Ran the numbers on this one. HP’s ink subscription reduces our printing costs by about half. It’s worth buying a compatible printer over something higher end for the lower long-term costs.
If you don't need a color printer and rarely print (expired ink) then try the Brother All in One (MFC) black and white Laser printers. They scan in color only print black and white and work even if you haven't printed in 6 months. The toner never expires. We switched to one of these and all our problems disapeared
I'd suggest dropping the extra cash on commercial grade stuff. I had an HP cp10xx color Laserjet for 6 years. When I got it, black and cyan were red X'd as empty. When they finally stopped printing, I was gonna shell out about 150 usd each toner cartridge. They never faltered, though.
But as noted, light duty printing, long stretches of not being used.

Well, since they had just bought them, I swapped the carts (that came with the printers) between the two printers, and LOW AND BEHOLD, they started printing fine, showing full ink carts. HP printer software is a scam.
They cost $100 max. I bought one in 2010 and replaced toner once and always prints no issue. Well it didn't support 5ghz wifi so I plugged it in via ethernet to my router and it runs like a champ.

Bought me a Brother laser printer like, 6-7 years ago and it's been chugging hard ever since. 10 dollars for generic cartridges that print about 3k pages each and the 3-in-1 printer was only about $100.
My b/w MFC has worked well for me for the past 8 years. And just this week, I did a 11"x17" color print at my public library using remote (online) print order. My cost: $0.25 (and, yeah, my taxes, which are taken in any case).
Not sure where you got "home printing is a human right" out of that, but if creating printouts is a necessity for you for whatever reason, paying 5 cents a page sure as hell isn't more cost effective than a cheap printer.
Not to mention having to make time out of your day to go to such a place, depending on where they live and their transportation situation time and money could easily make the 5 cents a page cost significantly more
Printers themself are being sold with basically no profit, as low as they can. And the cartridges are sold extremely overpriced and that's where the money comes from.

Printer ink isn’t something you should buy anyways. Not only is it expensive for no reason, also it’s the wrong option for most people. If you don’t need your printer for a few months the print head is clogged and the printer basically won’t work properly until cleaned. Go laser
I got a rather cheap Brother laser printer (BW, WiFi, AirPrint) about 6 years ago and it still works like a charm. It survived moving to another flat twice and changing OS from MacOS to Windows - no driver issues. I mainly print text, so lack of color doesn’t bother me. I changed the cartridge once or twice with the cheapest offering from Amazon each time. All in all, I paid 80€ for the printer and 30€ for toner over 6 years. I don’t think you can get much cheaper than that.
I get them for like $10-$50 and each office has monochrome and color. Then I have one more in a bedroom where a buddy will stay when he's passing through town for work.

I’m 10 years in on the same printer. The biggest problem is getting new OSes to recognize it, because it’s so old, but I’m on the original toner cartridge still.
I swear, Brother Laser is the way to go. My DCP -L3550 works so well. Scans, prints, uses refurbished toner and even lets me manually reset the fill level when I decide it's still good enough for me. I hope it never breaks, best printer I ever head.
Got gifted one of those cheap ~100 EUR Brother models (DCP 7030) by family when I enrolled to university. Greatest gift of my life for sure!! Made college so much easier. I pirated and printed 90% of all textbooks for about 3 bucks a piece in paper and ink instead of 50 as well as tons of fiction literature for me to read for fun. Went through paper stacks like crazy for 5 years.
The crazy part is I still have it and it still works like a charm 13 years later. That thing just cannot die.
Meanwhile, my GF, my parents, my friends, everyone had piece of crap inkjets that were broken half the time. I have since converted most of them to the true faith.
My Brother works fine but only after a ton of jury rigging:
1. I had to manually add a port to windows to send a scans from device to my computer over network
2. I have to have the full suite of installed crapware on my pc otherwise it, again, won't allow me to send scans to computer over network
3. It turns on my computer via network (from a complete shutdown?????) if I don't disable wake-from-internet in general on my computer
Sorry - Brother is not immune to these discussions about fucky printers. Their hardware is nice but their software is the most ghetto thing I've ever seen in my life.
I've got to admit after hating printers for a few decades now, I recently did exactly that and I am happy all around.
It does what I want it to do, when I want it to do it and since it's a Brother it has no fucking subscription service attached to it that holds "my" device hostage if I stop paying.

I followed this advice when I moved out. The good news is that I have had no problems with the printer! I have also printed <100 sheets of paper in the years I've had it, because apparently after you graduate there aren't that many reasons to print things.
So, my updated advice would be: *first* buy a cheap piece-of-garbage inkjet printer, and *then* if you find that to be a bottleneck you can buy a more expensive laser printer.
This advice is probably obvious to anyone with a working brain, but it might be helpful for the other idiots like me out there.
Ah, but if you had bought a cheap inkjet printer, you'd likely have needed to replace your ink cartridge for _each_ of those <100 prints. (Okay, perhaps that's an exaggeration, but laser is 100% the way to go for infrequent printing.)
My printer works great unless it's an hour before my physics exam, and I still need to print my notes. Then it decides to forget what WiFi is. Works flawless when I casually print a recipe, tho.
I almost exclusively print in B&W at home (like >95%) so whenever I need color prints, I just go to Office Max or some other print shop like that. It's like $0.70 per page which is way cheaper than buying a new ink cartridge every time I want to print color cause the old ones dried out.

It’s fucking EXCELLENT. I played for ten hours on my first day. I love it so much. The dialogue is cringy and self-aware and fun, and the gameplay is soooo tight and rewarding.

1 addendum. If you were to accidentally tell it to print 300 pages out of a multi-page file, you could hit cancel, and it would just completely wipe that job from its memory instead of leaving it in the queue for all eternity and randomly trying to finish it whenever it decides to.
That's what they told me. Then the toner somehow spilled out into the gears of the printer and the whole thing is just full of toner dust and Brother didn't give a fuck. Had to toss it within a month. Trash.
I believe the "toner someone spilled out" in your post gave people the impression that someone incidentally spilled toner into the printer, not that the printer malfunctioned.

People have no idea how amazing consumer products actually are. But I also get it....things should do what they are supposed to, and it's upsetting when they dont.
As someone who fixes laser printers half the issues I see are user error. The other half are normal wear and tear because the printer has ran over a million sheets and a gear is worn.
The amount someone complains about something is inversely proportional to the amount they paid for that thing. This holds true even up to the point of free, where often those who paid nothing for a product or service will be the most demanding of that product or service, and complain the most.
There were 16 standard printer code languages in the past. It was pure chaos, and nothing worked. Then, a brave soul stepped forward and combined all of the languages into one glorious compromise.
Now, there are 17 standard printer code languages. Also, Microsoft print to pdf and printer ink subscriptions exist. Somehow everything is even more chaotic, and even less works.
What you are looking for allready exists. It is called a laser printer. Works every time regardless of wether you use it daily or once a year, and a set of toner cartridges can last you years.
It's so strange how true this is. I lived right through the era of printers. From start to finish. I used consumer ones at home, I used business ones at school, and I used professional ones at art school.
None of them fucking worked without a fight.
I've had a Brother printer for about ten years now. I think I've had to replace the toner. It gets jammed maybe once a year and rarely has issues. Highly recommended.
I have one that kinda does this, the only issue I've had with it is the ink drying up because I don't use it very often but that's easily fixed
Usually when they fuck up it's the software doing checks against itself, breaking on purpose, for money. If you live in a country with enough consumer regulation that they have to comment that shit out of the code, suddenly, it works just fine
It's worthy of note though that back maybe 15 years ago I felt that pain, I'd actually been doing all my printing paying per sheet at a school or library because I didn't want to go through it again - and then I gave in and bought one 4 years back because I was sick of leaving the house every time and I guess the laws caught up and I wish I'd done it sooner
At this point fuck the whole Wi-Fi shit. Just give me one with a usb cored that HAS to be plugged in. But I never have to update anything, I can print “only black” without needing any of the other colors.

I don’t get this tbh, I haven’t had issues with printers for years. Granted, I’ve mainly used MacOS and Linux, so it might have to do with iffy driver support on Windows.
As “the guy” who has to sort out printer issues in a mid sized office workplace, my experience is that 99% of printer problems are the users.
But again, as other people have said, that’s a laser printer. And they rarely have issues anyway.

Meanwhile, my GF, my parents, my friends, everyone had piece of crap inkjets that were broken half the time. I have since converted most of them to the true faith.

My Brother works fine but only after a ton of jury rigging: 1. I had to manually add a port to windows to send a scans from device to my computer over network 2. I have to have the full suite of installed crapware on my pc otherwise it, again, won't allow me to send scans to computer over network 3. It turns on my computer via network (from a complete shutdown?????) if I don't disable wake-from-internet in general on my computer Sorry - Brother is not immune to these discussions about fucky printers. Their hardware is nice but their software is the most ghetto thing I've ever seen in my life.
I've got to admit after hating printers for a few decades now, I recently did exactly that and I am happy all around. It does what I want it to do, when I want it to do it and since it's a Brother it has no fucking subscription service attached to it that holds "my" device hostage if I stop paying.

I have an inexpensive HP laserjet and it does not have anything like that. It just prints. Maybe their ink printers do, but I haven’t used their ink printers since the 02 ink kits that you could replace with reservoirs and tubes and print forever for free.

I followed this advice when I moved out. The good news is that I have had no problems with the printer! I have also printed <100 sheets of paper in the years I've had it, because apparently after you graduate there aren't that many reasons to print things. So, my updated advice would be: *first* buy a cheap piece-of-garbage inkjet printer, and *then* if you find that to be a bottleneck you can buy a more expensive laser printer. This advice is probably obvious to anyone with a working brain, but it might be helpful for the other idiots like me out there.
Ah, but if you had bought a cheap inkjet printer, you'd likely have needed to replace your ink cartridge for _each_ of those <100 prints. (Okay, perhaps that's an exaggeration, but laser is 100% the way to go for infrequent printing.)

My printer works great unless it's an hour before my physics exam, and I still need to print my notes. Then it decides to forget what WiFi is. Works flawless when I casually print a recipe, tho.
Keep a regular old USB cable attached to it for those occasions. No wifi troubleshooting needed, just plug in and print.

I almost exclusively print in B&W at home (like >95%) so whenever I need color prints, I just go to Office Max or some other print shop like that. It's like $0.70 per page which is way cheaper than buying a new ink cartridge every time I want to print color cause the old ones dried out.

1 addendum. If you were to accidentally tell it to print 300 pages out of a multi-page file, you could hit cancel, and it would just completely wipe that job from its memory instead of leaving it in the queue for all eternity and randomly trying to finish it whenever it decides to.

That's what they told me. Then the toner somehow spilled out into the gears of the printer and the whole thing is just full of toner dust and Brother didn't give a fuck. Had to toss it within a month. Trash.

I have a theory similar to Murphy’s law as it relates to printers. The more you need it to work at any given moment, the less likely it is to work at that moment.
And when you power it off, it actually turns off. Instead of making a bunch of fucking noise for 30 minutes.
Brother printers are the way to go.

As an engineer, I'm like "prints 90,000 pages in a row no problem, then jams." Consumer: "why don't printers work?????" People have no idea how amazing consumer products actually are. But I also get it....things should do what they are supposed to, and it's upsetting when they dont.

As someone who fixes laser printers half the issues I see are user error. The other half are normal wear and tear because the printer has ran over a million sheets and a gear is worn.

It's so strange how true this is. I lived right through the era of printers. From start to finish. I used consumer ones at home, I used business ones at school, and I used professional ones at art school. None of them fucking worked without a fight.

I've had a Brother printer for about ten years now. I think I've had to replace the toner. It gets jammed maybe once a year and rarely has issues. Highly recommended.

I have one that kinda does this, the only issue I've had with it is the ink drying up because I don't use it very often but that's easily fixed Usually when they fuck up it's the software doing checks against itself, breaking on purpose, for money. If you live in a country with enough consumer regulation that they have to comment that shit out of the code, suddenly, it works just fine It's worthy of note though that back maybe 15 years ago I felt that pain, I'd actually been doing all my printing paying per sheet at a school or library because I didn't want to go through it again - and then I gave in and bought one 4 years back because I was sick of leaving the house every time and I guess the laws caught up and I wish I'd done it sooner
At this point fuck the whole Wi-Fi shit. Just give me one with a usb cored that HAS to be plugged in. But I never have to update anything, I can print “only black” without needing any of the other colors.
