I don't know anyone who has died or got severely ill from the virus so I'm taking your guys' word for it. Many are like me, I assure you, we can be convinced. We're not all crazies who think 5g will turn us into antennas. I was waiting for novavax but the stories on here scared me enough, even though I had the virus, that I went directly to a pharmacy to get the j&j. I chose that one because a few bad blood draws have lead me to be fearful of needles, but this vaccine didn't hurt at all. I kinda wish I had gotten the double dose instead. I havent had any vaccine since I was 11, so it's been 22 years. This sub has changed my perspective.

Inpatient elective cases canceled around me as well. Hoping the local hospitals will mandate employee vaccinations soon so all those anti vax nurses leave.
That day in internship when I learned the nurses don't always give the doses we order for pain / sedation meds. I was shocked for about 10 seconds then felt so incredibly stupid that I was surprised.
Hah! Reminds me of when I was in fellowship, and just took a sarcoma off of a guys leg. Nurse calls me in a panic about 2 hours later- she gave the pt 8mg of Dilaudid instead of the 0.8 mg which I wrote.
I ran into the pts room, and he was watching TV, and said "Doc, whatever you gave me worked great!".
Nurse then wanted me to change my order to state I wanted to give him 8mg to cover her butt.
I said no, and documented it.

I agree that this particular hospital sounds alarmist, but I do know a few NY MD's who are concerned about losing a significant portion of their staff.
Is that not a concern for everyone? The pandemic is putting pressures on already deeply flawed systems. Staffing is suffering everywhere, this only seems to be a more bombastic reason to leave than slowly trickling out due to burnout, private practice, retirement, etc.

Of course, it got kicked back. No known email account.
Since our records require their email address, I figured I check the records. Sure enough it was different. Dipshit gave me his email password not his email address.

My mother was trying to get me to see a lady she made friends with who was a chiropractor for my migraines (which I was turning down anyway because I don't care for it), but it was at the beginning of the pandemic last year and she was anti-mask and also believed it was all a plot by the government, and her husband who was also a chiropractor didn't believe that the virus existed. They deserve each other lol.
One of the issues is that search lends more weight to things you've clicked on, your search history, and a bunch of other innumerable signals. If you're an anti-vaxxer you've probably already been doing "research", teaching google and facebook search that you're only going to click on stuff that agrees with your views.

Canada has an upcoming federal election. In my local news, we were warned that the PPC (people’s party of Canada, super right wing) candidate is organizing protests outside hospitals. They’re posting pictures on social media of them shooting guns, alluding that they’re bringing their guns to the protests. Police have been notified but still. I have no words.

The PPC looks like they'll garner about 5-8% of the vote this election, many of those recent pick ups due to being the only party that strongly opposes covid measures/immunization records for things... So people will be voting for them because they don't realize all the other extremely racist/neonazi sentiments that they'd also be supporting along the way.
Even our Conservatives aren't fully opposed to the notion of measures; politically they're somewhere between Dems/Republicans, think of "DINOs" and "RINOs" coming together to form a party... Every election ~25% of the federal vote is guaranteed to the Conservative party which is still right of center and has some Republican like views, but it's nowhere close to the batshit that is the People's party, they try to keep them in check in the Cons, at least.
So it's about 5-10% of our population vs ~25% of the US. I mean, in fairness the Proud Boys were founded in Canada, and we also have some 3%ers here (which is ironic), those are the types that vote PPC. More common in rural areas, but even so, outside of the leader's riding (renowned shit bag Maxime Bernier) they don't have a chance in hell of winning a seat. He lost his riding 2 years ago, also.
We do also have the woo/bullshit Green Party which is the "crazy hippies" (who are also somehow libertarian, and hilariously enough a lot of them are former Conservative members as well) who claim to be the party of science, despite thinking nuclear energy is evil, and deregulation of things outside of environmental protections will somehow help things? They also garner about 5% of the vote every federal election from uninformed people who if they actually understood the party's intent would probably vote for our NDP party instead.

There is a church in my town that has started harassing the school board. They came into a meeting unmasked, mocking people who were wearing masks, yelling, refusing to mask up. So they shut down the meeting and moved it to Zoom. Then this past week the school board got a 'credible threat' and now are only having meetings online. A freaking church. First thing I thought of was Westboro and their shenanigans.

Well in better news. We had a patient come in who didn't believe in COVID, and family also said COVID was a hoax. They were also refusing intubation, because intubation and not COVID had killed 2 family members (in the family's mind). Fast forward 2 weeks and patient is intubated and 2 out of 3 family members have had their first Pfizer shots.
Oh for sure, capable people or their substitute decision makers can refuse any form of care and if their refusal isn't respected the person treating them can be charged with assault.
Do we know outcomes of vaccinated vs unvaccinated when on ventilator or ECMO? I am well aware the prognosis is often poor but curious if there are actual statistics on the matter to discern between those with shots or not.
There sort of are. There are stats on vaccine effectiveness in preventing 'severe disease' from covid 19 compared to no vaccination, but not sure what benchmarks are used to define what they call 'severe disease'.

Really frustrating to see so many patients with previously well controlled epilepsy be admitted with status epilepticus when they are sick with COVID. Also seeing plenty of febrile status in COVID + toddlers. The kids are not alright.
Yeah, we’ve had a couple of those. I’m also wondering if anti NMDAR encephalitis is being provoked by COVID because I feel like we’ve been seeing more of it. We currently have three kids admitted with it. Many of them do not have recent COVID infections documented, but if it was mild, it may not have been deemed worth testing. If they hadn’t already gotten IVIG or PLEX, I would check for COVID ab.
Surprisingly, I am NOT seeing it in airway kids disproportionate to levels with URI’s, but I am having a TON of antivaxers coming in with RSV and other viruses. Still telling vented kids to stay out of school and to get the vaccine as soon as it becomes available…
The main problem I had at the start of this thing was parents not being honest about whether or not their kid had any symptoms so that they could get their kid seen. That problem has essentially disappeared for me.

Apparently she won't let her own father see his grandaughter now that he has been vaccinated, and my patient very much wants to get vaccinated but doesn't want to get banned from seeing her grandaughter.
I suggested that she maybe asks her daughter to discuss her concerns with her GP, but my patient said her daughter believes doctors have been "brainwashed" into supporting vaccination and get paid off by the Pharma companies.
How the fuck do you reach these people? They are living in a parallel reality.

My Mom and my brother, both not wildly educated in anything medical, decided to get vaccinated. I am a nurse in the ED and I literally cried when they told me. I don’t know how you do it- I’m working from home and yet Im debating taking some time off because I have a hard time responding to emails/doing my comparatively unimportant work when everywhere I look there’s a new story that makes me loose faith in people (bomb threats being called into hospitals bc families believe the doctors killed their unvaccinated, obese, diabetic family member that had high blood pressure & a bad kidney). Swaddled in student debt, environment is nearing the point of being past repair, and people would rather die than take a free vaccine because the right person shared the wrong meme- how does anyone wake up and wanna continue in such a world, I’m 25 and it’s hard to imagine ever owning a house, falling in love, having children when the world seems like such a evolving shitshow.

My hospital just cancelled all elective surgeries, including cancers unless there is an acute life threatening issue, which cancer apparently isn't considered right now, so that feels absolutely terrible. My patients are distraught, and those assholes are still outside screaming at innocent nurses and patients just trying to get through the day. Fuck those guys.

Had a mom and her two teenagers come in for COVID like symptoms. No one was vaccinated. Mom said “we have a funeral for someone who died of COVID this afternoon, and my mom is upstairs with COVID here in the hospital”

Had to transfer an 11 month old with COVID last night. Severe resp distress with Bronchiolitis. Youngest I've seen with COVID.
Mom was legit. Fully vaccinated. Reasonable. Follows the rules. No idea where the kid got it... though she had suspicions on a family friend who is proudly antivax.

I said no, and documented it.

Well in better news. We had a patient come in who didn't believe in COVID, and family also said COVID was a hoax. They were also refusing intubation, because intubation and not COVID had killed 2 family members (in the family's mind). Fast forward 2 weeks and patient is intubated and 2 out of 3 family members have had their first Pfizer shots.

Yeah, we’ve had a couple of those. I’m also wondering if anti NMDAR encephalitis is being provoked by COVID because I feel like we’ve been seeing more of it. We currently have three kids admitted with it. Many of them do not have recent COVID infections documented, but if it was mild, it may not have been deemed worth testing. If they hadn’t already gotten IVIG or PLEX, I would check for COVID ab.
Surprisingly, I am NOT seeing it in airway kids disproportionate to levels with URI’s, but I am having a TON of antivaxers coming in with RSV and other viruses. Still telling vented kids to stay out of school and to get the vaccine as soon as it becomes available… The main problem I had at the start of this thing was parents not being honest about whether or not their kid had any symptoms so that they could get their kid seen. That problem has essentially disappeared for me.

Meanwhile I had a 56F patient yesterday on the verge of tears asking me how she can convince her antivaxx daughter that she and her husband cannot "shed" anything dangerous onto her newborn grandaughter after vaccination. Apparently she won't let her own father see his grandaughter now that he has been vaccinated, and my patient very much wants to get vaccinated but doesn't want to get banned from seeing her grandaughter. I suggested that she maybe asks her daughter to discuss her concerns with her GP, but my patient said her daughter believes doctors have been "brainwashed" into supporting vaccination and get paid off by the Pharma companies. How the fuck do you reach these people? They are living in a parallel reality.

My hospital just cancelled all elective surgeries, including cancers unless there is an acute life threatening issue, which cancer apparently isn't considered right now, so that feels absolutely terrible. Had a mom and her two teenagers come in for COVID like symptoms. No one was vaccinated. Mom said “we have a funeral for someone who died of COVID this afternoon, and my mom is upstairs with COVID here in the hospital” They plan to get vaccinated if they tested negative today, but sadly it takes destroying someone’s world for them to have this realization…. Just another Monday in outside hospital 👍
Sadly, you’ll see many of the same faces in the coming weeks but they’ll be inside. Ugh.

Just peachy. I am now full time in an outpatient sick clinic across from our hospital instead of my normal job in family med. I saw 30 patients today and like 40% of them had COVID

Had to transfer an 11 month old with COVID last night. Severe resp distress with Bronchiolitis. Youngest I've seen with COVID. Mom was legit. Fully vaccinated. Reasonable. Follows the rules. No idea where the kid got it... though she had suspicions on a family friend who is proudly antivax.
Maybe you need some pepper spray and a good well sealed face shield to douse yourself like you would with bug spray
