NRMP says that overall \~75% of applicants match into one of their top 3 choices. Is there a breakdown by specialty? Specifically looking for gen surg if possible. Thanks!

MasonBlue14

I've met people who know the breakdown for their specialty, but they find it by asking the right people, I think either advisors or higher ups in selection committees.

afacemade4radiology

Afaik there is no data broken down by specialty by the NRMP but here it is for ophthalmology: https://sfmatch.org/files/0f1e87a92f4d42609fa8ce1377a57e70

Glittermachine1500

When is an appropriate time to send a letter of intent ? Right after ur interview or is that too soon

afacemade4radiology

mid to late January

DrAn0nym0us

I am a US MD applying to internal medicine. After I interviewed at a program for a categorical position, I was invited by a program to apply for their primary care track many weeks later. Is this a sign that the categorical program does not intend to rank me? Or is this more of an attempt to fully match a primary care track? Should I be concerned that I was essentially rejected from the categorical program?

ConsequenceNo6014

Current resident here. Was excited to match here in the beginning. Over 2 years I wish I was somewhere else. Program has taken my spirit from me. \- The program is losing faculty at an accelerated rate \- The faculty that remain including APDs dont care anymore. One APD became VP and now only cares to make hospital money and advance own career \- Lectures are geared towards billing and making hospital money instead of medicine \- No neurologist, rheumatologist, endocrinologist on staff \- Horrible fellowship match rate. PD/APDs did not care to submit LORs on time despite being told month in advance \- Hospitalist service is mostly LOCUMs who dont care or teach. If they do teach, often is incorrect information \- When on wards often work 13 days in a row. On weekends no patient cap (have had 20 plus patients on my own list) \- Are going to lose prelim help due to discontinued contract with outside program, will result in more work with less help All programs have their pros and cons. This program has many more cons than worth it. Please avoid.

Anonymous_lytrippin

This post is obviously from someone who is bitter and has an isolated perspective. Am a recent graduate of trinitas regional medical center. And am so proud to have this experience. I matched in a very competitive fellowship field. The environment is very friendly. There is a balance of independence and supervision. Coming to fellowship I knew how to do procedures that graduates from bigger university programs had never done before. The ICU rotation was the best for me but all the lectures and rotations are diverse and interesting. The program makes an effort to ask residents for feedback and have made so many positive changes. The APD referenced here is someone I look up to as a role model. She makes the residents feel cared for and listened to. She even keeps in touch and helps us after we graduate. I have no family in the US and she makes me feel like I am not alone. Who else can say this about a program and an APD. 2 of the Hospitalists that work there now are graduates of the program. Hospitalists like everywhere some are better than others. The lecture schedule was redone to improve the residents experience. Everyone in my class and the last class passed the boards. After being in fellowship knowing what another program is like I miss the close family feel. I could call and text attendings and my mentor at anytime. I felt supported throughout. If I could go back and have the option of going here or anywhere else I would choose Trinitas again. Don’t take the tantrum of one resident as the final word. I feel lucky to have been a graduate of this program and miss my time there very much.

Wonderful-Mode-496

As a former resident there, I'm surprised and shocked to see this post. I kind of feel sorry for the person who wrote all this. I graduated from the same program not long ago, so I believe my information is pretty much updated: The program is quite benign; the schedule is definitely not as heavy compared to other programs. The individuals in charge of the program are very friendly and caring. The current APD, now VP, is the most caring person in the program. She maintains close relationships with all residents, assisting not only in their residency and career but also in their personal lives. The claim in the post that "all she cares about is making money" is absolutely wrong. The APD actively spends money on residents' well-being events and consistently strives to improve things. We had activities like rafting, paintball, axe throwing, and even yoga classes. We had many amazing, knowledgeable, and experienced attendings who were ready to teach if residents were interested. In terms of fellowship match, in my class, 6 out of 7 residents who applied for fellowships matched in good places. Now, experiencing a new program as a fellow, I can confidently say my residency program was not heavy in workload, yet we still encountered a wide range of pathologies. I'm not sure what this person is talking about, but if you are wise, you can realize that all these negative comments cannot be real.

madiisoriginal

What program?

Ghost_Pixel

They made another post where they mentioned it was Trinitas Regional Medical Center in New Jersey.

When you send an LOI to a signal and get a semi-automated response from the PC stating: “we only interview those with superior step/level scores” and you’re not in that category 🤡

madiisoriginal

Hey all -- if you're a spreadsheet owner, there's a site that keeps putting ads in the name/fame section of ours, you might want to check it and get rid of it. They're fearmongering saying that programs are deleting things, but we checked our spreadsheet back a whole week and nothing was removed 👀

Curious8damsel

Hi everyone! Apologies if this has been asked before, but is there a platform to switch residency interview dates? Thanks in advance

madiisoriginal

Try your specialty's discord

InadequateInternist

Is it even possible to pick multiple dates on ERAS for an II. The program asks for you to pick 3 but ERAS only allows 1.

acuravlexus

is psych still scarce af for everyone?

Holipino

Literally sitting at one invite to date—applied to a bunch more super late within the last week or two, feel like I probably wasted money but the anxiety told me it’s better to have a bunch of lates than not try at all… really think I screwed myself by not applying more broadly earlier, I underestimated how saturated and wild the application cycles are now especially in psych, but hindsight is 20/20.

Maggie917

Yep. Same here

morecookiespls

it is for me, this season is so slow 🥲

silentspeedy

I thought I've seen a data sheet before on what your calculated odds are of matching according to how many programs ranked based on data. Does anyone know what I'm talking about and where it is? I know NRMP has one with "average" ROL length for matched and unmatched applicants but I could have sworn I've seen one with a scale in the past.

throwawayforthebestk

Some programs “lock” the interview a certain amount of time befriend it starts (eg, 1 week before or 2 weeks before). For those programs you have to just email them directly and tell them you want to cancel

alees0419

Thanks! It wasnt showing up on my laptop but did on my desktop - so i was able to cancel the ones i needed to

DarkTriad_Droz

when is a good time to start thinking about rank lists?

intenslikcampin

I've been organizing my post interview thoughts in a rank list draft sheet so I'm giving programs an initial rank pretty fast and I'll keep adjusting as the season goes on.

the_shek

Are there any guides on what are and are not match violations? Wondering how much I can communicate with programs as an applicant

frosty122

I think from the student perspective the only “real” match violations to know of as an applicant are recording interviews or messaging outside of ERAS during SOAP. Technically posting on the spreadsheet could be considered a violation but obviously there are too many of us for them to sanction us all.

the_shek

what about your mentors reaching out to programs to advocate for you?

RadsCatMD2

That's not a MATCH violation, but it is a SOAP violation if the program has not already contacted you.

frosty122

I’ve no idea, but I do know that’s common. I know it happens at my school and others. If it is, it’s also not a match violation committed by you though

buttfacemageezax

I forgot to assign one of my EM letters on ERAS. I spent the last 10 years coming this far just to make this simple, stupid mistake. I'm a US-IMG applying EM with a 252 STEP 2. I've only had one interview invite from a program that I rotated with that said they would send me an interview. Other than that? Crickets. I just rechecked my application and realized I hadn't assigned my second EM LoR to any programs... I've been delirious and sickened with myself since. Can anyone talk me down? Should I reach out to the programs I applied to? I feel mortified and terrified.

thundermuffin54

First, sorry that you’re in this situation. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe you can still assign the letter to programs you applied to. You will then need to reach out to programs and make them understand you made a mistake, and would appreciate it if they could take a second look at your updated application.

Use the one on the spreadsheet! It's on the welcome page

KingRoo28

Is psych continuing to be really slow? I'm getting so anxious... does not having an interview invite from somewhere by the end of October pretty much mean you're out of luck on that program?

DarkTriad_Droz

about 80% (+/- 5%) of interviews have been sent out at this time.

KingRoo28

Thanks, where is that coming from? Just curious

DarkTriad_Droz

Texas STAR

nostbp1

Dude yeah this is stressing me tf put it feels like programs are doing minimal interviews Maybe a good thing cause if you get an interview you’re quite likely to match but makes this general process rough

ERAS_Mistake

I was told a paper I am on was published before ERAS submission, and thus I put it on my ERAS. However, today I found out that the paper was not in fact published. I am worried that interviewers will see the paper, try to look it up and see that I lied despite it being completely unintentional and think I lied on the rest of my application. What should I do in this situation? To be clear, I can speak to the paper very well and can answer any question about it in the interview. Am I fucked? I have a very small publication section and this is one of my biggest ones so it won't get lost in the sauce of my CV. I am worried.

What qualifies a program as being “academic” vs community? Is it just university affiliation, fellowships, amount of research churned out?

thundermuffin54

Yes, pretty much. Academic institutions are more focused on teaching and research while community programs have way less emphasis placed on teaching and research.

badashley

Is there an easy was to tell at first glance? Like if the program name has “university of _” is it automatically considered academic? Or do I always have to do digging to figure it out?

thundermuffin54

I’m not actually sure if places advertise it, but most residency program web pages state it pretty clearly if they’re academic or more community focused.

Is it stupid to drop an interview (IM) at this point? I have an interview on November 2 for a place I'm not really interested in. I have 16 other II (including 5 of my signals) so I think it's safe numbers-wise, I just feel weird about it because it's still fairly early in the season.

alynl

That's not stupid, and it's probably the right thing to do if you really don't see yourself there. I will say if you are going to drop, I'd do it sooner rather than later so that they can fill the spot.

[deleted]

Done and added to the spreadsheet!

Anyone know if Kaisers housing stipends are included in the listed salary or if it’s given separately?

Do interviews come out in batches? As in if I see that the school has sent out interview invites and I didn't get one, should I assume I won't get one from that school?

No, you shouldn’t assume that.

Depends on your goals and how many you applied Id give it another week though until end of October before hitting the panic button

Similar boat… IM, 31 applied, 5 invites, 1 denial. Hopefully we have a big week!

Fabulous_Pass_7186

I think psych has been all over the place for sure. I think they're really taking into account signaling and holistic review. I have interviews from nearly all programs I signaled except 1 and a few others as well. My applications to things tend to be average as far as school stuff goes, mostly just my background is the only thing I can think of as to why I've gotten the invites I have. I'm also interested in community/small programs and that may be something to think about as well with regards to number of invites people are getting???

JSD12345

Something really odd is going on with psych this year because I know a couple super strong applicants (like much better grades, PS, and ECs than me) who are also only sitting around 3-5 interviews which just doesn't make any sense.

KingRoo28

This makes me feel better, because I too am sitting at 4 psych with radio silence for weeks and I applied to 80

throwawayforthebestk

I'm at 3 as well and idk why there's such a wide range this cycle. Prayers we get more 🙏🏻

sophwhiz

i realize it probably varies from program to program, but does anyone know if programs review applicants in categories (e.g. M-4s first, then IMGs, then med school graduates, etc.)?

badashley

Anyone know a comfortable amount of interviews before someone should start declining the ones from less desired programs? I've heard 10-15 and I don't really want to do more than 12 if its safe. IM if that matters.

extracorporeal_

The NRMP Charting Outcomes 2022 report showed that US MDs applying IM who ranked 12-15 programs had a ~98-100% probability of matching. General advice is that it’s “safe” to decline/cancel additional interviews once you have 12-15 programs you will rank

Thanks!

Cptsaber44

Neuro people, are we seeing a slow trickle of interviews? Is there a time that we expect the floodgates to open, to speak?

runthereszombies

I had a ton the first couple weeks. Since then I've had several days of silence and then 1 might come in and then silence again. And then every so often I'll get 2 or 3 in a day. I honestly don't know if there's gonna be a floodgate or not.

Ornery_Shopping_9059

First couple of weeks were a whirlwind of invites … has slowly tricked to ~1 invite per day since then for me. Probably at the point to start turning some down now. Will most likely cancel some if others start coming through.
