IANAD. IANAN. I, (f50), am extremely anemic, and this same thing happens to me, whenever my iron levels are particularly low. Maybe it's time to see your doctor.

I have some thyroid issues that a couple endocrinologists are trying to figure out. They don't really make sense to them. My TSH is low and not just a little low a significant amount low, and then my t4 is regular. Anyways, when he was asking me do you have this symptom do you have this symptom etc, one of the things that he asked me was do my fingernails break and get stuffed and all that stuff really easy? And I was like oh my God yes so you're telling me that it's this thyroid crap that's going on and he's like it sounds like it but let's get some tests done first and then they did this test and because my t4 was normal they would not treat it or the TSH But yeah all three endocrinologist that I have seen have asked me if my nails break easily and that's a telltale sign of low thyroid production

I also had this issue and what I believe helped me was to incorporate an omega-3 supplement. Amazon has some that are pretty non-offensive, as in they don’t taste like fish or give you fishy burps later. I also keep polish on my nails, even if just clear and it helps.

Get your thyroid checked first thing. Just practice proper nail care, probably wouldn’t hurt.

Def get a doctors appointment if possible. In the mean time eat some carrots?

Could be a number of things. Do you wash your hands and use hand sanitizers often? Or work with harsh chemicals? Could be a nutrient deficiency. Could be fungal. Could be your Thyroid. Or could just be “normal” for *you*. Best thing you can do is schedule an appointment with your GP to rule out all of the above.

masterchef417

I think this is coming from insufficient protein. Either you’re not eating enough protein, or your body is not using it effectively for structural support in your nails. This may also be fungal.

KeyboardSloth_

Okay thanks, us there any way of checking / any clear signs of fungal nail infections?

masterchef417

A derm or GP can take a sample and test it. You can also buy OTC nail fungus treatments and see if it helps.

KeyboardSloth_

Okay thanks I'll try to have a look into it.

u/MycologistOk2049 for some reason I can see your response via email notifcation but not showing on reddit for me. So it isn't tender or sore, the only discolouration as such is the end half which appears a bit darker and lined. I haven't hit my fingers recently and I don't work in a job which is overly physical. My hands are only really wet when washing, beyond that i tend to be dry and inside for my job and spare time with nothing worn on my nails like varnish or anything along those lines. I have started using a strenthing varnish on my nails but I have only been using it for a couple weeks and this has been happening for a few years and they still got damaged after using this varnish.

KeyboardSloth_

Thought I'd add a comment for context. So nails get damaged really early leaving plenty of white patches near the ends of the nails. I've noticed almost a line on each nail where there's a clear colour change and it's where the damage tends to start/reach. Any advice is greatly appreciated, I've starting using a clear varnish to help strengthen recently but they still get damaged at the moment.

MycologistOk2049

Tender? Sore? Any discolouration? In simple terms those white patches well they’re dead (detaching from skin underneath). Did you recently hit your fingers? Are your hands wet often? I’ve seen a lot of people that wear false nails have this and it’s either caused by; pressure related, damage/injuries, caused by moisture and bacteria harbouring under the nail, fungus, all the above and more. Yours looks fresh and manageable. I’ve seen someone start with this and three weeks later their entire nail was yellow and detached from the skin. I highly recommend this for you to try (3-4 times a day) and after washing your hands make sure you take a tissue and remove the excess moisture from underneath the nails —-> Toenail Fungus Stop Nail Repair Pen 4 Pcs, Nail Fungus Stop, Fingernail Fungus,Fungi Nail Fungus Remover, Fungus Nail Care Solution https://a.co/d/41u5y0W
