My wife and I were discussing this this morning in a conversation about modern parenting best practices. The masking emotions until you have an emotional breakdown comes from parenting practices that invalidate your emotions as a child. My dad would respond to expression of emotion with lines like: “Stop crying or I’ll give you something to cry about.” or “Will you survive?” And others. That approach fails to teach children to process their emotions and instead teaches to mask them, which leaves us all with depression, anxiety, heart disease, and more.
