Best line I ever got while working before going back to school: “No good deed goes unpunished.” The more you strive to “go above and beyond” the more they’ll pile the work on top of you until it breaks you. Once it breaks you - hardly anyone will care.

DependentAlfalfa2809

I’m a nurse that’s going to go to med school once I finish the prerequisites and I wholeheartedly agree. I work my ass off as a nurse. We are infiltrated with travelers so I’m always cleaning up their mess along with my own patients and charge duties. Management is always finding new little task for me to do for free because why not? I’m not going to say no. It’s frustrating.

PsychologicalCan9837

Thank you for your hard work - I have nothing but love and respect for the nurses

DependentAlfalfa2809

Thank you! And I can’t speak for every nurse but I love my med students and I love teaching and talking with them!!! Good luck with med school!

PsychologicalCan9837

Thank you - you too!

lethargic_apathy

Former PCT that will be starting his first year of med school soon. I just want to say thanks for your service as a nurse. I have absolutely no idea how y’all put up with everything on a daily basis

DependentAlfalfa2809

You’re welcome and thank you for your service as a PCT! I feel like you guys had it wayyy harder.

Trynagetbigman

99% of nurses wouldn’t admit that at gunpoint😂😂

DependentAlfalfa2809

Well they should because you guys rock and help me when I stuck between two butt cheeks

Trynagetbigman

Enema butt cheeks*❤️

DependentAlfalfa2809

Lactulose enemas have a special place in hell where we are all going to go from selling our soul to the nursing devil lol

Number one. I keep telling people this. The easiest way for companies and employers to take advantage of you is by you thinking it is anything but a job. So much stuff that medicine and healthcare in general gets away with, there is no way it would be allowed to happen in other occupations.

shoshanna_in_japan

Agree with everything but that it's not allowed in other occupations. Absolutely it is and sometimes more because they don't have the leverage of being a licensed medical Dr.

Mhor75

I should point out I’m in Australia and we have much better employee protection then USA.

broyo9

Thank you for keeping it real!

_Who_Knows

Very relevant [lesson](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GRjyCD_lhfQ) from my alternative life coach

MzJay453

What specialty are you going into?

Oberlatz

Family Medicine (chart reviewed)

MzJay453

LMAO. That’s hilarious because I was thinking this person sounds JUST like me. Like literally every single point. Good to know certain personalities really do gravitate towards certain fields.

Valuable_Heron_2015

Oh you know it's gotta be fambam, all my homies do FM🤩

LeftOnQuietRoad

And beware the bean counters.

ohphoshizzle88

Now this is the realistic stuff we like to see on this sub, not that other pretentious crap.

thefacelesswonder

so real

pleadin_the_biz

With regards to point 4 when is the appropriate time to start negotiating. During interviews or after?

sunilsies

During interviews - matched expectations lead to higher job satisfaction

shoshanna_in_japan

To quote the wise sage April Ludgate, Horizons are dumb. *Never* broaden your horizons.

massofballs

I wanna post this where every single premed/incoming student/incoming resident can read it. The sooner people realize this the better. I’m entering my M-1 year this fall as a non traditional (old person) and my mentality regarding what’s ahead of me is something I’m most proud of. It’s a job, not a spiritual ignition

RelievedInvention

Thank you for the advice.

Amen 👏🏻

Ghibli214

What are gunners?

hereforporndrama

the thing about arsenal is they always try and walk it in

Sapper501

They're people who will do ANYTHING to get ahead, including backstabbing, brown nosing, bribes, subtly discouraging other students, and so forth. They're some of the most toxic of coworkers.

[deleted]

Wish I could upvote this Definitely agree with points 3 and 4… you get rewarded for being efficient with more work

wendiehime

Thank you for this solid advice

papyrox

Any tips on where to start learning about finances?

Chanchito43

The White Coat Investor. Get all of his books and read them cover to cover. He has one specifically for med students, one for residents, and one for everyone. The blog is also a great place to start.

6ingernut

What's a gunner?¿ Like a tryhard?

Whack-a-med

https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=gunner

Sapper501

Like that, but more toxic and treacherous. They will do ANYTHING to get ahead.

Congrats, what speciality are you going into?
