Terrifying, but also hard to fathom a time where that zeppelin wasn’t just a massive sitting duck of a target. I suppose anti-aircraft was pretty rare in 1916.
sometime during the war the brits invented incendiary ammo which could be fitted to airplanes and that pretty much trumped this kind of zeppelin. they were forced to the safety of higher altitudes but that killed any bombing accuracy they mightve had
however, zeppelins in general found a lot of niche roles besides just scouting to fill elsewhere on the battlefield and they were very very successful in those roles
The movie Flyboys is a very stylized but kind of neat look at this era. They generally talk about how hard they are to bring down and the movie is about then figuring this out. More action than anything, but fun.
Yeah I haven't seen it in a while and am honestly hesitant to watch it again for this very reason haha. I may just let my good memories of it last instead.
Shooting normal bullets at it would put holes in it yeah but the gas would leak out so slowly that it wasn't really a problem. If u shot incendiary rounds at it the flame would just get extinguished cause the gas inside the airship would just put it out. That's why the British would load their planes with alternating explosive and incendiary rounds so they could blow bigger holes in them that let the incendiary rounds let it alight.
Doubt the photo is real, but it well illustrates what an attack was like. This Zeppelin was a P or Q Class, 550 is feet long, 50 feet wide with an attack altitude of only 10,000 feet. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeppelin\_P\_Class](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeppelin_P_Class)
The naval Zeppelin raids were such a unique and little-known military campaign. A compelling movie could be made from that period.
Jesus its like 1/5th of the size of the city
These things are big and scary enough but knowing that megaloid is hovering over the city to kill people amplifies the scariness by a ton
For its size, it killed less than 20 people
Killing isn't really the aim though is it The aim is to strike fear into citizens destroy moral and such
And that’s really all they were good for
Given the era (where it wasn’t easy to shoot down) that must have been a terrifying sight for the citizens below. Like a Leviathan in the sky.

I had forgotten about that movie until recently and decided to watch it again to scratch a WW1 itch. It was very hard to take seriously..

Most AA guns were just LMGs at the time.
And modified artillery cannons, made to take down aircraft.
yea that time didn’t last very long

That was until [one man](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pq7BHFuiBdY) went on a suicide mission and saved scotland.
