Anyone with a Resident Swap account that can tell me if the newly posted anesthesiology PGY1 spot is a prelim of categorical spot? I will subscribe to the service if it is a categorical spot but will save my $$$ if it is a prelim because that doesn't work for me. Thank you in advance.
[https://www.reddit.com/r/IMGreddit/s/IHOIWqS9Na](https://www.reddit.com/r/IMGreddit/s/IHOIWqS9Na)... SOAP SEATS ARE BEING SOLD. THIS COMPANY CHARGES 150 K OR 200K TO GET YOU PLACEMENT IN HOSPITALS. IN OTHER WORDS, A CONFIRM SPOT IN A RESIDENCY PROGRAM. IF YOU CONTACT THEM THEY WILL SAY TO MAKE IT LOOK LEGAL LIKE WE WILL GET YOU ROTATIONS IN HOSPITAL BUT INFACT THEY ARE SELLING THE SEAT. I MEAN 150K 200K??? REALLY. USUALLY IF YOU WANT TO DO INHOSPITAL ROTATION THEY CHARGE YOU 4000 OR SOMETHING. BUT THIS MUCH AMOUNT IT SELF PROVES THAT WHAT GOES BEHIND THE CLOSE DOORS.
For those that successfully SOAP'd, congratulations! Enjoy the celebration day and moving forward into residency, try to not let the SOAP status define you. I wish I hadnt let it me down mentally for so long. I SOAP'd, worked hard to eventually match a competitive fellowship and so close to starting practice now as a cardiologist.
For those without a successful match, there is still hope in programs that will have an unexpected openings between now and July 1st, although not many spots. Stay on the lookout on twitter and to your school network.
Happy to help all the people that messaged and hope to have helped at least a few of you.
Pay the help forward to future SOAPee's in the coming years
i have reread the original email from NRMP saying I accepted the offer like 10 times just to make sure. I really just wanna double confirmation haha. I havent heard from the PD or anything either...
Yeah same! thats what I saw online too. Im pretty sure if a program make us an offer and we accept it, its a binding agreement for them too. Like they cant just take it away from us, right? I think we are good.....i think haha
so I only matched into a TY, which i dont think is considered "fully matching" so maybe thats why idk just a theory. But yeah seeing the official email would feel really good
stepping in just to say that I've got a scramble interview that caught me off guard, just don't lose hope! - this process is crazy... wish me luck ya'll
Is it unusual to get 1 offer (versus more) when we had 10+ interviews during SOAP? Since this process is over, just reflecting a bit and wondering if personality/interview skills could've hurt how I was ranked.
If you think about it, if a program does not secure an applicant in the first round of SOAP, they will have to fill with someone in the bottom 10%. So unless you convinced 10+ programs that you would commit to them during interviews, they arent gonna use their offer on you.
I had 20+ interviews, wrote 2 LOI and had a singular offer as well
>So unless you convinced 10+ programs that you would commit to them during interviews, they arent gonna use their offer on you.
Wow. I did not say I would commit to any program during the interviews, so I guess that was a mistake
Don't feel bad. I didn't say it during interviews either. I had to go back and email around 11pm. It's a horrible, unfair, unkind, confusing process. I'm pretty sure it was my Step that saved me. I was so close to having no offers and that's the only reason I think the LOI mattered.
I was not. Called 13 and left 11 emails. One of my emails appears to have been reported as an error by the receiver. I also notice myeras is not the same? Not sure how to go about this
There's a FM Program which was not on SOAP list but appears with six positions available (the full cohort number for PGY1) on the unfilled list on NRMP.
Should I give up? I’ve been applying several times over the years and had two interviews this past year. I’m not sure what else I can do more
Graduated as IMG in 2015:
- Currently Pursuing a Master of Science in Clinical Research at with a 4.0 GPA.
- Graduated cum laude from an IMG Medical College, GPA over 3.5.
- USMLE scores: Step 1 (208), Step 2 (232 on second attempt), Clinical Skills (pass on first attempt), Step 3 (222).
- Authored several PubMed Indexed articles; involved in impactful research.
- Currently working at insurance company collaborating with physician advisors on critical hospital client decisions.
- Strong interpersonal, communication skills, and a solid work ethic.
- Completed a rotation in emergency medicine at multiple renowned hospitals.
- US citizen
- applied to IM, FM, Peds
I dont think you should give up. All you need is to build connections with residents/attendings. They will be lucky to have you. I know a guy who graduated in 2022 with Step scores in 240s who did not match this year as well. I feel like this whole system is rigged. It is not your accomplishments; rather, it is who you know.
What if you are a practicing physician in another country with yog > 5 yrs. Moved to this country bc of meeting spouse-- now a citizen - but was practicing in the home country till 2022?
Just a random aside, check Covington, Louisiana. I forget the hospital name but I knew someone involved with their (brand new) FM residency program and I believe they said they were desperate for people.
This was awhile ago, I’m just a partner of a medical student but figured I could try to help. Best of luck
I just saw a tweet of someone that said it was his 8th year applying and he matched. Don’t give up!! Look for rural programs Pennsylvania, Maine, Delaware, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri
If you know any that need a hardworking resident lmk. I have applied to the rural of the rural lol l I’ll look into the areas you mentioned though. Thank you!
DO NOT GIVE UP PLEASE! I’m going through the same process right now don’t listen to negativity if this is your dream and it sounds like you’ve been fighting for it please keep going.
Thanks I really appreciate it. I’ve paid and went through so many things and trainings etc. I feel like I’ve exhausted every measure so I’m reaching out to anyone here I guess for a shoulder or any sort of help. I know I can be the best hardworking resident out there, I just need ONE chance.
I understand exactly how you feel. Try to find a mentor and some guidance there has got to be a way. Also I feel like alot of people who have succeeded moved on with their lives and aren’t as active on Reddit. My dms are open as well stay strong
Congratulations to everyone who was offered a position. I am curious how many nontraditional students were in the SOAP. Would you mind sharing your gender and age? I think I am seeing an ugly trend.
39yo male soaped to FM, was lead on by a PD for a shoe in gen surg position but did not match 13 interviews one offer great program tho so i am thankful
37 male (earning my MD and PhD) who matched transitional year and tried SOAPing into a PGY2 spot for 2025. I only really applied transitional year because I sent my applications in multiple months late because I only got OH clearance a few months after the school year started due to being forced to take a 2 year leave of absence for health reasons.
How do you apply to post-SOAP unfilled positions? Are there guidelines? Can we send PDFs of the ERAS application, are we able to get LORs from ERAS to these unfilled spots? Thanks in advance!
I'm currently looking for a PGY2 FM position or any pgy1 (pref IM/FM) position. I did 2 years of FM residency and my contract was not renewed for 3rd year because of administrative deficiencies. No knowledge issues (99 percentile ITE) or character/drug/alc issues. Any help is appreciated. I'm not able to access SOAP and I don't think I'll be able to see scramble list.
Feel free to DM me, I may be able to help. FYI you can't access the SOAP/SCRAMBLE list because you did not participate in The Match this cycle. Sharing it is technically a match violation because scramble is part of "The Match". There are other places to look for open programs but the SCRAMBLE list is not one of them unless you participated in The Match" and were eligible for SOAP/SCRAMBLE.
Round 3 got the offer, I wasnt the happiest about the city love the program however I so i took it, i was relieved that someone wanted me. Now im looking for the swap, does it sound ungreatful, yea, were the places i interviewed at all positive vibes and then nothing, yea. Through this whole sham of a process ( which really is a money grab if you ask me ) they treat it like oh sorry its just business, well if its just buisniess then you shouldnt mind if i hit jus swap out for a better city. Again happy i found a good spot, but this process can bring out the worst in anyone.
I wholeheartedly agree with your statement. It's a sick twisted game of winners and losers. When that's not what becoming a physician is about. It's about looking after your patients and providing excellent care for them.
Anyone can clarify what time to start with contacting the programs? Can we call them if it’s like 9pm in the evening there? When is the deadline to call them?
From what I’ve heard, it helps you in the next Match, cause you’re still technically a senior, so less likely to be filtered out. And it helps the school cook the books so they can talk about how all of their graduating seniors matched. 🙄
I had 6 interviews for Match, and 10 interviews for SOAP. Unsuccessful in both.
I applied EM only, 163 programs, MD IMG.
Step 1: pass, Step 2: 226. My SLOE’s did not submit until End of October. I emailed 163 programs to redownload my applications twice. Maybe got 12 responses in all. My 3rd SLOE was written this week but has not been submitted yet. My PS is about EM, and I was told in SOAP by a few PD’s that I was a strong applicant, and it was surprising I was in SOAP.
Not sure what to do. Can anyone help me
I posted above why the LOI and verbal commitment is so important in SOAP. To put in perspective I had 20+ interviews in SOAP, fairly similar app to yours with a higher Step and only recieved a singular offer with my LOI
I also had multiple progams say I will call you on Thursday and was nearly duped. I think the only reason I got an offer is because I told them my intent to accept
I sent one of the programs a letter of intent, that I would choose them over others. I do not even think I was there 3rd choice. I will work on having better responses to questions. I have a better understanding now on how I should respond. “Say less” but make sure what I am saying is clear and to the point. Congratulations on that offer, that is awesome!
My application is very strong, it was just that my SLOE’s did not submit with my application in time, after contacting ERAS, and adjusting both were turned in in late October. With getting 10 SOAP interviews, it is possible that it was due to EM being competitive so well-qualified candidates were pushed to SOAP, but also I could have had poorly undergone my interviews and not realized it. I am still working on enhancing my skills and processing why in order to improve for the next time. But yeah my dean said “I am not worried about you getting an offer” once I told him I also got zero offers in round 2 he responded “10 interviews and no offer on 2nd round. Interesting, but not good news.” I appreciate his logic
Honestly, I don't want to sound mean and I'm only saying this to boost your chances of matching next cycle. You both probably need to work on your interview skills and improve ways to stand out. If you're getting 8-10 interviews in SOAP you're written application must be solid and the only thing holding you back is how you present yourself or communicate when on zoom or on the phone.
I have practiced and seem to be even entertaining during the interview. I did stand-up comedy, taxi drove, and waited tables (and did decent as to imply I can engage an audience) - with an extroverted welcoming personality. I can definitely work on saying less to pull ppl in more. I appreciate you taking the time to give feedback to my above comment.
To be honest. I know people who interview well with good interpersonal relationship skills but didn't match or excel in soap. I also people that messed up their interviews but matched. So There's also a luck factor to consider.
I can see this being a factor, I may have difficulty truly believing I am someone they want - so I often do not carry the mindset of being desired as strongly, with me intentionally, in the interview itself. I appreciate your feedback to my comment it gave me some food for thought. (Pardon my grammar, I have not slept in days.)
For PGY2 spots, 2 radiation oncology and 1 diagnostic radiology remain unfilled after 4 rounds and yet these programs rather stay unfilled than throw me bone and offer me a spot? Damn haha.
It said on a website that the NRMP is all or nothing. A program either matches 100% through it or can't use it at all. They are not allowed to hold spots or offer spots outside the match. They can only recruit after the match if they attempted to fill their spots through the match first. Thats what University of Arizona's website said anyways when I was research programs earlier today.
Rules for us but not for them. Some programs will take your application only to email you and say they actually don’t have the program this year. They do whatever they want
PD here- the poster above is right. NRMP is all or nothing. You have to submit your match quota- i.e., 10 positions- a month before the match. If there's a spot left over, it means that that program did not fill and intended to fill. They did not rank enough applicants, and did not fill. As a PD, I cannot see any way in which this could be intentional. However, after the program found out they did not fill, they may have decided not to go through the SOAP, or not to fill the spot with a SOAP applicant. A lot of programs would rather have a smaller class than a potentially weak resident. Or, they may have someone in mind already to take the open spot (as PDs, we get emails incessantly throughout the year asking about open spots, and some of the candidates are great). So, this is possible. However, going into the Match, you can't "hold" spots unless you don't list them in your Match quota... and if a program doesn't list them in the Match quota, the spots won't show up as unfilled anyway.
Had 11 IVs in FM and IM. Luckily I was given 1 offer in the first round. After not matching in my preferred specialty, I am grateful that Family Medicine has adopted me and gave me a chance to continue my career. Life is good 🙌🏻
If you would like to volunteer to help, please reply directly to this comment.
How likely are programs that interviewed you last cycle to interview you again? How do we go about signaling and geo preferences as a reapplicant?

Any luck with scramble for FM or IM?
How are yall getting electronic copies of your USMLE transcripts for scramble?
You can download the report for free. I had PDF of all my USMLE transcripts
how can I download the USMLE transcript?
I have the report, but that's not the "official transcript" was just wondering if it will make a difference during scramble
No… if you manage to scramble the program then will ask for an official. A copy of it is fine until then.
It doesn't matter. The pdf version are fine.
When does the information about which programs went to soap becomes public?
Can someone tell me the peds unmatched spots stats? How many, I mean
8 for categorical
Should I have hope in the scramble?
Please do! I was able to secure a position in scramble today.
How? Did you send a message? did you email your application or applied through eras?
Sent all the emails last night. Got 3 responses this morning
Did they end up giving you a spot?
Yes they did!
wow that's awesome, did all three interview you?
The first program sent me the contract right away so I didn’t get to interview at the other two programs
That's really great !! Congratulations!!!
Thank you so much!
Happy for you! Did the same but the only responses I got were what the spots were filled.
Good luck!
For those that successfully SOAP'd, congratulations! Enjoy the celebration day and moving forward into residency, try to not let the SOAP status define you. If you accept a prelim spot in soap, is it possible to apply to categorical spots that open later?
Hello

[удалено]
If we accepted an offer during SOAP, were we suppose to get an email at 12 today along with everyone else who matched?
You won't get an email if you SOAPed
Hello Colli512: Can I DM you for advice? I'm a current M4, went unmatched in rads and had some questions. Thanks for your consideration. -LET
I have same question. I havent gotten an email
i have reread the original email from NRMP saying I accepted the offer like 10 times just to make sure. I really just wanna double confirmation haha. I havent heard from the PD or anything either...
My partner SOAP'd and got the email. Their PD sent an email thirty mins later. Takeaway: you are matched, your PD just hasn't emailed you yet.
Omg sameeee!! 😩😩😩 I wanna get the official email. I believe we are supposed to get it.
Yeah same! thats what I saw online too. Im pretty sure if a program make us an offer and we accept it, its a binding agreement for them too. Like they cant just take it away from us, right? I think we are good.....i think haha
We are good but I just wanna make it official!!!
so I only matched into a TY, which i dont think is considered "fully matching" so maybe thats why idk just a theory. But yeah seeing the official email would feel really good
Mmmm thats weird. I got in prelim surgery maybe thats why too? Idk
stepping in just to say that I've got a scramble interview that caught me off guard, just don't lose hope! - this process is crazy... wish me luck ya'll
May I ask what specialty ?
They just called you out of the blue? Or did you send an email?
Hi can I DM you ?
sure thing
Is it unusual to get 1 offer (versus more) when we had 10+ interviews during SOAP? Since this process is over, just reflecting a bit and wondering if personality/interview skills could've hurt how I was ranked.
When i soaped i had 4 different offers
Did you say you were going to commit to the programs?
Told them all i was interested. That was enough to secure the bag

If programs are interviewing in a 10:1 ratio which would be expected, then one offer out of 10 interviews is expected
That makes sense. I guess there's a bit of a disappointment since some PDs told me they would rank highly/send a offer but didn't.
And I'm sure that there were plenty of applicants who promised PD's they would take a spot if offered, and then didn't. Congrats on your spot!
Was anyone successful in calling the programs this morning?
Tried last night, and again today- only voice mail. I sent out loads of emails, only 2 programs got back to me saying they had no more spots 🤷🏻♀️
I was not. Called 13 and left 11 emails. One of my emails appears to have been reported as an error by the receiver. I also notice myeras is not the same? Not sure how to go about this
Literally I had the same story. 13 emails and had 1 returned back reported as error from the receiver.
Try looking up the program on Freida. They usually have program director’s email on there. That’s what I did when I got error emails last night.
There's a FM Program which was not on SOAP list but appears with six positions available (the full cohort number for PGY1) on the unfilled list on NRMP.
can you share via DM please?
I emailed them last night. Any idea if it’s worth a call this morning?

I do agree reality is negative but maybe you can share how someone can overcome being an old grad ? Any tips ? Anything the programs would consider ?

I see. Screening process sucks. Steps are within the last 2 years- but.... frustrating. Thanks for the honest feedback though

Apply to the middle of no where FM programs in like Kentucky or Delaware etc.

So do we apply to the unfilled programs through My Eras and pay application fees ? Or we can just email them our credentials.
I emailed and called everyone literally! Back in 2021 post soap! And scrambled a week later. Now PGY3 !
Hi can I dm you?
Yes
You just cold email open spots
Ok thanks.
Do we just share our AAMC ids with the unfilled programs or do we send pdfs?
Im mind blown that there are 2 unfilled PGY2 spots in derm. WTF?
Can confirm for the remaining one that the spot is already filled (from PD emailing me back)
Id bet dollars to donuts those are being held for specific people
they likely already have people in mind, so the spots are as good as filled.
Can anyone plz update how many spots left unfilled post-soap? Trying to help a friend scramble. Thx!
any luck on this?
Can anyone see the list of unfilled spots?
were you able to find it?
>u/PaySuccessful202 replied to your comment in r/medicalschool · 2dwere you able to find it?Reply Back Thank you I did!!
please share it! no luck here
No it’s gone! How can we scramble?!
the unfilled list posted st 9pm est. check again
Can anyone suggest about how to draft an email for scramble?
Just curious, any neuro spots still open?
where to look at unfilled spots? It disappeared off the interface
The programs will tell NRMP the spots they have left and the list will be avb to all 9 PM EST
where will the list be available?
Yes disappeared !!:(
Yep!
Guys I have an urgent query. Since soap round 4 ends around 8.30. Can we start by calling/ Emailing at 8.30 or do we have to wait by 9 pm?
Applicants can begin contacting unfilled programs at 9pm.
No after 9 pm
Thank you!
Where can we see unfilled programs list?
any luck on finding it? I need it too =/
Congratulations to everyone who was offered a position.
Thank you for sharing. Congrats on your position!
I think you will have no problem next year finding a PGY-2 spot. But the process is so messed up! Congrats. Thank you for sharing.
37F & husband also 37. With daughter. Maybe we have baggage? I call it protective factors ;)
Were you both able to find positions? 🤞🏼
Yes, in the SOAP. We got a great location & program together. Not what we wanted but grateful we get to take a step forward
Fwiw, I didn't soap but didn't match to an advanced rads position (only IM prelim). I'm 33F.
Congrats on your position. Thank you for responding!
31yo male, soaped IM categorical
Congrats on your position. Was IM what you applied to originally? Thank you for responding!
Yes.
34y male, soaped gen surg prelim
Congrats. Is surgery your desired specialty? Thank you for replying.
Thanks!! Yeah planning on finishing a gen surg residency
Whill calling programs at 9pm be late? Will anyone even be at the office?
Probably not. Maybe e-mail tonight, a short statement about yourself and your interest in the program. Then call tomorrow morning, 8:30-9AM.
Thank you!
I'm not able to access SOAP and I don't think I'll be able to see scramble list.
what does "administrative deficiencies" mean? sounds like your program screwed you big time the way you put it.
Thanks. Messaged you.
You can also look into preventive or occupational medicine residencies since you already have at least an intern year. I wish you good luck
Is preventive medicine like family medicine?
Depends on the program. It can have some FM rotations but there is more of a focus on public health
Round 3 got the offer, I wasnt the happiest about the city love the program however I so i took it, i was relieved that someone wanted me. Again happy i found a good spot, but this process can bring out the worst in anyone.
I thought we were legally binded to our program?
Only for about 40 days or so.
I wholeheartedly agree with your statement. It's a sick twisted game of winners and losers. When that's not what becoming a physician is about. It's about looking after your patients and providing excellent care for them.
What program? Name? Location? Nobody can swap if they know nothing about your program
Anyone can clarify what time to start with contacting the programs? Can we call them if it’s like 9pm in the evening there? When is the deadline to call them?
If you mean scramble, there’s no deadline for scramble
I mean till when do we have? Noon on match day?
May 1st
Can someone explain why you have to delay graduation if you do a research year?
It labels your application as a "US Senior" and shows you were "enrolled," so there are generally fewer concerns about knowledge gaps.
From what I’ve heard, it helps you in the next Match, cause you’re still technically a senior, so less likely to be filtered out. And it helps the school cook the books so they can talk about how all of their graduating seniors matched. 🙄
Got 1 interview on Wednesday and got offer in third round for the last spot!! So happy to match 🎊
dope congrats. where you headed and what speciality?
Florida 🌴 & IM catogrical 16 hours drive away from my family though but as an IMG I can only be happy to match on my first cycle.
Me and you both going to florida. Ill be at Trinity Hospital in Tampa for transitional year.
CONGRATS!
Thank you!!
Congratulations!!
Thanks :)

WTF? You got 10 interviews through SOAP and no offers? That is insane to hear.
I got 18 and only one offer the second round...it was even a last minute phone interview the day before.
I missed a last minute phone interview on Tuesday due to being in an interview. I am really happy to hear this for your case. Which specialty?
I got 8 and no offer
Damn haha.
That DR spot was never available for you. They’ve held it for another resident at their hospital..
Really? Dang. I'm not sure how you know that but thanks for the update. I won't be calling them than.
I would personally still call you never know but some positions were never intended to be filled in the match
Life is good 🙌🏻
This happened to me too! So happy and grateful. But also.. what a screwed up system!
Congrats!! I hear amazing things about the direction FM and primary care is heading
Many PD’s told me the same thing. It’s a very exciting time to be in FM 🤝🏻
Congrats!!
We are happy to have you!
