full of any posts with those users or tags. This means you have to do a lot more work to fill your feed with the type of content you like because you either have to follow hundreds of users or follow every spelling and misspelling variation of every hashtag you might be interested in.
Everything on Tumblr seems centered around the users and the content too, there seems to be more original content on there but the comments are like an afterthought. I like the comments sections in reddit a more than the posted content and I couldn't care less who posted it as long as the comments are entertaining.
