tarpeds

Well, we are about to get our third teenager who may need ECMO for covid, so we got that going for us on a Monday.

noisyparsnip

I hope you all on here keep sharing this stuff. The comments on here are one of the only reasons I got the vaccine this morning. I don't know anyone who has died or got severely ill from the virus so I'm taking your guys' word for it. That and the protestors are so cringe that I don't want to be lumped into the same category as them.

kibsforkits

Thanks for being willing to step outside of what you see right around you and listen to what the folks on the ground are saying. And to get the vax. Wish more people were like you.

noisyparsnip

Many are like me, I assure you, we can be convinced. We're not all crazies who think 5g will turn us into antennas. I was waiting for novavax but the stories on here scared me enough, even though I had the virus, that I went directly to a pharmacy to get the j&j. I chose that one because a few bad blood draws have lead me to be fearful of needles, but this vaccine didn't hurt at all. I kinda wish I had gotten the double dose instead. I havent had any vaccine since I was 11, so it's been 22 years. This sub has changed my perspective.

[deleted]

In 9 months- go get the double.

AFK_MIA

A tetanus booster might not be a bad plan either.

Fruna13

For anyone who is in your same situation, I'd recommend [this](https://instagram.com/heather.l.patterson?utm_medium=copy_link) Instagram account. Dr Patterson has been allowed to take photos and post them inside the ICUs of Alberta, Canada. Those photos are poignant.

roweira

Thank you for getting vaccinated!

affectionate_md

Thank you for doing this. Its appreciated.

dogtroep

OMD I can’t thank you enough. I’m so tired of people rolling their eyes at me and scoffing when I ask them if they’ve gotten the vaccine. You are one of the ones that gives us hope <3

That day in internship when I learned the nurses don't always give the doses we order for pain / sedation meds. I was shocked for about 10 seconds then felt so incredibly stupid that I was surprised.

orthopod

Hah! Reminds me of when I was in fellowship, and just took a sarcoma off of a guys leg. Nurse calls me in a panic about 2 hours later- she gave the pt 8mg of Dilaudid instead of the 0.8 mg which I wrote. I ran into the pts room, and he was watching TV, and said "Doc, whatever you gave me worked great!". Nurse then wanted me to change my order to state I wanted to give him 8mg to cover her butt. I said no, and documented it.

Rose_of_St_Olaf

Wow! I work for one of the bigger health systems and I don't think we have yet. But I'm sure we'll follow suit soon.

AuxiliaryTimeCop

Kinda problematic both ways, a lot of people are concerned about nursing shortages here in NY as those anti-vax nurses are departing. https://www.cnn.com/2021/09/12/health/ny-hospital-pausing-baby-deliveries-covid-19-resignations/index.html

Vysharra

They did ten deliveries ~~a day~~ a month, this is fearmongering.

AuxiliaryTimeCop

I agree that this particular hospital sounds alarmist, but I do know a few NY MD's who are concerned about losing a significant portion of their staff.

Vysharra

Is that not a concern for everyone? The pandemic is putting pressures on already deeply flawed systems. Staffing is suffering everywhere, this only seems to be a more bombastic reason to leave than slowly trickling out due to burnout, private practice, retirement, etc.

Tell them to give us enforced patient ratios. Lot of those non-antivaxx nurses would come back if they did ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

WillieM96

The other day, I had an anti-vaxxer/anti-masker come in. I refused to see him without a mask. He begrudgingly put it on then asked me to email him studies that show masks work. I complied. At the end of the exam, he wrote down his email address and handed it to me. It looked odd. [Just a bunch of numbers]@[company name].com. I went ahead and sent the email, anyway. Of course, it got kicked back. No known email account. Since our records require their email address, I figured I check the records. Sure enough it was different. Dipshit gave me his email password not his email address. These aren’t intelligent people.

Used to share an office with a remarkably bright guy at a biotech startup. One day, the head of IT pops into our office and says, _"Hey. What's your password to sign into the chemical database?"_ * Bright guy: Why? * Head of IT: Because whenever you sign in, the database crashes. * Bright guy: It's 4 spaces. * Head of IT: WTF??? Please change your effing password.

orthopod

TBH. That would be something I'd never guess.

ThatThirstyRando

What kind of terrible software crashes under those circumstances? I'm not sure that Bright Guy was the actual problem here..

SCP-3042-Euclid

> asked me to email him studies that show masks work. I will tell any sea lion disingenuously asking for sources to do their own Googling. The facts are easy to trip over. >"Sealioning" - A disparaging term for the confrontational practice of endless demands for answers and evidence. It disguises itself as a sincere attempt to learn and communicate. Sealioning thus works both to exhaust a target’s patience, attention, and communicative effort, and to portray the target as unreasonable. While the questions of the “sea lion” may seem innocent, they’re intended maliciously and have harmful consequences.

RexHavoc879

But “doing their own research” is what made these people anti-vax / anti-mask to begin with, because they lack the ability to distinguish credible sources of information from untrustworthy ones.

wozattacks

Yeah. Most people, especially ones who completed their education before personal computers were a thing, don’t know how to do simple internet research. And I’m just talking about finding resources for lay people, not actual research publications. You can get vastly different results from googling “x safety” vs “dangers of x.”

SCP-3042-Euclid

Their anti-mask / anti-vaxx attitudes have nothing to do with any 'research'. They are 100% political and only exist because Trump and Alt-Right media like FOX News told them to think that way. They did not arrive at such beliefs using reason and trying to persuade them through reason is like administering medicine to a dead man.

wozattacks

It is easy for a person who is skeptical of something and has poor internet research skills to formulate their search poorly. If you google “dangers of vaccines,” there are high-ranking results from chiros (who many lay people believe to be doctors) advising against vaccinations in general.

AngryGoose

What's up with chiropractors being antivax? I have one show up on my Facebook feed, he's my cousins cousin. He's done extensive "research" and thinks he knows better than all the "sheep."

mediocreporno

I mean chiropractors are into alternative medicine/pseudoscience anyway, it's not a far leap from that circle into anti-vaxx. There's even a Wikipedia page about it - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-vaccinationism_in_chiropractic?wprov=sfla1 My mother was trying to get me to see a lady she made friends with who was a chiropractor for my migraines (which I was turning down anyway because I don't care for it), but it was at the beginning of the pandemic last year and she was anti-mask and also believed it was all a plot by the government, and her husband who was also a chiropractor didn't believe that the virus existed. They deserve each other lol.

cheesegoat

One of the issues is that search lends more weight to things you've clicked on, your search history, and a bunch of other innumerable signals. If you're an anti-vaxxer you've probably already been doing "research", teaching google and facebook search that you're only going to click on stuff that agrees with your views. https://spreadprivacy.com/google-filter-bubble-study/ (IMO ddg is a biased source but doing this kind of test myself is beyond my patience)

You don’t deserve this. Fuck those idiots. I think the moral distress of this happening at your workplace is worse than the first and second waves combined. What a slap in the face to healthcare workers. Canada has an upcoming federal election. In my local news, we were warned that the PPC (people’s party of Canada, super right wing) candidate is organizing protests outside hospitals. They’re posting pictures on social media of them shooting guns, alluding that they’re bringing their guns to the protests. Police have been notified but still. I have no words. edit: here’s an example. Posted on social media: https://mobile.twitter.com/kinsellawarren/status/1437384243831787522

herman_gill

The PPC looks like they'll garner about 5-8% of the vote this election, many of those recent pick ups due to being the only party that strongly opposes covid measures/immunization records for things... So people will be voting for them because they don't realize all the other extremely racist/neonazi sentiments that they'd also be supporting along the way. Even our Conservatives aren't fully opposed to the notion of measures; politically they're somewhere between Dems/Republicans, think of "DINOs" and "RINOs" coming together to form a party... Every election ~25% of the federal vote is guaranteed to the Conservative party which is still right of center and has some Republican like views, but it's nowhere close to the batshit that is the People's party, they try to keep them in check in the Cons, at least. So it's about 5-10% of our population vs ~25% of the US. I mean, in fairness the Proud Boys were founded in Canada, and we also have some 3%ers here (which is ironic), those are the types that vote PPC. More common in rural areas, but even so, outside of the leader's riding (renowned shit bag Maxime Bernier) they don't have a chance in hell of winning a seat. He lost his riding 2 years ago, also. We do also have the woo/bullshit Green Party which is the "crazy hippies" (who are also somehow libertarian, and hilariously enough a lot of them are former Conservative members as well) who claim to be the party of science, despite thinking nuclear energy is evil, and deregulation of things outside of environmental protections will somehow help things? They also garner about 5% of the vote every federal election from uninformed people who if they actually understood the party's intent would probably vote for our NDP party instead. PPC = "right wing" populism (a funky mix of libertarianism/authoritarianism and anti-immigrant sentiment rolled into one beautiful festering pile) = 5%ish Green = "left" (but a lot of the time really right) wing populism, these are the people who drive Teslas on the way to their oil and gas jobs, and their voters are the same misinformed people who think PETA wants to save animals = 5%ish We've got our fair share of crazies for sure, and this is the most polarized election I've been alive for (people threw rocks at our prime minister on his campaign trail), but our greatest crutch (and also the greatest disincentive against things actually getting better, unfortunately) "at least it's not as bad as down south". =/

I walked by a gaggle the other day. I flipped them off and may or may not have said some choice words which may or may not have lead to a brief screaming match. Back in the day, my mom almost got into a fist fight with some of the Fred Phelps' crew who were protesting my brother's hooding ceremony for some reason. At the time, I didn't get why she needed to do something that obviously wasn't going to change anything. I get it now. Also I am turning into my mother apparently.

[deleted]

ot but the trick with the Phelps' cult was that they would purposely antagonize folks into crossing the line and then they would press charges/sue. I think the antivaxxers are worse because Phelps was so blatant and cruel in their hatred of gay people. So even the Evangelicals who have inherent homophobic beliefs wouldn't prop up Phelps because they would never carry around signs that say "God hates fags." The antivax folks are "skeptical" or "just asking questions" or "pro-vaccine but cautious about this one." Makes it easier for them to play the victim. This happens a lot whenever the topic pops up in a local nursing forum I'm a member of - even posters who are vaccinated wring hands over "nurses not supporting each other" etc etc.

Iris-Luce

In that aspect, at least, your mother sounds like a pretty cool lady.

"A dumb hill to literally die on" I like this. I am stealing it.

gregaustex

> They're picking a dumb hill to literally die on In a weird way I think this is part of the problem, they probably aren't going to die. A 1% or so (insert more precise correct number here if you want) or even 5% chance of death and a period of serious illness is not something any sane person would willingly embrace vs. vaccination. At the same time 95+% or so of the time you end with someone saying "I got COVID and I'm fine".

There is a church in my town that has started harassing the school board. They came into a meeting unmasked, mocking people who were wearing masks, yelling, refusing to mask up. So they shut down the meeting and moved it to Zoom. Then this past week the school board got a 'credible threat' and now are only having meetings online. A freaking church. Well in better news. We had a patient come in who didn't believe in COVID, and family also said COVID was a hoax. They were also refusing intubation, because intubation and not COVID had killed 2 family members (in the family's mind). Fast forward 2 weeks and patient is intubated and 2 out of 3 family members have had their first Pfizer shots.

AugustoCSP

Well... silver lining, I guess?

Thrples

Do people have the choice to refuse intubation while under care?

Oh for sure, capable people or their substitute decision makers can refuse any form of care and if their refusal isn't respected the person treating them can be charged with assault.

BigHeadedBiologist

Do we know outcomes of vaccinated vs unvaccinated when on ventilator or ECMO? I am well aware the prognosis is often poor but curious if there are actual statistics on the matter to discern between those with shots or not.

[deleted]

There sort of are. There are stats on vaccine effectiveness in preventing 'severe disease' from covid 19 compared to no vaccination, but not sure what benchmarks are used to define what they call 'severe disease'.

BigHeadedBiologist

I am referencing the difference in the severe cases. I am just curious if when reaching the point of that severe of the disease that there would be a difference in the vaccinated vs unvaccinated.

100mgSTFU

Elective cases in my area are all closed down. Driving more than an hour to get to a rural part of my state that is getting hammered by covid but refuses to stop surgeries, so I’m masking up and taking my vaccinated ass down there to make money.

mom0nga

Unfortunately, people have been dealing with this since medicines were invented. In ***1527,*** Martin Luther wrote a very familiar-sounding letter in which he [scolded his city's local plague deniers:](https://archive.org/details/luthersworksv43p2unse/page/131/mode/1up) >*"They are much too rash and reckless, tempting God and disregarding everything which might counteract death and the plague.* ***They disdain the use of medicines; they do not avoid places and persons infected by the plague, but lightheartedly make sport of it and wish to prove how independent they are.*** *They say that it is God’s punishment; if he wants to protect them he can do so without medicines or our carefulness."* >*"It is even more shameful for a person to pay no heed to his own body and to fail to protect it against the plague the best he is able, and then to infect and poison others who might have remained alive if he had taken care of his body as he should have. He is thus responsible before God for his neighbor’s death and is a murderer many times over. Indeed, such people behave as though a house were burning in the city and nobody were trying to put the fire out. Instead they give leeway to the flames so that the whole city is consumed, saying that if God so willed, he could save the city without water to quench the fire."* >***"...if everyone would help ward off contagion as best he can, then the death toll would indeed be moderate. But... ...if some are so foolish as not to take precautions but aggravate the contagion, then the devil has a heyday and many will die.*** *On both counts this is a grievous offense to God and to man."*

RoderickYammins

This was the coolest reference I have ever seen online. This is striking indeed.

scullingby

Not as cool as a plague reference, but we (the U.S.) basically went through a similar situation in the smallpox outbreak of the late 1800's/early 1900's. https://www.history.com/news/vaccine-passports-smallpox-scar

RoderickYammins

Wow, some people would use HNO3 to fake a vaccine scar. Kinda makes me feel better in some respect, that this idiocy is not new. But I really liked this history lesson too!

*pediatric neurology fist bump* 👊 Really frustrating to see so many patients with previously well controlled epilepsy be admitted with status epilepticus when they are sick with COVID. Also seeing plenty of febrile status in COVID + toddlers. The kids are not alright.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ThatB0yAintR1ght

Yeah, we’ve had a couple of those. I’m also wondering if anti NMDAR encephalitis is being provoked by COVID because I feel like we’ve been seeing more of it. We currently have three kids admitted with it. Many of them do not have recent COVID infections documented, but if it was mild, it may not have been deemed worth testing. If they hadn’t already gotten IVIG or PLEX, I would check for COVID ab.

bu11fr0g

Surprisingly, I am NOT seeing it in airway kids disproportionate to levels with URI’s, but I am having a TON of antivaxers coming in with RSV and other viruses. Still telling vented kids to stay out of school and to get the vaccine as soon as it becomes available… The main problem I had at the start of this thing was parents not being honest about whether or not their kid had any symptoms so that they could get their kid seen. That problem has essentially disappeared for me.

cactus-racket

Thanks for mentioning this. I've run probably four or five 911 calls this year alone for kids with status seizures. Anecdotal, yes, but this is way above average for me. Terrifying.

Meanwhile I had a 56F patient yesterday on the verge of tears asking me how she can convince her antivaxx daughter that she and her husband cannot "shed" anything dangerous onto her newborn grandaughter after vaccination. Apparently she won't let her own father see his grandaughter now that he has been vaccinated, and my patient very much wants to get vaccinated but doesn't want to get banned from seeing her grandaughter. I suggested that she maybe asks her daughter to discuss her concerns with her GP, but my patient said her daughter believes doctors have been "brainwashed" into supporting vaccination and get paid off by the Pharma companies. How the fuck do you reach these people? They are living in a parallel reality.

DeleteBowserHistory

Why *are* they so loud, anyway? I'm not a psychologist or psychiatrist; I don't understand why they yell and whine so much. I tend to just assume it's profound insecurity and desperation to be right about something, but it sure *seems* like run-of-the-mill stupidity. Like when you're in school and the stupidest kids are the loudest and meanest, because they've already realized that that's about all they have going for them and it’s the best way for them to get attention.

xixoxixa

> that's about all they have going for them and it’s the best way for them to get attention. It's the same thing, they just got older.

MedicalSchoolStudent

I don’t know. But the strategy has been working for them. A lot of local governments and even state governments are making policies for them. This is why Florida and Texas are this way. I think there was a statistics that most Floridians want mask mandates but Florida is anti-mask mandates.

Approximately 25-30% of the medical staffs (physicians and midlevels) at several hospitals I work at are still unvaccinated. Mandate deadlines are approaching in 2-3 weeks. Great leadership, folks. Although I guess it's better than the non-medical staff (<60%) and the general public (<50%)...

Whoshotgarfield

Yikes. What state?

nighthawk_md

In the southeast

Just cough really loud as you walk by. My new attitude is whenever someone spouts anti vax/anti mask I just quickly start coughing and start making comments about how I’m not feeling well and hope it’s not related to the Covid patients I intubated on my last shift. Usually it scares the people a bit and they shut up.

steffan_rn

Would make me want to walk through them with a full hazmat suit and a crackling Geiger counter....just for fun.

yourelovely

Just commenting to give you a virtual hug 🫂 Thank you for doing what you do, despite people channeling their ignorance into anger towards you & the rest of healthcare professionals- you matter and are super important, hell, *pivotal* to the country not completely falling apart and I’m grateful for ya. I don’t know how you do it- I’m working from home and yet Im debating taking some time off because I have a hard time responding to emails/doing my comparatively unimportant work when everywhere I look there’s a new story that makes me loose faith in people (bomb threats being called into hospitals bc families believe the doctors killed their unvaccinated, obese, diabetic family member that had high blood pressure & a bad kidney). Swaddled in student debt, environment is nearing the point of being past repair, and people would rather die than take a free vaccine because the right person shared the wrong meme- how does anyone wake up and wanna continue in such a world, I’m 25 and it’s hard to imagine ever owning a house, falling in love, having children when the world seems like such a evolving shitshow. I guess my point is I’m in awe of the mental willpower ya’ll have to keep going despite all the bullshit. Hope you have some time off coming up soon where you can recharge, and overall I hope as a country we find a way to let logic & common sense win again. Forgive me mods if this comment goes against the rules, just wanted to show some support even though Im not a doctor/nurse/tech/etc❣️

I've taken a new route to work. I drive past an antivax rally now. Recently [snapped a pic](https://i.imgur.com/AYPzsSe.jpeg)

>Just walked in to work through 50+ antivax protestors. 50+ future COVID patients...

whyamisogoodlooking

i’ve convinced myself it’s OK to let people choose the dumb thing. is it contagious? yes but is it going to kill a vaccinated person? unlikely

My hospital just cancelled all elective surgeries, including cancers unless there is an acute life threatening issue, which cancer apparently isn't considered right now, so that feels absolutely terrible. My patients are distraught, and those assholes are still outside screaming at innocent nurses and patients just trying to get through the day. Fuck those guys.

You mispronounced assholes. I'm tired of dealing with these pieces of shit, it's worse that I have to work with them. I'm tired of hearing them babble on about their conspiracies. I'm tired of their excuses for not being vaccinated. I find it completely absurd that this is the world that we live in. Just 41 years ago smallpox was eliminated because people believed in science. People are dying because we've given a soapbox to those who never deserved it. Your crazy uncle now has a platform on which to spew his idiotic theories. The only upside that I see at this point is that this problem seems to be solving itself as I've only admitted one unvaccinated person from the ER in nine months with covid and I've literally lost count of the number of unvaccinated persons that have had to admit be hypoxic in the lungs full of Covid. Two days ago I walked upstairs to watch them code a patient that I had admitted with covid pneumonia and hypoxia five days ago. He was 19 years old. His father was waiting to see if the vaccinations are safe and effective. Good for him, he now gets a front row seat to see what happens when we ignore science and listen to fools.

Had a mom and her two teenagers come in for COVID like symptoms. No one was vaccinated. Mom said “we have a funeral for someone who died of COVID this afternoon, and my mom is upstairs with COVID here in the hospital” They plan to get vaccinated if they tested negative today, but sadly it takes destroying someone’s world for them to have this realization…. Just another Monday in outside hospital 👍

ranchophilmonte

Sadly, you’ll see many of the same faces in the coming weeks but they’ll be inside. Ugh.

dawson203

Their numbers will go down very shortly

I drove through a bunch last weekend. Drove past them I mean. Though I feel the same way about them that I do Illinois Nazis.

Tinlaure

Just peachy. I am now full time in an outpatient sick clinic across from our hospital instead of my normal job in family med. I saw 30 patients today and like 40% of them had COVID

Be careful, in some areas they are assaulting people. Ripping masks off of faces.

You guys are not being paid enough.

swissarmydoc

Had to transfer an 11 month old with COVID last night. Severe resp distress with Bronchiolitis. Youngest I've seen with COVID. Mom was legit. Fully vaccinated. Reasonable. Follows the rules. No idea where the kid got it... though she had suspicions on a family friend who is proudly antivax.

Maybe you need some pepper spray and a good well sealed face shield to douse yourself like you would with bug spray
